My Euro DL cab
« on: June 21, 2007, 10:13:51 AM »
Hello friends!

DarthNuno asked me for pictures of my Euro DL cabinet, so here it is.  :D
I bought it two years ago, but I haven't really done anything to it yet except collecting the necessary parts. It's a bit trashed, but after seeing DarthNuno's Space Ace restoration I'm feeling a bit more confident that it will turn out ok.  :)

I had the choice between this and a Space Ace cab. The Space Ace was in better shape cosmetically, but it was lacking the Atari logo and the English instructions. I was later told that the English instructions are somewhat rare, so I am happy that I chose the DL.

The control panel is destroyed. I am wondering if I'll just make the new control panel fit the US overlay, so I don't need to worry about the die-cut holes.

Some views of the beat up cabinet..

Rear right corner

Inside. It has been converted to JAMMA, but luckily I have the documentation. And they have left the old power supply and sound board.

I have bought a couple of laserdisc players.

An Euro pcb.

Another Euro pcb and (hopefully compatible) sound board.

The second Euro pcb has a part which is broken off. I guess it's not a difficult fix. This one:

Some more sound boards.

I have one laserdisc, and hope to find a spare. I have also tracked down an original player, but I'm still persuading the seller.

That's all for now!  :D

I have some questions..

I see that some of you use small metal legs under the cabinet, and it has also been used on mine. However, they have drilled through my LD player drawer, so it cannot be pulled out. How do you do it? Do you cut the leg levelers to make them fit under the drawer?
I want to preserve the cabinet so it doesn't get destroyed, but I want the original functionality.

The pcb feels sturdy enough, but the thought of using a laserdisc player and a disc feels somewhat daunting and prone to failure. Do you know any solution to use mpeg files instead? I don't think the Laser Ace interface card can use mpeg files? Can I connect the pcb to a pc running Daphne (or something like that) which will pull the mpegs from flash memory and display the frames requested by the pcb?

My cabinet is severly battered in some places. How do you feel about replacing the sides with new wood?

HI madsjm,

Thanks a lot for the pictures.

Regarding the cosmetic, it reminds me the work to do for my Space Ace.

 woodfiller for the water damages, control panel overlay repro, ...

Regarding the legs, I will check on my cabs... because both (SA and DL) use real laser disc player... and I don't remember having problem with LD drawer.

If you cannot use your pcb, I suggest you to go with Daphne, and if possible, with the LD player connected to the pc -> more authentic experience  :P  I can help you for the setup up if you need some help   If you need some pictures to help you, just ask

Good work  :o

HI madsjm,
nice cab, not so bad after all. You have all the parts to restore it to original conditions, so please don't Daphnetize it ! :)
The only hard to find part is a not rotted Philips LD, but you can always use my EuroDL interface and a Software Corner DL LD after all.
Please note that the Atari Audio Regulator II boards are not used as sound boards in Euro DL but just as power supply boards. The whole sound circuitry is on the Euro DL board itself.
Good luck with the restoration and please post pics when done !

italiandoh: That's great news!  :D The only thing which could have been better was if we could have an interface board which enabled us to drop the laserdisc alltogether, and just pull an avi/mpeg from a memory card.  ;D

FINNY: Sure, no problem. I can scan it and vectorize it for you when I'm removing the cpo. I'm embarassed to say that I haven't gotten around to actually restoring the cabinet yet. I can't say that I've been very busy, I'm just slow. An Italian guy is asking me a lot about scans of the atari logo and instructions, and I will deliver all that when I begin restoring the cab. Right now I'm fixing and restoring my Addams Family pinball.

Um.. Is this a reasonable price for a NOS Software Corner laser disc?

http://cgi.ebay.de/Raritaet-LDG-Laser-Disc-Game-Dragons-Lair-Spiel_W0QQitemZ320166185899

190 EUR seems pretty steep, even though it's new. Should I wait for a cheaper one?  :)

Yes, you should. Last week there was one up for sale at about 40 euros. I've seen some go for 10 euros too.
