Title: :: Ms. Pac Man - Diary of a Renovation ::
Post by: DarthNuno on January 01, 2009, 11:42:33 AM
Following this road trip...

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/mspacman.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=556.0)

It's time to give a second life to this Ms. Pac Man cabinet  :-*

As you can see, I've got all the parts I need, except the electronic parts :

This renovation should not be difficult, but it'll require some work...

OK, so let's check the cab' itself.

Its identity ?

Yeah... it's a real Ms. Pac Man  :-*

Serial number is 36600.

The left side will require some repair on the top and few other places... (bondo)

The right side is in better condition :

Both side will require some painting restoration.

The front is fine, but it'll need painting correction too...

OK, now this is the funny part  ;) I need the *exact* paint in order to touch up the sides.
Because this cab is empty, it's the perfect time to...

...bring it up to my usual paint shop, in order to scan the colors used on the Ms. Pac Man cabinet  ;D

Look the kids on the right of the picture  ;D ;D ;D Attracted by the cab  ::) :P  ;D

Ok... show time !  :pac:

At the entrance of the shop, I'll looking for a security guard, or someone from the shop... in order to explain him that it's just an other 'ArcadeLifeStlye' action I'm planning to do blablabla...

No one  ??? Ok, so let's go directly to the Mixing colors machine  ;D

The employee recognize me  :D I use to come here for scanning the colors of small parts, but this is the first time I'm coming with a full size cab' of course  :) He's very amused... and recognize the 'thing'  ;D

Here's the colors scanner :

There are 4 colors used on a Ms. Pac Man : Yellow, Blue, Pink and Black. I'll scan them all, except the black.

Done  ;) Time to go home ... but let's do some other 'ArcadeLifeStyle' pictures  ;D

A lot of costumers are very amused by this... some of them recognize the game... I hear a lot of 'wakka wakka' around me  ;D

Now the best part  ;D At the cash desk ...

The cashier, a young girl, see the cabinet. I'm saying "I guess the bar code is somewhere on the back"  ;D

..and she's now looking for the code bar  ;D ;D ;D

After 1 minute, she says : "... I don't find its bar code  ??? I've never seen such item before in that shop... and mister... it looks already used ... why did you buy this ?..."

I say : "Yeah, I know... but this is the last one on that shop... I'm ok to buy it like that... Oh, and I'm sure there is a bar code somewhere, please check again  ;D..."

...and once again, she's turning around the cabinet in order to find the bar code / price of the cabinet  ;D ;D ;D It was amazing !!! Jesus Christ, too bad I didn't film that scene  ;D ;D ;D

One minute later... she saw me laughing like a madman ... and I finally explain her what that 'thing' is  ;) She was finally very amused too  ;)

Ok, time to go back at home  8) But a last 'Western Style' picture  :P

This cab will go in the ...hum hum ... workshop, located in the first floor in my house  ::) :P

And this is it... I got the right colors for this Ms. Pac Man  ;)

OK, I think I deserve three 'Space Ace' for that , don't ya think ?  ;D ;D ;D

I'll try to catch the real board, but I know it'll be very difficult  :-\ Ms Pac Man is a very expensive board... mostly only available in US ... high shipping cost + incoming taxes  :ghost: I already spent a fortune on other boards and I'm tired to spend so much money for finally have non working games  :ghost:

Smell like advmame regular setup, Am I wrong ?  (http://www.gamoover.net/Forums/Smileys/guntar/wink.gif)
In my point of view, it's the setup I like the most.
Once mastered, advmame is really a must.

Nice event as you told me last week...
Incredible with pictures (http://www.gamoover.net/Forums/Smileys/guntar/azn.gif)

Keep it up Bruno, if you need such an advice...

I thought about doing it too. I need the code for Galaxian blue....could that maybe the same as Ms.Pac blue ?

Great pics, yeah those kids at the car-park look very interested at the game, and you my friend look to be interested in their mama :D (which I can understand totally, although I need more detailed pictures just to be sure  ;D ;D ;D).

It would be nice if there were portable color scanners that you could take home and back to the store....

That is really funny. I can't believe you took the entire cabinet to the store!
I'm really looking forward to your restoration. Last year I took apart my Ms Pac and never finished the restoration.
Good luck!

For this renovation, I won't use a computer with the classic  *Arcade Perfect When It's Well Tuned (tm)* Setup : Dos/AdvMame/RGB.  8)

It's so hard to find a Ms Pac Man working here in Europe...and working for more then few hours without spending $$$ + $$$ SO what ?

Well ... there is an other solution ...and NAMCO approved  ;D

I've got this flyer since a while...

...but now, I've got the also the board  ;D

Yes, this board plays Ms.Pac Man... in its original way... and it's made by the creator... NAMCO

This board will be 1000x more reliable than the original one... and I'm comfortable with this ... this is NAMCO made  :-* :-* :-*

Look at the size of the board... All in my hand... like the Holy Graal  ;D

Namco loves details  :-* On the other side of the board, a galaga ship  :-*

I can't wait to end of the renovation of the Ms. PacMan cabinet, I've to try this board!
Easy, it's a jamma board, so let's plug it in my PacMan cab, jamma too and currently playing the Namco Classic Collection Volume 2, features Pac Man of course  ;)

Power on  :P

GREAT... I Love it  :-*

Here's what happens when you press start button (It's currently set on Free Play)

Of course, Galaga won't be playable because It'll be a Ms Pac Man panel...

No, I only need MS PAC MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN  :pac:  :ghost:  :ghost:  :ghost:  :ghost:

Ready!

Ok, let's remove this board... and start to work on the cabinet  ::) :P  ;D

I got it from ebay US.

The average price for such board is between $200 and $300. Quite expensive  :ghost: ...but let's hope reliable for many years to come  :P

There is one for sale right here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Namco-20-year-Reunion-PCB-red-board-GALAGA-MS-PACMAN_W0QQitemZ110341280351QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item110341280351&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318).

May I ask why you didn't just order a "bullet-proofed" (refurbished) original Ms. Pac-man PCB off US eBay? It would've had the original intro screen with the 1980 Midway Mfg. logo AND it would've been half the price you paid. Also, since you're not using the Galaga game, you paid a premium for it needlessly. You also could've purchased to Pac to Jamma adapter.

Hi WunderCade, and welcome here  :-*

Well, in short... I've already spent a lot of $$$ in some previous projects for 'working/refurbished' old boards (Battlezone, Galaga, Galaxian...) ... and I really had no luck  : most of them were nonworking, or had a lot of problems  :-\
Most of original 'classic' boards cannot be founded here in Europe... So, I've to get them from US... labeled 'working board' has a price (check the price for a working MS Pac Man board)  :-X Add shipping cost to Belgium ... add incoming taxes + extra shipping cost... and you have a big amount of €  :-[
I'll be more comfortable with this 'Class of 81' Reunion board'... because I'm almost sure it won't break soon (but who knows ?)  8)
But when the renovation will be done, I could give a chance to a vintage Ms. Pac Man board + a jamma adapter of course, but the priority for me now is : start & finish the cabinet renovation  :)

BY the way, do you know where I can found a "bullet-proofed" Ms PacMan board, off ebay of course ?

If you want a guaranteed, bullet-proof board, then Peter Hingston in the US is the man to contact.

Here you go:

Here is his website. (http://home.comcast.net/~amyhood/pacman_ms_pac-man_pcb_arcade_repair.html)

I have bought from him and he stands by his work...and no, I am NOT Peter Hingston...lol

Why not a 48 in 1 Bruno ?  Much cheaper, plays the original game code and not the "almost but not quite the same" on that Namco board, which is still emulation too.

Seriously, you had a couple of bad experiences with boards. Either I've been very lucky or you have been very unlucky, since my boards run 100% reliable. Galaxian, Mario Bros, Missile Command, Centipede (true, after 3 parts repaired) SW (OK, in all honesty I've had to replace 2 VG-Rams on that, but it's SO easy)....

I hope one day you realise that no restoration is truly complete without the original board in it.
I understand why you do it though, and there ARE good alternatives (like Jrok's multi-williams which is NOT emulation).

And I say this with a ton of respect for all the fabulous work you do on all your cabinets, please let that be clear !!!!!
 :) :)
But you know......emulation.....it's nice and stuff, but in the end it feels like sex with a condom.........

Héhé... that cabinet is now in the official 'repair room' somewhere in my game rooms  8) ...not in the family house anymore. So, in both ways, the Ms is happy  ;D
Title: Re: :: Ms. Pac Man - Diary of a Renovation ::
Post by: DarthNuno on May 28, 2014, 09:44:59 PM
Ops... didn't updated that topic since a loong time...(thx WunderCade for the reminder  ;)).

What I've done recently :

- installed the board 'Namco Reunion' / jamma wiring
- replaced the original marquee completely sun faded
- installed 20" TV / RGB scart to jamma adapter
- installed temporary plexiglas (unfortunately scratched)
- completely restored the grill speaker (rusted to the bones)
- installed spare speaker + amp board

... and ... and ... that's it!

I always wanted for that specific cabinet to start the painting job first... but time goes & goes... months years passes.. and I finally realized that it's most important for me/the visitors to have this game playable first.
In addition, do you honestly think that cabinet need a 'strong' restoration firdt? I don't think so... check this out

Next steps in the right order :

- clean the cabinet (yep... still not done... you can spot the shits of pigeons  :D)
- restore the coin door/frame (rust!)
- replace the scratched bezel
- ...and finally touch up the cabinet with 'accurate' paint  ;)

...but while this time, that Ms Pac Man is now 'enjoyable' inside the Nuno's Lair!  :)  :pac:  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:
