Mario Bros widebody - Sanyo EZ20 problem
« on: March 10, 2014, 10:07:06 AM »
Hi guys!

Last weekend I finally started working on my Mario Bros widebody from Thomas' first container :)
The problem, the Sanyo EZ20 monitor doesn't come on. When I power the cab on, marquee light works, coin door lights work, I hear the psu humming like it should.
But the monitor doesn't power on, not even the slightest hum or buzz. No glow from the neck, no sparks or arcing around the flyback.

No sound from the Mario Bros board too. But since the monitor isn't doing anything, the sound board on the monitor probably does not get power to work.

I tried the another Sanyo monitor from my DK cabinet, game does work! Though I can't hear any sound, could be a fault on the Mario Bros board or the audio board on the DK monitor.
But at least, the psu, cabinet wiring and game board seems to be pretty OK.
so the problem must be in the Mario monitor.

As you can see on the photo, the flyback had some goo leaked. Could that be the problem? Both fuses on the chassis checked out fine btw.
I know they sell replacement flybacks for the Sanyo EZ20, but before ordering from the US I would like to hear your expert opinion :)

Thank you for reading!

-Barry

EDIT: I just noticed I already unplugged the video cable going to the "invert/ non-invert board" prior to taking the photo's.
I did test it when the input was hooked up correctly guys :)

It does look that its melted, although i have seen flybacks that look like this and still work, but its definitely a suspect  :P

Maybe this helps your quest :

start from about 45 minutes into the video (or watch it completely including the first 2 parts for lots of interesting info)

and don't forget Dokert's great flowchart:

Thanks for your help Etienne!
Will check the video tonight after work.

About bad flybacks, the one in my Sega Blast City (Candy cabinet ) leaked the black goo onto the chassis and everything still works fine.
Common thing on Blast city monitors btw, lots of people have the black goo issue.

Just finished the last 45 minutes of the video, thanks for the heads up Etienne!
Lot's of interesting things in this vid. Probably going to watch the complete video and the others in the series too :)

And have a slight idea of where to start troubleshooting now.

Thats a nice set of video's, especially if you dont have a clue how monitors work, but you do have some skills to pickup things and are a quick learner.

this guy really explanes it in a very simple and logical understandable way.

for the lazy people, they are on my NAS, or just go here :
