So.....whatever happened to Taiwan ??

I mean.....now I have my Atari XEGS and Philips monitor set-up I noticed something......I saw the back of the monitor had a label saying "Made in Taiwan".

Then I checked the XEGS main unit, "Made in Taiwan"........the keyboard......"Made in Taiwan".....and then I thought.....what the heck ever happened to Taiwan,
I NEVER see anything "Made in Taiwan" anymore !

Seriously, when was the last thing you bought something new that was made there ?

Of course "everything" comes from mainland China today...so ...... are all the factories desolate places there now ?  Did they switch to more sophisticated stuff ?

Of course, this tendency is going on for years already. First it was Japan, then Taiwan,Thailand and now China. But it does make you wonder....how are they keeping up their economy there.....

It's the same thing with Hong Kong. I remember growing up in the early eighties, every toy was labeled "Made in Taiwan" or "Made in Hong Kong". Now everything has moved to mainland China, like you said. Workers in Taiwain became too expensive, I guess. Maybe the factories were converted to storage and office buildings?

Taiwan has a living standard comparable to the Netherlands. How often do you hold a product "Made in the Netherlands" that is not a Cucumber.

No, Pickles. They have to fit in the ladies.

But I see your question. I still buy lovely Camera's made in Japan, and a lot of High Tech stuff now coming from South Korea, but made in Taiwan seems vanished. Maybe we don't see it as they are officially "Republic of China" or ROC. Maybe they label stuff Made in China now too.

Very much, except for the agricultural part:

Agriculture contributes 3% to GDP, down from 35% in 1952, and the service sector makes up 73% of the economy. Traditional labor-intensive industries are steadily being moved off-shore and replaced with more capital- and technology-intensive industries.

It does make you wonder where this shift in actual production of stuff will end....Africa ?

I did also read that a good number of companies actually re-started manufacturing here again because the price difference wasn't interesting enough anymore, plus the added trouble of communication, distance, quality etc.
