Dragon's Lair / Space Ace / Re: The ultimate Dragons Lair cel

That Smithee cel is great. There is no way that guy is getting $10,000 for his cel. I got this cel about 10 years ago for $70:

Great find! I own a M.A.C.H. 3 myself, and love it. This is the only arcade game I do not keep on free play. While the game is on free play it does not have an attract mode. The game starts and keeps playing until all the ships are destroyed.

A great thing about the cabinet is you can play other laser disc games in it. Us vs Them is a game by Warren (Q*Bert) Davis. It is a parody of 1950's sci-fi movies. It is a lot of fun to play. The Us vs Them disc can be hard to find.

You can also play Cobra Command in the M.A.C.H. 3 cabinet. That is what is currently in my cabinet right now.

Was your cabinet heavy? When i was trying to get it in my house it felt like the bottom was filled with bricks!

The series has been delayed again. Issue 4 did not come out on October 28. The only release date I see now for issue 4 is on January 6, 2010.

Great story! I got to meet Billy and Walter at the CGE in 2003. They were both very nice. Billy and I talked awhile about the arcade games we own. He made a joke about if a guest thought he had too many games in his house then it was time for the guest to leave. I loved KoK but thought Billy was portrayed unfairly. My wife and sister enjoyed the movie but hated Billy. I told them he is a great guy.

That signature on the Pac-Man shirt is great. I have thought about ordering the hot sauce. It sound delicious.

This is probably old news, but Billy does have a baseball card. Topps made a set of baseball cards and included insert cards of various other non-sport stars. His card states he was the first to play a perfect game of Pac-Man. They made a regular card, a signed card, and a 'relic' card, which contains a piece of one of his USA ties.

That is great news. Anyone near the area in 2011 should stop by and meet Don and Gary. They are both very nice guys and are great to talk to. When I glanced at the topic I thought it said Gary Coleman will be opening Finny's Lair. That would have been...strange.

Great idea! I have several cels also. My Dragon's Lair arcade cabinet is signed by the 4 creators (Bluth, Goldman, Dyer, and Pomeroy). I also have several sketches by Don Bluth.

I do have some pretty rare items, including the original cover art to issue 1 of the Dragon's Lair comic book. I have about half of the pages to issue 1, and a few pages from issues 2 and 3.

My best item is probably the original painting that was used for the cover art for the Super Nintendo Dragon's Lair. I bought it from a former Data East employee.

That is great! I listened to the audio file on the way to work this morning. I remember watching this episode when it came on in 1983 and have been hunting for it online and could never find it.  That is amazing someone posted the video to it days after you posted the audio.

Dragon's Lair / Space Ace / Dragon's Lair on the Nintendo DS

This sounds interesting:

http://ds.ign.com/articles/799/799644p1.html

They are trying to find a publisher. Click on this link:

http://www.wizardryengineering.com/

You can send them an e-mail saying you want this on the DS.

Thanks for posting the pics. I would not use the place you rented that trailer from again. I cannot believe they wanted that much money from you for being late with a trailer. Those late fees were insane.

Have you decided what to do with DL2? I know a standard door size is 30" and DL2 width is around 29.75" so that would be a tight fit. I am buying a house next month and will have a finished den to move my games into. I plan on getting a DL2 at some point and may have the same  problem you are having.

Congrats again for this great find.! Remember to check the
http://www.d-l-p.com for Dave Hallock's Space Ace enhanced roms. If you get bored playing the original way the roms change a few moves up and the scenes are changed to make the scene sequences fit together better.

Bruno does a great job on documenting his adventures. Make sure you take some good pics!

You can find complete Thayer's Quest kits on eBay but they can run $1200 and up. You need the laser disc, pcb and control panel. I pieced mine together.  I got a laser disc a few years ago on eBay. I was trying to find a SA marquee on the Dragon's Lair Project and found a guy that had one. He lived 1 mile form my house and collected laser disc games. I bought a TQ marquee, pcb and control panel for $250. That was a bargain. I also bought his Cliff Hanger (yes, a working Cliff Hanger) and his MACH 3. He delivered them himself.

The hardest part to find in the keyboard control panel. The membrane keyboard did have problems after time. If you can find the disc and pcb there is a hack you can use at  http://www.d-l-p.com
That will allow you to use a regular keyboard instead of the hard to find control panel.

You are going to have so much fun with those games. There is nothing better than being able to play those games whenever you want.

One extra bit of advice is to unplug the games when you are not playing. Plugging them into a surge protector is another good idea. I unplug my surge protectors when the games are not on. This may not be necessary but I am paranoid about anything happening to my games. I do not want to replace the power supplies.

That will be a long drive!  The first thing I would do is take the laser discs out of the players. The DL and SA players are probably wired into the machines so they will have to be powered on to open them. Bring some album covers to store them in on the trip. If you have any laser disc covers laying around that would be even better.

I would also take the players out of the machines. The DL2 probably uses a Sony LDP-1450 whic is pretty reliable . DL and SA use either a PR-7820 or a LD-V1000.  The PR-7820 was used in earlier machines and is not very reliable. The LD-V1000 was used in later machines and is not as durable as the LDP-1450 but is better thatn the PR-7820. Either case I would not transport them in the machines. My DL had the LD-V1000 bolted into the laser disc drawer and was shipped  in the machine and it was fine. The machine still plays great. I still would have preferred the shipper to ship my player separately.

I had a truck and of course when I went to pick it up at the Overnite terminal it started to rain! Carry a tarp and some rope (of course).

Most people I know transport the games upright. The games are old and laying them down can cause parts to slide around and create new problems. But when I got a MACH 3 (very heavy) we had to lay it down and push it in my living room. When we stood it up and hooked the player back in the machine it worked fine.

Good luck!  Everything should be fine. You are going to have a lot of fun!
You might be able to find a Thayer's Quest kit which plugs into either DL or SA. I pieced one together a few years ago and played TQ in my DL for quite awhile.

Congrats! Those are very reasonable prices on the 3 machines.  I am trying to buy a bigger house and might look into getting a DL2 machine at some point.

Since you now have a DL and a SA machine here is what I would do next:
Try to find the Dragon's Lair limited edition laser disc. This disc is a new pressing done around 2002. The images look great. It also has prototype footage that was not used in the original game. They only made 400 of them but they do pop up on ebay every now and then. If you go to The Dragon's Lair Project http://www.d-l-p.com you can find the rom images Dave Hallock created that allow you to play the prototype footage.

Dave also programmed a set of Space Ace roms that changes the scene ordering and moves. It make the gameplay flow more smoothly.

You are going to have a lot of fun with those games. Welcome to laser disc gaming!

Dragon's Lair / Space Ace / Has anybody here met Don Bluth?
« on: April 10, 2007, 07:58:23 PM »
I got to meet Don Bluth 3 times. Twice at the Classic Gamin Expo (2001-2002) and at DragonCon in 2001. I got him and Gary Goldman, Rick Dyer and John Pomeroy to sign my Dragon's Lair marquee and my Dragon's Lair and Space Ace posters. At DragonCon I bought a Dragon's Lair cel from them and Don drew a sketch of Dirk, Daphne and Singe for me and Mrs. Brisby and Littlefoot for my wife.  The picture below is from DragonCon and is of Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and myself. They are really great guys and could not have been nicer. The last time I saw them Gary rememberd me and we talked about his house and other things. It was like we were old friends.

Dragon's Lair / Space Ace / Dragon's Lair comics are out
« on: April 03, 2007, 07:28:57 PM »
Some of you may have heard that in 2003 a series of Dragon's lair comics were released. Only issues 1-3 came out.

Another company bought the rights to the series and started publishing them. Issues 1-3 were collected and released as another issue 1. This issue featured a new Don Bluth cover.

The new issue #2 that came out is actually issue #4 . There was a variant sketch cover to issue #2 (limited to 100 copies) that showed the pencils of Don Bluth that was used for the new issue #1:

Issue #3(#5) came out last week. The final issue has not come out yet.

A Space Ace series came out in 2003 also but it met the same fate as the Dragon's Lair series. Issues 1-3 came out but not 4-6. There are no plans right now to release 4-6.

Dragon's Lair and Space Ace can be ordered from here:

http://www.grahamcrackers.com

Just do a search for Dragon's Lair or Space Ace.

The store is located in the US but they do ship Internationally.
