'Business' Area : Buy/Sell/Trade / Robotron/Defender plastic moniter bezel
« on: November 23, 2013, 01:01:51 PM »
I'm after one of the plastic moniter surround bezel from either a Robotron or a Defender...I'm hopefully gonna be building a scratch replica of a Euro Robotron so I no that if someone has a US surround i'll trim it down to fit...

Quartercade sell them but what with the postage costs form the States and the possibility of import duty it would quickly turn very expensive...Also Quartercade have a minimum $50 order for overseas purchases (postage isn't included in the $50 either) and the surrounds are only $25 and I only want the one item....

what ya got chaps ?

Arcade Lifestyle / Starwars Upright (pic heavy)
« on: September 16, 2012, 08:02:12 PM »
I've managed to get so far with restoring my SW upright....

I bought this a few mths back from 'Hatster' (Kevin). It came from sunny Spain via a friend of his,to which he dropped it at Rav's place ready for collection by Martin.

The cab was owned by Forcefulfil before Kevin bought it from him,but Kevin wasn't that keen on the cab so decided to sell it on to me  ;D..

The cab is my Holy Grail of Video games,i were a big fan of the films as a kid (hence all my Starwars toys as well) and also a big arcade gaming fan,so when Starwars got released in 83',well it was just a natural thing that i were drawn to the game. The first arcade i saw and played this in was The Starlight Rooms on Lower Briggate in Leeds (sadly the arcade is no longer there) and after a few games i were hooked Thumbs Up

The Starlight wasn't the only arcade to have the machine in,there was another arcade that had the cockpit version in and this was called 'The Original Penny Arcade' this was situated just off 'Eastgate' in Leeds and that version just blew me away, climbing into the seat and just feeling 'engulfed' in the whole cab was a fantastic experience for me Big smile,so i did end up playing the cockpit version far more than the upright version....

Anyway jump forward some 29 years and i stumbled upon Jamma+,DLF and UKVAC (after reading about them on a BMX forum i go on) and i saw a couple of Starwars cabs that were either up for sale or had been sold some mths previous (me looking through old threads on Jamma+ and UKVAC) and i said to myself i just had to have one (a cockpit would have been awesome but sadly i just didn't have the room for such a beast) so an upright was the one to hunt for.I sold a few of my restored BMX bikes to raise the cash (the only way i could have afforded one)....

A few mths later i'd raised enough cash to be able to afford one so i made room in my bedroom for it (with the blessing from my wife as well Heart) and i put up a wanted on all the arcade forums i go on....

I ended up with a nice PM from Kevin saying he had one but the game just wasn't to his taste so a few pm's back & forth and a deal was struck.. 8)

The cab as i got it from Kevin,

The cab wasn't in the mintiest of condition but it was in working order which for me was the important thing as i'm not the best at electric work, saying that when i first got it delievered by Martin the cab wouldn't 'fire up' properly,to say i were gutted was an understatement LOL,anyway after a few pm's to Kevin i got it working (the Vector board had come loose from the 'inter connecting' board so there were all signs of power up but no life on screen).Once the beast fired up to life i were 12 years of age all over again  ;D

So i slowly started to strip down and clean up what i could without causing too much fuss....

To my delight i found out that it had the Amplifone deflection board still there but sadly not a proper Vector moniter, but it was an Amplifone 'set up' (so i've been told anyway and you guys know more about that than me)

The rear door was buggered so i made another one out of Birch Ply and also i fitted better 1"x1" pieces for the door to go against...

I also replaced a few of the 'skeleton' for want of a better word pieces including the piece that the speakers are attached to,

Around the moniter as well,

The coin doors and surround were quiet rusty and batteredalso the coin reject flaps were as well,

So i had them powder coated in Satin black,

The coin box,Yoke controller, test switch panel and CPO i had powder coated in Satin black as well,

In the meantime whilst all these were at the powdercoaters i bought a repop 'Kick plate' decal,CPO decal and Yoke controller decal,

Also i when i took the Yoke apart i broke the Anchor Pin and the large plastic 'spacer washer' needed replacing,

I did replace the 'bumpers' as well but i forgot to take any photos of them

Originally where i got the anchor pin/nut from didn't have any instock at the time of me ordering them so i did have a friend of mine fabricate one for me from the original one,

When i got the fabricated one from my mate 'video game parts' that i'd originally ordered one from managed to find me one so i have 2 of the bloody things now ,still its a spare i suppose...

I stared to build up the Yoke controller once all the bits were back from powdercoating,

Looks brand new and minty fresh now  8)

I did replace the 'front' panel as well as it was ballaxed on the bottom with water damage.I weren't gonna put a fresh new decal on a piece of buggered board,

After rewiring the Yoke (which was a bit of a nightmare tbh as like i say i ain't that good with electrical work) but it came all good in the end (whilst rebuilding the Yoke i did put the 'X POT' and 'Y POT' on the wrong way round so when i pulled up on the controller the 'crosshairs' went left and vica versa DOH.... )

Also i applied both the Yoke and CPO decals and tbh it did look a 1000 times better than before Cool also when the coin doors and coin mechs (which do still work spot on BTW) all fitted back i stood back and the whole cab for me looks super clean and 100% better than when i got the machine originally (ps i did buy some new barrel locks as well as the keys to the original locks disappeared years ago)

Originally the main PCB cage was missing from the cab when i bought it so i managed to source one to replace it,

It did come with an 'EMI shield PCB' as i bought them from the States but i read that cabs made in Ireland (mines Irish BTW) didn't come with them fitted,so its surplus to requirements....

The cab after all decals were fitted,

I also bought an original Atari coin box for it as well (i know its gonna be on 'Free Play' majority of the time but it was only cheap so i though what the hell i'll have it  ;D)

I also managed to get a few old 10p pieces from my old man (for some reason he's got a few older coins),

There are a few bits to still restore but i'm happy with my Starwars atm,its playable and it looks super cool in my bedroom  8)

Bits to still sort,

The side art is in good condition so i'll not be replacing that,

The bits that do stand out are the cig burns on the plastic 'shroud' (think that's what i heard it called)

If i could get a better replacement shroud i would but the one i have is ok for now.....

I did buy one of Vector Labs Starwars/Empire Strikes Back kits but tbh i fitted the kit and i've just hardly played ESB on it so i took it back out and replaced the original chips...

So this is surplus to requirements and will be sold on soon.

That's about it guys an gals, sorry for the long drawn out thread but i've tried to get as much detail out about this as i can, there are still like i say the odd bit of resto to do on it but i'll do that when i have more spare cash to throw at it  ;D

Technical Area / Starwars problem
« on: August 16, 2012, 11:41:39 PM »
Just had a play on Starwars then popped out for 1/4hr came back for another go and the screen has gone blank ??  (the machine wasn't turned off or anything inbetween plays) There's still power going to the fan, marquee lights, coin mech lights but no sign of life on the screen....(can't hear any sound from the speakers either....The red lights on the PCB boards aren't lit up know though but the HV board is lit up and the deflection board light is lit up...

I've been reading through various threads on KLOV and i'm seeing a rough pattern of it could be the ARII board ? (i don't have a mulitmeter to test anything though)...I've read about this 'spot killer' but how do you find out if it is that ? is there any visible sign's to look for on any of the boards ?

Technical Area / SW yoke wiring
« on: August 05, 2012, 11:49:42 AM »
What's to correct 'gauge' of wiring that's on the SW yoke..?

Here's a piccy of mine....as you can see the wiring is a bit of a botch job (does work but i'm wanting to tidy it all up)

I can get wiring from Swallow Amusements,

http://www.coin.demon.co.uk/-misc.htm#e

But they do stock differant gauges of wiring...

Also i'm wanting to replace the connectors at the ends,

now Swallow does these as well but again in a few differant sizes...which ones will i need ?  (i only need the 'male' parts if you no what i mean)

Technical Area / SW Yoke microswitch screws
« on: July 07, 2012, 07:36:46 PM »
Where's the best place to get a set of the very small screws that hold the microswitches in place inside the Yoke controller ? i assume they won't be metric size with them being 'old' so to speak.....

'Business' Area : Buy/Sell/Trade / Wanted:Starwars Upright
« on: April 09, 2012, 06:31:11 PM »
Yes i know its a big ask but does anyone have one that's in good working order they wish to part with ?

I'm 100% in the market for one and do have good money waiting for the right one.I'm not soley after a Amplifone one just as long as it plays good and very little electrical work is needed to get it working (not that clued up on electrics tbh )

I've put this wanted up on J+ and UKVAC as well.Reason i have only put it up on here is that alot of you guys seem to be situated outside of the UK and i'm not sure weather you guys will ship over to the UK ?

'Business' Area : Buy/Sell/Trade / Vectrex
« on: February 07, 2012, 12:07:02 AM »
For sale my boxed Vectrex games console. The instuctions for the machine are there also the screen cover for the built in game Minestorm.I only have the top portion of the polystyrene 'inner packaging'.

Its in perfect working order and comes with 5 games all boxed which all have their own instructions and screen covers.

The only issue is with the joystick. Its does work but it feels like that its come slightly 'loose' from inside. The joystick does 'angle towards' the left when not in use and it sounds like a fixing screw of sorts has come loose and its not holding the joystick 'central' so to speak. You can see what i mean in the 4th picture down.Apart from that it does work perfectly

Not really keen in shipping outside of the UK tbh you guys (sorry i know there seems to be a lot of members that live outside of the UK on the forum as well)

anyway its up for £130 posted.Paypal gift please...

A small vid clip of the game,

If your not sure about the Gift option with paypal i'll understand as i am a noob on here and no one has bought anything from me so don't really no me.You can add another £5 for 'peace of mind' to cover yourself if you wish, but i can assure any potential buyer i'm 100% trustworthy with all my sales (i'm a Moderator on the BMX forum 'Burnerworld' under the same name 'Russ J')

First post in thread and then PM please

Russ...Thumbs Up

Not sure if they are frowned upon on DLF but i picked one up at a carboot fair a few years back all in working order with the slight exception of the controller joystick, its a bit 'buggered' but still does work.It had a few games with it all boxed with the plastic screen covers. Its in my loft at the moment i'll get it down and take a few photos of it.Also got an Atari 2600 as well (did have the original 'woody' as a kid but thats long since gone) with my 2600 i've a few game cartridges (can't remember what now) and i paid the 'handsome price' of £10 sterling (bought it off my wifes friend about 10 years ago 8))

Always loved the game 'Adventure' on it but haven't got that one now though. Also liked (despite it not being that popular at the time) Raiders Of The Lost Ark  8) also like the 'E.T.' game as well  yes it was shite and did help in the demise of the Atari home console but i liked it

All the rest / Hello from Leeds
« on: January 08, 2012, 12:52:21 AM »
Hi everyone my names Russ (pretty obvious going by my username :D) i'm from Leeds,West Yorkshire,UK....

Not got any arcade machines at the moment (sadly not a lot of room in my house for such gems as my wife would say  :( :D)..I'm a cabinet maker by trade so making myself an arcade cabinet would not be that hard but the electronic stuff just goes over my head

My favorite arcade machines when i were a kid (i'm 41 now so i grew up in the 'golden age' of video arcade machines) were Starwars,Gyruss,Robotron 2084,Dragons Lair,Space Ace,Defender and Tron....

I have a lot of these games on the 'Mame' games compilation for the PC (read through a lot of threads on here and i see 'Mame' is quiet popular) but to try and play Starwars on Mame is so hard with the mouse controlling the curser

If anyone knows Leeds at all i used to go to the 'Starlight Rooms' arcade and the 'Mill Hill' arcade and the 'Original penny' arcade to get my 'game buzz'  8) sadly they are all shut down now as far as i know...

I do have my 'high scores' on the said machines above but obviously no way of 'proving' them  :( ...I see there is a 'high scores' thread on the forum as well so i'll put my scores in there, its up to you guys weather you believe me or course  ;) but they are all 100% true and not fabricated in anyway...

I also have some of the 'Midway Arcade Treasures' games on the PS2 and the PS1 (Williams Arcade Greatest Hits) but they are not like playing the real thing as you guys no  :-\...I haven't played (or seen) a classic arcade machine for years and would love to get 'to grips' with a Robotron again  8)

Anyway enough waffling  its great to be here  8)

Russ.... ;D
