Title: DONKEY KONG RED CAB - Scratch Built Replica
Post by: scr33n on May 14, 2009, 06:38:11 PM
YESSSS!!!! Finally I've found a Nintendo Coin Door (After 2 years of research and e-bay auctions lost  :?).

All the items necessary for the project, original control panel, coin door, bezel retainer, speaker, sidearts etc...  (except on the bezel, which I still have to order) are flying over the ocean

so... now it's DONKEY KONG TIME and as for the Pacman cab, I need some measures (jakobud plans are not very accurate  :?)..... Who can help me?

Bruno  :-* :-* Level 42 (with his Mario bros cab  :-* :-*) , 5oomiles (with his red Donkey kong cab  :-* :-*) please I need your help.

I start with a few measures:

One question for you guys ....

someone has bought from arcadeshop.com? Is a good site? Can I order without problem?

Thanks for the info  :spaceace:
Title: Re: DONKEY KONG RED CAB - Scratch Built Replica - PRELIMINARY
Post by: level42 on May 18, 2009, 10:58:40 PM
You get very short replies and he will declare full value on customs form _and_ include an invoice on the outside, resulting in me having to pay 30 euro's to the mail man......

I did e-mail about it and it seemed he was willing to send it without invoice and full declaration so check this before ordering.

He's very reliable otherwise. What do you want to order, there may be (cheaper) alternatives.

Thanks for the info Level42  :-* :-*

I have to order the DK bezel, Mikesarcade.com (Kim, great guy and fast shipping) currently is out of stock (4 weeks of waiting), so I thought Arcadeshop.com, do you know alternatives?  ???

Or maybe it's better that I wait Mikesarcade.com? I have ordered other times with no problems  :-* :-*

Title: Re: DONKEY KONG RED CAB - Scratch Built Replica - PRELIMINARY

Kim is Mike's girlfriend or wife I suppose and seems to handle all the orders :D

Yeah I ordered with Mike too, excellent. Much better in communications than AS IMHO.
But AS is generally cheaper.

I thought Twistedquarter (an e-bay seller with a good reputation) was also selling DK bezels but obviously not (now):
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/TWISTEDQUARTER_Cooling-Fans_W0QQ_fsubZ5340399QQ_sidZ33020490?_nkw=donkey&submit=Search

Wouldn't know of any other sources really.

someone knows the difference? (The seller has written: Very rare old stock no copyright date on face  ???)

At this point, you should consider to build few Nintendo cabs in a row... they are so rare here in Europe, and I'm sure you should be able to sell few replica very fast  ::) ;)

Thank you! :)
Yes I am building a DK cabinet as well. But been busy with it much too long though :(
Other arcade related things keep me busy as well. Like a Sega Astro City japanese candy cabinet.

Scr33n is doing a superb job. If I could do it over, I would definetly change a couple of things.
for instance, never screw from the outside of the cabinet! :(
I had to fill all the screwholes multiple times. And still not perfect.

Scr33n is right about the Jakobud plans not being to faithful to the original cab.
Some things are missing in the plans, monitor support, speaker grill is not exactly original, top-front sindpanel corner (at marque height) etc.
But you find out those things while building and comparing to original DK cab photo's.
Maybe we have to adjust those plans and send comments to Jakobud.

Good luck on the cab Scr33n! You're doing an outstanding job.
Your previous cabs were spot on, this will too.

for instance, never screw from the outside of the cabinet! :(
I had to fill all the screwholes multiple times. And still not perfect.

Scr33n is a fan of metal brackets, and they work fine for as we see on his pacman and galaga.

i myself want to build one day one too, and i was thinking to use this kind of wood connections

somebody have experience with these ? (exept for the ikea closets  ;))

Ok .... today is the bezel day ..... let's go

(http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/3775/bezel2k.jpg) (http://img37.imageshack.us/i/bezel2k.jpg/)

and finally the bezel in position, this was the most difficult part:

Awesome work so far Scr33n!
About the bezel retainer, you can see how it is originally mounted on this picture:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CXccc8RIW9I/ScgoZFHJGtI/AAAAAAAABmI/s8Xhv6G7JdA/s1600-h/DK+091308+019.jpg

This guy at www.donkeykongrestore.blogspot.com is restoring a DK cab, doing a good job and taking lots of pics!
Which comes in handy for replica builders.

Good luck and I follow your progress with great interest.

This is looking like a nintendo cab !  8)

my guess is that you are going to mame it ?

are you also putting the D2K (http://www.jeffsromhack.com/products/d2k.htm) roms in, or just keep it original ?

I agree with you, if you talk about the official release of mame.

but according to this (http://www.tinkerz.com/misfitmame/) site it is as they state "finally woking" in a modified version of mame

I tried it , and it works indeed perfectly
Title: Re: DONKEY KONG RED CAB - Scratch Built Replica - WIP

That's  NOT what I mean. I mean that Jeff put a shitload of work in creating D2K and is not getting anything back from people who play it on MAME !

Imagine how many hours he must have put in creating this. Then he starts to sell the kits that can be played on the original DK PCB set. Of course (just a matter of time) there's some asshole that reads the ROMs and spreads them around.

What would YOU do if you see all your efforts down the drain like that ? No more of these projects. GAME OVER !

Look, I'm not against MAME and using the old roms. They earned their money years ago. And I _DON'T_ care about wether it's legal or not.

I _DO_ care about the MORAL issue of simply not paying anything for someone's hard work on a very special project like that. If he gets nothing back for it, we as the small community called arcade fans will not see many more (other) projects like this happening !

There's been a lot of discussion about it here:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=74719.0

I haven't played D2K yet because I will be ordering the kit for my DK PCB set and I don't want to spoil the fun running it on MAME already.

At least donate some money on Jeff's website ( http://www.jeffsromhack.com/products/d2k.htm ) if you play it on MAME so he will be motivated for.....D3K maybe. Or D2K jr. ?

Title: Re: DONKEY KONG RED CAB - Scratch Built Replica - WIP

I never said that if he is going to use it on mame, that he can do that without buying the romset (pay for the licence on other words) or without donating for the work of the person that made this.

you have a good point in my opinion,

my question was just if he was planning to use this "expansion"

D3K or D2Kjr will be cool !

Just something that has been haunting me since I've got my Nintendo cab:

Did you think about a rotating monitor ? That would open the game up to games such as MB and Popeye. Or will you simply build another one for the horizontal games ? :D

Do you think the CRT actually fits between the sides diagonally ? I think it should be a (very narrow) fit....

as for the paint job: are you using a brush / roller or a spray gun?

The Neon police has to report several violations on this thread.

For once and for always:

Neon:

Fluorescent:  (TL as we call it):

The essential difference: Neon light is where the gas itself lights. F.i. that red neon in my picture is a completely clear tube when turned off. Fluorescent light uses gas that does not light up itself, but it causes the coating on the inside of the tube to light up.
Yes, some neon's (actually most neons) use a coating too, but this is only to enhance the color, it's still the gas itself that lights up.

Not that any of this matters at all, just the neon-police trying to prevent any misunderstandings Woohahahahahahahaah !

(Insane mode off)

Back on topic !!!! Going strong, looking good !!! This will turn out to one sweet cab ! Can't wait to see the end result.

About rotating, check this out:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Garage/9000/arcade/index.htm

This cab is 24 Inches on the inside, which is about 61 cm. From the specs the Nintendo cab is 60cm. on the outside. It looks like the rotating disc on that cab could be made a tiny bit smaller. It will be extremely tight probably, or maybe impossible....I will investigate it as soon as my SW cockpit is done....

Oh, and if you want I've got an original Nintendo fluorescent holder for you. Problem is.....it wants 100 VAC !!!  (I replaced mine with a similar set-up like you did):

About rotating like Level42 mentions,
that probably doesn't fit. I tried it in my DK cab with a round wooden board just like that website shows.
Maybe if your monitor is smaller than 21" it will fit. My screen is 21" (55cm) and that doesn't fit.

But rotating in you cab can be done very easy! (manual).
If you make the wooden board which supports the monitor SQUARE, you can just rotate it 90 degrees and you have a horizontal display!
That's how I have done it.

I see you used L-brackets for mounting the wooden support panel, that would take a long time refitting after rotating.
I used two wooden beams attached to the sidepanels of the cab, and the wooden monitor support panel slides and rest OVER that.
Drilled 4 holes for fastening the monitorpanel to the beams with bolts. They don't need to be tightend very good,
it must just hold the monitorpanel in place.

Look at my pic:

Yes in case anyone misunderstood, it was just meant for a good laugh.

@Joeks: The original cab has a 19" monitor. OK 2" might not sound like much, but it could be just those extra 5 cm. we need......

I can already rotate my monitor manually because my cab is a Radar Scope cab and that came with the "monitor in wooden box" in vertical position. I already turned it to be able to play MB (and "modified (= cut off part off) the wooden box) to make it fit inside the cab.....  However, I have to rotate it from the back so that's not very handy....

Mhhhhh!!!!! I love Tempest  :-* :-* But a little problem, vector monitor  :? :-[

The Neon police has to report several violations on this thread.

looking great screen, you must have the most pristine arcade of all with all the brand new replicas :)

Andre, this rotating cab idea, are these widebody nintendo cabs, would that make the difference?
Anyway , being as nintendo cabs are so rare for you , would it not be worth building one to the width you need?

After the second coat of black it's time to start the resto of original control panel:

rust (normal after 28 years  :o):

(http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/8716/cp1uzc.jpg) (http://img25.imageshack.us/i/cp1uzc.jpg/)

I decided to cover the CP with resistant adhesive paper:

(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/985/cp2k.jpg) (http://img514.imageshack.us/i/cp2k.jpg/)

(http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7692/cp3.jpg) (http://img150.imageshack.us/i/cp3.jpg/)

(http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/889/cp4mqv.jpg) (http://img32.imageshack.us/i/cp4mqv.jpg/)

I like the result, and all the CP imperfections are hidden  :P ;D:

(http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/504/cp5.jpg) (http://img341.imageshack.us/i/cp5.jpg/)

....... and the original joystick restoration:

rust, rust and rust:

(http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3219/joy1.jpg) (http://img196.imageshack.us/i/joy1.jpg/)

(http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9812/joy2.jpg) (http://img189.imageshack.us/i/joy2.jpg/)

final result:

(http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6461/joy3.jpg) (http://img145.imageshack.us/i/joy3.jpg/)

and now a doubt  ???, original buttons or Mikesarcade repro DK buttons? There is a slight difference, see:

(http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/6783/cp6button.jpg) (http://img194.imageshack.us/i/cp6button.jpg/)

for now I use the repro, joystick and buttons in positions:

(http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6287/cp7.jpg) (http://img43.imageshack.us/i/cp7.jpg/)

and finally T-molding:

My MB had one original complete orange button, but the other was not complete. So I ordered and used Mike's too but I would prefer to have the originals.

I do still have the original blue one's for game start.

Thanks for those shots of the vinyl, maybe I can find some here now with that name...

I read a tip about the coin mech frontplates. Someone told me to simply sand them and then put them outside with rainy weather etc. The natural corrosion of the aluminium would give it it's original look again.....adter a day or 10....

Not a bad idea, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

I'm not really sure if those were used on all DK uprights....some seem to have them, some don't.....

wonderful!!! however i would again have used my "artistic freedom" to put the instruction sticker in a "better" position. somehow it seems pretty off to me. i know you want it as original as possible, but sometimes those stickers were simply slapped on in the old days to get the game into the arcade without thinking about symmetry. but that's just my two cents!

but overall: an incredible job at an enormous speed. how much did you pay for everything in the end (or is that a secret)? must have been a lot of mones i guess!

one question remains: what's next?  ;) 8)

The coin sticker is perfecly centered with control panel (like the original  :P ;)) is the nintendo coin door which is a bit strange  :?  :-\

look at this pic, from original cab:

It's a secret  8) 8) .... more or less 600 euros  :-X :o but now I'm happy  :spaceace:

one question remains: what's next?  ;) 8)

I do not know, but I think that this is the last project  :'( :'(

too many problems to recover original pieces .....

other cabs that I like to have .... track & field and tempest  :-* :-*

Can You tell the specific of the pc that are in use and a diagram of the connections?
I'm curoius and I'm thinking how to do the same thing, but for a DL/SA cab (not enough time to start now the project).

that's less than i would have imagined. i guess you won't get an original red dk cab here in europe for that price!

I do not know, but I think that this is the last project  :'( :'(

i guess eventually one will be able to get EVERYTHING, but it might take some time. tempest would be a blast, but you'd need a vector monitor for that. track & field on the other hand shouldn't be too difficult to duplicate - and it's AN INCREDIBLE GAME!!! go for gold  ;)

once again: congratulations, you're a replica genius!!!

Etienne, and your personal record?

I would get the 300,000 points .....   :spaceace:

300.000 i can only dream of that  ;D , no im not so super with donkey kong

the highest i scored is around the 120.000 , and that was when i had a really lucky game.

but its very different , sometimes you have alot of wild barrels, and sometimes they dont appear.

but that is the challenge of DK i think , and also why i like it , alot of random elements

In the "No Hammer" challenge i scored last week 84800 points

and im trying to beat myself ofcourse

Absolutely fantastic!  I appreciate your attention to detail.  Very, very nice.

I have a couple of questions if you have time, and don't mind (of course):

1. What kind of sander did you use on the coin door?  I have a metal control panel that I'd like to restore, and wasn't sure how to "sand" it down, remove the paint, etc.

2. To follow up on that, what kind of primer and paint did you use on the coin door?  The black paint looks like it has texture.

3. To clean the bolts, etc for the coin door, what liquid did you use?  Did it remove all of the rust, etc?

I appreciate your time - and again, great job!

Steve

2. Normal primer for metal, and the black is normal 'black opaque spray paint'

3. Yes, it's a rust remove and it works great  :spaceace:

So guys,

after 3 days of hard play I decided to change the buttons (Mikesarcade repro) with the original ones.

The repro have a bad response (too much pressure on the button)  :-\ so it's time to clean the old and certainly better original buttons  :-* :-*:

buttons disassembled (some cigarettes burning one blue one but is not a problem):

(http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5554/buttonoriginal1.jpg) (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/buttonoriginal1.jpg/)

reassembled:

in position .... works perfectly  :-* :-*  and after 28 years  8) ;D

great response, even with a soft touch  :-*

Looks like DK3 uses a different spot for the button:

maybe they wanted to make a "standard" panel for multiple games ?
