Xevious problem...
« on: July 22, 2013, 04:42:26 PM »
So i picked up this Xevious last Saturday. It's in pretty decent shape and fully complete. The only problem is that the game won't startup..
The monitor and the Marque both work, but there's nothing on the screen and and no sound can be heard.

So i think there is a problem with the pcb or the power supply? you guys told me to always check the voltage on the pcb first..
But............ i'm not actually sure which pcb (Atari or Namco) it is, i checked the pinouts on klov but they are probably for the atari version...

I guess i got the namco one because the 3 pin connector is the same as Galaga? And does this also mean that the middle pin is the ground, the orange 12v and the red 5v?

Would be cool to get this baby running before Eurocade!  :D

i would start at the AR2 board, thats that smaller pcb in the bottom with the huge heatsink

Measure first before the board (comming from the transformer) and then after.

If you don't got juice at the transformer side, you may want to check the fuses at the PSU

if still no power from the transformer, you may have a bad transformer

If you got juice from the transformer, measure the output of the AR2 board.

If not, you may need to rebuild the AR2

If you have juice there, work your way up to the boardset

This plug looks like a power plug, and my guess is that the middle (black) is ground, so measure those two colored wires with the red lead on the DVM and use the black on the middle wire

Oh and while hunting for more info, i found maybe something usefull:

below is a list of which games used what revision boards, its not complete, but
what i've been able to ascertain :

A034485-01 - Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Lunar Lander, Football (4 Player)
A035435-01 - Atari board versions of Xevious, Pole Position I + II, DigDug
A035435-02 - Battlezone, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Liberator, Quantum, Red Baron, Star Wars, Tempest, Warlords, Return Of The Jedi, Arabian, Black Widow, Major Havoc
A035435-03 - Missile Command, Monte Carlo
A035435-04 - Gravitar, Millipede, Space Duel
A035435-05 - Namco Board versions of  Pole Position I + II, Xevious, DigDug
A035435-06 - Kangaroo

I interpret that as if your AR2 is A035435-01, then you have a Atari board version of Xevious.
If you have A035435-05, you have a Namco board version of Xevious.

thanks guys, as always really helpful.  :D

Yes namco version
What do you Measure now on the connector (midle = ground)
14.5 orange
0.05 Red

So the 5v. is dead?

Don't know, there's no label on it, but the previous owner said the cab was working for a few years, he's even less technical skilled then me, so he didn't do anything with it (so he says).

Yes fix the 5 volt and you have a working game  :D
You can test the pcb in your galaga cab  ;)

Okay, so the problem is the power supply? I read something about the big blue... could that be it?

The galaga is already in storage at Beeld en Geluid for Eurocade@the Retro Game Experience, but i'll see what i can do..

start with the instructions as above, see if you got 5V at the AR2, i bet it needs a rebuild.

No i don't think it is the big blue
Check / clean first the connectors and fuse holders
Measure also the fusses if the good
Look at the solderpoint if the ok on the power pcb
I think it is a lidle problem

Yes, check that first, then check the 5volt test pin on the AR2 (pin 5&6 on connector J7, see pic)

I think if you dont have 5V at the AR2, then maybe the 3055 is blown (Q3) or the 10.3 volts unregulated has a problem, test that also (there should be a test point for that. if you have 10,3 there, your transformer is good

read this totally  ;) http://www.andysarcade.net/personal/tech/AR2sense.txt
