Galaxian Theater / Re: Galaxian 3 Official Materials Book

I got in the second copy and debinded it today. There's some glue residue I need to scrape off but it all went pretty well.

Galaxian Theater / Galaxian 3 Official Materials Book

Long time no see...I was browsing around a Japanese shopping proxy (as you do) and on a whim searched up Galaxian 3 items, ended up coming across this lovely book. It's got a short story in it as well as concept art and probably more goodies I haven't seen yet. Needless to say I've got 2 copies of this arriving, one is gonna be debinded and scanned in because I think this needs to be shared with folks.

I just checked and it seems Namco has an overseas version of the Legendary shirt store, but most of the shirts aren't available there...

https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/DE449387-1BF7-4CC8-BA43-0DAC01369FE9

It also looks like the JP store won't ship overseas because the Ridge Racer shirt is in stock on the overseas store but listed as "unavailable" in the Japanese store for me. Unless they plan on stocking more shirts on the overseas store it sounds like the only way may be through a proxy site such as ZenMarket.

That said, 20 bucks for a Ridge Racer shirt is nice.

Just opened recently, the "Namco Legendary" store...they have shirts for both games in a variety of colors as well as many other UGSF titles including the canceled New Space Order and Starblade Operation Blue Planet  :o Amazon Japan ships worldwide too, so presumably once these are in stock you'll be able to buy them, just keep in mind Japan has different shirt sizes and I think you have to go up a size for it to be US/etc.

Galaxian Theater / Re: ## Road Trip ## GALAXIAN THEATER from NAMCO !!!

Hope they open soon so more folks can get a chance to play G3. I have no idea if I'll ever find myself in the Netherlands at any point but if I do and they're open...I know where I'm gonna be, haha

I noticed that different options in the game seem to unlock over either multiple plays or just making it really far, not sure which but it seems more the former. Got past the Cannon Seed/Red Eye type section and the red commander guy came out but I got hit by a stray laser on my last shield...

Galaxian Theater / Re: Making of Galaxian3!

There is a video of this 1990 "location" version on Youtube elsewhere, but it's a camcorder recording from a visitor that is a little hard to see. Glad to see this one though!

From what I can tell there are quite a few differences:

  • The graphics are obviously not as detailed, probably a very early version of Starblade's hardware (the graphics for Cannon Seed's explosions here look like Red Eye). The final version of GH-28 seemed to use an upgraded board?
  • Laser fire graphics aren't straight beams, just blobs in a chain. I saw that in the other video.
  • Music is different, probably a demo composition by the Namco musicians (Ayako Saso, Shinji Hosoe, et al)
  • I recall the briefing video possibly being changed too.
  • The projectors seem to be out of sync (I'm guessing they had to crunch on finishing it because the beginning of the video shows what seems to be some last minute development), watch closely as the Dragoon departs and enters hyperspace...the right display on camera falls out of sync several times and it's noticeable.

I'm guessing they decided to switch to Laserdisc backgrounds after this, because everything looks polygon board generated like Starblade and they probably wanted something more realistic for the attraction background wise.

I think the POD system used for Star Wars is also the one they use for the Gundam POD games, which are way cool. I'm betting they used Starblade as a test bed for that system after it got canceled.

Nice! Never seen the Japanese flyer before, the one on the Arcade Flyer Archive is the US one which has a kitschy B-movie cover  ;D

Someone uploaded the LD music to Nicovideo if you want to hear it all: http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm14981436

I like the first track in particular that plays over the intro, "Space Genetation"...I wonder where the track titles are from?

It looks like they used sprite scaling for it instead of the polygon + LD combo Galaxian 3 uses.

Wow, I wonder if anyone from Taiwan played that version. It looks like it's the GM-16 version because I don't see the "arms" for the hydraulics attached in the photo.

Galaxian Theater / Galaxian 3 videos on Youtube being blocked
« on: August 01, 2016, 06:02:53 PM »
This is just a sort of PSA, but ever since Youtube introduced its "Red" subscription service last year several Japanese companies did not get on board with it and as a result of their terms certain videos containing music licensed by those companies are blocked in the US. Unfortunately this also includes several Namco titles, because Victor Entertainment produced the soundtrack CDs for them, and as a result videos of the Galaxian 3 Laserdisc on Youtube are blocked as well.  :?

The only way to get around this as far as I can tell is using a proxy or VPN service and selecting a European server (or Japanese) because Victor has only blocked the videos in the US. I think it might be possible for the video owners to dispute the copyright too since the blocking is done by a bot, but it seems like Retro Reality (one of the users that uploaded the Galaxian 3 LD along with a few other Namco LDs) has been unable to get it working.

Should also mention this only affects uploads of the game soundtracks and the LD and not stuff like recordings of the game (like the ones of GH-28 and GT-6). It seems like emulator footage is subject to it because a few folks I know have had to be careful when uploading videos of certain Namco arcade titles due to Victor's bot algorithm coming across it and blocking it due to the fact that they simply released the soundtrack on CD at one point...quite preposterous.

I think the UGSF link at the bottom of the Arcade Game Series website is just there because Galaxian/Galaga are part of the UGSF timeline...it would still be neat if they at least put Starblade in that though.
