Title: Donkey Kong Jr. - "Help Save Papa!"
Post by: DarthNuno on October 16, 2013, 08:16:15 PM
Following this import cabinets/container story...

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/Nintendo_jr_jr.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=4871.0)

...it's now the time to examine one of my latest cabinets arrived in the Lair.  8) So first, its identity  :pac:

...so yeah, it's a natural born Donkey Kong Junior!  :-*

Let's check now inside...

Very clean, cool!

A beautiful Nintendo original board... miammiam  :-*

Ok, it looks good so far, but ...does it play good? POWER ON!

Plays/sounds well... but a display problem!

Impossible to have a correct image... this monitor would be perfect for a TRON game! All the colors are fading into blue.

...and so whatever the potentiometers position  :-X. And yes, I've also tried the one on the high voltage!

I don't think it a 'serious' component failure, because the monitor can display the three basic colors if I put the contrast to the max, but in that case, the background is no more black, I can see the raster line displayed... SO! Unplayable as is...

Sooo... let's give a chance to the magical 'cap kit' intervention, almost mandatory before answering anything related to a monitor failure  ;D

I've already done this operation for the same monitor model, for my Popeye renovation (see here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2157.0)), and I know it's an easy monitor to work with...

Ready to go!

Before :

After :

Who's guilty here?  ::)  :arrow:

Always an intense moment... when you have to plug back the monitor after a such surgery... 8)

Power on, and few potentiometers turned lat8er... problem solved... and welcome crisp picture *as a bonus*  :-* :-* :-*

Dawn, I love this Sanyo monitor model!  :)

Now THAT is a satisfying job done  :spaceace:

I do have a bit of worries about the cap brands in that kit.....looks like cheap Chinese one's, but judging from your picture they do their job  ;D

I always feel Jr. Is so much in the shadow of DK, but it is such a brilliant game !!! Playing it takes me back to that movie theater in Rotterdam where I especially went to play that only game they had standing there. Later they changed it for Burger Time, but I forgave them quickly ;););)

Great addition !!!

Love to hear stories about how we meet our games back in the days!  :)

For me and DK Jr, it's not an 'arcade story' at all to be honest... I discovered DKjr on my CBS Colecovison. I didn't know at the time that the portage of that game was so good! I eventually played the arcade game version...and ...hell yeah... very close to what I played on my CBS!
What a great game... wonderful game play, so 'Game & Watch' design style... so cute ... so Nintendo!  :-*

Well don't worry, for us Europeans it was probably very impossible to have played ALL the classics BITD....

I think I "remember" more games from their home ports than form the original arcade game ! That's how I knew I loved Berzerk f.i. the Atari 800 port is simply almost 100%

I think the machine at that movie theater was probably a generic cab and they replaced the (bootleg) PCB at one time....such is how things was here ;)

Does your board feature the "infinite lives" bug ?

Does your board feature the "infinite lives" bug ?

I didn't know about this. Just googled it

DONKEY KONG JUNIOR

· 2 versions exist!  The Japanese version is titled Donkey Kong Jr. and allows up to 12 characters on the high score table; the U.S. version is called Donkey Kong Junior and only allows up to 3 characters on the high score table.

· Slow down trick - On the 1st screen go to the 2 upper right vines.  With a hand on each, keep pushing UP and the “action” will slow down.

· Infinite lives - In a 2-player game, player 2 must do this trick every turn to give both players an extra life.  On the 1st screen, player 2 goes to the edge of the platform (where you start), as far as possible without falling.  Wait until a blue Snapjaw comes down the vine, and jump at him, hitting him the same time he hits the water.

· BUG: As with Donkey Kong, there is a kill screen with this game as well. (original source (http://www.digitpress.com/eastereggs/arcadedonkeykongjr.htm)).

My board is an US one. Gonna have to try it, but... basically just wanna score with a regular way to play it!  ;)

Capkits are not too dificult if you have some solder experience

I did the Sanyo in the DK from gyruss, so if you doubt, and want to make a trip to Breda, we can do it together  ;)

Or just follow John's video:

Regarding the marquee lightening... like my Nintendo Popeye cabinet... no more light  :-\

Not sure to easily found a 110W tube, or even a 110V starter... so what to do here?  ::)
My cabinet is fully 110W powered from the source, so even I cannot get 220V and installing a brand new support+chassis+tube 220V in local stores  :-\
Any wise suggestion? Or good link to order 110V stuff?

My friend, you can buy them around the corner for sure !!! Just by the type that is meant for units where two tubes are used in series...

Philips S2 is the one to choose (or a similar model from a different brand):

http://www.retaillampen.nl/philips-s2-starter-4-22w-ser

Do NOT use Philips S10, those are for 230V on ONE tube.

You should be able to get these type at the local DIY store for sure.

One small extra information: Nintendo cabs use 100V, NOT 110VAC. Do NOT power the monitors with 110VAC !!!!

The TL lighting is powered with 100VAC too. (100VAC is the mains voltage in Japan). I don't think the 10 VAC difference will matter for the starter. However, the real problem is finding the right tube AFAIR.

For the tubes themselves voltage doesn't matter, there are no 110 or 220V tubes.

Got the famous "SMD LED T5 Tube Fixture Under Cabinet Lamp Bed Night Light US Plug 110V/120V"

Wow! I'm sure that thing has been built for arcade cabinet!  :-*

Powerful enough? Hell yeah!

Easy to install, cheap as chips, perfect result... what else?  8)

Now that the marquee is lighted, I can spot some small damage in ... but I'm fine with that, it's an original one so!

In fact I own the very special "Donkey Kong Jr Red Anger" marquee edition!  ;D
Seriously, any theory regarding the mismatch in the marquee colors? huh?
