Title: Ric-o-chet
Post by: ckong on September 26, 2014, 12:51:53 AM
Remember this one?

This nice machine was (or is) situated at the Belgian Warehouse that was raided by us several times.  ;D  At my first vist (André's second or third) we asked the owner if he would sell this game, but he didn't want to because he was still lending it out for money a few times a year, it earned him part of his pension. That is cool.  8)

However, a few weeks ago chrischris found another one, through a friend of his, and he was asking around some guys for interest in buying it. A few did and I ended up to be the lucky one.  :)

The game was situated nearby Chris' place and this week he took the time and effort to pick it up for me.  :) :)  Thanks, mate.

And here it is:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/small_zps52fa59f0.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/small_zps52fa59f0.jpg.html)

It is dirty, very dirty but it seems to be in good cosmetical condition and according to Chris it is still complete. But the working condition is unknown, it hasn't been turned on (lol) for over 10 years.

I don't know yet if there will go a lot of work into this game, but I hope that this thread ends with some nice pictures of me and friends playing a 4-player game of Pong!  ;D

For now, enjoy the flyer.

Chris, if you have additional pictures and info, be my guest.  :) ;)

Here we go then :)

The game was located somewhere in this big building in Belgium called "Palais des Expositions" (where all the exhibitions take place) in Charleroi.
Unfortunately the seller forgot our first appointment so I had to go home empty handed :/
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/roc/roc0.jpg)

It gave me the opportunity to pass by this roundabout known as the "Marsupilami Roundabout" (it's a Belgian cartoon character). It's also the exact place where I failed miserably the very first time I tried to pass my driving licensed :)

A few days later, I was there again.
This time the seller was there and he told me the machine was located on the back of the "Palais des Expositions" in what used to be the Bowling.
I love that creepy picture :)

Once inside it's even better!
You can see that the bowling lanes have been taken.
It's a model racing club who used them to make circuits for their little toys.
There's also that nice "shit dripping ceiling" which makes the place look like it's eaten by a giant mushroom.

The machine is in the back near the lavatories, sad and alone.

Once the pinball like legs are removed it fits perfectly in my car, but really this is a heavy machine for it's size.

Bye Bye, creepy place!

On the other side of this huge building there's also that picture which I always hated since I was a kid (you can see it from the highway). For a mysterious reason (because they are cut? because they are clowns?), it has always scared me. But now I'm a real man and I stood up next to it and even took a picture.

Especially this guy hiding behind the puzzle:

A bit further, there's an other clown related place...
As a kid we were always passing by this shop before taking the highway.
I always wanted to to there because it was supposed to be THE place where you could buy all kind of magic tricks and accessories to dress up and make jokes (you know from clown noses to  exploding cigarettes, that kind of stuff). The fact that it was weirdly located right before the highway made it a bit mysterious because my parents never took me there… so the place was even more tempting.
Years later when I had a car I went there, and my god, it was very disappointing and tiny and dusty. Some things should definitely be left as fantasies.

But I digress, back home with the game on it's feet and my back half broken.
Why is it always raining when I unload games alone?

The inside.
Except for the power chord it seems complete and "clean".

Here's the price (in Belgian francs) and luckily that's exactly the amount I found inside :)

I also found these 2 nice ladies inside, very sexy 70's.
Blond or Brown?

Nice game I'm glad it's saved and going to a nice home.
The only thing I'm officially asking is to be the first one to have an option if you ever decide to sell it one day. Deal?

Great pics ! So awesome the Marsupilami has a statue there !! I think it's the birthplace of André Franquin right ?

Love the Bowling picture.....creepy indeed :)

Awesome machine. I think I saw a PCB like that at the Belgian warehouse.....now let's pray it works :)

Wow, what a nice find, i like those discrete games. There is a huge possibility that the PCB might work.

I go a similar one (Paddle Battle), it worked without Problems: http://www.wolfgangrobel.de/arcadereps/paddle.htm

The best thing on that PCB ist the futuristic font... ;-)

Oh yes, that reminds me I also have an untested Paddle Battle PCB if this helps fixing the Ric-O-Chet.

I was a big fan of Franquin's work, I even studied a few years to be a cartoonist partially because of that :)
He was born in Brussels actually (etterbeek) but this statue from one of his character was installed temporarily in 88 to celebrate the annual big comic strip festival in Charleroi.
It was removed after the event but as it had become a part of the landscape they put it back forever in 89.

Thanks Ully! If I had a way to rename this topic I'd add "of the century" for sure :)

there's even an abandoned discotheque in there, with round windows placed in a way that you could see the bowling alley...but I wasn't allowed to take pics :/

Allright, the game has been a guest at Chrischris' place for a weeks (thanks Chris) and yesterday it arrived in Hilversum (thanks Sound & Vision for collecting it in Belgium). I picked it up today and brought it home.  :)

And to start of, this particular machine is in superb condition, you really can't tell his age of almost 40 year!  :-*  It was dirty though,

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050950_zps560f10fb.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050950_zps560f10fb.jpg.html)

so I first did a good clean. The following picture is only the dirt after one swipe on the woodden frontpanel!

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050949_zps766677ee.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050949_zps766677ee.jpg.html)

It looks like brown nicotine dirt of years and years of smokers playing the game.

The game has been permitted  in 1978 in Charleroi:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050947_zps3fa4ff5d.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050947_zps3fa4ff5d.jpg.html)

Anyway, after the first round of cleaning, this is the result:

Nice, isn't it?  ;D

Serial number?

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050961_zpsed66991f.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050961_zpsed66991f.jpg.html)

And although I suppose that lots of smokers have been playing the game a long time ago, the only burn spots are on a small part of the T-molding left and right, which is so little that I will not replace it. It is part of the history of the game

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050965_zpsc4984e0e.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050965_zpsc4984e0e.jpg.html)

An inside view of the cab, game board and back of the monitor.

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050968_zps927f9fdb.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050968_zps927f9fdb.jpg.html)

Inside is a regular B&W TV from the seventies, with a woodgrain front panel!  :D :D

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050974_zps43b102af.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050974_zps43b102af.jpg.html)

So, does the game work?  I don't know yet. I first want to clean the game from the outside and inside, then I will check the wiring, voltages and other electronical stuff. And then I will do an attempt to power the game with the board connected.

Expect more pictures of this strange looking (it has pinball legs!  ::) ) yet beautiful machine in the next days.

Some company info: http://www.centuri.net/allied.htm

Yes, they have pretty cool cabs indeed!!
I still have a few Paddle Battle PCB from a retired operator so I guess they were common in Belgium.

Maybe their weak point was their marketing team: naming a cab "hesitation"... really, guys?
Well I might hesitate to pour my money in it too, then  ;)

.... and the baseline of "Robot" is "the robot plays against itself"...
I guess this means they don't need me so I won't disturb them by coining that machine  ;)

you can select 11 or 15 as ending score.

....  So you kinda' got two games from them now ;)

or kinda' four: gyruss, phoenix, pleiads, ric-o-chet.  ;D

I disassembled the CP yesterday and I have never seem so much dirt on it, I don't want to know what it all is, but it is gross!  I will post pictures later.

The game came without the keys so I will drill out the back door lock today and have a closer look at the internals. I am curious about the game board, I did notice a switch on it (11/15 game?).

There was also a small 'delivery note' inside mentioning the address of a bowling alley in Charleroi, I guess that that is the place where chris found the cab, it never had another owner.  :)

I continued cleaning the game today. It involved of course taking the game apart.

I drilled out the lock on the backdoor to get easy access to the internals. First thing I saw was the Motorola Solid state 21" TV:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1050984_zpsacae3ba4.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1050984_zpsacae3ba4.jpg.html)

I took it out and cleaned the outside and inside. Lot of electronics on the inside.

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060031_zpsc7367d1a.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060031_zpsc7367d1a.jpg.html)

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060036_zps6223430a.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060036_zps6223430a.jpg.html)

Then I cleaned the control panel, which was really needed. The result was a 'like new' CP:

Dirty:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060011_zpsbe467ea4.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060011_zpsbe467ea4.jpg.html)

Partial cleaned and disassembled:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060027_zpsd252dab9.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060027_zpsd252dab9.jpg.html)

Clean and assembled again:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060028_zps9660ba03.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060028_zps9660ba03.jpg.html)

I will disassemble and clean the controls tomorrow.

Then I disassembled the frontpanel with the marquee and I cleaned all parts of it:

To answer André's question about the 11 or 15 points, you can seth the game to both wins. Notice the black sticker on the back of the marquee, the frontside of the marquee shows on that spot the number 15 in a small window. The other half of the sticker has 11 written on it. Here is the switch on the pcb:

This is strange, the pcb seems to be a paddle battle pcb, a 2-player pong clone from 1973. But it is inside this ric-o-chet cab from 1975!!  ???  And ric-o-chet is a 4-player game! The wiring in the cab is also for 4 players. Can anyone explain this?

The main isolation transformer has only connections on one side, I always thought that isolation transformers have connections on the incoming and on the outgoung side. Obviously not.

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060025_zps4edcd568.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060025_zps4edcd568.jpg.html)

I guess incoming is 230V, see the unconnected plug, on which once probably the power cord was connected. Am I correct? This power cord is not present in the cab. 'Outgoing is 115V, which goed to the other board with all the little isolation transformers, for 115V, 6V and 24V. The TV runs on 115V AC.

At the end of the day the cab is pretty naked:

I will dress her up tomorrow, after cleaning the control pots.

Yes I agree with Ully (Woohoo!).

Strange thing about the board.....but maybe they exchanged the EPROMS with an upgraded software version and exchanged the processor for a faster one ?

 ;D

By the way I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE that TV !!!!! sooooo American with the rotary dials :)

One part that remained to be cleaned is the control assemblies.

This is how the CP looks on the bottom side, after removing the two protective metal plates:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060046_zps46db3494.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060046_zps46db3494.jpg.html)

Cleaning of the controls in progress.

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060049_zpsa012ae41.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060049_zpsa012ae41.jpg.html)

And clean, at least the left one. I just used some car scratch remover. There are still some little spots on it on the photo, but I got rid of them later on. In the meanwhile all four of them are clean and shining in my face.  ;D

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060052_zpsdb3e2499.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060052_zpsdb3e2499.jpg.html)

OK, time to test some elctronics before my first attempt to power the game. I disconnected the TV, the controls, the coin door and marquee electronics and the game board. Then I made a new power mains cable and:

1. check fuses on continuity > check, all fuses are OK  :)
2. check incoming and outgoing voltage of the main power supply. > check, incoming 220V, outgoing (to the other trafo's) 112V  :)
3. check the voltage on the TV power cable. > check, measuring 115V  :)
4. check the coin door and marquee electronics for 6V > check, after connecting the marque and coin door electronics I was greeted by  4 bright lights (after replacing the old bulbs for new ones)  :) :)

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060054_zps250e520e.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060054_zps250e520e.jpg.html)

5. Connect the TV power cable, take a deep breath and put the mains in the wall socket. > Yes, neck glow is visible  ;D ;D

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060055_zps62ce611b.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060055_zps62ce611b.jpg.html)

6. check the front of the TV for life. > Yes, it is alive.  ;D

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060056_zps070ba38a.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060056_zps070ba38a.jpg.html)

7. Connect the game board, take another deep breath and check what is happening. > Barchem, we have an image, however, not that good:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060060_zps9560cb6c.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060060_zps9560cb6c.jpg.html)

Where are we now? Well, after fiddling a bit with the horizontal hold, this is the result at the moment:

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Ric-o-chet/P1060062_zps0ad3efd6.jpg) (http://s50.photobucket.com/user/ckong65/media/Ric-o-chet/P1060062_zps0ad3efd6.jpg.html)

video: http://youtu.be/60wnyOZHO8g (http://youtu.be/60wnyOZHO8g)  (the camera had trouble to focus)

It seems that the game board is working (at least partial) and that it is indeed Ric-o-chet, not paddle battle (because of the present horizontal lines on top and bottom of the game screen). The game doesn't credit, but that could be a wiring issue or something little like that, will check it later.

The TV gives a very bright image, but also very unstable. That doesn't wonder me, the TV is almost 40 years old. I will check the other pots on the chassis later this week, to see if it gets better. If not, then I will need a lot of technical input from you guys.  :D Or maybe replacing it by another B&W TV is the easiest option, yet very undesirable.

Will be continued.

Hopefully there arent too much "weird" caps in there. There might be bipolair one's in there so you'll have to be extra carefull with your investigations :)

Anyway, you're already further than a completely dead machine which is awesome.
It's also awesome that the machine was picked up from the original location that it has been in from about 40 years ago.....that is just very very rare to happen !

Great news, there's life in this machine :)
FYI, if it helps somehow, here are pictures of my 2 Paddle Battle PCBs.

If I hear "Kayleigh" one more time I'm going to:(http://smileyshack.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/svomit_100-122.gif?w=49&h=33)

It's not a bad song, it's just been overplayed, like so many great songs.

Funny thing: I actually saw Fish (is that his name) perform BEFORE the best band in the world at some festival in the south of Holland many years ago.

Yeah I know about that. It's the same with Level (although they had a lot more hits). I can't stand Running In The Family. It's one of their weakest songs IMHO, yet you still hear it "all the time".

Oh yeah....back on topic, sorry Erik !

Yes,  very easy,  just lift it out,  it is not bolted to the wood.  I will bring it with me if I haven't solved the issue by myself then (yeah,  right)   :D

Congratulations Erik for your cab.
Today, I've a look at "Hesitation" cab from Allied, maybe you can help me in that cab, which seems to be 2 years older that yours.

Hey look, Ric-o-chet became mobile!

Useful, these pinball movers  ;D

I'm considering what to do with this game. The monitor (TV) has some serious issues and the game doesn't credit. It might also have other technical issues. But the cab still is in superb condition.

The guts of the game:
