### 50th Road Trip Celebration : DISCS OF TRON ###
« on: May 15, 2013, 01:03:30 PM »
Damn it! My Galaxian³ / Nuno's Lair V³ stories took me all my free time available for the Hobby these last 18 months that I didn't have time to publish my road trips  :-\ And, I missed the ...let's say... the "celebration" of my 50th Road Trip done for an arcade cabinet (I don't count cabinets delivery, road trip for console pod or life size decoration or anything else... arcade game exclusively!)  8)

Go back almost ONE year later (I told you... I got now a severe 'publishing' delay'), the 3rd of July 2012...

Let's start with this picture

Yeps, this time, it's gonna be a cabinets trade.
It was a nightmare to remove that Turbo Out Run cockpit from the back of the V1, until the door! So, yeah, this one will be part of a trade!
Let's load -for the first time- a cabinet in this trailer I got recently for cheap.

Wow, why I didn't got a trailer so far? Mandatory to any 'professional road tripper' equipment! ;D

Usual pre-road trip preparation / check up...

The seller is not living to far... only 1h40 from here...

... so I can start the road trip this evening and expect to be back not too late.

25°C outside! I'm loving this! So rare to have hot weather in Belgium...

On the road...

My favorite food ... Belgium fries! You can buy them here ('chez Michel' famous location, one of my favorite one btw)...

...and there, along all the Belgium roads in fact  :) ...

Welcome in France!

...land of famous castles!

Here's WOINIC, the biggest wild boar in the world!

The seller's town : Rethel!
Funny, I use to drive over here often, when I go to Paris...

...and I didn't know a DISCS OF TRON was waiting for me here!  :P

A last good bye to my Turbo Out Run cockpit  :-\ ... but hey, Discs of Tron guys!   :-*

Let's load that beautiful but HEAVY beast!

Bye bye Rethel!

Now that I have a Discs of Tron, the vision of the world changes...lights...

...and blue...

...everywhere!  8)

@ Home!

Two countries : Belgium > France > Belgium, 5H41min on the road and 311km driven!

Tron & Discs Of Tron, the perfect combo?! No, wait... they released the Tron Pinball, without counting the EDOT  ::)...
Anyway, I'm already reaaaaaaaaally happy!

 :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

More details about this cabinets soon...  8)

really really nice, bruno, such an amazing cabinet AND game. and of course congratulations on 50 arcade roadtrips, i should count mine as well, although i'm sure i haven't reached your number yet. since you're so far behind with publishing your trips, perhaps you've already reached 100 by now. :P

btw, what's the story behind the catch? how did you find the machine?
all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

Congrats Bruno : a very nice cab (and heavy too).
I already have seen the same cab, and that's truly a masterpiece.

how did you find the machine?
I've spot a TomTom GPS  :spaceace:.

DOT is a lot better than Tron in gameplay IMHO. However, if you have enough space and means like Bruno I would want to have both of them for sure....

The 3D marquee is something you can only enjoy in real life :)

Congrats, on to the next 50 ;)

Well, no particular story behind that cabinet unfortunately.
The owner had it since 6 years and never had the time to work on it. He knew I was crazy about owing this one, and finally accepted to trade it.

Here's additional pictures after unloading it :

Yeah, the sides look new...because ...they are new! The seller replaced both side...gorgeous isn't it?  :P

hmmm, not sure, the colors of the sideart look really nice, BUT the edges seem to be ragged - at least on the photos - as if they are have been cut crudely because the seller didn't want to remove the t-molding. sorry bruno, don't wanna spoil the fun, but that's basically the first thing i noticed  :-[

Well, you can notice it in a small area, the job hasn't been done 100% perfectly, but it's not enough to spoil the fun for me 8)
The seller didn't replace the T-molding, because at the time he didn't find the right blue color (does it is available now btw?). I may replace it and so correct these minor defaults, but first I'll examine it closer and see if some used/damaged parts justify to replace it entirely...

More details on this.
Let's start its examination :

This DOT has been hacked by previous owner(s)...

XBOX powered?  :-\

hacked/broken electronic parts here  :-X

Monitor replaced by a TV. And harness/controls hacked too...

With that amount of missing/broken/hacked parts here, It would be too long/expensive to rebuild this lady with all the original part. So I'll go for a dedicated/tuned mame setup to enjoy the game, arcade accurate of course!  :-*

Fortunately, all the Tron specific physical parts are there and in good shape.

Wow, I've never seen a so much 'complex' cabinet regarding how it has been made. See for example how much bezels/overlay or whatever this beauty carries! From the  back

Next, a special one  for black light!

Next, an other overlay :

And I finally reach the mirror :

Behind the mirror, we can see the front bezel :

The 'engine' is now powered by :

Ultimarc ArcadeVGA to display DOT in its native resolution/freq, full RGB via scart connector in a new TV (the one inside wasn't working anymore)
Hacked mouse to fit the original DOT spinner
Ipac2 for all the buttons
Automatic boot to game

The image quality is amazing but wait! Why everything on screen seems to have an offset echo?

Ok, my mistake. I've put the mirror in the wrong side... funny to see how it can affect the image like this!

Let's fix the T-molding, damaged in various locations :

This will also help me to correct the wrong side arts cutting

Ready?

After removing the t-molding, I correct the cutting of the side arts...

It looks better!

The control panel overly is not too bad, but the joystick is damaged (someone used a lighter under the trigger :-\). Fortunately, I have since a looooong time a new joystick reproduction I've never used :

I spent a lot of time to clean the control panel, and although it is damaged in several places, it looks good to me now!

Guys, this game is absolutely fantastic to watch & play! Stay tuned for more pictures and video! :-*

Nice looking machine Bruno! Please don't change the original CPO with a repro: it's in good conditions and would be a mess to trash it!  ;)
