Gridrunner for iPad/iPhone
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:33:27 PM »
Jeff Minter has been busy.

Gridrunner is out for iOS devices, it's like centipede meets juno first with a bit of moon cresta thrown in (featuring sounds you'll recognize).
Also has a retro mode and a bunch of surprises (even goes as far as using Engrish)

Oooooooooohhhh, I see a Caverns of Mars clone !!!!!

Definitly one of my favorite games on the Atari 8 bit ! The tension of getting out in time was intense :)

Caverns of Mars was a game that came out of APX, The Atari Program Exchange, which offered a platform for "home programmers".
I am sure this was the largest success from that source...

I think this was a pretty cool idea.....in a way it was the front runner of the current iOS app sales model !

Whooaa, Caverns of Mars was one of the first games I ever played.  I had the cart on my 800XL.  The rumble of the titlescreen picture when you beat the level used to freak me out     It's similar to Scramble but scrolling downward - actually Caverns of Mars II was essentially a Scramble clone :(

Yep but the funny thing was that once you reached the goal deep down in the Cavern, you had to activate the bomb there and than reverse back out of the cave without hitting the walls once because you wouldn't make it out on time...

The graphics were pretty simple on this game but it is great still:

On later levels you have to shoot your way through walls and if you don't make a nice wide "way" for yourself you get in trouble when getting back up...also the levels get really challenging later....

Watched a video of Caverns of Minos and although it has the usual Jeff Minter funny nonsense it looks a bit disappointing to me because you CAN hit the walls on this one (actually it looks like you have to to rescue the Minosses). Maybe a copyright issue ?

Béla, look at this video, you can also play as the Taxi from Space Taxi ! :) (see 0.30)
