The ultimate music of the 80s
« on: October 01, 2011, 05:53:35 PM »
Imagine for a moment you're in your gameroom, and it needs the absolute 80's musical background!

If you can chose one song (JUST ONE!) that the most symbolizes the cliché of the 80s music for you, what would it be?
Very difficult question that you would probably answer differently every day. You don't even have to be a fan, or like it, but I would like to know what symbolises this period for you musically. So a heavy metal fan is allowed to say Mireille Mathieu just as a techno fan could say Bon Jovi.  :?

I think for me the absolute cliché that throws me back to the 80's is....is....is.....:
Europe - The Final Countdown

We might manage to compile a sort of "Best-Of". Your turn!

Only one song is absolutely impossible. the 80s was the best decade ever in music. acts like depeche mode, the cure, sisters of mercy, pet shop boys, anne clark, duran duran, communards, michael jackson, madonna, kim wilde, a-ha, camouflage, sandra and more and more... all was great!

but i think one of the best 80s disco:

Visage - Fade to grey

Visage - Fade to grey

A very special one for me : it was the very first 45T my parents bought me! I guess it still in the attic in my parents house... I have to find it back  :P

Ok, only one to pick is almost impossible... so many hits in the 80s, but if I have to get only one that represent the 80's for me now, I would pick up this one

Listen it here... jump!

I don't even have to think a second:

And this was the first live gig I saw from them (on tv) in 1982....performed in De Doelen in my city Rotterdam...

It's not my all times favourite but this particular song immediately brings me back into that very moment in the eighties: One of our teachers was sick and I had 2 hours to kill, a friend offered me to stay at his place while he went to attend his class (we were in different section). Coming from a village we had little access to "hype" music and this happened during my first months in the big town school. So I stayed at his place (well: his mother's place) by myself, played Karateka and Ninja on his C64 (yes I was really into Ninjas, don't laugh) and that song was played twice on his "cool town radio station". I felt like a grown up, being there doing my favourite things while others poor fools where at school. I was the king of the world (even though I didn't finish karateka just then).
(hey check the name of that band, now if it isn't predestination!)

I feel something similar with West End Girls from the Pet Shop Boys: my first Tuna Sandwich in a snack (I was more used to bring my own sandwiches from home).
It made me feel like a NY trader with very little time on his hands to prepare his own meal.
Little did I know that it would become my main lunch/snack for many years to come!

Gosh why did you make me write all these confessions? ;)
