Title: Hail to the MASTER SIMULATION and his Mentor - SEGA R360
Post by: Maverick on February 26, 2009, 10:40:03 PM
Guys,

I don't know who many of you in your life really tried this awesome Definitive simulator (360 for real)

http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=844

I played 3 times in my whole life:

1) 1993 in Rome in a amusement center (today a videopoker club..:(

2) 1994 in London at the Sega Center at trocadero (where I played also the DLX version of RIDGE RACER of an entire wall (Amazing), Daytona and there was also galaxian 3 I remember..

3) 1999 Tokyo disney

The first time when I finished my play time I was speechless, even if diappointed

The game inside, as many know, is not after burner 2 (a master piece still today of the arcade dog-fight genre) but a mix of Gloc (a real shame if compared to the master piece made by yu suzuki)

Kevin, the man, who realized the dream to collect and restore this machine (it is not a simple mission believe me) was able to study and change the game inside (to the rare wing war)

See the story:

see the video !

He has been able after many years to change the firmware's commands!!

He hacked the machine!!!!

and this means that if someone is capable to understand his teachings

IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE THE R 360 for AFTER BURNER OR WITH A PC WITH MAME!!

Can you just imagine that?

think, come back from work and turn on this beast and play the latest ace combat's Ps3 game.. (you're drooling? me too!)

AARRGH!!

See for your self

I hope one day Kevin will decide to make this firmware at least for After burner

I would even ready to pay him! But he says he is not interested at the moment(sigh!) :o

Hope something will make change his mind

he is the only person who can do it (sega apart) in the whole world

Hope for the better

I can't wait to play ANY game inside the R360  Gosh!

Ps= Bruno, please we'got to make something!

We should make something to convince him to release a custom firmware..

I played it for the first time in London at the Sega Center / Trocadero, in the 90's (91 or 92... cannot remember)

I was with two other friends and I'm sure one of them took a picture when I was playing on! The bad think is I don't have that picture  I can tell you I would be so happy to see me, at the age of 18 or 19, playing on that historical game!!! I always ask them if they can find back this picture for me... but no luck so far  :-\ :'(

Here's a picture of me, same location in London, few years ago (in January 2006 if I remember well) :

This was the last time I played on it... few months later... the game was gone :'(

... 1994 in London at the Sega Center at trocadero (where I played also the DLX version of RIDGE RACER of an entire wall (Amazing), Daytona and there was also galaxian 3 I remember..

Argh... I've never seen any picture of the Galaxian Theater located in the Sega Center at trocadero  :'(

I remember really well even because soon as you were entering at the tracadero

star wars arcade was suddenly on your left

turning left going straight to the corridor and turning right at the end
there were:

on the left side an 8  link sega racing game (probably was Daytona)

on the right the namco theater

Ps= we've got to do something for the firmware!!!

Until when it will be not possible to use the r360 for other games or for After burner

the r360 will be just a prototype not working at its 100% full operation capability

We' ve to do something!

Yes, you're right. Even if he won't be useful for a lot of people, it's important for the community ;)

By the way, I know a R360 owner in France : James (on the right) :-*

His R360 doesn't work for the moment, but I really hope he'll be able to fix it one day.

Maybe It could be useful if he can help us to understand the Eprom's way of working with the custom interface

See here:

http://mysite.verizon.net/res8aiig/R360wire.jpg

and his explanation here:

Wiring Harness Adapter

This is the adapter harness that I refer to in my first magazine article (see the link above).

http://www.gameroommagazine.com/index.php?main_page=pubs_product_book_info&products_id=163

I had to make this adapter so that the G-LOC game boards could be plugged into my first R360 that is wired for the Wing War game board set.

>(Translated: Kevin has been able to adapt commands of a model Y in a model 1 set system!! and without instructions!!)

I now have the ability to change games (between G-LOC and Wing War) in my R360. Many people ask me if other games like PC based flight simulators, race cars, rollercoaster or other software can be adapted to run in the R360.

The answer is yes, but not easily. The G-LOC and Wing War board sets and the "Video and Drive" board (that drive the motors) are all run by custom firmware that is placed into EPROMs.

>(eproms inside the motherboard of the game I think)

Every game would require different firmware codes to interpret it's controls and joystick positions. This code can be created, but it would take a person knowledgeable in hardware design, software development, and emulation.

My many and varied collecting interests prevent me from dedicating the time required to this level of effort. So it is not a task that I ever plan to take on.

I think first of all, it would be better to work on a similar sega motherboard with moving eproms (like after burner that has instructions for the movement of the DLX cabinet)

after understood the eprom's commands, and how they work

it can be possibile to pass the instructions to a good mame compiler

But first of all, we must proceed step by step from the easier path

It is a complex hardware to work on I think

Incredible!

In the sega website inside the 360 flyer says that the 360 can be controlled even by a  laserdisk!!!

"DRIVE MOTOR"  (DRIVE BOARD Z80CPUx2) (Laser disk control possible)

I'm crying!

Think to play in a 360 - Astron Belt or Firefox! AAARRGHH!!!

I don't even want to think about it!

It is too much!

Well, it says that a connection to a laserdisc player was foreseen (with also video and audio inputs of course), so the game boards could control a laserdisc player if proper firmware was developed.
Since the game came out in 1991, it makes perfectly sense, because around that era LD was still an option for arcade games (Mad Dog McCree, Dragon's lair 2, etc). Sega itself was still interested in LD use and the proof is Time Traveler. But just a few years ahead the quick progress of CD-ROM and computer graphics definitely pulled the plug to LD diffusion in any entertainment environment.

Yes matteo, that's right

I think LD has been considered fairly the delevopment system where to amaze the audience until the mid 90's

I never imagine too that data cd rom's may have had become so widely spread in PC's during 1994 (year of its climax)

(I remember that the game that allowed its necessity has been Lucasfilm's Rebel Assault)

Anyway,

I think we should focus on this preservation project as Bruno said

it is important for the community and would be a real revolution for the simulation games, don't we?

Mav

Ps= I think we should gather a team for this single project

I send you my contact on PM
