Title: :: Rolling Thunder Roadtrip ::
Post by: Dazza on January 18, 2009, 01:19:11 PM
So I've set the Rolling Thunder world record on Mame. It's time to get serious and take the arcade record   So first step, I need to get access to a machine.... Someone on Jamma+ points out there is one on EBay!

Unfortunately it won't fit in my car so I need access to a van. My brother in law has one, so I call him up and he says he can lend me the van and will come along to help too   It's a small van so we measure it to see if it will fit

Unfortunately the game PCB is faulty so no new world records for a while yet! I'm going to try and fix it myself so it could take a while  :o

I'll get some closer pictures of the machine inside and out when I get a chance :)

Congratulation, now you have your 'Holy Grail'  ;)

Regarding your faulty board,Funkycochise here -as a die hard fan of Rolling Thunder- would maybe have few boards as spare ? Drop him a message, who knows  ;)

Regarding the control panel overlay, the one on your game, the lower part is all black  ??? ...

Yes, I knew about that. As part of the sprucing up the previous owner did he got a reproduction marquee (yep we know ALL about that one) AND CPO. Unfortunately the only reproduction items are based on the american one

As you can see there isn't any of the nice art on the lower part of the CPO  :'( But then again the machine looked like this befopre he replaced it

I'll just have to keep my eye out for a NOS one (not likely) or do myself a vector of the CPO too and a get a proper reproduction done!!!!

I'll definitely message FuckyCochise. Bruno didn't you have a faulty board? Are you keeping it as a spare or would it be up for sale? Any spare parts are useful, the board has lots of custom chips!

Let me introduce into the topic.
In fact, I already own a rthunder pcb that was working.
What happened ? I'm guilty, I decided to wash the pcb and when I had to place the chips back on location, I went wrong
with one of them.
After switching on, a small smoke started to come from one chip with the matching smell  :-\

Here is the chip :

It was covered with a sticker.
it rt1-5.6u in mame rthunder.zip rom set

I have same behaviour as on the pcb with mame if I corrupt the file in the archive (0x00 filled)

So if a good soul out there have a broken pcb or is able to create one of these chip would be great !

That chip is an 82S123 32 x 8 bipolar PROM. As can be seen from this cross reference website:

http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=info&page=PromRef.txt (http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=info&page=PromRef.txt)

I'm not the best person to say where to get a replacment from but a quick search reveals this place sells them (or compatible replacements). They will also program them for you at a fee (I think it's $10):

http://www.hobbyroms.com/proms.html (http://www.hobbyroms.com/proms.html)

I have a programmer, but unfortunately it does not support this chip type. Remember these are a program once only chip, so make sure you definitely have the right ROM when burning it. I posted a thread in Jamma+ and there were a few people on there with programmers that were capable of burning the chip and more than willing to do a burn if supplied with the blank chip.

they have arrived :

Yes arrived, but not at my house yet.
But at the house of the guy able to flash the "rolling thunder" content of it.
For information, purchase done on monday, arrived in France today.
I forgot to mention it comes from canada.

Nice packed, very serious and very fast in my opinion.
Cherry on the cake (for me), the guy out there speaks french (quite important for my 'weak english' fellows)

It's a question of small days now, to make my game board alive again  ;)
can't wait.

dazza, sorry for off topic.

Pierre.

Well, i've got to close the chapter regarding my prom troubles

this morning, in my mailbox (in fact, a week ago)

(http://img1.uplood.fr/mamu/p7tp_p1010813.jpg) (http://www.uplood.fr)

quick, what's inside :

tadam :

(http://img1.uplood.fr/mamu/1o0i_p1010816.jpg) (http://www.uplood.fr)

I take back my rthunder pcb, asleep since all this time :

(http://img1.uplood.fr/mamu/e8zx_p1010825.jpg) (http://www.uplood.fr)

the brunt chip is still on location, time for remplacement :

both chips, side to side :

(http://img1.uplood.fr/mamu/rpmr_p1010828.jpg) (http://www.uplood.fr)

time for replacement on the mother board, this time I take care about the  sens  :

(http://img1.uplood.fr/mamu/01cg_p1010834.jpg) (http://www.uplood.fr)

Fine, but what does it give once powered on :

(http://img1.uplood.fr/mamu/ckp9_p1010835.jpg) (http://www.uplood.fr)
(http://img1.uplood.fr/mamu/4cq3_p1010836.jpg) (http://www.uplood.fr)

Yeah, marvellous, I can at last play again rthunder

Epilogue :

- Despite the prom successful fix, I have now graphics garbage while playing (transparent door, wrong color). I don't know what it's coming from.
if it's game eeprom's faults that are quite ill or if it's worst. To go ahead I would need another board to make eeprom swaps.

- I go ahead also on the sound problem, seems that the amplifier chip isn't well soldered.

- A big thank to midiphilou, without him and his skills, that fix wound't have been possible  :-*

Thank you for reading, and Dazza, again, sorry for off-topic

Thanks Pierre for your update on this... and ... Wooowwww... a really good progress  :o :-* :-* :-*

Too bad for the missing graphics...

I keep that last picture... a good opportunity to have that RT background without any sprites for future 'ArcadeLifeStyle' montages  ;)

Keep your motivation... I'm sure that board will be 100% working one day  :)

sorry for the off topic Dazza  :P :-*

Well thats some cracking progress!  ;D

Your board starts up, mine is as dead as a dodo. I have a lead for a new board(s), just waiting on a confirmation while they are being tested. Hopefully I can get my baby back up and running soon!

Oh yeah, Bruno what is the best material to get my Marquee printed on? Most places seem to do stickers, wheras the original is a type of thin plastic.....
Title: Re: :: Rolling Thunder Roadtrip ::
Post by: funkycochise on February 14, 2009, 06:31:44 PM

One step forward.

Even if it's not exactly the same behavior, if I fill rt1_8.7s file from rthunder.zip with some 0x00
I get the same garbage graphics, just like the pcb.

See those transparent yellow doors.

Now, if I remove the chip from the pcb and boot it up, I don't really get the same behaviour than on mame.
the chip i'm talking about is the one labelled RT1-8, not the one shown by my finger :

PS : same song : Dazza sorry for off-topic

I've good contact with a local printing company. The boss (he works alone in fact ;)) even came into my game room in order to see what I'm looking for, regarding some upcoming projects. He's waiting for a new printing machine. Once he'll have it, I'll see with him the best material to use for our reproduction artworks... so stay tuned  8)

Some progress...

I managed to source a Rolling Thunder PCB with known sound problems. It arrived yesterday and was quite possibly the WORST packing ever for a PCB  . One sheet of bubble wrap that wasn't even wrapped round the board with the sound daughterboard just placed on top to rattle around during transit

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rf1A8J48nYcfdn60zcoB9vBpmHh4Ppkbiu6OrBHED-sOAaCgX_sm5rjSEZL51FGUKE7el4HfY535CsJeAAv8Q-_c_2iklavgZk5gkF3wGIu-j9gxc8LTfj9ccZ-F8aTRRiFvco0umSqT5kNAi2bao-z2f0EIsEXQrumzOc7sokHNZY2do2XKCqxGtE3-fRS9jz8N055DrK1TTC0geCUl99vTfJfDxoQ-vuzzSG9fwl_reit6kAYemfh9V6u7bcV4dZa_EErAdimSEuS1YcUyjPqVmnOsQ2CyxuD-f4fFp_OH-hKgJocvk-65gWn4sF4GXNIHhxWIAFf_DMtrf179PXT0drAwl-2HIU0ylWWFoUJs1veN8LNBQmUq-jiX7lHqWuJlolnyAtst5q2dGTO9KqQzxHEiIagAtAMFJKtcdnFXDf0fcOwnSaVZKnpG9D_rwVAX5RAy5tzyZMmNKeE7iROZm6TuzD_8EOCiY7doV0dgFa5No4WpMz_awhqdOOqOST_RwA46BDbPqKaqCYBJHwbICIq665_EWwiTF6pQqAriBZfNfxDmbZAZ4-LBp8ISzxnRQcaea_Zbe6Otn0YV9SAM9V2Sfj4T_f44_zU=w800-h534-no)

I know the sound is faulty so decide to plug it in without the daughterboard attached. It gets further than my existing faulty board, cycling through the sprites on power up but resetting itself   :?

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/LFyUxrvaUd2xmwwD3-10aplmoiXTTVFexieljATa0y-6FJw19dhVJD_4zsroZ_yNKy0MA9l7cvRKqx0_yv9QZSZLDlvFm8_2T0EW7roveUXcfEqIX6rQBenXqfjsUvA35bGAxP3jI4Bp7xMt9rmcTyyHNANSSJ_DYg80TV0hSGVqEpaFKnAgtrpoTv-V59UwuGUZBf6DtBh-Cy2k_jivDnqFWtV133zLAlF-7mVh0lGtWQwxL6GQIssmcMPgNjPFo-8Pw8R0-2iSeag_EUx5e6_5LmggFXh_o4P0GJMykAL0WRNAwI6iFiXpmvfK4D_Ud3B2bF80CBFthJGDkbfIPFASFiCkdcMttmdIOqQnnvfdrapJxXmnrg8JG_5OlI8wJm8SMVj4t_QilOOYZasH1NRDt0UYFz4BExONv9YbPHP6admo8T6fni5MmHUkOgd9MVMzRBHbqrxs7EIrPWXmHW79f2_hNhtFDWTXnLgO5tNn0hVbtF2TICCnes5EAWKphV7q95358akUC7THrb6MNmg7WoXns9hWtecrX9kMCFUyaWYzFr_444dDCVhwYBVY1PBtQ0pK_berev9FNqS5eINyq0UNtVfRie40-kY=w800-h534-no)

However, I can now successfully get into the self test mode..... Hmmmm. Ok, lets try attaching the daughterboard from my existing faulty board. The sound should work on that one. Here it is all attached

Thought I'd run through it just to see how what the transition to joystick would be like.

Not too bad, I completed it on my first go, scored a measly 350k. I wasn't going for score though, was just running though to see if all the levels were ok, plus the dip switches were set to only allocate 120 seconds which make level 8 a bit of a challenge if you don't start it loaded up with ammo (I did but stupidly died half way through) ...
