Title: [From the Love boat/container] : Kung Fu Master! Da Road Trip...
Post by: DarthNuno on April 05, 2013, 06:39:41 PM
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/loveboat.jpg)

This story has started in the middle of 2012, when "Love" decided to organize the import of cabinets from USA! Despite the complexity of the task (see the full organization topic here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3726.0), a whole story by itself), well... HE DID IT!
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)
Thanks to him, many members here have now some of their dream cabinets!  ;)

So here's my (small) part of the story.

Sunday 31th of March, 8h00am

Well, this start by a good bye! I've decided to sell my beautiful Moon Patrol. The last opportunity for me to take few last pictures...

...a little bit sad, MP is a great one in any dedicated collection, but I know it'll be in a good home & really be enjoyed! ;)

Loaded! Let's warm up the car...

...while I prepare myself for this road trip to come!  8)

It's time go.

The container with all our games has arrived a couple of weeks ago in Bremerhaven (Germany), so I was supposed to drive this to pickup my cabinet!

But Tyrem, who lives in Trier, proposed me & ChrisChris to bring back our cabinets, and save us from an other hell of road trip... yeeess!!  :-*

 :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

So today, it's gonna be a short one for me  ;D

Rock'n'roll...Starting for Belgium...

...let's cross a second country : Luxembourg  :)

Funny... it's the road I take every day yo go to my job...

Except this time, I got a little bit further...arriving close to the German border...

The King Of Burger! Hell yeah... since more than 1 year, the Luxembourg counts its first BK restaurant! I go there from time to time with colleagues for our 'Whopper' shoot!  :P ;D

Few meters further, let's cross a third country : Germany!  ;D

Arriving at the final destination, the city of Trier...

...and here we are. Tyrem owns a video game shop, who cool is that!  :-*
As you can see, the name 'video game shop' really deserves its name more than never, with all these cabinets... ;D

I recognize the shape!

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)

An army of Kung Fu Master?

Nope, only two here! Here's mine...

The second one here is for ChrisChris, but we imported three of them! Not too bad, huh? (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)

Ok, before load the KFM, let's unload the MP...

I'm a little bit sad to sell it to be honest...ok, a last picture when she's still mine  :-\

Too late, now property of Tyrem!  :D

Yeah! This is exactly the best location for an arcade game : in a public location  :-*

I hope Tyrem will let that cabinet as long as possible in his shop, this beautiful MP is a so good eyes catcher!  8)

Ok, it's time to load my Kung Fu Master... one of the last games who were still in my 'must have games' list!

Cool... Tyrem is doing all the job...even moving the game for me! I love road trip like that!  ;D

Well, on the negative side of this story, the condition is badder than expected...

...mostly because some water damages on the base of the cabinet, but also a small accident during the transport.  :-\

Bah, this will give me more work than expected, but should be fine at the end!

A last 'cabinet on the public street' picture...

Now loaded!

Bye Bye Trier... 'till the next time ... this town is 'around the corner' for me  :)

Hey guys, there is a dedicated Kung Fu Master in my car...hell yeaaaaahhhhhh!  8)

....and now there is at least one KFM in Belgium!  :-* Or, at least two with the ChrisChris one!  8)

   Trip : Belgium > Luxembourg > Germany > Luxembourg > Belgium
   Total length : 2h35min - 175  km on road

Thanks again to 'Love' who make this 'container' story possible, to 'Tyrem' for bringing back this cabinet for me and to all the helpers on this story!

I'll be definitively 'in' for the next container  ;)

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum3/thomas.png)

WOW nice story!! Thanks for sharing! You both live very close to me.. I'm located in Saarbrücken. Nice to know that there is a good video game shop in Trier. Shops like these are rare these days. I don't like Gamestop and the likes. I have been there at the Porta Nigra not that long ago, but haven't noticed the shop. Dammit!
Tyrem: I need to visit you and your shop to do some shopping (and maybe play some Moon Patrol :))!

@Bruno: Good luck with the repair of your KFM! Does this thing work? I've never seen the Arcade version, but I loved it on my Gameboy! :D

Btw.: Love the topic of this thread :)

NIce one !

I actually did play it in my town, only like all others back in the day, on a Royal video cabinet with probably a boot inside  :D

And ofcourse on my C64...

the C64 port was actually not too bad :

Great team spirit story again, congrats for the nice catch. :spaceace:
I never played the arcade version, but spent loooooong hours killing the enemies with the low kick on my good old C64, the music is aslo great. :D

Does this thing work?
Here's the seller description...very short : "no monitor, play blind". So I hope the board is still working...

Regarding the computer versions, I had the game on my Amstrad (Schneider) CPC 464, and it was cool at the time, but I've to admit it's not as good as the C64 version.
Funny fact : for technical constraint (or just maybe the coders were too lazy), the Amstrad port uses an elevator to bring 'Thomas' (coincidence?! LOL) in the upper levels, where the original arcade version, but also the C64 port, uses stairs!  :P

I never heard of Kung-Fu Master until I saw the machines @ the storage !  ;D ;D

Maybe because of my general dislike of fighting games ? No that can't be it....I really liked Karateka and IK+ and even Chop Suey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrIt04oydyY) on the Atari 8 bit computers....I just never was much into throwing a guilder into a fighter arcade machine....

Also, there was no version for the A8's of this game. There _was_ a 1987 (can you believe it, I was playing games on my Atari ST at that time) release version done by Activision though.

Since it was 1987 and since it was Activision, it actually looks like an amazingly good port for the 2600:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNe_JJyyMkA

All in all....great story and pics Bruno. I really like Moon Patrol cab, but I do understand that it is one of the games you chose to not keep....somehow it just seems it didn't age very well compared to some other classics. I played a LOT of MP on the A8 and really loved it BITD but it's not a game I fire up too often anymore and if I do somehow I don't play very long...

Great thread... and I am very happy that I got the chance to buy Moon Patrol from Bruno. It is such a beauty. Right now I am sitting in my shop looking at it... and the Porta Nigra right behind it. Amazing, never thougth I would get the chance to own one.

I will put the save kit in the machine as soon as it arrives. I think this adds some replay value to the game although I love it just the way it is.

And by the way... Bruno is a great guy. Was a bit sorry that you did not make it to Trier on Friday to team up with superully and chrischris... but I know you will come again for the burgers, right? ;)

Unloading the beast...

...and close inspection... ouch!

Never tighten up a strap against an edge without a protection between the edge and the cabinet, or you will damage the cabinet like this :-\

General view from the left :

Now, the front of the cabinet... unexpected damage too... holes!

...and water damages on the base...

Regarding the holes & the water damages on the base, it's my fault... the seller (on craiglist) only provided pictures of the upper half of the cabinet/very bad quality pictures, and so I didn't see these damages. I wanted a quick deal, so I didn't asked more and agree the sale. My fault!  :-X

Now the right side :

The back :

Let's check what's left inside...

Board is present... and supposed to be working (play 'blind' according the seller)...hope I'll be lucky regarding the board!

Well, once again, a little bit sad for the unexpected damages -which means more working time on this project-, but at the end,  really happy to have at last one the the last games in my 'must have list'  :)

Now, let's start its restoration!  8)

if it does not work, you can always go for a (temporary) mame solution like you did on other cabinets.

as for the monitor, i guess you got still some tv's on stock ?  ;D

I have a Kungfu Master bootleg board, it's not tested yet but it can be a plan B for you if it works and yours doesn't

It seems like the cab was stored in a real wet place, it is not a suprise, that the wooden parts started to peel. :-\
Nevertheless, it's a great game in the best hands, I'm sure it will be restored to it's former glory. :D

Just checked mine this afternoon and as promised it works 100%.

Just need to order sidearts and a cpo and I'm done  ;)

Guys, it's a great day because I've played so much of that game BIT (and was still coming back to it on a regular basis in Mame)...
True story: As a kid, I think I spent a whole summer vacations shouting "WOUDA!" (like the main character when he jump/kicks) while kicking the waves or playing tennis at the beach  ;D ;D
I remember clearly that it didn't impress any girl...

Sorry Bruno to hijack this thread but you know that in this country there can be only one:

Mhhh, you force me to use my secret weapons : realtime + fast forward mode = ON ::) 8)

Ready for the operation?

All these water damages because of the missing legs, most probably! Let's fix that once for all!

Bondo for strong reparation!

Remember the 'strap accident' on this edge? Well, the broken part 'fits' not too bad actually, so I'm gonna fix it back with strong wood glue

10 print "BONDO"
20 print "SANDPAPER"
30 goto 10

Ready for the paint...

First layer...

Not too bad...

Really close to the original, just not so shiny, but I'm already very happy after only one layer  :)

Next layer... beware, fresh paint! ...

...well, yeah... cannot resist... I had to remove paint from a brush, so why not 'mark' this baby?  ;D

- Kung Fu Master?
- Yes my master
- Rise!

Sure, the cosmetic work is not finished yet, still some touch up on the side, but definitively done with bondo!

Let's check the board, supposed to be "working"... remember the seller description : "no monitor but play blind"  ::)

What is the purpose of this small additional connector?

The board itself seems to be an original one... IREM powered!  8)

Ok, let's prepare my usual RGB+Sync+Ground to SCART connector..fix it to this PCB...and power on all that stuff made in USA!

Nothing on the screen... no sound ... nothing! Let's remove that additional board with damaged components on it

Hell yeah!!!!  :-* :-* :-*

Played a couple of games... panel working fine, sounds, gfx, credits.. everything working fine!  :-*

Here's the situation from this last week end  ;D

Ok ChrisChris, now who is the master here? ::) ::) ::)   ;D ;D ;D

Still have to order the set of side art, but I don't need the control panel over... its condition is good enough for me!
Where do you plan to order the stuff by the way?

Oh...and let me finish today by this....

WOUAADDDAAA!!!

That's one of those filter boards. These were usually on games (like SW etc) for "FCC regulation" reasons so they don't create any "interference". However, in every day use, they simply form an extra resistance for your powers and signals going to and from the board. I always advice to get rid of them.

Basically there is just a small filter capacitor on every line going into and out of the board.

HOWEVER, I have NEVER seen what has happened to those capacitors !!! Looks like they developed big "bulbs" of air ?!?!?
Totally weird ! Usually these ceramic kind of caps last like forever.....
I wonder what could have caused this ?

Indeed very weird  :?

never saw that eather...

Anyway, great that the board works !
Looks like you have the same issue here as for the assault, 180 degrees rotated screen  :D

Yes, It's my 'curse'!  ;)

I don't know if I'll use that TV monitor, I may use an arcade monitor already 'framed' for that KFM, just have to check if it works first.

Wadaaaaa!
Great job, you're working fast little dragon  ;) ;)
Actually I think you deserve the black belt more than I do because I had... nothing to do to fix that game except checking the voltages before powering it up.  ::)

The only source I could find so far for sidearts and cpo is at "game on grafix":
side-art (http://www.gameongrafix.com/products/kung-fu-master-side-art)
cpo (http://www.gameongrafix.com/products/kung-fu-master-cpo-1)
I've never ordered there, wanna group buy?

Just for the record, and not in a hijack mode at all, here's a picture of my PCB (I removed the protective metal cage for the picture of course):

I don't have that filter you have. I thought it was just used in older games (I have one on my Super Bug for instance and had to ask Speleo_de what was the use of that thing).

I do have an original Kung Fu Master boardset that I ripped from my Galaxian cab when I got it. It's been in working order when put in storage, but I'd happily test it again if anyone is interested in it. It's just collecting dust over here.

Back from v1 atm (yeah, real time work, it changes!).

I'm in a hurry. I don't want spending precious time to dismantle a TV and frame it this time. So I'll use one of my *spare* monitor that should be plug'n' play...  let's use this Matsushita nmx l21g

Working! Yeah!  :-*

Yeah, but :

- flipped picture!
- picture size to set.

Now that I'm back on my iMac, just checked the Kung Fu Master manual, and I see this  ::)

So next time I'll go in the V1, probably tomorrow morning, I should fix that, and adjust the screen picture size...

As expected, that switch was the one!  Right picture 'orientation' now :

Next step, to setup the picture size. No problem except ... the horizontal size... too small

It supposed to be 'this', but when using an allen key to rotate inside, there's no effect at all, not even a single move of the picture? Part to replace?

This doesn't stop me to play my first game in good condition :

Now let's check the control panel. Well, it's 'used' but not damaged, so there no reason to change it for me.

Ok, a small missing overlay part close to the "2 player" button, but I can live with that.
The bottom of the overlay peel of. A good 'glue' advise/method to fix it back?

Dirty here!

After a "magic sponge" session, it looks far better, huh?

I think it's time for that KFM to leave the 'repair room'  8)

Now I have to order a set of side art...

...that will hide the remain of glue on the sides..

Playing time!  :P My first high score

69520 ... floor 4 ... damn, these butterflies are damn hard to pass!

Evidently Williams replaced a cap in the monitor chassis used in Moon Patrol because the image the Irem PCB (similar to Kung Fu Master/Spartan-X) displayed was so narrow, allowing the image to be stretched horizontally more than usual.  Perhaps something like this is needed?

Possibly, but it doesn't explain why there's no picture move at all when I'm trying to move that 'part', supposed to be 'H-SIZE'?  :-\

hey bruno, are you going to repaint the front or is that it?

Small touch up here & there, mostly on the sides... will do when I'll have the side art stickers, but nothing more! There's not reason to fully repaint the front for me.
As I say... I keep things used... part of the charm & history of a cabinet  8)
Dare to say my KFM doesn't look gorgeous now?  ;D

All these water damages because of the missing legs, most probably! Let's fix that once for all!

Where do you buy these leg mounting plates? I have only seen them with the hole in the center.

It's amazing how much different the sideart makes cabinets look.
I'm just finishing up on a euro Dig Dug, with the wood grain sides, and I'm wondering wether to apply the cabaret side art that I have  ???

This cab is just amazing.
I love it.
And i have sweet memories of me playing it when i was young.
I remember to have pass around 8 hours in a house of my mother's friend, full of cabs because her cousin was a local operator, playing this and exciting soccer......
I really enjoy that day.
