Title: Dragon's Lair 3D Models
Post by: gbowles on February 24, 2009, 07:13:47 AM
Been working on modeling all of the Dragons' Lair Characters, and wanted to share the work in progress. Here's Dirk, currently being worked on. Please let me know what you think!

Thank you much, I was kinda worried about this one. I too am a big fan of hand drawn animation and Bluth / DL / SA, though understand some people can be possessive about their connection to a memory. I first wanted to create a duplicate of the character, but then went off in a slightly different direction. I decided to keep it true to the original design but give it some real world physics also. Again thank you. Singe is gonna be sick.

I was thinking of how funny it would be to have Dirk stumble upon Singe and Daphne's Bubble jail and see Borf in it wearing her outfit. (tastefully funny of course)  I'd really like to work on some SA stuff. Everything I am building has had animation in mind, and I plan on sharing the video work. Most of it is going on my demo. :)

Here's a newer one. I'm still working on the chin / nose relationship.

Hi Gbowles, and welcome here  :-*

Hey, what an AWESOME (first) post here  :o

Your 3D Dirk model is really great, expect chin/nose relation, but you're still working on it  :)

Are you a professional CG modeler? 'coz your work looks very professional!

Did you also have some skill for 3D animation?

Arghhh... I can't wait to see a 'cross over' 3D pictures between Dragon's Lair & Space Ace worlds  :-*

Thanks for sharing your impressive work with us  :-*

Thank you so much! Coming from you guys it really means alot. Yes I do animation, but as a freelancer. Once this economy turns around, I am seeking a desk. :) I'll have to hit up some of these collectors to furnish said desk with fun things to look at. :)

I was thinking as part of my portfolio I could recreate the final scene of Dragon' Lair completely in 3D. As an aside, I am playing with the idea of re-encoding my version of DL (Daphne) with that scene as a playable level. Now I am not sure what legalities exist with that, but I could offer my scene to others for free and let you do the re-compressing. Again, I would do this with complete respect for the original and consider it paying homage to the work that made me want to be an animator. I would love input on this. My wife is a Wizard of Oz fan and the thought of a remake is a catalyst for hysterics. Peace!

Holy moly!!! That would be astounding. How long in gods name would that take to do?!?!!/

Well the scene runs about 45 seconds to a minute, though I haven't timed it out yet. Of course there would have to be the various death scenes for each move as well, I am guessing about 10 of them. Once created certain scenes would be copied then flipped for reversals. I would use the original audio. I am guessing about 3-4 months as I would be doing it alone. Once I get the models built, I'll have a better idea. With all the great comments so far I am very tempted. I need material on my new demo anyhow.
Title: Update: Singe
Post by: gbowles on February 25, 2009, 08:32:08 PM
Using a video program called Virtualdub, I am able to shuttle around the DL footage and get reference to build to. This has come in really handy.

Title: Singe: Early shadow test
Post by: gbowles on February 25, 2009, 09:00:38 PM
I use a shadow test to check for artifacts in geometry, kinda like rubbing your hand across finished wood to find imperfections. Once the modeling is done, I'll probably move on to textures. I plan on visiting Gatorland (I live in Florida) to get some cool reference on skin / muscles. That is unless someone out there has access to a 40 foot Dragon. Lol. Here's Singe, again. :)

Started on some of the teeth / tongue. The front ones aren't in yet. I just thought of how difficult it's gonna be to create Daphne. Anyone kind enough to donate a centerfold?

Argh... I can't wait to see the characters 'textured'  :o :-* :-* :-*

I presume you've already checked the FAN'S LAIR section (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/fanslair/fanslair.htm)?
J.Junior did some great 3D pictures too, like this *custom* one for example ;)

Yes, very cool! I especially like the textures on the walls and floor. There's a good contrast between it being faithful to the toon side of things, but with realistic lighting dynamics and an interesting background. The actual game footage has a similar balance of cleanly lined / slightly minimalist styled characters and elaborate watercolor backgrounds. Example: the actual dragon's lair, the coin bed floor etc. I like the composition and the posing of the characters, it definitely tells a story. That's hard sometimes. Ask any comic book artist, and the most challenging part is posing your characters in a way that speaks action powerful enough to do it in as few panels as possible. Keep up the good work. Once completed with my work I would like to submit a still for the gallery, if that's okay. :)
