Arcade Lifestyle / Issues with PiMame
« on: November 26, 2013, 01:51:20 PM »
I was trying to run some arcade games on the Pi, but I have no idea what Mame version it is running and I ran into missing file troubles:
Donkey Kong plays without some sounds (for example jump sound is missing).
Galaga88 says it misses g88_prg6.rom
Does this mean it runs a really old Mame version, or a very new one?

Technical Area / Getting nice joysticks
« on: November 21, 2013, 11:10:19 AM »
I am trying to find a good source for joysticks. I have the idea that my beloved Sanwa JLW-TM-8 is no longer made:

I got them in the past from Ultimarc, but the last batch was a low quality clone stick, definitely not the same as a real JLW-TM-8.
What is a good light J-stick right now? I want a not too long small chrome shaft and small ball, light spring and short throw. Preferable in the 15-20€ range.

« on: November 20, 2013, 04:47:03 PM »
Remember the Retro Space Experience booth with handhelds? I had a small cardboard Retro Space on display. Now it is finally ready and working. It has a Bluetooth interface to connect to your iPad or Galaxy Note.

Accepting orders next week.

Arcade Lifestyle / Kaikan Shibuya is no more... CRY!
« on: August 20, 2013, 10:41:14 AM »
If you went to Japan, you had to go to Tokyo, and you had to go to Shibuya to play at Kaikan.
But this weekend, they closed the place. I'm happy that I visited it back in 2009. It was a great place.

This book has a nice 8-page article about it:

I'm thinking of putting all my handhelds as a perk on Indiegogo to fund my book, but I want to expose it on Ebay (to get it found).
My idea was to use Ebay France petite annonces as my intention is not to set up a real auction there.
Now Petite annonces is discontinued, but Ebay France offers a cheap simple option on the regular site. In a way even better as that is searched by international Ebay sites as well.

My question is: can I use it to set up a make an offer sale on it or bidding from say 9000€? Do you pay any fees on that (with one picture the listing itselfs seems free).? I basically only want exposure and people to contact me if interested. Not sell on Ebay itself.

On the Dutch Ebay site this is impossible.

If I buy something in the US, and have it shipped, I have to pay VAT from 22€ value, and above about 100€ import duties as well.
How is that for people in the US buying from us Europeans? Can't find any info on it.

Hi arcade fans and handheld lovers,

Last 2 years I have been working on my book "2kB of Fun". A massive book on our beloved handhelds. Later this week I will let you know when it is going to be released and how to get it, but for now, please support me by liking my Facebook page about the book:

Arcade Lifestyle / Was the crash of 1983 really bad?
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:47:52 PM »
I'm reading a bit into the history of video games, and everybody talks about the big crash of 1983. But was it really that bad?
The numbers are merely based on Arcade revenue en Atari 2600/5200/Colecovision sales in the US.

What did Europe and Japan do in that period?

Another problem with the numbers:
Commodore for example sold 400000 C64's/month in 1983-1985. If you multiply that with the 400$ price, it almost accounts for a third of the dip of the crash, and Commodore is NOT included in the bad revenue figures. We also had Sinclair, MSX, Apple II etc. Games shifted from consoles to home computers. As a kid, 90% of the games I played, I played on speccies and C64's. Even on P2000's by Philips. The home computer WAS games industry. Nobody wrote a letter on them or put a database in a spreadsheet. Tapes were ROM, saving stuff was a theory. So games were the only well functioning use.
It is very hard to find revenue indexes of Consoles+Arcade+Home computers.

Does anybody know a nice source to get a more accurate idea of what happened in that time. Now I see the video games industry in the US collapsed from 8 billion$ in 1982 to 100000$ in 1985, which IMO is complete nonsense.

I was watching Ruby Sparks last night, and at 34.30, they visit a cool looking arcade, with some classics like Ms. Pac Man. The movie is from 2012 and set in Los Angeles. Any idea which one it is?
I could not find the scene on Youtube, so you might need to get the complete movie.

Meetings, Exhibition, Events... / Indigo Road Show at GDC
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:44:06 PM »
If all goes well, and FedEx makes it in time to San Francisco, Dutch Game Garden is going to show the new Retro Space road edition cabinet at the GDC in 3 weeks.
Today I was at the furniture maker to see the first sample:

Tomorrow all 24 cabs in Flatpack IKEA-like version are ready to be shipped.

Arcade Lifestyle / Cardboard cabinets
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:25:44 AM »
Cool stuff hapening these days:
The client who formerly ordered 26 white full-blown Retro Space cabs, now wants a "disposable" version.
So we are making a cardboard version.
Here is the model (1:2 scale), but this week we will start the press to punch out big ones! Woohoo!

All the rest / From Queen to King
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:55:50 PM »
So Bea is stepping down from the Throne, and Double-U-Alex climbs up. What do you guys think?
Queensday becomes Kingsday and moves to 27th of April. So if you plan to visit Holland for flee markets next year, come 4 days earlier. Wait... You say I can't count?.... No, in 2014 it is 4 days earlier as 27-4 is on Sunday. Even with Maxima, they are still reformed Christians, so Sunday is holy.

Technical Area / MAWS info somewhere available
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:02:22 PM »
I was interested in the ROM-size of various arcade games, but I cannot find the information. I used to visit MAWS for that, but this site seems down. Does anybody know a site with the MAWS information?
