Hé guys,

I' m thinking about buying a scope for the hobby.

What types and brands of scopes are you using and anyone used one with a integrated logic analyser?

I will start, I currently have this

I have the H 140 one that I use as a portable one to poke around cabs, mostly to determine a pcb vs monitor issue when there is no picture. It's a bit clunky to use versus a traditional one (I prefer my old bench top one and the portable one gets very little use unless I have to).

I've had logic analyzers available before but I've never felt the hassle of connecting it and setting it up to be worth it.

My bench top scope is a simple old 2 channel 20MHz Telequipment (Tektronix copy) I bought off Craigslist for not much. It's not even a digital storage scope (but I can use the portable one for that if I need storage) but works fine for debug. If it has an X/Y input mode (fairly common) it's useful for vector games (Z input as well is rarer). I don't do much past the mid 80's so if you're working on 1990+ a 50MHz or 100MHz bandwidth may be a better fit.

Paul.

Thanks for the info so far. @André, how do you like your scope after a while any pros or cons you found after using it for a while?

I think the digital scope is very versatile, what I think I like about the analog one is the buttons and dials... Every function is directly available. How is that with the digital scope.

Anyone out there that wants to tell something about their scope?

It's not so much the buttons, it's the "feel" of an analogue scope vs. a digital one.

What I REALLY like about digital: the "Auto set" button. Just press one button and (if your signal is relatively constant) it will set-up everything so you will see the signal. No manual "searching" like you have to do on an analogue scope.

Also, directly seeing voltage values that the scope calculates for you is awesome, it saves you from having to do that brain work yourself all the time ;)

Of course, with a (cheap) digital scope you will always have the feeling that it is "sampling". It's just not as "direct" as an analogue one.

There really isn't that much difference with dials and buttons between analogue and digital, the digital one still has the same dials, only some more buttons.

The advantages for the digital one really outweigh for me. It's small and light, love that. To be honest I haven't used it that much yet though....:S
