Hey everyone..

I made a video about our local mall that I grew up in... and played Dragon's Lair for the first time there.  If you're a kid from the '80s... and I assume most of us here are, this will take you back, as "The Mall' was the place to be when we were kids... and everything was "NEW"  !   ;D

I would've posted this sooner, but YT is blocking some countries because of music I used in the video.   Didn't want people to see the "sorry about that" screen.  Hopefully you won't be blocked in your country!

Here it is, The story of the rise and fall of the place that was the backdrop of so many great memories!

Enjoy!  :-)

I enjoyed watching that video.

It's strange. Not sure about the US, but I figure that when malls like this opened in the 80's, small, center town located shops got closed because of this...so now this cycle starts again.

I do have to say that judging on your 91 and recent video stuff, they never renovated the place since it was built. That is a MAJOR fault to make. You have to keep updating and innovating to keep places like that attractive.
No offense but it's a bit of a US thing. Build something and then think it'll last forever. I remember landing at JFK in 1998, first US visit in my life, and when we entered the terminal building we thought we were warped back to the 50's, expecting to bump into Gene Kelly who just left the Lockheed Constellation at gate 2....(it's much improved now though, the Dutch Schiphol design signing is a major improvement too ;)).

The mall in Nashua where I bought my iPad last summer had exactly the same floor, which gave it a real retro look, but it made it pretty old-fashioned. They were replacing it now though...

Most malls we visited (quite a few...my wife loves shopping...) looked to be in better shape still, but I'm sure economy and internet shopping is hitting hard there as well.

Over here we have similar problems with shops closing because of internet sales. Because we have a small and densely populated country, shops were always "around the corner" and doing great. Not many people bought through mail-order. Internet shopping changed that seriously...

And we all participate.

I don't really "feel" anything about malls, because over here thew were never like in the US. Cinema's were in city centers in the 80's here. Now, they are in separate huge buildings, like the mega-cinema's you have.
And let's not start about arcades. There were never arcades in malls over here. The square-meter rent was simply way too high to let an arcade survive I guess.

The mall has always been known to be a temporary anomaly. Here in the Netherlands some stupid planners still believe in it, but even in the heighdays the fate was already known. Mixture and flexibility of functions is the only planning scheme that survives. Go Paris, and see the ultimate. Sorry for your mall and memories, but hey! Go Mainstreet and 1st. Way cooler!

Yall have some very good points!  As much as I hate to admit it, Time is going by, The world is changing.....and I'm getting older... already saying things that sound like " you young whipper snappers don't respect anything"  lol

When our mall opened here, in Baytown, Texas.... It was the best thing to ever happen for our city.  I was a kid at the time, and everything was NEW!  Arcades, and videogames were completely magical, and before the mall opened, I only saw a game here and there at stores etc.  but when the mall opened.. it was like a place of the future!!!!.......

Wow, a place In.... Side...   not in the weather!  neat places we never heard of that stretched as far as the eyes could see.   Places to eat,  go see a movie.... Six to choose from!!  (we only had 2 screens in town before)  not to mention a very large arcade...  I remember when it opened, it had more that 40+ games inside.  The most amazing game I saw first was Asteroids...Cocktail.  It was like the Asteroids were floating under the glass!  Amazing!!!  I never had money for lunch at school because I hoarded it and spent it when we went to the mall!

The Sad Truth...   Yes the mall was never remodeled, even up to the '90s... but it was sooo well kept. There was no problem.. and I never saw what has happened today coming. If everything was fine, we would have an Apple Store today!   but unfortunately due to the economy turning to crap, and a large influx of crappy people, the crime rate has soared... My childhood city has rapidly decayed.  :'(

Things will never be the same.   :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(

Go Paris, and see the ultimate.

??? i suppose it's not Paris from France..  here it's total shame.  none arcade in a mall...    only few survivors decided to follow arcade ;  LTDN  & Arcade street.
