Title: Euro Joust needs Marquee fixed up....
Post by: level42 on April 06, 2009, 05:36:17 PM
OK, I'm turning to our European friends here. Luigi scanned the marquee of his Joust (Euro version) cab. It looks nice enough, but it could need some things improved a bit like the usual spots and scratches. It would be ideal if this could be traced/vectorized of course. I guess the colors could need a lit bit of correction too.

This is a smaller sized version of the scan.

Could anyone find the time to fix this up a bit ?

It would be a great contribution to the Euro collecting community ;) :D

(O and yes it would be great to be able to print it and have it on my Euro Joust too ;) )

What process do you use from scan to vector? You can't be hand tracing that in the time you turn them around.....

Dex?!? I'm in the process of doing the Rolling Thunder CPO so it may help if you could let me know whether you hand trace or use some other magic.

Sorry dude, I hand trace everything. If you need a hand with the CPO let me know (Gotta love a 30 inch screen and a WACOM tablet) Oh, and not sleeping much helps  ;D Nothing like playing Space Ace at 4am some days

Ahhh you use a tablet, that must speed the process up immensely. I don't have such luxury :)

Do you bother emulating the half tone colouring or just substitute a flat colour?

Like it ? Are you kidding ?

It's way beyond what I would have hoped for !!!

That must be a very tedious job to do by hand, but I guess the only proper way......

I'm totally amazed....!  I am totally thankful !

What technique do you use to Half Tone?

Do you build up a load of circles (blending a line of circles then creating lots of lines of those circles) and create a clipping mask over it? I used that technique and when I resize the vector the colours royally f*ck up!

Example of my Rolling Thunder marquee resized. See how his trousers and the enemies mask screw up:

When output at the original size it looks superb....

I know very little about all this stuff, but I assume that this one would be relatively easy to vectorize/recolor ?

This is the CP of my NSM-Namco Puckman cab that I scanned and very clumsy collated (which shows my talents at this work :D).

This Puckman I have seems to be the only known one in the world. All others I've seen are different. So, getting a replacement CPO is out of the question at this moment.

This art is directly silk screened on the CP but the only way to improve this is have a fixed up version printed on vinyl.

The original colors are luckely included in the scans: under the buttons there was still some protective foil that covered the CP inks for it's entire lifetime. Luckely all available colors are in there.

I am already extremely happy that Dex invested all this time into the Joust but I am ONLY wondering if this would also be so much work or could require less time because of the relative simple artwork ? Or maybe I can do this one myself ?

Thanks !!!

That would be really easy to vector. Get a copy of Adobe Illustrator and have a go. It's a lot easier than you would imagine, I did my Rolling Thunder marquee and loved the learning experience!

For the ghosts, you would only have to do one, copy and reflect. The Puckmen you would only have to do one and copy twice. All the coloured lines / curves would be simple.

I got the full Adobe suite on my Mac but.....can't refuse that offer Dex....  ;D

I can provide the scans I made, that would be the best source to work from I guess ?

They're not collated yet though....

Scans are a total of 35 MB I'll see if I can spread them over a number of e-mails.

You could try and upload them to http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/ (http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/) in the unclean or Non-Vector section. However, I had problems uploading to this site.

Or you could use this excellent site, http://www.sendthisfile.com/ (http://www.sendthisfile.com/), you upload to the site it emails a link to the recipient so they can download it. Works really well!

Anyway, I'll have them soon enough and I'll 'try' and put them together and see.

Dex? Answering this will really help me out the CPO has loads of Halftone on it. Does your technique scale well?

I checked again, and I am now convinced this _is_ a vinyl CPO !

I scraped away a little part at one of the bolt holes near the joystick and it's definitely bare metal under it. I already thought so because of the structure, a metal CPO doesn't have a structure like that. It's just very thin vinyl.

If I understand correctly, you mean the black gaps in the structure ? It looks somewhat like a fingerprint...

I guess it would be best to completely fill the colors. The new vinyl on which it will be printed has it's own structure and I'll be fine with that.

Don't know if I already mentioned this, but all the holes around the joystick can be filled up. My end-goal is to have no holes there anymore. Originally there were 4 of those holes. Clearly, they later changed the joystick that needed to be mounted at an angle compared to the original and so they made those extra holes. The original holes were simply filled up with a bolt and nut.

It all looks ugly IMHO. I will mounting an original Midway Pac Man joystick in there.

Anyway if you could mail me an example I would know for sure I guess :D

Hey,

Been a while since I've been on. I've started a new job and now just waiting on my mate to organise his work truck so I can go and pick up my cabs and PC and other stuff I have at a mates place in Sydney (it's about 1000 kilometres 1 way) I was to go back to Sydney and work for a bit longer (hence leaving the cabs and PC there) but got sick and didn't end up going back to work there.

Anyway, I hope to have it all sorted out in the next week or so. And trust me the wait will be worth it as I have spent a LOT of time on the artwork for the members of this board  :D

I'll be in touch.

Guys, I've got a Mac. The files were found by spotlight in a couple of microseconds  ;D ;D

Etienne, they're in your Upload FTP folder.

The scan is courtesy of Luigi ! :)

The good thing is that Etienne is close enough to do the color matching with my current (US) marquee, I am assuming the colors are (almost) identical....

Thanks, when its finished, it will be available for free at Zorg's Vectorlib  ;)

And maybe (if you like and some other guy's have patience) i can take it in a print run for you (mirrorprinted on transparentvinyl and backpasted with white.

That saves "startup costs" if we can do it in one go..

like i did with the marquee and bezel for bela, which where done in one go:
https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2109.msg26597#msg26597

but for now, i still have alot of vectoring to do  ::)

While working (starting) on the jouster, i did not have good feeling..

I was not happy with the detail of the original, and started to look for another source, and with succes..

Here the file i was working with:

and here the file i found ..

Look at the difference in detail  :o

that can only mean one thing...., start again, using the last file  ::)

Sorry to dig such an old post but I have to restore a Euro Joust cab and the marquee (glass) got broken during tranport....
Desperatly trying to find a vector or at least good quality picture but no luck, so...how did the story end?  ;)

It ended with my last post.
AFAIK Level 42 has found a replacement marquee, so i never continued this.

I do have all the files still here.
if you want i can "wetransfer" them.

You mean you have a scan that must be touched up first?

It needs completely redrawing to be printable quality. I have good dpi scans, but the detail is still low.

I just realised Level42 has much better scans than me, his retains the colour and detail. I should have looked at page 1 first!

Yes, that would be a better starting point especially as it's a vector. The fire and pathways can be recreated but it looks like the birds and rider are the same.
