Mini-Track (4 foot tall Track & Field)
« on: December 30, 2009, 07:14:47 AM »
Well, I guess I should catch everyone up on the project.  I am now starting a new thread, since I do not want to disrespect Scr33n's awesome scratch build thread.

Two weeks ago, I realized that this mega-present wasn't going to make it for Christmas. It's going to be a New Year's President's Day present now.  To remind everyone, this project is for a Track & Field replica cab.  However, I am reducing the size to 4 feet tall (70% of full size).

I did my research and cobbled together the measurements. (Thanks everyone.)  I whipped up the side of the cabinet and printed out the pattern.

After I cut it out.

And the difference between realizing the difference between full sheet print and cutting edges off print.

Here I have the right side of the cab measured for cross pieces. (You can notice the left side in the back.)

Here is the shot for figuring out where the monitor and control panel will be going.

Starting to block out the edges here.

I'm not sure if I can share the plans for this cab since we have had to do a *lot* of improvising.  This is due to the fact that I am putting a 19 inch monitor into the machine.  Considering that the inside of the cab is only 16 and 7/8's wide, the monitor looks (and is) huge, proportionally speaking.

My father-in-law, who is helping with this project, came up with the idea to fabricate the control panel in plastic. It was a great idea.  Here are the pics:

It's going to look great with custom artwork.

Well, I hope to have more pics soon since I keep forgetting to take my camera out to the workshop the last couple times.  I'll try harder to remember and keep everyone updated.

New update for today.  We were installing the brackets last time, but I forgot the camera.  Here's

a couple shots to catch up.

Here we're loosely assembling the cabinet to make sure everything is square.

Brackets for the monitor.

Here it is a little bit more solid.

Checking the fit of the monitor. (This is the reason for a lot of improvising.  Proportionally, the

monitor is laughably huge.)

Disassembling the cabinet, prepping for primer.

That's it for today.  We hope to prepare a lot more of the pieces next time.

Me three.  Worst part is that I had one, but had to sell it before we moved across international borders again.  Since this one is for my daughter (pink and 4 feet tall), I'll have a full size for myself again someday.

Not much to report today. Mainly cleaning up the shop to get rid of the sawdust.  Don't want all that stuff flying around when painting.

Wiring the speakers.

Cutting the holes and testing size.

Laying out everything for priming.

Added a lip for laying the monitor glass on the speaker mount.

Of course after setting all of this up, we remembered that we need to cut out the air vents, cabinet lock, and the grooves on the back door.  We ran out of time for today, so we'll have to do the cutting next time, vacuum up the sawdust again, and then do the first layer of priming on everything.  When we do this I'll have to use wood filler to fix some of the areas where the saw got a little too aggressive.  We also realized that we'll have to rewire the speakers again to get the wire behind  the mounting plate, but that's a minor issue.

Using wood filler on the inside of the bottom rear board.  The saw wanted a little more to eat that day.

All primed and ready to go.

And the pink overload begins.

Oh, here's a mock up I made before I started the project:

My daughter wanted pink. What else am I to do?

The question I have is: What color/theme should I go with for the sideart, marquee, and control panel?  I was thinking either a garden (dark green grass, flowers etc.) theme or a candy (more pinks, reds, yellows, etc.) theme?  If anyone has any suggestions or better ideas I'm open to them.

Also, I'm starving for real estate on the control panel.  I can "comfortably" place six buttons per player.  However, my daughter is four. Should I just drill 3-4 per player or go all out with six?

A circus theme might work.  The problem is that I don't want her to "outgrow" the artwork when she gets older.

Painted the back panels, door, and top black today. Should be able to put on the T-molding and assemble tomorrow.

T-molding goes on today.  Waiting until the weekend for the paint to harden some more.  It's too soft to assemble anything.  I already have enough touching up to do without making more problems.

Assembling the mess.

Putting in the speakers.

Tapping in the markers for the control panel layout. (Image is mirrored due to cutting from the bottom side.)
