Title: Took out my old favorite Toy from the past: LEGO !
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on April 09, 2014, 11:35:30 AM
Long time ago, i picked up the box of Lego i had from my childhood at my mother.

After 30 years it was a nice experience to put some of the projects together with my son.

I clearly remember when i was on holiday with my parents in Germany, that i saw a Trainset when i was in some city walking by the shop windows.

I remember that i saw that train, and loved it.

My dad who passed away when i was 14, bought the set there in the summer, did not tell me that ofcourse and kept it untill my 7th birthday in September.

Now that made this trainset special for me.

Now my son is about the age when i saw the trainset in the shopwindow, and i thought it was nice to search all the pieces together after such a long time.

Its nice to see that he enjoys it as much as i did 32 years ago  :D

I was surprised that it still worked, because i have mistread that engine for alot of other Lego projects back in the day. (hey, they dont call me MacGyver for nothing uh !  ;D )

Its almost undestructable, it runs just fine !

It was missing the battery wagon, but i found that on marktplaats for cheap. (its a blue one instead of a red  :-\ but ok)

This is the set:

here a video of the train :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guncfqYXFPE

Later that week, i sorted all the other track parts that where still around, and was able to make a much bigger track  ;D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvhavUPVT-w

As you can see in the second video, the "181" stickers are on the train.
I could not find anything suitable to just print, so i vectored the label  :P

Its available here :

Lego-181-Sticker.pdf (http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/Lego181Sticker.pdf)

Now i just need to repro the "International Transport" label.

later i started with the technic series, which really educated me on technics in general at a young age.

I love Lego's !

Cool,
I had this one:
together with this one:

Although I really like the old lego's, I let my kids mess with it. It is really lacking the usability of modern bricks. They are either too loose or way too tight, the plastic breaks much easier, and the blue and white bricks have a lot of discolouration.
So I treated myself with a bunch of modern LEGO sets, like these 2 top 5 ever sets:

I am not really into the new lego, but thats maybe just because i dont have any

I am from this era :

Here i am building those after 25 years  ;D

Those sets really teached me how engines/gearboxes/differentials and pneumatics/hydraulics etc. etc. etc. work !

I have the same excavator! Still the best looking LEGO excavator today.
Unfortunately, as a kid you HAD TO put water in the pneumatic pumps. Now they are pretty rotten.
So I exchanged the old for the new cylinders of the Unimog, and now it works better than ever.

...but back in the day, I collected the Legoland "space" serie... and this was my biggest (and favorite) one  :-*

...and in that era, there was NO star wars or other 'licenses' series... you had to imagine, experiment and create everything by yourself... that's the power of the lego! Be creative! I hope my daughter will catch the virus too  :)

Back on topic, that Super Star Destroyer rocks in arcade surrounding. ;)

Cool! My kids are quite into Lego at the moment.

So I popped round my parents house and up in the loft managed to find my first Technic sets which I promptly put together:

Set 855, Mobile Crane:
(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu19/drevans112/EBay/Lego%20855%20-%20Mobile%20Crane/2-Extendedwithsupportsout.jpg) (http://s629.photobucket.com/user/drevans112/media/EBay/Lego%20855%20-%20Mobile%20Crane/2-Extendedwithsupportsout.jpg.html)

Set 857, Motorcycle:
(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu19/drevans112/EBay/Lego%20-%20857%20Motorcycle/857-SideAngle.jpg) (http://s629.photobucket.com/user/drevans112/media/EBay/Lego%20-%20857%20Motorcycle/857-SideAngle.jpg.html)

Set 8660, Car Chassis:
(http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu19/drevans112/EBay/Lego%20-%208860%20Car%20Chassis/1-Back-SideAngle.jpg) (http://s629.photobucket.com/user/drevans112/media/EBay/Lego%20-%208860%20Car%20Chassis/1-Back-SideAngle.jpg.html)

I was also bought a couple of newer sets by my wife recently and she also got me the LEGO Technic Unimog U400 - 8110 (as shown above) and the Excavator (8043):

Lego is such a cool toy and invention!

It's strange but I wasn't that much into Lego BITD.
I never had much more than the regular building blocks and well....I wasn't that creative at all with them....

I had HO trains and stuff, thought the LEGO trains were insanely expensive.

I also had more Playmobil.

My son is (or I guess I already should say, was) heavily into LEGO esp. SW stuff and technical stuff.

We played with Mindstorm at Legoland Germany couple of summers ago, had to program the robot to do some stuff. Lots of fun to do and very good to learn about programming. We were the first to finish and I didn't help a lot :)

I had a second hand HO trainset BITD, i dont know what happened to it, its not at my mothers place and its also not here

i do remember that i had 2 transformers, one of them i Always used for the Lego engine as shown in the video, i did that because it was variable and 2 ways  ::)

this is it :

i needed to look out that i did not set it to full throttle, because the motor was just 4,5 volts, so now you guys also understand what i ment when i said that i mistreaded that engine  ;D ;D

Damn, now i miss my HO set even more !

Yeah man, I had Hema trains too. This was actually Lima, a very cheap brand and nothing compared to Märklin or Fleischmann....but budget was different then...

I had this transformer, actually I do still have everything  :)

Proudly made in Hengelo, The Netherlands !

Temsi was an interesting company in regards to this thread. It made a "bootleg" of Meccano for years:

I remember that, i had a set of that together with a friend of mine.

we won that set with the collecting Christmas trees after Christmas for the burning of them
every year they did a kind of lotto, for every tree you brought, you get a ticket, and later they draw a few out of the bin and they gave away some prizes, one year we won that Darda set.

Man that brings back memories !

Anyway, i found a LIMA transformer in my search for the transformer pic, and was already wondering if Hema just branded it  ;D

The other transformer i had was this :

Only the one i had was blue, i did a query for LIMA transformer, so i guess this is also a LIMA

Dont know if its cheaper or better, i only remember that i had two transformers, and two color tracks, silver and bronze color

did look strange mixed, but BITD i didnt care, we took whatever we could get our hands on  ;D

nice pics! I remember seeing most of these Lego pics you posted in the catalogs I used to pick up at the local Bruna.

and if you got a present for your birthday always shake the wrapped box first, to make sure it was Lego. I think it's nice to see the Lego company is doing so well right now (maybe too well) with their more modern commercial stuff. That Star Wars stuff is just crazy.

Funny you say that, i used to "read" those catalogs too.

My mother told me that when i was young i enjoyed "reading" the instruction manuals as much as the building. ;D

The Lego astronaut with the helmet is in the LEGO movie. Including the infamous crack at the bottom! How many helmets had that crack in your box of Lego's? Guess 50% at least in my box of minifigs.

Drool. I tried to find one for a reasonable prize. To no avail. Now I try to buy the missing bricks at bricklink. Almost finished with that.
Still not sure what to think about the 8043. The remote control kicks ass, but the scoops and the linear actuators kind of make it hit and miss. They had to figure out remote controlled pneumatics with double-length cylinders! So IMO it's in the shadow of the Unimog, my king of the Technic hill, others say the 8043 is the best ever. It just does not look right, wrong colour (yellow) and again.... that fugly scoop.... I miss the quality scoops from the past. Same with the new 42009 crane... That one is not right either. Give me the first telescope crane you showed.

meh, its cool that they cram in alot of technology, only i preffer the old square "8 bit" look of them

i totally don't like the look of the rounded beams and stuff

but thats probably also more a nostalgic thing i guess  :D

I enjoyed putting the 8043 excavator together more than the Unimog and enjoy messing about with it more. Funnily enough I prefer the linear actuators rather than the pneumatics. With the pneumatics everything is too jerky, the crane drops way to fast unless you get the controls perfect which requires totally small precise movements of the controls. When my kids have a play with it there is no chance of that happening :)

The other thing with the Unimog is they went to all the trouble of getting the tranmission and engine pistons working when you push it along but no remote control to move it around like with the 8043.

It just does not look right, wrong colour (yellow) and again.... that fugly scoop.... I miss the quality scoops from the past. Same with the new 42009 crane... That one is not right either. Give me the first telescope crane you showed.

haha, I put together all my old technic sets with my son, photographed them and then sold them on EBay. 1 fella bought the lot, got over £160 for those 3 sets :)

Did you get the remake? Just got it in the mail. Looks fab. I never had the big set (LL928), but the medium space ship, the LL924. Lego did not forget us! They have a 924 rebuild instruction online! Some even like it better than the default model.
