TRON !!! : Road trip + Restoration WIP
« on: April 08, 2005, 09:15:19 AM »
7th april 2005 :

It's start like my previous road trip ( Quest for Gauntlet Legends    ), with my personal 'loader man' called Charlyx and his famous 'Citroen Berligot' car :

Thanks to him for beeing so nice and quick on this story

So we start to drive for a HUGE road trip ( about 10 km  to go ...   )

At location, Steph -the salesman & most important a friend on mine- helps Charlyx to load the new toy inside the car :

Am I dreaming ? No it's now loaded in the car...

Oppss, I'm not sure that Steph will let me go with the Tron... He still has his  hand on it and seems to think : "What the F@#% I'm doing    ..."

  Am i dreaming ? No, the TRON is really ready to go with me ...

Steph now give me the symbolic coin of 20 belgium franc, who allows me to play the game ( the coin door is set for old belgium coin... not used anymore ... now we use €uro 8)  )

So we're starting to leave, and Steph watch me go away with his baby...
Please Steph, promise to me that we'll be still friend

Well, it's time to bring it back home... and we've 10 minutes to drive

I'm so happy, of course  :P

There it is : my home, and the TRON is really here :

Oh my god, the only free location for the cab is ... on the first floor  :?
Look at us, before to fight the staircases  8)

Fortunately, I'm not under the cab... and Charlyx has strong enough...

Ok, that cab is not so heavy, so it's ok but...

... I'm not smiling anymore

A last effort...

... et voilà !!!   :P

The TRON is now in location !!! My got we've done it

The job is done, thanks to Charlyx  for help me to bring back and carry my new toy  :P  You really deserve a good Belgium beer ( I'm still with my Coke Light... )
Thanks also to my friend -the seller- Steph  ! You rule !!!

opssss, we're not  with the right cabinet
 :P

...to be continue...

Man that looks good.  You don't have a long way to go with that Tron.  I posted a link to your site on my Tron blog as well.  Good luck!

8th of april 2005 :

Start to clean up the monitor, bezel & control panel  :?

Here's the cab... dirty

A view of the 'precious' CPU laser beam background artwork, in a very nice condition  :P
:P

Ok, I'm starting the clean up process with the monitor ...
:

... and next the control panel :
:

On the top left, the overlay has some dirty spots that I can't remove actually... I'm using some classic multi-usage cleaner, and I need something stronger  :?  Any idea to remove  them ?
You can also see some cracks in the CPO all along the edge...

:

Same diry spots on the top right. The most damaged part of this cab is the Cab' interior right, there are missing paint artwork... and you can see directly the wood... :?

OK, here's the complete view of the control panel, after cleaning :

Now, it look better, isn't it  :P

... to be continue...

... still in the clean up process.

Today, I'll clean up one of the most important Tron's item : the MCP cone background artwork

here's the MCP sheet before operation :

the back side:

I'm just using some paper napkins with a little water, very carefully ... and voilà  :

...looks good now

...end of line for today

Well, it's time to plug the game ...at least

The first Tron boot shows me the horizontal & vertical line, like a test mode...

Ok, I power off / on the game and it start correctly

Here's few pictures when playing the game :

Some graphics are missing, and there is some sound problem... While some music plays, there is some sounds missing  The music -well know- sounds strange ...

Worst, after something like one minute, the picture starts to shrink, roll, ...  Check the video problem to see what's happen

       https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum/tron-monitor.avi

Any idea about this problem ?

... end of line for now...

Well, the monitor seems to have a vertical amplificator problem... or maybe another things ... huh well, any I decide to clean what I can do

So I 'll remove the monitor to clean it up...

Here's the parts removed to access to the monitor :

... and there it is :

That's now the most thrilling part... I don't use to handle monitors, especially naked like that... But I have too

...It is now safe on the desk, ouf

Never handle a monitor when you're alone... it can be very dangerous  ... opssss, you certainly already know it !!!

Date is december 82 ... my god, I was nine year olds   :?

Ok, now that the monitor is out of the cab, it'll be easy to clean it up a little with air spray and other electronic cleaners...

A view from inside the cab...

...Unfortunately the monitor, after the cleaning process has still a display problem    :x    :x  :?

For my monitor problem, I got a great idea

  Bring it to my brother, who is a TV reparator  :P  Yeah, it helps isn't it

Ok, So I load the monitor into my car :

My next car will be a truck or a pick up.... well something like that

This Tron cabinet was made for europe [ 220V ], but the monitor is made for US [ 110V ], so my bros need to have the original tron transfo to test & repair the monitor  :?

... another car trip to bring him the Tron transfo :

... Now I waiting for the fix      ...

End of line for today  8)

OK, at this point I'm still not able to make work the orginal PCB;, so I'll send it to repair in an arcade shop  :?

But while this time; I don't want to have a non playable cabinet, so I'll use mame to emulate the Tron PCB, and only that game  8)

I want to keep the orginal hardware, so the major problem is the spinner.

 I'll use the optical board of my SlikStik Tornado spinner

... removing all the parts...

...cross the fingers... Let's see if the SlikStick hardware works with the old Miday's wheel...

YYYeeehhhaaawww  :P  :P  :P It's working, so let's fix the optical board to the Midway hardware...

So, do you prefere to see an non working cab, waiting years to be fully restored, or see & play THIS   8)  8)  8)  8)  :

And now, check out this VIDEO ...

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I have two questions:

1) Did you fix the Hantarex? Since I have two myself, I'm interested to know what was wrong with it.

2) Why did you replace the ROMs when you had a RAM error?
