Title: Eurocade..2013 !
Post by: level42 on January 11, 2013, 07:35:56 PM
Oh yes sir, it's back !

It's bigger......

It's better.......

It's meaner !!!!!!

It's .........

<<< EUROCADE 2013 >>>

Dates:

     14 AND 15 September 2013

Location: the capital of TV & Radio in The Netherlands: HILVERSUM

More SOON !!!!!

Location: "Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid" (The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision) - Hilversum

An absolutely unique location in The Netherlands, all history in film, video and audio recordings from the Dutch public broadcasting stations is archived there, deep under the ground for natural cooling.
There is also a great museum displaying Dutch TV and Radio history in all it's aspects.

Each year 250.000 people visit "Beeld & Geluid" !!

Eurocade will be an integral part of "The Retro Game Experience", which means that a lot of great things can be organized, things impossible to do at the "regular" location.

There are two "theater rooms", each fully equipped with analogue and digital projection equipment, which for sure will be used ! The ambient lighting in both are RGB LEDs so any kind of lighting can be chosen:

During the last months (in fact, almost before Eurocade 2012 was ended....) Gyruss has been investing a LOT of time AND effort in getting this idea of the ground at this great place....so already now: a big THANKS to Pieter !!!!

Pieter, if I missed anything please add your info !

Also: there is still a lot of work to be done. We have a lot of ideas but of course everything still needs to be discussed and worked out.

So.....more info later :)

Yes guys, this one is going to be epic!!  ;D

As André said, Pieter has taken a big risk and has already put in a lot of effort trying to get something accomplished, with success.  :spaceace:

We already have a lot of ideas for this weekend, and there will be plenty of stuff to do and to see. It will be all about .....

No, don´t give away all the fun stuff already, Erik.  ;D

So, mark those dates in your agenda, you know that you just want to be there. And I know that you will regret it for ever if you weren´t there!

Yep, this one will be public.
Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !

don't you worry that by going "public" that also means careless players ?  thus more possibilities to damage cabs.
that might turnout people from bringing theirs "holy" grail cab to the event .

i know you're working on this :D

Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !
Post by: gyruss on January 14, 2013, 01:10:13 PM
We know this is a concern so there will be very strict rules in the game room, like no drinking and eating food.

And not only will the whole Eurocade crew (and other volunteers) be present to make sure everybody respects the cabs, but there also will be professional staff from Beeld en Geluid to keep an eye on things.

Speaking for myself, i think our cabs are meant to be played and enjoyed and this is a great opportunity to show and teach the general public about our hobby. So i'll be bringing all my cabs, including the restored Donkey kong, Mario Bros & Galaga and my near mint Red Tent.

Lol. :D
Seriously, it would be great, if we can make a row of Zaccs, there is a Crazy Kong (Etienne), Vanguard (Robin & Erik), a Scramble (Erik), and a Frogger (Laszo) nearby, maybe I can find a solution to take 3 or 4 more to make the row longer. :D

First of all: it's great to see a lot of positive responses here and also quite a few from some "new" guys :)

About some issues mentioned:

don't you worry that by going "public" that also means careless players ?  thus more possibilities to damage cabs.
that might turnout people from bringing theirs "holy" grail cab to the event.

To be honest....I really liked the family-like atmosphere of Eurocade and I doubt that it can be transported to such a huge location...but we will see and I will try to be there :)

Thorsten, be assured that this was in our minds while discussing this idea and still is. In fact, the idea of having a public Eurocade has always been in our mind from the very start. However, any real choice was always limited by the clubhouse: we are simply not allowed to have a real public event in that building, so the "choice" was rather easy...
On the other side, I think most collectors (at least I know I do) are happy to share their machines as much as possible, show them off and see other people have fun with them. After all, this is the time that these machines shine. Not when we're alone in our gameroom having a game (however great that is !)....

Don't be scared by the huge building !
This afternoon I've been at "Beeld & Geluid" and Gyruss showed me around the facilities to give me an idea of it all. I am now even more convinced that we can combine both the intimate atmosphere of the Clubhouse with a more public event.

The primary "gameroom" will be this room:

Take a good look at the chairs and take in mind that the camera is in the furthest opposite corner of that you see and you will get a feel for the size of the room. It is not that much bigger than the gameroom at the Clubhouse, although it will allow for more games to be there because of the perfect rectangular shape.
The height of the room is comparable. The lighting can be totally controlled which is awesome, f.i. like this:

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8470/8381774560_0849e538cb_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/8381774560/)
IMAG5741 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/8381774560/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8514/8381774648_54da0f4077_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/8381774648/)
IMAG5742 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/8381774648/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr

Another benefit: there is only 1 entry/exit into the room. There is no "walking through", people entering the room will do so if they are interested in the games. Also the "feel" of the room is intimate and warm...also it dampens sound quite a bit, a good thing for our games.
Also, the room is relatively far away from any drinks/eating facilities, people are very unlikely to walk in with a drink or food and naturally this will be prohibited.

Apart from all of this, my machines are going to be there, you can bet I have an eye on them and all the other machines, and that goes for the rest of the Eurocade team PLUS there will be volunteers and professional stuff from "Beeld & Geluid".

If I would have some doubt about my cabs not being safe, I would definitely not put them there. And yes my Star Wars will be there and of course my Lunar Lander, the two games I put most money in....esp. the LL  ::) ;D

We've been to a public event (Slam) in the UK and there were rows and rows of pinballs and about as much videogames as at our previous Eurocades and I didn't see a single person abusing a game. Even the kids around seem to have a lot of respect for the machines....

Of course we cannot give anyone a written insurance that nothing will happen, or even that a machine might get damaged. But that's the same as on the previous Eurocades.

I feel, the Eurocade team feels, that this will work out just fine.

Silently I wish that a point blank could make it's appearance. Maybe if the opportunity presents itself i will get my hands on one before the event and take it with me ;)

I think all of our cabs have seen a MUCH worse environment and have taken WAY harder treatment back in the days. For me it's no problem that the public will be there. The familiar athmo comes after the show anyway ;)

I think it is still cool. A nineties classic and with Operation Wolf and Time Crisis one of the most famous and important shooters ever in my humble opinion.

also the sound effects are cool, NO PROBLEMO, etc. Shame its a bit damaged, but I heard terminators heal quickly

Are the main activites on Saturday or Sunday? The return price for Sunday is a lot cheaper in the early afternoon than in the evening, so I'll book the cheapest flight if most things happen on Saturday.

We're almost done to go "live" with all the required info on the website, the various forums and our facebook page. Should be just a couple of days....sorry for delay, but we wanted to present all info as complete as possible in one go.

This year, Eurocade will be an integral part of the Retro Game Experience which will take place on

14 & 15 september 2013

Hilversum, The Netherlands

The Eurocade team have teamed up with the people of "Beeld & Geluid", or "Sound & Vision" to create a Retro Game Experience that Europe hasn't seen before !

It captures the history of the video game in all it’s aspects.

The location will be the wonderful “Sound & Vision” building. (http://www.eurocade.eu/Eurocade/Location.html)

On various levels in the building, visitors can enjoy, play  and learn all about all kinds of videogames from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Everything will be set up in a professional way to make this a real “experience”
There will be all kinds of decoration to warp you back in time and enhance the retro feeling !

We already have received a lot of positive interest from people from all over Europe and even the US.

Of course, like any other Eurocade, we hope that people will be bringing one or more of their cabs !! Without your help we can't make it a success !!

Please let us know here in this list or via PM if you want to bring one or more machines.

Really looking forward to Eurocade! There are so many great games on the list. I wish I was within driving distance to the place so I could bring a game myself just to contribute, but at least I'm getting my own ass down there this year. Anyone up for an non-formal Juno First competition? ;)

The official Beeld & Geluid/Sound & Vision website about the Retro Game Experience is now LIVE !!!

Because it's mainly aimed at the (Dutch) Beeld & Geluid audience it is all in Dutch but maybe Google translate can help you a bit.

In any case, there are lots of GREAT videos to discover. Gyruss has dug up a lot of brilliant original old film- and videomaterial of BITD, all of course related to video gaming.

Hi chaps.

I'm planning on coming over either on the Friday or early Saturday morning (flying from Edinburgh) and staying until the Sunday. Is anyone coming from the airport on eitehr day so that I could possibly arrange a lift please? If not, is the public transport good... and how easy would the trip be? Sorry for the questions... needing to figure out some plans first.  :)

Will be wearing a kilt for sure!

All the best!

Assuming you arrive at Schiphol Amsterdam airport:

http://9292.nl/en/journeyadvice/station-schiphol/station-hilversum-noord/departure/2013-08-23T1656

You can get a direct train from Schiphol Station (The station is directly under the main building) to Hilversum Noord which is very near Sound & Vison and the hotel.
Travelling time is only 48 minutes. You need to get the train heading for Utrecht CS.

If you buy a train ticket ask for a return ticket for a few days if possible. In Holland, return tickets are cheaper than two seperate singles, unlike f.i. the UK.

Strange to have room for more games, when Andre wrote this yesterday:

Quote from: Level42
That is the big problem, we don't have an extra DK machine AND we don't have the space left to have a serious and working set-up for this. Maybe a next Eurocade.

To me it dosent take much to let a guy hog an extra machine, put a velvet rope around it and let him videotape it.... - I bet he vould even draw a crowd...

Not so strange, the Beatmania has already been in the pipeline for a long time, we just had to sort out some final little things, which we now did.  ;D

That's because you haven't organized a Eurocade and a WR try yet. We have.

It took an extra sunday before Eurocade to set everything up. Aart was kind enough to come over and see if everything was to his liking that day. Even on the early morning of Eurocade itself I still had to focus completely on the Galaxian set-up and couldn't help unloading or do other stuff.

Mind you, I loved doing it and it was worth every second of time, but this time, with the RGE being SO much bigger, we simply don't have the time.

Nor the space, exactly because of that crowd, reserving extra room for the WR player, having to comply with TwinGalaxies extremely strict rules of video-taping an official WR try, putting up an extra camera and beamer set-up .....we can't have that in Theatre 2 (the "arcade room") for sure, but even not at the Atrium because we are going to need the space there too.

The Beatmania is "just another cab" in Theater 2, like CKONG said....already in the pipeline for quite some time.

Trust us, if we would have seen a bit of a realistic opportunity, we would have done it. We can't make it happen though, sorry.
Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !
Post by: level42 on August 01, 2013, 12:01:05 AM
Oh, and....we don't have an extra DK machine. We have the DK machine for the hi-score competition that the Eurocade visitors and general public can compete in. We figured that the value of having a playable DK machine was of (even) more interest of those visitors than having a WR try.

We would like to see how we can facilitate the WR try in another way though as we'd love to help out. Maybe Eurocade 201(4/5?).
Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !

Ok. Thanks for the reply Erik, that makes perfect sence.

@Andre
Thanks for making me look like a complete idiot, not only to the forum but to me - myself!
And by that I mean: obvious I cant figure out to put up an arcade game, plug it on, put up velvet ropes arould it, and let some guy tape what he wishes to tape..
Sorry to say, but by saying all those words, it looks like for me that youre promoting your self, and not EuroCade..
Regarding the WR attempt, no one said anything about setting up cameras/projector/big screen, because the request came this late (that I even figured out myself)

But seriously, thanks for the _non_ kind way of explaining things, instead of "speaking" to me you "spoke down" to me - I too demand some kind of respect, and that you seriously lacked with your last two statements!

@Muerto: cool down, man  8)  I really don't think that André meant to be 'looking down' on you und I didn't understand it that way at all. I know how much work it is to make something like Eurocade happen. All the organizing and stuff. Not to speak of something big like the upcoming EC. Our parties are far smaller than that but there's already lots of thing to consider and think about. For EC13 they also have to deal with other things, like the rooms or the owner of the location etc. They will be working for it at least 3 weeks, weekend before and after will be blocked anyway. Cabs must be moved, arrangements must be made. I don't know what the regulations are to make an official WR attempt...but I understand they don't want to deal with it in the remaining time.

just my 2 cents, of course.

André, Dirk and I will try to be there....what cab(s) are we supposed to bring? :)

@Muerto: I'm sure andre isn't trying to talk you down, he just explained (in his own, clear way) why the WR attempt can't take place this edition.
And please believe me, we would love to have one, but it just isn't possible due to the various factors that Andre mentioned.

@Luigi: So cool to have you guys around, i'm sure you're going to have a great time... Also, hurry up if you want to book a room, they are going pretty fast.. ;)

It must be the weather outside, but everybody seems to be a bit overheated lately  ;D ;D  ;) Let's hope that the next few days, with 35+ degrees temperature forecasts over here, don't mess things up.

Or is it because of the lack of news from Love regarding our wanted games?

Anyway, Thorsten, I am sure that we would like to bash some games at the RGE event, if you get my drift!  ;)   And it would be great if you and Dirk could make it, it has been too long seeing you guys! (although, Dirk ....)

Michael, I am completely flabbergasted by your reply.....like the guys before me said I merely tried to honestly explain why we decided not to go for this (and it was a unanimous decision from all Eurocade crew members).

About the Beamer: you can't have a WR try going on in some dark corner and pretend nothing is going on there. You want to have the public to be able to follow the game, that's what makes it exciting ! Rembember Aart's try at Eurocade 2012 !

You also can't have people looking over the WR player's shoulder all the time of course.

So although it may not have been requested, IF we would have wanted to do it we felt that this was a necessity, not some option.

@Luigi: you are totally right. We will be transporting almost half the cabs in the weekends before and after Eurocade/RGE. Because of the tight budget we will handle this ourselves. No problem, we do it with a lot of love.

Apart from this I'd like to mention that it is never my intention to promote myself in any way, if I came across like that I regret it.

I do think that the Eurocade crew is putting an incredible amount of love and spare time into RGE, with Pieter being the one to be under the heaviest load by far. We're not bragging, simply stating facts.

When you are organizing something like RGE you sometimes have to take decisions that wont be to everyone's liking or agreement. We try our best to judge things as good as possible and make a decision based on that.

Thorsten & Dirkgreat that you guys can make it !!!

Yes the Hyper Bishi Bashi has proven to be a very popular 3 player game at any arcade party :)

For those who don't know, it has loads of crazy and funny mini-games where you directly compete with three players. The most fun is that, for a change, it _is_ OK to bang on the HUGE buttons.....carefully of course :)

Do note that Thorsten said "we'll see". It is a heavy beat to move....

Yeah, it was huge fun, just like the Hyper Olympic. :D

Dear member / eurocade participant,
As you know you will need a freeplay option on your cabinet that you will bring to Eurocade.
There are 3 options;
1. your cabinet is on freeplay
2. there is no free play on your game, but you have a credit switch
3. you dont have free play and no button

in the case of 3 we can provide you a button in this form :

Its a stainless steel bracket with a button and wires which can easily go through the coinslot to the internal credit switch

It is a requirement to have the game you bring on freeplay as we cannot have any open coindoors for ovious reasons.
If you need option 3, then contact me ASAP (before 25 August 2013)

Option 3 will cost you € 4,- and you can keep that button bracket after the event.

Thank you !

Greets
Etienne & The rest of the eurocade crew.

I'd like to add that these brilliantly conceived brackets (patented by Luigi ;)) can be easily removed again if you wish so, and cause no harm to your coindoor.

Also: many games can be set to Freeplay using the DIP swithes on the game board, some people might not even be aware which games support this. A good source to check this:

http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=info

Look up your game and click Dips and you'll find the info. If you are in doubt, please PM Etienne.

I actually did not make the stickers for luigi's batch of brackets, i just printed two for my own brackets that i already had, but my brackets are less wide, so i needed to paste them 90 degrees turned  ;D

We consider to bring our Star Castle along with the Bishi Bashi. It's a cocktail table and we think there will be room enough in the car. Is there room enough in the location?

btw...great picture (the 2nd one)....videogame in front of a shop....just like in the good old days  ::)

I really like the first picture too, all this CRT goodness ! ;)

That would be great Thorsten ! We're not 100% sure that the Space Zap cocktail will end up at the RGE because obviously it's for sale and we really need at least one cocktail to show that part of arcade history. Apart from that, it's another great vector game and a Cinematronics one :)
We'll try to squeeze it in somewhere ;)

Just returned home from Sound & Vision, have tested all the professional CRT monitors and the vast majority works great.

The Atari XEGS was perfect for testing with it's built in self-tests (audio & video) and of course Missile Command :)

The big one's in front, the smaller one's behind....

The test set-up....the Atari XEGS was great as a test system with it's built in sound and video tests and of course also built-in Missile Command :) :)

Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9600751234/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr

...reminds me of those old videowalls you used to see in shops etc. ;D ;D ;D

Not only is it great to have those great quality CRT monitors to show the consoles and homecomputers in their "most natural form" but having these it will also give the entire console section a great and consistent look ! :)

Great news about the Frogger, a classic that could not be missing in the great line up of games, and personaly I love that it is the Euro version too :):)

I remember the stick not working 100% at Eurocade 2012 in one direction and I guess that is what Leo wants to have a look at ?

I took the liberty of putting it on the list, hope that's OK Leo !

About the monitors: sizes I think are 20" and the smaller one's 14"

About the signs:  Pieter ?

We were indeed planning to name every game, but I decided not to do this due to our very tight schedule and the shortness of the event.

Also this would meant that we would have to name everything (25 consoles, 50 cabs, 50 handhelds and of other stuff like controllers, rare games en memorabilia)..

I agree this might be a missed opportunity but there are other things that are more important atm..

But thanks for offering your help.  :)
Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !

I was dreaming of an app that scanned a QR code on every machine and produced all the info....but seriously who's going to do that, people want to mostly play I guess :)

Seriously, I would have loved to have at least some signs with at least some of the "milestone machines" but on the other hand, the selection of games is so great that about all of them are "milestones" in their own way....

It also would a bit ruin the "arcade feeling" we are trying to recreate ;)

I _do_ think Computer Space needs/deserves a sign with a bit of explanation though, being the mother of them all....just some short facts that it was the first ever, year of release, Nolan Bushnell....

Thorsten, big thanks for thinking with us and helping us out !!!

I was kind of thinking something simular, but then with framed pictures of the inside

ofcourse this should be photographed proffesionally for the best results

Kind of what you see in a museum, but as with the explanatory cards per cabinet, lack of time kills that idea...

i think if photographed well, this kind of framed pics will look awesome !

Ok ... so now I have to go and build a backdoor for my cab. ;) Are working keylocks necessary for the coindoor and backdoor?? I use to have them open and/or unlocked at home. Is there a maybe a guideline what minimum requirements exist for all cabs shown. If this discussion would not have happened, I might have brought that little VP without a door and locks in the front at all. :(

if there is a piece of paper in between the door that keeps it close, i think thats ok

As long as the backdoor does not fall out you're ok i guess

coindoor could be closed with a tiewrap or something more nice..

(a broken lock that can only be opened from the inside will do the trick also  ;)

...... Is there a maybe a guideline what minimum requirements exist for all cabs shown.

Yep, they have to be in working order!  ;) :D
Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !

Well there will be general public and kids and so we want the machines to be safe so yes locks are required at least at the coin doors which will be "out in the open".

Now, backsides MIGHT end up to a wall but also MIGHT end up next to another cab's back. In these cases they could be open but you know, we still don't know what could happen....

There will be constant supervision in all areas but we can't guarantee a 100% security.

I guess Sound & Vision (nor we) would like to get into legal problems because of open cabs.

So: closed and locked coin doors, closed and locked backs, firmly tightened control panels please :)

To add to this:

These kind of events are great because you finally have a dead line to do that thing you always still needed to do for certain cabs. F.i. I'm working on the LL coin door now and this discussion also reminded me that my Joust's backdoor has been broken in two since it fell off during transport for Eurocade 2012. This door seems to have a sinister thing about it because it was also the one that totally busted my toe during Eurocade 2011 transport...this is also why it broke in 2012, it was already a bit bent after if fell on my toe (you guys figure out how that felt....nice metal strip under it to enhance the feeling  ;D)

Anyway, need to fix it :)

About locks:

I bought 10 "long" and 10 " short" locks from Chips4sale on KLOV, see here: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=162297&highlight=locks
He managed to cram these 20 locks into a fixed rate priority box that shipped for around 17 bucks. Ask him to put a 25 dollar value on the little green form and you'll have no import worries.... ;) Cheapest way to get these AFAIK....
Awesome quality (Happ) and they all use the same key which makes life so much easier for me, I should end up with all my games to have all the same locks.

hm, it might be interesting for some people to see how such a cab in reality looks inside. It doesn't have to work and of course the tube should be discharged and it shouldn't be powered at all ;)

Or a plexiglass backdoor, some signs and a tl inside... of course we need a nice, clean cab for that.

Yesterday in the evening we prepared the Space (Star) Castle cocktail. New locks, credit button (it had to be a regular button with a microswitch cause the PCB need both inputs (NC and NO)). We will try to bring the wood and the fixed chairs as well.....crossing fingers there's enough room in the car :)

Since the cocktail was for the game Take off, a clone of Rip Off, I have to make a sticker for Star Castle that we can put over the Take Off instructions.

Etienne, I couldn't find the correct font. The closest was Bauhaus Bold but there are still differences to some letters of the original font. Maybe you know better what font it.

Left is the original - right is Bauhaus Bold

Of course, nobody of the public will know the differences but...you know ;)

So maybe it is an idea that you or any of the guys sell me a real nice, clean fully restored  SW, Tron, Defender, .... and I will put a plexi back door in it  :P :P

Etienne, in case you are searching the font, let me point you to the capital R....very unusual.

I just saw that PONG seems to use Bauhaus-font, too. The N is typical.

but i think the font used in the quasar CPO also looks like it

Yes that must be true, we had the info that there was only 1 room left !

Must say I am very very happy about this, definitely a great result, the Hotel must be happy too ;)

So guys, do we want a joined meal there or not ?? Price for a 3 course menu would be around €25 (please correct me if I'm wrong Pieter).
I can't comment on the quality of food or what you will get for it...but well.....the quality of food @Eurocade always seems to produce "mixed feelings"  ;D ;D ;D

It's 22.45 now. First time I sit down since 18.15 and I'm not sure if I can get up again to head for my bed......pffffff.

Of course today it had to be 32 degrees and it was wrapping day for me. Luckily my good friend Etienne agreed to help me with this job. Not only did I have to get out all the machines that will go to Eurocade, but regretfully my gameroom is still a mix of gameroom, workplace and disorganized storage place.....so had to get a lot of other stuff moved as well. Lucklily I finished that before Etienne arrived so he was right on time for the wrapping. He brought some awesome compact "all in one" PCs for the much needed Classic PC games, all already configured with those games. Also of course he brought his Crazy Kong.

So we wrapped up the following games:

1) Crazy Kong
2) Asterock
3) Joust (which will play Robotron)
4) Centipede
5) Lunar Lander
6) Berzerk
7) Star Wars cockpit

Nr. 8 ) Galaxian was already wrapped last Monday.......

It's more work than you think that's for sure but they are READY FOR PICK-UP !!!!!!

(Etienne made a pic, I didn't have the time/energy ;)

It's been hot here in southern Germany as well (>30 Degrees).
How is the weather forecast for the Eurocade-Weekend.
Is the Main 'Cab-Room' in Hilversum climated?

Our two Cabs have been checked for proper funktion and loose pieces. We also added the required locks and the freeplay-option.
They are ready for pickup.

9 days and counting.....

The weather forecast on the weekend is positive for the event.. no extreme temperatures and no rain... but that may chance..

We will rent something to keep the temperature down in the gameroom, but it's probably going to be reasonable warm inside, but not as warm as the first Eurocade. ;)

If I put it out for some time it will start normally, no RAM erros at all, and when I play for 15 minutes or so the picture starts to get weird

If it comes up OK, it always fails the CPU board test at the test menu, sometimes one RAM unit fails, most of the times 2 do.

I changed the switching PSU (put a brand new one in it) , but I get the same result.......

I´m really dissapointed right now, with this happening just a week before Eurocade...... I #$#&%_() play it every day without problems  :(

Maybe somebody has an idea what this could be

Translation of the paper article:

Guy from Hilversum driving force behind expo game machines

Mario out of the mothballs

Hilversum, Monday

Those who grew up in the 80s and 90s probably remember them: the first shift of man-tall, strangely beeping game machines with Pac-Man or Space Invaders in them. You could find them in snack bars, café's and arcades. Hi-tech at that time; today an average phone offers more intelligent amusement.
And yet, there is still a small group of fans of these "arcade games".
They will present their treasures next weekend at "Sound & Vision" in Hilversum during the Retro Game Experience.

Driving force behind this exposition is Poppe ten Dolle from Hilversum (34) who also works at Sound & Vision in everyday life. He is the proud owner of 13 game machines. To be precise: computer games, not jukeboxes or (money)gambling machines or pinballs.

"Eight I have in a special room in my house, the gameroom, the rest are stored." He was a kid in the 90s but his love for the machines goes further back. "In my youth there were "modern" games like The Simpsons and Terminator 2, but the old Donkey Kong is my favorite.

The club of collectors is small but tight. "Because it's a niche-hobby you quickly come into contact with collectors from abroad. I really like that everyone is helping each other, it's a friendly scene. And that's great because I am not technical at all."

Ten Dolle enthusiastically explains the difference between "uprights" (standing up machines), sitdownracers (machines where the player is on a bike or in car), woody cabs (cabinets from wood) and candy cabs (out of plastic).
Finding those machines gets harder though."Recently 40 of them were discovered in a warehouse in Belgium. And in England the arcade section of an old cruises ship was emptied. But these huge finds are rare.

We also learn that the Japanese Shigura Miyamoto is Ten Dolle's biggest hero. He conceived legends like Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda and still works in the industry. By the way do should know that Mario was called Jumpman in the first games ? He got the Mario name, as legends tell because of a conflict between Nintendo of America and Mario Segale because they were behind in paying rent for the building. Segale left when they promised to pay very soon and Nintendo eternalized his name.

Films
Several videogame related movies will be shown during the Retro Game Experience and it shows video arcade games and consoles throughout the years.
Ten Dolle: "We have in total about 100 devices that people can really play on"
For those who think this is a great way to get rid of their last guilders: all games are free (to play).

Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !

I suppose these things have all kinds of connector and voltage configurations ?

They either have mini-jack 2.5mm tip positive 6V (gakken) or EIAJ-2/3 both inside (bandai) and outside (tomy, epoch) positive.
If I have 4 or 5, then I can run that amount at the same time, and sometimes swap with games inside the desk.
Guess I will bring a couple of junk ones I can leave behind, but I also want to have some holy-moly's available for real fans.

Guess the basic line-up will be:
Tomy Pac Man
Gakken Puck Monster
Gakken Frogger
Bandai Zackman (digdug clone)
Tomy Kingman
Gakken Super Cobra
Nintendo Donkey Kong JR. new widescreen
Space Guardian Gundam
These games I have in pretty used condition, so I won't mind an extra scratch.

Specials on request (these are in great condition, but I want to let big fans play them):
Bandai Burger Time (this one does 200€ loose).
Bandai Frisky Tom
Bandai Zaxxon
Coleco Ms. Pac Man
Gakken Crazy Kong
Bambino UFO Master Blaster Station
Donkey Kong JR. Table top
Parker Q*bert
Gakken Amidar
Epoch Star Force
Entex Stargate
Coleco Zaxxon (should I bring that one? game sucks)

Are most covered in the real arcade versions too?

I'm going to try to break the WR on Space Zap. The current high score is 244.250, my personal best is around 227k and I only played it a couple of timesd at Nozomi.

won't bother filming it, but it would be fun if I could break it at the RGE
Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !
Post by: level42 on September 10, 2013, 07:05:23 PM
Uh, we do hope that people are decent enough to play one or two games and then allow others a chance on that cab....this event is about telling about our hobby, sharing our passion for the machines, and having fun playing the games, not about WR's.

This is also why we decided for a time limit for the DK competition. We feel that everyone deserves to have a go on the Donkey Kong.

And if the current signs are correct, it's going to be quite busy  ;D

Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !
Post by: anunaki on September 10, 2013, 07:09:51 PM
Well, Space Zap is a really frustrating game so I will only play a couple of times in the whole weekend. So no worries

I played it maybe 20 times at Nozomi over the last couple of months and it turns out I'm quite good at it.

What is the DK time limit btw?
Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !

Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !

Wow..... that's pretty short for anyone who knows how to play it... That 's the 2nd barrel stage or the elevator if you're quick

you will never see the conveyor belts stage

How many people are we talking about? And is there maybe a possibility for us to play outside of the public opening hours?

Naturally we don't know yet how many people in total there will be coming because people can just come and buy a ticket, but the pre-sales show very good numbers.

Last question: Sorry but this is really impossible, believe us we tried. That's why we offer the special "Eurocade-only" screening of the Video Craze to somewhat compensate it (so you don't have to go watch that in daytime and can play instead  ;D)

Oh, and talking about that....if you want access to the special "Eurocade" zone at the Café and/or want to see that special "Eurocade-only" screening make SURE you are on the VISITORS LIST in the Eurocade 2013 Visitors thread ! We can't manage to check everyone on the spot ourselves so we will maintain this list to know who's who :)

OK, just wanted to ask. We should know that they won't let us walk through the venue with a carte of beer in our hands  ;D  ;)

OK, so it's going to dinner in the Hotel after the movie. Is there some nice bar where we can go after that?

And one final question (for today): where do we have to drive so we can put the cabs in when we arrive on Saturday? Do we need some sort of sign in our car so we can pass a controlled gate or something like that?

No, you can park right next to the building on the right for the unloading of the cabs.. It will me next to the lane that's going into the garage.

Guys, weather report for Hilversum coming weekend. Pretty OK for an indoor event, at least not as hot as the first episode which is good, but be prepared for some showers.....unloading cabs is directly too a double door so don't worry about that.

I am ready for day two. Yesterday was very cool, hundreds of visitors just for us and all having fun. I spoke to guys who played certain games, like Galaga for the first time in 30 years.  Best compliment that I heard is that lots of visitors to the Eurocade Arcade Room said that it was just as they were back in an Arcade in the eighties.  ;D ;D ;D

That is what this is all about, having fun and let other people have fun on our games.

I showed a lot of personal friends from outside the hobby and relatives all the great stuff that we had to show and they were all amazed. Boy, I felt so proud. And all our games ran without trouble all day long.

Yesterday evening we were on national TV, so I am sure that today will be even better than yesterday.

I watched SBS at home with wifey last night and she loved Pieter's interview and seeing the whole setup of Eurocade. And this afternoon I visited my parents and even they had heard about Eurocade on the radio!!

A HUGE thank you to all the ladies and gentlemen of the Eurocade crew who made all of this possible. A job perfectly done!!! I loved every minute of it and I enjoyed meeting and talking "live" to my friends from the forum very much. I just wish I could have stayed longer on Saturday.

Looking forward to meeting up with all of you again next year (and hopefully even sooner, with all this containers still to come)!

P.s. What was the highscore on the Donkey Kong competition?

Yeah guys, I am home a few yours now and really tired too, but what a weekend !!

I hope to write a bit more tomorrow but it was exceeding my expectations in every way possible.....

I normally dont like to use big words, but I think it's fair to say we wrote a piece of European arcade history.

The goal we had, like Erik said so well, sharing and promoting our hobby in a fun and high quality way was met in all it's aspects.

The look of a guy in his mid twenties walking into the arcade room, his eyes opening up wide and exclaiming a soft "Wow" !...
A father with his small kid on his lap playing the Star Wars cockpit...
The total respect that the people showed for the machines in the way they played them...
People who played one game on a machine and then politely gave the chance to the next guy or girl waiting...
The smiles on people's faces...
The enthusiastic spontaneous reactions...

Those are the things that made it all worthwhile.

Hundreds and hundreds of visitors proved it:
We showed arcade gaming is not dead.....not for a long time !

The best part to me was sunday morning

Hah yeah....for me it was when a certain band called Level 42 happened to come along on the music ;)

By the way, loved the music Etienne. I think I might need to have to copy those sticks of yours.......  ;D ;D ;D

The sound quality of the installation was awesome too. Love that.

Yes at some moments the heat went up in the room, of course having so many machines running plus a lot of people couldn't be battled by the regular air conditioning, and even the extra rented unit couldn't prevent it. However, it was way way way cooler than Eurocade 2011 at all times, and the extra big fan on top of the Space Invaders cab was a good idea on the  sunday...

For sure, we never expected so many visitors and at some moments people had to wait a bit for their turn on the machines. However, I have heard no complaints at all about this...I hope/think people accepted it.

From what I've seen the people were really awesome.

Every bit of fear we had about possible annoying people or maybe some cab slapping or food/drinks being brought in was without a reason.

Once or twice I had to ask people to remove a (properly closed, but still) drinking bottle, which they did and understood. Also had to caution one or two children who were waiting for the Afterburner, after all we worried a bit about their fingers with that huge moving cabinet. Lines were set-out, but you know how kids can be...not seeing the danger.

I have seen/heared absolutely no hitting or slamming of any cab at all.......people totally seemed to respect the games and I heard many people say they were so amazed that the machines were in such great condition still (so I explained that often a lot of hours and love went into getting them back like that).

Of course we had a good number of people asking if the machines were for sale, but no-one accepted my asking price of 50000 Euro for the Star Wars cockpit ;)

Seriously, prices may go up now  ;D ;D ;D   Maybe we'll see an effect like "King of Kong" had on the DK machines ;)

Damage report:

Set-up day:

-Break-out showed a problem making it unplayable. Voltages checked, no easy fix possible, no spare board. The machine was moved to Theatre 1 where it performed a beautifull roll as a decoration piece near the movie screen :)
-Star Wars cockpit showed resets during gameplay. First noticed +5V low voltage, upped it but still same thing happening. This is my main board set with the ESB kit. I suspect some simple contact or maybe shorting problem. Replaced PCB set with spare => ran totally fine without one problem during the entire weekend, and man it saw continuos action for sure, like in fact almost every single machine

Saturday afternoon:
-at the very end of the day Centipede showed jumping Spider and Archer. Turned off machine for the last hour or so. We replaced the PCB next morning, played fine ever since. Centi had some heat problems during the last Eurocade too IIRC. I think I should put some heat-sinks on the RAMs.

Sunday afternoon:
-Spy Hunter started showing sync problems. Machine shut down
-Asteroids button issues (when pressing fire also hyperspace was activated

There were also a couple of other small technical issues, all were solved by Robin and Etienne.

All in all, I think this is an awesome "score" for so many machines being used to their max for two days.

Everybody said it so well already, it was indeed EPIC. Huge thanks to you all for visiting us, helping us, and making this possible.

Also, my wife really enjoyed meeting and getting to know a lot of you guys (and girls of course), that was important for me too.

Anyway, I really can´t find the right words to describe my feelings about the last few days and I am really proud to be member of the Eurocade team, you are all good friends to me.

Tomorrow will be early again, the ´former´ RGE arcade room has to be cleared out, all dedicated cabs and candy cabs will be made ready for the victorious return (yeah, I know, bla bla) to their homes next weekend.

Game On!

It gave me such a proud feelling to see people enjoying my MK cab, that was for me the best thing of the weekend. And of course drinking beers with you guys :spaceace:

about the damage: I had to fix my (brand new) player 2 joystick twice, because this little ring that keeps it in place popped of.......once at day 1, ones at day 2. Thankfully Etienne has real good tie rips skills, for I didn'r bring extra ones ;D

Thank you to all of you. This was absolutely great!
That feeling of walking into the arcade was just amazing, every single time I did it over the weekend.
Watching people play the games, playing games with people watching, man...even the times you had to queue to be able
to play a game was a experience in itself.

Meeting you people was exceeding my expectation, you guys are some of the friendliest people around!

And as for Andre, we will most definitely finish our two player game one day or another! Already looking forward to it!

I'm sorry I didn't get to say goodbye to all of you in person (I tried!) but had to leave to pick up some (hobby related!) stuff
on the way back home. So thank you all for making this happen, I cant wait to see you guys again!

Thanks all for the meeting,

Even if my visit was rushed because of the kids, and was unable to participate to DLF only events . I couldn't recognize and greets all new members (next time, a badge would be good, or we come all with a distinctive sign like a cowboy hat ;) ) but i got enought time to feel the mood, greet some long time members and play some games.
Was great to see a arcade so full ;)  Star wars was definetly the favourite of my son.

On the way back, we finished the roadtrip at Burger king ;)

thanks all

Hi all,

I would like to thank the EC2013 crew big time. Guys (and girls) you did a marvellous job. Lots of visitors, lots of media attention. My kids loved being at EC2013 and even my wife found a game she liked... this DJ music machine....

I really enjoyed just walking around on Saturday and Sunday and just seeing people having fun playing arcade games. Saturday at the hotel I had a great opportunity to speak to many of the members from this great forum. Really nice to see so many of you in the flesh so to speak.

I hope you all got home safely.

Hi everybody.

Thanks a lot for a great weekend. Though the rough weather on Saturday and talking far too much (and sometimes too loud) wasn't helpful with my cold (I can hardly speak this morning, already had lots of tea ;) ), I had very much fun. I played maybe 10-12 games all in all, but standing in the gameroom and watching the happy people, grinning and smiling while playing, was really great. Some people even were singing on Dunsay, when you could hear the music. btw. I loved the atmosphere on Sunday when there was music in the gameroom. On Saturday it was far too quiet...if there was at all ;)

Almost 3k paying visitors instead of the expected 500, and to have been a small part of it makes me a little proud.

I have to repeat the wish for badges. It would have been great if the Eurocade-people could have been recognized. Maybe with nickname.
I don't know if this event will ever be repeated, but I would really suggest to have name signs then.

A few selected pics. I loved the gameroom when it was crowded to its limit ;)

Yes! I'm home in cold and rainy Norway again. Thanks for a very nice weekend in Hilversum! I really enjoyed meeting you guys, and I had a good time playing lots and lots of games. I got to play a lot of cabs I've dreamed of playing, and there were some nice surprises as well. I had a great time at Eurocade this weekend.

I arrived an hour late because of some problems loading the cab in the car (I just love loading cabinets in the pouring rain  ;D). Couldn't believe how many people were already in the building when I arrived.

The event was perfectly organised and the arcade room was amazing. Great to see so many cabs in working order.

Also great to meet so many people from the forum. Although name tags would have been nice. It's hard to remember all the names and to match that to the nicks.

Brilliant pics Chris !!!

HUGE thank you to you and the Retroludix guys, who arranged ALL the consoles and home computers...

I totally loved all the boxes in the revolving door at the entry :)

This:

I am almost already used to it, but what a beautiful building it is ! I love modern architecture....and we have some great architects in our little country.

Thanks but: great stuff + great people + great place = great pics  ;)

Saturday, I saw people looking at them boxes and then asking the shop how much it was to buy them  :D

Also, I would like to thank here my friend 4l4in who carefully checked my cabs with me before this Eurocade and made them so reliable.
Even my moody Space Invaders from the Duke of Lancaster hold on during 2 long days of intensive playing sessions.
Stress tests: passed with high distinction  :spaceace:

Back in Germany I must say this was a GREAT and AWESOME weekend (although I only stayed the saturday) - for me it was a special dutch "back in time" week (more on this later on my blog w/ pictures)
Met a lot of friends, played some nice cabs I ever wanted to (tell me - how do you play Lunar Lander? I didn't got ANY points at all at this game) and was very nice
to see people engaging with the games (reminder: next time small manuals would be good - I always saw/helped people trying to shoot at Robotron with the buttons ;-) ).

The building and its architecture spoke on his own and with the game room upstairs maybe setting a new standard for game room wall decorations :-)
Was very hot in there - so glad all machines went well the whole weekend. On my exhibitions I normally have a 30% total loss...
more of these please! Anybody has some nice pics on the setup (before and after - with lightning?). Most of my pics went blurry.

For my own exhibition http://www.retro-spektive.de (http://www.retro-spektive.de) I need some details regarding visitor counts and maintance - whom to ask?
I'm trying to arrange a big retro game exhibition in 2014 in Hamburg and for my 100+ slides presentation I would need some "insights". Thanks for a PM :)

anyway - I must say - I totally loved the experience and the entire setup with all parts of games and the nice building. I can't see the point in "driving 400 km round trip" is too far for so many people (in special for some Germans) - where else do you get such a setup (same counts for most Retro Gaming fleamarkets/beurs).

P.S.: If I had knonw Jochen Hippel would be there - I would have brought a couple of my AMIGA games :)

"Too far away" and "No space left" never were valid excuses for not coming to an event or buying a cab. Someone made that up and since then it's an urban myth that you can only place a certain amount of machines in one spot and that it doesn't pay if you drive hundrets of kilometers just to play those old crappy videogames. ;)

Thanks Cebulba !

Well, I can officially announce that the total number of visitors for the entire weekend was:

300   !!!!

Uh, oops......I forgot one number there it was:

3000

This was WAY WAY more than we ever dared to dream of, in fact, it was the most successful event at Beeld & Geluid ever !!!! (Excluding stuff like organized by TV/Radio, like Top2000 Café)

The good thing was that because there were so much things to do, it never became really unpleasantly busy, at least that was my impression.

It is also a major boost for Pieter because he kinda put his head on the chopping block by getting this thing from the ground within Beeld & Geluid, but he can laugh now. Laugh very loud  ;D ;D

Exactly! ... and if people regard you as a crazy weirdo, just pull out that Game Boy out of your pocket and eat it like a wild beast in front of them...

Here's a cellphone video of the atrium area where the consoles, candies and cocktail tables were displayed.
Once again I felt like a kid in a candy store and should have paused longer on each game to film the beauty of it properly (You can barely see the Star Castle and Space Zap for instance).
Oh, well, at least it exists: Consoles+Jap Cabs+Cocktails (http://youtu.be/lrb_ydXUWF0)

I also have a vid of the handhelds/vitrines/market part of the exhibition, will post it soon.

Don't know how you guys felt, but I was there when the arcade-room got closed down at the end of the day on sunday. (not on the saturday).

When the room was empty, I was overwhelmed with the feeling.....OK, now let my Eurocade/DLF friends in and let's game and party !!!

*IF* this event is ever going to return, for me this will be a must.

Saturday after public is gone, we have a nice (well arranged....) dinner at the Café and then head back up to game as we please until like 0.00hr and then move to the Hotel for drinks at the bar....

It's that, or Eurocade returns in it's old shape. I don't know yet. Don't want to think about it yet....really split by the success of RGE and the "cosy" atmosphere of being between Eurocade/DLF friends....both are great in their own way....

I agree. André, with 3000 paying visitors you have some good start for negotiations ;)

I'm very sure that this event, held let's say in 2 years, will draw the same ammount of people as it did this year...maybe even more, now that the word is spread.

I really felt kind of sad when the lights turned on and the games turned black on Saturday 17:15 (I had just started a game at Juno First). But it was just a short moment, then I was looking forward to spend the evening with my friends. Such a pity the hotel didn't have enough food for all of us  ;D  They better are prepared the next time!!

Finally I arrived home around midnight last night. ;)
Had some problems wit the dutch security guys, they wanted to see all the games working to be sure, that there are no other materials in the plastic cases. :o
I said "ok, here is an envelope with 60 batteries, let's start to check them all", they scared to death about the hassle and let me through in a second. ;D
About the event, it was a real blast, I really enjoyed to see people a big smile on their face when they played our games and stood front of the vitrines, I think we made a lot of people happy.
This Eurocade was not really about gaming for us, but finally  we had the chance to know each other much better and make nice conversations.
There were always small groups about 5-6 people (sometimes with a bier on their hands), you can joined them to chat with the "old diehards" and meet some new guys from our community.Personally, it was really nice to meet Patrick, Arch, Vond, Reboot and some new faces and I spent a lot of time with Erik, Marjan, Etienne, the Punkrock family, Dirk & Thorsten, André, Pieter and Ronald Reagan, we had a great time together.
The organization of Retro Gaming Experience was really great, big applause for the crew, you guys did a fabolous job. :spaceace:
The games were in very good shape and almost no technical problems, the Arcade Gods were with us this time. ;D
About the Donkey Kong contest, thanks for all your nice words, I really appreciate it. :spaceace:
To be honest (nobody belived me),  it was almost pure luck.
I've never had a DK pcb and I only played this game a few times at last 2 Eurocades and my Crazy Kong was not turned on the past 2 years. :D
My tactics was to watch lots of other people playing and learn from their mistakes.
By the way, the prize was donated with a help of Pieter to one of the Retroludix guys. ;)
The "thanksgiving section":
First of all congratulations for Pieter and his crew (Erik, Etienne, Chris, Robin, André, Ronald Reagan and the ones I forgot) to let his happen. :spaceace:
Huge thanks to Erik and Marjan for picking me up at the airport and taking me care for 3 days. :spaceace:
All of you who put the time, energy, money etc. to come  and took your cabs, games. :spaceace:
All of you who spent your time and have fun with me. :spaceace:
To Chris and his belgian squad, they made our sunday evening, I laughed my ass out. ;D ;D ;D
To Vond/Xentraz for the nice Videopac cartridges, all cases are a piece of art. :spaceace:
To Thorsten for the nice credit button stickers. :spaceace:
To Etienne for the great 80's music. :spaceace:
Pics soon. ;)

Thanks again for helping us so much loading the 6 cabs on Monday morning, Béla!

...and thanks also for volunteering in a heartbeat if ever a certain Belgian crew would have had to leave earlier than scheduled,... but then hesitated at the bar, then missed their train by one minute then met us at the restaurant, then got lost on the way back to the hotel, then had to call sick at work in the morning with a dying cellphone.  ;)

the DK highscore competition was so nice to follow, it had the real King of Kong atmosphere around it
it started out with a guy who immediately set sail for the cab on saturdaymorning at 10:00 and set the first high-score on the machine.
After that, 2 or 3 guys started swerming around the cab, trying to beat each others high-scores up and about the 15.000-19.000 points mark. They came back during the day, and checked each others scores, every time. One guy even admitted he practised upstairs on what he called the 'fake' donkey kong machine. And they made pictures of their initials on the screen. And then Anunaki showed up and blasted these guys score by 10.000 topping it to app. 30.000. The next day, the observing Belike, topped even that score. So nonchalant it was funny. Did you do one try only?

Furthermore, did anyone notice, that under almost every Eurocade/RetroGameExperience media article, those guys from the gaming-museum spammed the comments saying: if you cant make it, come to us blabla machines, 7 euro's etc etc. So sad in a way haha. I read that message I think more than 10 times on the internet.

Title: Re: Eurocade..2013 !
Post by: level42 on September 17, 2013, 04:32:14 PM
Yep, and it totally annoyed me.

I have invited the Bonami people way back for the very first Eurocade in person. We chatted at a retro computer fair they had organized and I told them about Eurocade and what it was all about and if they would like to come over and bring a cab or two. I even sent them an e-mail but never heard anything back in return.

Now they were one of the first to like our Eurocade facebook page and responded positively to a lot of pictures and stuff, which was great but they never contacted us about coming over and maybe bringing a cab or two......Sadly they also turned to "spamming" the Bonami museum without asking if it was OK. I wouldn't have mind a little going on for sure, the more retro game fun, the better....but this went silly....

On top of that, despite them having a special page on their website for events, they never listed Eurocade/Retro Game Experience....

Also, they didn't visit RGE. Of course that is their own choice, but if we would like to work in a friendly and collegial way, why not come over for a couple of hours, have some chats and all would be great.

Regretfully, they don't want to go that way. In fact, they spammed the Bonami museum once again after I posted some photo or video during/right after RGE. So I decided to delete that spam because they had reached my tolerance limit.

It is so sad. I have a feeling maybe they have some envy in some way, but I don't understand why. We should all team up together in this brilliant hobby. A one-off 2 day event is not going to hurt their permanent museum IMHO.

I have absolutely nothing against them, but I feel it is not decent, even a little pathetic, to try to pick up some attention for their museum by spamming on Eurocade/RGE subjects in all kinds of on-line forums and press sites.

Really too bad that the Eurocade organizers couldn't compete (at least I thought it wouldn't be fair). I should be able to reach a decent score like that in 5 minutes ;) ;) ;)

Béla, thanks for coming over the longest distance of all RGE visitors !!! And for bringing your AWESOME hand-held collection.
I phoned the security guys specially for you, but you countered them wisely for sure LOL !!!  :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Yeah, I tried it only once and died only once 10 seconds before the time was end. :D
To be honest, I just wanted to play for fun, never thought, that I will break Patrick's highscore. ;)

What you hear at the beginning is actually the attract mode of "accordion hero".
You know, that cab with a huge accordion on the control panel.

it was really nice to meet Patrick, Arch, Vond, Reboot

Likewise and thanks again for the pcb.

A big thanks for all the people who made this a great happening, liked it very much.

one small sidenote, sunday i stood in line with a few others for time crisis and a 16-20 year old kid was playing, and playing and playing, so after 20 min. or so i asked if he was planning to play the game till the end by endless continue's. yup that's what he planned  :(  so i quit the line and went to another cab.  :)

The only negative thing i came across those 2 days.

This really sucks. Of course there couldn't be someone standing besides each cab the whole day. But there was always at least one person around so you could have waved to him and the kid would have begged to leave the game after the next round. That's something I wanted to say, that I was impressed, that most of the people were fair enough to play one or two games and then leave for the next one....well, obviously they did not do it all  :-\

Yeah Reboot, we had a duty schedule to make sure at least one of us was always around to "police" the arcade hall ;)

In general I too was amazed seeing what Luigi describes, people were really social about it, definitely something special in today's "me" society.

There will always be exceptions of course and I wish you would have looked one of us up to mention the problem and we would have solved the issue in the nicest possible way by politely asking him to be a social person and if that wouldn't help he'd be kicked out MK2 style ! ;);)

We walked rounds as much as possible but sometimes it was a bit hard because of the busy floor.

The only things I had to do all weekend was ask two different people to remove their (closed) bottle from the Frogger (that's why cabs shouldn't have flat tops ;)), tell some kids and adults to stay behind the line near the Afterburner because we didn't want cut off fingers and one woman on Sunday morning who walked in with a cup of coffee in her hands. Al those things were easily and directly solved by simply kindly asking people and explaining why.

I heard likewise stories from my fellow "policemen" and we were all pretty amazed because we even discussed what to do if we'd get serious troublemakers (and had a scheme for that).

By the way, nice meeting you Reboot !!

Yes all other people were really social and played just 1 or 2 games so the next could enjoy it also, only this dude didn't. But maybe he liked the game so much so i didn't make a fuz about it, lots of other great cabs to enjoy

By the way, nice meeting you Reboot !!

Great meeting you in real, would have liked it to meet the other people, but i'm no fun and have little to talk about so didn't want to bother you or the others, only wanted to say goodbye and thank you for the great time i had when i had to go earlier than expected because work was calling me and the others weren't around.

Hi All,

I'm back from 2 days off and my head is still spinning after this marvelous weekend. :D I think i can say that the event has been a rollercoaster ride for the whole Eurocade Team, but the results are very satisfying. When we started this project, we set the goal to give the general public a taste of our great hobby and passion for Retro/Arcade gaming, and man did we reach that goal!  :) Not only did we get lot's and lot's of (good) press but we had a full house on both days. I'm very proud to be part of the Eurocade team and would like to thank all the members (Andre, Chris, Etienne, Robin & Erik) a lot for all the effort, sweat, some blood, (no tears) and fun times we shared with each other. Without you there wouldn't be an event!

Also, i would like to thank Nozomi, Retroludix, Magix Buttons, Shadaloo, Martijn Koch (aka Blanka), Belike, Ronald Reagan and all the other volunteers for helping out and delivering machines/consoles.

And last but not least thanks to everybody from DLF who participated, traveled miles and miles and of course let lot's of people enjoy their beautiful cabinets.

THANKS GUYS!!!

actually... i feel kind of sad today. this event was too nice and i would love to jump in my car again and drive to hilversum this saturday. meeting you guys was a blast. everything rocked and this community is probably the best bunch of people i have met since our days in the demo scene and the 16 bit game business. i am sure jochen feels the same and allthough mille and chris are not part of this forum they felt very comfortable. mille is going to get his first cab soon. on our way back he was thinking what to buy fir his first machine. :)

mission accomplished. one more person infected. thank you again for an amazing weekend. and to all the guys who did not make it to E13... please be at E14. it was worth every second.

Hi guys, Gravi here. Finally, after two weeks we are back home!  :) It is good to be home again, but we also had a great time at Eurocade 2013 / The Retro Game Experience.  :spaceace: :spaceace:

The first layer is bubble foil, the second shrink foil. I wish there was a little more environment friendly stuff we could use.

You can buy it in any Home Depot, Brico Hobby, you name it.
Just ask for the plastic rolls used to wrap pallets.

I have a heap of old wool blankets for that.

Post by: level42 on September 24, 2013, 11:37:54 AM
Yeah, I actually had a plan to stitch blankets together to make covers for the machines but was lacking time.

The trouble with loose blankets is that we had to store the machines in some areas in B&G where there were still people moving and working and we wanted them protected there too.

I still have this vision of making covers with strong canvas on the outside, and soft but firm stuff on the inside to really protect them from bumps etc. I must say the shrink wrap had one very positive effect during transport: we could put three upright machines next to eachother in the van, and where the machines touched eachother, shrink wrap really grabbed the other shrink wrap, thus making the cabs "bond" which prevented movement already. Of course we (actually, Erik, our load-master) also strapped everything, but it did help.

The factory that made the Retro Space shells also had a very smart way of packaging:
2 cabs back2back on a pallet. Then 3 bars of foam in between. The covered the edges with hard cardboard L-shape profiles and finally slightly wrapped the cabs in plain foil, not even bubble foil, mainly to keep the cardboard strips in place.
Unfortunately a transporter for an event was not so smart. They tied the cabs with the back to the side of the truck with spanner cables without something in between. That gave some costly re-paint jobs

I know that Gamma sell those bubblewraps (10m rolls or so), but didn't know they sell also the 100m rolls of them.

I got it from Paardenkooper Reboot

Isn't that for businesses only, like makro?

Do you guys wrap all your stored cabs up which are in an unheated shed or so, now that it's getting colder or just leave them be till spring when it's getting warmer again?
Do you play cab's in the winter when they are in an unheated shed? Just use a mobile heater when you wanna play?

I would NOT wrap them for storage. I would fear any moist would be kept inside. Without wrap the cab is at least able to "breath" out (and in...)

I have had my Centipede in unheated storage for some time and it survived OK. My SW cockpit has been in an unheated storage unit for 8 years (before I bought it) and well, you've seen it ;)

However, today I have heating in my gameroom. It doesn't need to be room temperature, it's just to keep mostly the moist outside (if any, my shed is well isolated). I use an oil-filled radiator that I bought through marktplaats. This is cheaper than electric blowers. However it is still a temporary solution for me. Of course when I'm in the room I turn it up, but turning on cabs also helps :)

Not to mention I got 120 points on my first (and only) try. Anunaki said that he believes that he can qualify for a Twin Galaxies high score, and with my lucky first round I'm starting to feel the same way.  I'm currently trying to find one in Scandinavia. And it must be a cocktail. :)

Wanna have a cool down from RGE / Eurocade? We do, that´s why Gyruss, Level42 and I will be present at Firstlook in Utrecht this weekend. Together with a handful of classic games.   :)

Let´s show those kids that it is all about gameplay, graphics come in second place. IMHO.  ;D ;D

About Firstlook, it is the little brother of Gamescon: http://www.firstlookevent.nl/

Yesterday I visited the famous travelling exposition Game On again (2.0 version this time) in Stockholm, and off course it is fun, but it made me realise how fantastic our Hilversum event was. It is no compare! They state it as the biggest game exposition or something like that, but it is nowhere close to what we did. We should realise that with some personal effort we manage to deliver a greater show than a multi-year running UK royal family sponsored 300000 ticket/event selling show!

Congrats to all!

I think key values to our show are:
- Massively cool arcade. At least twice as much machines in a very nice ambiance!
- Lots of fans to TALK with
- All original consoles running on TV's.
- Some shopping
- The Theater program to add extra depth.
- And so the ability to entertain almost a whole day instead of one hour with total awesomeness!

I visited GameOn in 2008 in London. Was nice, but most of the stuff was defective or missing.

Here's a video about part 2:
http://www.barbican.org.uk/bie/game-on

Seems they upgraded a bit.

@Blanka: Is the Stockhol event similiar to the video? if so - I go again to Sweden.

Otherwise you may want to visit the ZKM in Karlsruhe (and later the day retrogames e.V.) - there's currently an exhibition of PLAY in Germany:

It is the same as in the video. Funny they say it is in Ontario City as it was in Toronto (provice of Ontario).

As far as I saw all was working except one arcade, which is a good score.
With the handhelds you can tell the organisation is from the UK, mainly Grandstand games.

I personally liked the Brussels 1.0 one better, but that was because they co-operated with some Belgian schools and game networks to showcase locally produced games. Some of the nicest things I saw were Belgium projects like The Path. Also the cellars gave a nice atmosphere.

Oops, rooky mistake there:

Arcades are buildings in which large video and pinball and EM and redemption games are set-up for play.
Cabs, videogames, arcade games, machines are those machines inside an arcade.
