Is it 4 board or 2 board?

just to make sure not that i'm buying something i don't need: both the 4-board and the 2-board versions can be used in an upright, right? what's the difference between those two besides the number of pcbs?

Nothing.

There are variations though. Some boards have an audio amp on board, some don't. I'm not sure if that differs between 4 and 2 way board-sets but I have seen 2-board versions with and without amp.

I thought the difference is that the 4 board pcb is older than the 2 board pcb

I had a Donkey King PCB once, it is indeed more a Crazy Kong bootleg, with strange colors.
