The game 'Galaxian3' was originally a theme park attraction in Japan for up to 28 people simultaneously in a hydraulic gaming area.
Let's have a look at this monster attraction also called 'GH-28' :P

there was two (possible to play by 28 people) Galaxian^3 in the world.
1st GH-28 (Osaka,JPN -> Tokyo,JPN) was removed scrapped in 2000 Mar.30,2001.
2nd GH-28 (Kanagawa,JPN) was removed in 1997.

these pictures are not GH-28. these are GM-16.
There is no GM-16 in Japan,too.
The last GM-16 (Himeji,JPN ) was removed on Mar,2003

Galaxian3 is a cult game in Japan, and the most of informations about it are mostly ... in Japanese :-\ which is good for you, but so sad for us, guys outside Japan :?

If I'm correct, The diameter of largest circle in the figure(of GH-28), the cylindrical screen, was 12m diameter.

Maybe you don't know, but there is NO information at all anywhere on the web regarding the GH-28 in English (except few words on wikipedia...). All the articles I can found on the web are... in Japanese :? ...and it's even the same problem regarding the GT-6 :'(

It has 16 projectors that need of course 16 images sources...so 16 laser disc players...and so 16 video laser discs with different footage on them ?!
Does the GH-28 played the mission "Project Dragoon", like the version we play on the GT-6 ?
I'm asking the question from an other point of view : Does the mission 'Project Dragoon' as we know on GT-6 is a small part of the GH-28 footage ?
There was only two GH-28 in the world (thanks to Tom#2-JP for the confirmation). Do you remember the price of a single play ? I suppose the GH-28 wasn't a 'free access' game ? I mean there wasn't any coins door like the GT-6 ? It was like a ride, in an attraction park ?!
If it's a kind of 'ride', does the time of the game was always the same ? I mean what happen if all the players don't play very well ? Game over after only few minutes ?

Let me answer your questions as I can.

yes. but as I know, there was no 16 variations in discs but 2 or so on. they were playing different "chapters".

Yes, the story was "Project Dragoon", but there was some difference between that of GT-6"M8774D" and GH-28 "M8774E"/GM-16"M8774C".
M8774E and C was almost the same. I've heard that the 1'st version (1990, OSAKA)"M8774B" was different from "M8774E", but I don't know that one.
Differences:
1. No "Destroy the air post" mission in M8774E.
2. 4 Major targets was located in the enemy mothership. One was the main reactor, as you know on GT-6, and other 3 fixed targets (I don't know what that was exactly). "Tower Cannons" grow out :) inside the mothership.
3. No "Tower Cannons" on the enemy planet .
4. No mission failure due to loss of "shield".
5. No "lateral duct" burst through mission, and therefore, DRAGOON locates in just the center of citcle of "Spark Bits".
5. "Sparkbits" (spell may be not correct) was not 6 but 16.
6. "Sparkbits" move from left to right and they go round only once. So if you are the only player, you "must" destroy all "Sparkbits" in only "one chance".
7. "Ending movie" was short. The last scene was the explosion of the enemy planet (if they failed, DRAGOON try to break out but vanished in the ray of "CANNON SEED", and "white out".
8. No detail1 score report. Only "ranking" (A to E, "A" was the best) and "TOP GUN" ("GOLD EMBLEM":stylized gold dragon or so on),
"No. 2" (SILVER EMBLEM), No.3 (BRONZE EMBLEM).

500yen(GH-28)/300yen(GM-16) a game (and admission fare, sometimes).
There was "Passport" system supported in "Wonder Eggs" (except very early time of the park), it was 3,900 yen a day (includes admission) / 3,000 yen (night-time discount).

1. Fail to destroy the enemy mother ship if players don't play well.
2. If fail to destroy 16 "Sparkbits" within timelimit almost 20sec. , just game over that I mentioned above.

0.49 surface of the planet.
1.53 This is most interesting. Dragoon goes to inside the Cannon Seed. The core is totally different. The main gate is always open and there is no another way in.

The "mission code" of GH-28 was "M8774D" ("E" is for GT-6 :oops:).
The movie from somewhere looks like the demonstation movie of GM-16. It's some kind of "remix", but
the source of movie seems to be almost same from that of GH-28.

"TOP GUN" "No. 2" "No.3" that I mentiond is just the additional comment. No display nor voice of such in the game.

Let's see the difference between the GT-6 version and that GM-16 or GH-28 footage ?
The launch sequence :
In the GT-6 version, just after leaving the base (Killing Moon) you can see the beacons (triangle shape) until entering the hyper speed sequence :

The Red Valley :
In the GT-6 version, while entering in the valley, your ship is immediately very close to some canyons/ mountains :arrow:

In the other version, you seems to be more far from the mountains/canyons and there are some new structures on the screen, never seen on the GT-6 version :

...and I presume theses structures cannot be destroyed because they are on the laser disc, not computer generated ?

Except these blue tubes, the footage look similar on picture 1+3, and the same for 2+4. I presume all the 16 players or 28 players see the same footage at this point ? Blue tubes was just the background. Footage ???..(background;inside view of the huge cannon). I've never mind that.

Yes, it looks like a promotional video. But why ? Certainly not to promote the GH-28 because no arcade operator can be interested by such monster ??? So maybe it's a promotional for the GM-16... but why never show the structure and a full overview of the ride ???
I really don't know why NAMCO has done this video :-\ ?
As we see on the youtube video, the quality of the image is very clean. So that video shouldn't come from a home recording device. The person who uploaded it should have a good/original source... but which one ???

It is said that it will cost 3-400,000,000 JPY(≒1,960,000-2,620,000 EUR) , excluding the land acquisition cost.
I wonder whether rebuilding G3 is a dream though it is very regrettable......

Great job you're doing there nuno. I am just so grateful for you and our japanese members here on the forum, for your dedication and sharing all that info about these fantastic giant attractions, which I would have totally missed out on if it weren't for you guys.
Being located high up in Europe's northern, colder, regions I never had the opportunity to actually try either of these large 'space shooting theaters'. I once encountered the smaller 4-player Galaxian3 on a holiday in Paris, but it had the background scenery missing.

Super clip, thanks! I love the pilot's gloves, three different watches integrated in his glove there.
About the "4-player Galaxian3", I am positive that it wasn't the original konfiguration. But there were only four seats and four guns. Also the entrance I think was a bit modified because there was only one, not two. I guess that they had rebuilt it to fit in the smaller location. I remember that I was very thrilled about it, seeing it almost directly as I entered the arcade. But when I noticed that the background graphics wasn't there I understood that it wasn't fully functional.

Wow, namco must have spent some on the luxury inside the G3 28-player theatre. I just noticed you have these small indicator screen with 'power', 'shield' and stuff displayed next to your gun at each station.
But what I gather from the video the total game play is only around 3 minutes, that's excluding any instructions and end credits. Is this correct?
Also, from looking at the flyer/promo the whole 'theatre' seems supported by a single rotating collumn, so it's a moving platform. Kind of like the Galaxy Force deluxe machine. What puzzles me, because it seems to be a solid disc platform, is how the game play proceeds when one side of the platform inclines (platform is able to incline as well as rotate, based on the drawing in the flyer), how does it affect the players on the other side of the theatre? When one side tilts down, the opposite side tilts up (?)
So based on these physical facts, all players sit in the 'space ship' which is equiped with a multi-gunner (circular shaped) gun-tower .. sort of?

Also, I notice that the 28-player theathre has only flat shaded, non-textured polygons. Now I am inspecting the flyer again, and it seems like a mega-version of Starblade. Not Galaxian³ at all, but rather 99% Starblade.
The player filming this latest clip, it seems his view is to the rear of our gun-ship. Because at the start of the game he is launched backwards. Right? (I guess this moment is when the platform tilts slightly to simulate launching acceleration .. )
And, watching the clip I can see only what seems to be real-time rendered plygons. Both small targets and larger enemy flag ships are flat shaded polygons. And the planet explosion at the end is also very much like in Starblade.
Shouldn't the 28-player theatre infact be called "Starblade 28-player theatre" instead of "Galaxian³"?
Or, to be correct, perhaps the large theatre should be called Starblade, and what was released as "Starblade" in 1992 should infact be "Starblade - single player version", or simply "Starblade: Geosword"?

I got my chance to play G3 in Namco's "WONDER EGG" Park late 99 / early 2000 (not sure if it was GH-28 though, I need to dig out some photos, if I can find them). I did even win some sort of small metal pin for my jacket, with the G3 logo on it, as I had the highest score among the players in my turn (which does not make me a great player, but rather serves as an indication that the others sucked at G3 as well ;) ). Too bad I have no idea where this one went to, though.

I think I found a bit more information about that Galaxian3 attraction. The Game Engine they used for Galaxian3 Attraction could possibly be the Borland Program "Delphi 7" that Namco might have used to create this game, as shown in this image:

Notice the numbers on top right. It appears to be the number of frames for the whole length of the laserdisc. That can be said for the Galaxian3 28-player version. Also the one on the left of the frame number, It could either be the variation number or it could be the chapter number for the 16 screens. Regardless however, The laserdisc footage appears exactly the same.

Delphi 7 is actually a coding language, released long after Galaxian 3 and widely used even to this day. It is likely this person coded his video replication in Delphi, and used it to code the projection system.

One thing that makes me curious though. While there's the 28 player audio on the OST, It also seems to include "Scenario Version 3.01β" from whatever it is from. Probably from an animation or just a Drama Audio (In which the audio track of a certain episode is heard or In which it's different from audio tracks now in episodes).

Update: I'm sort of bugged out right now. The GALAXIAN3 Project Dragoon and Attack of the Zolgear videos (Except for Camera-recorded videos and Rising of gourb) are "Not available in your country"! Both full and parts of laserdisc, even the PSX gameplay of Project Dragoon. The videos are still there though. I know this isn't related to this topic, but I thought this was worth mentioning, since apparently, Victor Entertainment and other companies control which videos can be viewed in whatever country..

Apparently, MobileHackerz is using the Oculus Rift to demonstrate the gunner's POV of the 28-player video, and since that was 4 years after we saw it from 2010, this means that the LD Rip still exists, and we're not the only ones trying to bring it back to life.

All those pictures from Wonder Egg III made me finally search for my own photos from my visit to the park. Unfortunately, it seems I didn't take too many pictures, or I've lost them long ago. I only found one of me in the WONDER EGG arcade, and, somewhat unrelated, one of me in front of the NEO GEO WORLD main entry (which, eventually, also closed down the year after my visit). But these photos of that 16-player attraction are that of higher quality than the ones we found, and the photos were posted just this early in march. The wikipedia doesn't list it, but it's also possible that the attraction might have reopened secretly. If that attraction has truly reopened and the rom for 16-player still exists, then... there's still time to save it.
And if the rom exists, and all LDs are ripped, then we're not alone.

That stage is also on Tekken Tag Tournament. There is another Wonder Eggs stage, titled Carnival, on Tekken 3.

I have played Ridge Racer Type 4, but I hadn't noticed the G3 in it because I don't pay much attention to the scenery.
I recognised the Ridge Racer Type 4 logo in the bottom right of that picture.
So I Googled "Brightest Nite", which is what's written bottom centre of that picture. It turns out that "Brightest Nite" is the track name.
From there, I went to YouTube to find a video of that track. :)
EDIT: If you watch all of that video, you can spot more "Wonder Eggs 2" and Galaxian stuff. ;)
Do any of you own Ridge Racer Type 4? Maybe you can drive around the track yourself and take photos/screenshots.

Contents of the Brochure next week. Considering Namco, judging from that tweet alone, is apparently starting to acknowledge its existence even more (they released Galaxian3 PSX port on Japan PSN store) a PC port may very well be possible.
Let's all just cross our fingers and hope it's true. ;)
Note: A few more images are pictures of the Brochure's ENTERTAINMENT page, Though still far from that "next week" message they mentioned. I still wonder what that means, if it could be theater 6... Or better, a 16/28-player Version.

I think the UGSF link at the bottom of the Arcade Game Series website is just there because Galaxian/Galaga are part of the UGSF timeline...it would still be neat if they at least put Starblade in that though.
