Title: TRACK AND FIELD UPRIGHT CAB - Scratch Built Replica
Post by: scr33n on August 06, 2009, 02:12:06 PM

So guys it's time to open a new topic for my new project .....

TRACK AND FIELD UPRIGHT CAB from scratch :spaceace: :spaceace:

I love the game and the cab  :-* (I remember the challenges with my childhood friends, and the broken fingers  :? :P), of course here in Italy I have never

seen the original cab.... it's time to build it with my hands and fingers

After only 3 weeks of research (this time I'm lucky  ;D) I found what I needed:

First package from ebay.com received yesterday:

(http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/6039/paccocoindoor.jpg) (http://img34.imageshack.us/i/paccocoindoor.jpg/)

(original CENTURI coin door from a Track and field cab ... note the blue color close to the screws):

(http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9458/coindoor1.jpg) (http://img401.imageshack.us/i/coindoor1.jpg/)

(http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2860/coindoor2.jpg) (http://img20.imageshack.us/i/coindoor2.jpg/)

Great condition .... a painted and it will be like new.

I have enjoyed reading your posts on your replica builds.

I have done a few replica builds like you before and track and field was one I started to do some some prelim work on a couple of years ago.

Like you I collected all the parts and managed to get some dimensions with some help on the BYOAC website. See my post http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=66709.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=66709.0). Some of the dimensions I got there might help you out.

I used the dimensions gained form BYOAC and by using the side art to work out the curves managed to make a MDF template for the sides. That is as far as I got with the project as I seem to have spent the last 2 years flying from New York to London every week as part of my work. I have been thinking of finally finishing my project at the end of the summer so I look forward to watching how you get on.

Interesting project, this game is a sure party winner. Are you going to have other games in it? like:
Hyper sports, 88 games, Gold Medalist, Field Day, Recordbreaker (4 buttons?).
Thanks for posting pictures of all your projects...

Of course I'll help you  ;)

... so it'will be very difficult for me to access the cabinet for the moment :-\

Sorry Bruno the last 2 request:

- measure N.7 only the cab or with leg leveler?

- And how do you power on the cab? Your Gyruss cab has this switch? If yes where is located? (Inside the cab or outside?) - I can not find images about.... It's a original Centuri power switch so .....

Today I've received the most important thing - SIDEARTS from Quarterarcade:

Package N.3

(http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/5904/quarter01paccosidearts.jpg) (http://img41.imageshack.us/i/quarter01paccosidearts.jpg/)

inside, a nice roll:

(http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4/quarter02rotoloside.jpg) (http://img196.imageshack.us/i/quarter02rotoloside.jpg/)

Woooowww I love the smell of new sidearts  :-* :-*

Hey.... they are still stuck together:

(http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/8/quarter03sidearts1.jpg) (http://img151.imageshack.us/i/quarter03sidearts1.jpg/)

(http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3040/quarter04sidearts2.jpg) (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/quarter04sidearts2.jpg/)

ok no problem, I must separate them with a cutter .... the cut is already mapped

Done:

(http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4685/quarter05sideartstaglia.jpg) (http://img11.imageshack.us/i/quarter05sideartstaglia.jpg/)

Perfect ... now I 've the track ('n field) for the plan (the design of the side with the right measure)  :spaceace: :spaceace:

looks like you've got everythzing together now  :)

question - just curious: do you have to pick your packages from the states up at the customs (and pay additional fees) or do they somehow "slip through"?

Quarterarcade international shipping policies (outside US):

6. We declare the full value of any item shipped outside the U.S. on any custom forms we are required to file and mark the items as merchandise. Depending on what country you live in you may be required to pay custom/import taxes.

So .... I paid €18 (to a value of $ 160 - Customs officers do not calculate shipping costs, I think  ???) - in Italy it's better this way, 2 days and parcels leaving the customs, no more addictional control, everything is declared ...

Hi Scrr33n,

Good to see you recieved you sideart!
I just recieved mine (well, still at the postoffice because i wasn't home at delivery).

Two pieces of Donkey Kong sideart, USD 54.00.
Shipped to the Netherlands, add USD 35.00.
--------------------------------------------- +
= USD 90.00 (62 EURO)

+ Package handling Netherlands (not customs) 23 EURO.
85 EURO is expensive for two stickers :(

Huh ? Why did you have to pay the extra 23 if it wasn't customs ?

Said about Quarterarcade not doing the favor. There are plenty others who will do it all the time...

it´s been quite a while sience i had to pay toll, and i think it´s the same as yours. But in order to pay the toll fee here, i have to pay 150 DKK (21€ handeling fee) and toll on the postage!!!! - which is added to the bill.. :(

I am building a replica. More about the project here www.donkeykongarcade.blogspot.com

@muerto and supperully
Yeah I hate those extra costs in addition to already high shipping costs :(.
And what really painfull, original Nintendo cabinets can be found pretty easy in the USA for 200-300 dollars.

i think i'll go for those white german nintendo donkey kong cabinets from now on. those pop up from time to time, i could have a nice dk row with dk, dk2, dk3 and dk jr. and each cab could be painted in its respective colour if you don't like to have all of them in white. don't know if those american control panels would fit on the german cabinets though ...
i'll steal scr33n's other thread for that question ;D

Ok I have all the necessary measures so I can start planning .....

with the help of sidearts I got the right curves:

(http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/9770/plan1.jpg) (http://img267.imageshack.us/i/plan1.jpg/)

and the right angle of the control panel, glass and all wood panels

(http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/7263/plan2v.jpg) (http://img26.imageshack.us/i/plan2v.jpg/)

you're simply a genius! does this get easier the more you do it or is it a new challenge each time around?

Are you handy with autocad or some other drawing software ?

would be an idea to digitalize the cab plans, since the jakobud plans are slighty of measure as i recall

It's a new challenge ..... must find the right measures, tons of cab pictures and finally, stress Bruno  :P :-* :-*

No Etienne, everything handmade, I prefer this method and honestly I don't know how to use programs like AutoCAD or similar.

Not a bad idea, but at the moment I don't have the right equipment (scanner  :-\).

thats why i asked if you where good in some drawing program  ;)

any other way we could digitalize it ?

i mean if you send me the measurements on how you made the paperversion, i can try to draw it in some program

or i can make just a PDF with measures like jakobud, but then the correct measurements  8)

Question with regards to the leg leveler plates - did you simply screw them on? I need to do this to a cab this weekend and was wondering - screws or bolts? And the wood hole for the leveler to go up through the base, is it wider than the leg to give it a little space or is it "tight" to the shaft?

Tnx!

Yes only screw for plates, and the hole for the leveler give a little space (I can tell you more than 5 mm).

is there any need for the bolts? if not, i wouldn't use them (original or not)!

Scr33n uses metal L brackets , so IMHO its totally not nessesary to apply these bolts seen from a constructive view.

if they are original there, it could be a consideration, but thats up to Screen how genuine he wants to make this replica.

it looks that the original have them there , and also in the sidepanels, so i would say if you leave them out on the sidepanels , i would not put them on the front side

can't see why not even if you put them there just for "decorative" purposes. if you think that they might catch onto things and scrape the sides of the cab next to it, then maybe not as a precaution.

your work is very impressive  :) I strongly suggest you to create a company for selling 'scratch built replica' classics. I'm SURE it will have a certain success here, in Europe... because this era is the one of the REVIVAL, and most of the 'classics' cabinets are now extremely hard to catch, even for the collectors like us, so imagine a simple fan of arcade game  ::) Mission impossible for him  :P

The right color (Blue RAL 5010) taken from these 2 old track & field control panel latch (blue is darker, damn digital camera ):

(http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/1253/paintc.jpg) (http://img200.imageshack.us/i/paintc.jpg/)

first coat of blue and white:

second coat ... the white is perfect  :-* :-* Blue is a bit better  but in my opinion needs at least three coats of paint

Because there still is a difference between a newly built replica with emulation inside and an original that has lasted about 25 years and has seen a history of arcade life. The "feeling" is different.  (and we all love roadtrips ;) )

Don't get me wrong, I totally and completely admire and love scr33n's incredible work and I sure consider doing one (Q*bert, when Jrok's board comes out). For us Europeans who cannot reach (or at least cannot reach at affordable prices) original cabs, this is a great alternative !  :spaceace: :spaceace:

Galaga Pacman and Donkey Kong from jakobud.com with some modifications with the help of Darthnuno  :-* :-* :-*

Track and Field using the sidearts shape and size and downloading dozens of images from the net (here also helped by Darthnuno, with the measures of his Gyruss cab  :-*)

I'm still doing tests, AAE is great, but Misfitmame (and only Misfitmame???) with some options enabled (draw antialiased vector, flicker etc...) gave me great results, using a 19" Vga Crt monitor..... and hey I've never played Tempest on a vector monitor so I can not make comparisons  :P ....

Great work as usual !

Never played tempest but I know this is a famous vector game.

I suggest you use a 21" PC monitor capable of 1600x1200 : this will make the game look like on original vector monitor.

Some ideas of other classics of all time for your next builds : q*bert, karate champ (data east), kung-fu master, gouls'n ghosts, ghosts'n goblins, street fighter II, marble madness, rolling thunder, shinobi, dragon's lair (lol), out run (this one should be difficult), etc...

Tempest without a vector monitor? There's something so very wrong about that. Sorry, but there really is! Some of the emulators do an OK job of vector emulation but vector monitors really aren't THAT hard to find and get working... surely its worth it for such an iconic game? No?

Sorry for the late response.

Yeah, a standard CRT PC monitor could simulate really well vectors at high res (1600x1200 or higher).

You'll have to try AAE too.

If you don't have a vector monitor yet, than go with a 20" PC monitor, you'll get very good result... not perfect of course, but I can assure you the fun will be there  ;) I played that setup on the Fred's (Arcadefever) cabinet and it rocks... you'll really enjoy the game in that way too  :-* ... of course, it won't exclude the move into a real XY monitor later, but at last, you'll have something playable  8) I'm also using a PC monitor inside my Star Wars cockpit, and I'm very happy with it  :-*

PS : I suggest you to open a new topic for that project  ;)

Of course the 20" PC monitor is a viable solution for a repro cab. Nothing against it. In fact, it's better to reserve the vector monitors for original cabs :D

But I keep seeing people writing stuff like that it looks exactly like the real thing, and that's just plain untrue. Mostly people who have never seen a real vector monitor write that stuff...but it's a great solution like f.i. Bruno's SW cockpit, that he found completely empty. Or a new repro cab. :D

just a short question: why don't you guys do those keychains yourselves? they're easy to make, cost almost nothing and you can have as many as you like for one cab!

Yep you're right Ully, but where did you get the plastic containers (sorry I don't know how to call it  :?) impossible to find here in Italy with this shape  ...

Do you have a link???

Thanks!!!

the inserts have the perfect size for the arcade flyers, no need to crop / cut off anything! the seller also carries them in quantities of 100, but 50 should be good for a start  ;D

If there is anyone out there with access to a Track & Field cabinet get me
the following dimension measurements? PLEAAAAASE?!?

I need the coordinate measurements of points 1-6.

A is the back of the cab.

Point 1 is measurements B and J (Yes, I'm aware of the joke.)
Point 2 is measurements C and I
Point 3 is measurements D and K (or H... yeah I made two :P )
Point 4 is measurements E and G
Point 5 is measurements F at the bottom of the cab
Point 6 is an extra point that I would appreciate if you could get the
measurement from the "back" of the cab and the height from the bottom as
well.

I'm making a cab from scratch and if someone could help with this it would
save me a LOT of hair pulling.

All these measures are not necessary if you buy the sidearts: http://www.quarterarcade.com/Game.aspx/6789

check here my technique: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=885.30

and you can find all necessary measures inside this post: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=885.0 (Thanks goes to Bruno  :-* :-* :-*)

and .... a cab without sidearts isn't a cab

Yes, I am trying to get the tracing pattern down.  However, I have no parts to go from so getting exact angles is a little problematic.  Also, since I am not making a full size cab (yet), purchasing the reproduction sideart at this point is a little much.  This is why I'm relying on the kindness and graciousness of people like yourselves to help me.

The pictures you provided are great(!!!) and I thank you very much for them! Using the pictures that you provided would be extremely useful for someone who has parts as a guide.  However, I don't have the individual parts to guide me, and the proportions are skewed from the angle of the camera.  As you can tell from the pictures, the right angles at the bottom of the cabinet aren't square. Therefore, I can't use them to even eyeball the distances needed.  I could try using Photoshop to make them square, but the proportions on the other parts of the cab would be changed as well.  Unless someone gets a straight on perpendicular camera shot from a 50 meters away and zooms into the size of the cab, the proportions are always going to be "off".

There's also measurements that I don't have at all like speaker grill cut outs, air holes, etc.

The goal of this project, once I figure everything out, is to shrink the cabinet proportionally to ~75% of it's original size.  If this all goes well, and I *do* have all the correct measurements, I could look into putting the full size cabinet measurements into a drawing program like the cabs on jakobud.com or even building plans like Kyle Lindstrom's amazing documents.

Again, thank you everyone for your help. Hopefully, you all will still like to help me since I might need more help later.

This is from the first vector file I made with the first submitted measurements.  However, this is the main trouble spot right now, as I am not 100% sure that this is how the curve looks.:

Can anyone look at their machine and verify that the inside curve looks like that?  It looks small to me.  Measurements for that triangle would be cool. ;)

If someone could please help me, I need the some dimensions from the control panel. I don't need the button layout or the width. I simply need the top, front and bottom (including and excluding the hinge) lengths. I'm looking to do this area tomorrow (early) so any help would greatly be appreciated.

I believe the top is 9 and 5/16ths.

Thanks!

P.S. If anyone wants to go above and beyond the call of duty, a tracing of the side on paper and scanned would be GREATLY appreciated! (However, I'll gladly accept the simple measurements.)

I know this is an old thread, but im up to a scratch build myself.
I need little more info.

ThatArtGuy: Did you find the inside measurement?

scr33n: Thanks for an avesome build! But where did the power plate go? The on/off switch.
Searched the internet for back pictures with no luck.

Anyone with a dedicated Track & Field cabinet can take a pic of backside?

Thanks! /Magnus

Screen, we are loosing your wonderful scratch builds as the pictures are no longer attached.  :(

These have been a wonderful resource to all us who have/are/will build replicas of our own, is there some way to refresh the pictures so all this information is not lost?

I too am part way through a scratch build T&F upright and was turning to this thread for some of the measurements which sadly are gone :(

Can you please refresh these? or does someone else have a way? Thank you mate :)
