Here we are, as promised here : shots from my Euro Joust!

Let start with some external view of the machine

It's in very good shape considering it's 30 years old. The biggest damage is in the T molding here and there (and the cut wires, obviously  >:()

Let check the identity of this machine:

There are stickers with this number on the external part of the machine and on the monitor:

Different is instead the number on the PCB's

Green label?

As you can see, almost all the cables have been cut  :?, so it will not be easy to resto the functionality of the machine... anyhow, we are not in a hurry  ;D

Let see the Control Panel: player one side detail

player two side

control panel overview

The Marquee:

Under the marquee; i didnt expect to find a neon but a bulb light system: maybe the previous owner made some modification (in addition to the cables cut  )

Thats all folks for now, now it's time to disassemble as much as possible and cleaning

Technical Area / Williams Joust schematics
« on: June 30, 2010, 11:02:07 AM »
Waiting for my Joust to come home  i am organising the restore. The machine has no cables at all (the previous owner cut them to replace in a second moment... that is: NEVER) and the PSU is not working. The manual schematics are not so clear for what concerns the voltages i will need. So, the question is, could someone link here some good schematics to help me facing this problem? I found a good tutorial on how to interface a Joust-Robotron-Defender PCB to a jamma cabinet, but i wanna something else to be sure those schematics are correct  ;D

Technical Area / Joust: is this machine original?
« on: June 18, 2010, 07:24:35 PM »
Hi all,

i have the opportunity to buy a joust, here... in Italy  :D

I only have three photoes taken by the seller, but i cannot state if the machine is original or a good copy...

The only things i can state ATM are:

- the cab is in good shape
- the CPO artwork is a little used (is it original? it looks different from the images i can find on the net  :-\)
- some wood work has been done internally
- at some point in it's life, it was converted to a joust 2 (the monitor is vertical, but it should be horizontal)

The cab doesn't work, but the seller says that only the wirnig and the power supply should be changed...

Technical Area / First PCB repair: Super Contra!
« on: May 01, 2010, 05:44:59 PM »
Hi all,

i have a "Super Contra" PCB with issues (a guy i bought some spare monitors from gave me for free  ::)).

The first issue is the volume: the pot is broken so it will need a new one. No prob for this.
The second issue is graphic: i have horizontal lines (red and white in the demo screens, white and white in game) from th left to right of the screen (see pict).

I have never faced a PCB problem till now, so i don't have an idea of the modus operandi to face this sort of problems. Every suggestion would be very appreciated, thanks in advance

This started at 300 euros and now is at 200 euros... not my favourite game (nor one of my 100 favourites) but the price is good so i think it should be put to the attention of the community  ;)

Technical Area / Wells Gardner 19k7901 problems
« on: December 30, 2009, 10:05:47 AM »
Hi all,

i have recently bought a dedicated atari badlands cab with dead monitor. I am trying to repair it, with the intention of keeping the original Wells Gardner 19K7901 mounted by the factory.

Initially the problem was the fuse: it instantly blows when switching on the amusement machine. Then, i changed the HOT (Q11 in the manual): the fuse was ok now, but arcs where visible in the upper part of the flyback transformer (the one surrounded by black tape). After a couple of this, the HOT was shorted again... maybe this was the starting problem...

My first try will be the isolation of the upper part of the flyback to see if this stop arcs.

Then, i i wanna change the flyback transformer, but i wanna be sure to buy the correct one (check the photo).

I heard of the possibility of a Zenith version of this monitor (and this would be bad considering that those are very rare) and i had a TZ 1167-01 HOT originally...

can someone confirm which flyback i have with this infoes? Where can i buy it?

Thanks a lot

PS: what's the name of that upper part, surrounded by black tape (i am trying to isolate it in this way...)

Arcade Lifestyle / Atari Badlands: trip and restoration
« on: December 25, 2009, 11:50:20 AM »
Hi all,

as recently stated with the topic "an arcade quiz", i am the proud owner of an Atari badlands cab. Now the machine is in my house, then here some photo of the "beast" and some additional  ;D

Ok, the trip was planned for saturday the 19th of dicember, but adverse meteo conditions made me quit the idea  :'(

Fortunately, i was able to reschedule the (veeeery short) trip for the 24th of december in the morning. It was a rainy day when my bottom sit in the station wagon my fried gave me...  :'(  anyhow, after 10 minutes it stopped... pfiu!

I didn't made photoes of the trip because there was a lot of fog, and in addition i was scared by the possibility that the machine could not fit into the car i was using.... but my prayes where listen to (by the god of metal!)

i had to use some trick in order to let the machine enter the car

Very slowly, but inesorably, the amusement machine arrived in my city and is now in a hospitable room  :D

the whole "thing"

One side

The other side

Let check the identity of this machine

As you can see, the machine is really good aestetics conditions (internally and externally)  but it doesnt work, and now let see how to repair it.

First of all, i inspected the powers: the monitor (a Wells Gardner 19k7901) is black, and makes no noise. Considering that 130V ac arrives, maibe it doesn't receive a video signal, then it doesnt start. The controls are ok. The PCB receive the voltages needeed (i checked the alimentation) and a coulple of red lights are turned on. There's a third light that doesn't turn on and i dont know if it could be a signal of malfunctioning...

Shouldnt the orange circled light turn on when the PCB is on?

So, i thought that the problem was the PCB. I made the additional test to see if the problem was the montor or the PCB: when everithing is on, if i give a credit i should hear some sound (even if the monitor is black): yes, the sound is there so the problem lies in the monitor
any help would be appreciated to face the problem an let this machine work like in the 90's

« on: December 14, 2009, 11:29:50 AM »
Hi all,

i cannot resist: i recently bought a dedicated cabinet and i wanna share my enjoy with you, arcade fans. I will not post photoes of the stuff untill all the components are at my home (actually i have only the control panel in my garage), but i wanna post some "hint" photo, just to see if we can "deduce" what game is this...  :D

Advisory: please, if you solve the quiz, don't write the answer for now (wait the last hint please  ;D) but feel free to comment, of course  :pac:

ok, the first hint

Technical Area / Drive cab controls on PC
« on: December 02, 2009, 09:47:38 AM »
Hi all, trying to figure how to connect my generic drive cab to a PC, i saw that a tutorial was cited by DarthNuno here

https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=74.0

but the site cited is down. Is there another similar tutorial?

I do think that the "thing" is easy: just place the pot of your cab (in my case a 5K pot with "central zero") to the PCB of a PC analog pad with the same pot value and characteristic(for example, i saw that a PS2 dual shock pad could be ok, but not a Xbox360 pad... what about PC pads? We cannot know this before buying and "sectioning" the pad  :-\ ... this approach could be expensive)... or, change the pot of your cab with a pot with the same characteristics of the pot used in the joypad

Any other idea? Is this the right approach?

thanks!

Technical Area / monitor flickering
« on: December 01, 2009, 10:51:29 AM »
Hi,

i am going to repair my third cab. It's a generic cab mounting an Hantarex mtc 900/e monitor. The probelm i am trying to face is a strange flickering of the image (looks like the flickering you can experience with interlaced images on crt monitors, but it cant be because i am using a jamma PCB). Considering that:

- The PCB is working (i used two different working PCB's, tested in another cab)
- The generator is OK (i checked the outputs and i have constant power sourcing)

so, it should be the monitor PCB, but what should i check?

thanks in advance

All the rest / Hi all, nice to meet you :)
« on: December 01, 2009, 10:46:23 AM »
Hi all guys, this is my first post here. Let me say that your roadtrips are very entertaining (and sometimes incredible adventures) and reading those is very relaxing for me.

Anyhow, my name is Marco, i come from Italy and i am an arcade fan. I own 3 (generic) cabs, two of them working, the latest waiting for some repair. Any cab was a different adventure but, my bad, i did not took photoes of my roadtrips in Italy.

nice to be here!
