Title: Dragon's Lair reproduction laser disc
Post by: Giddygoon on May 17, 2008, 09:51:35 PM
A question that has bugged me for a long time  - who found the lost prototype footage? And where is it now?

Maybe Digital Leisure own it? But will they ever re-master it?

I wrote them an email asking that question....... but don't think i'll get an answer!

If anybody here can shed some light on the prototype footage that was on Dragon's Lair reproduction laser disc that was pressed in 2002 Let me know, but I can't find any more info from D.L.P

Cheers,

Giddygoon

Well, Digital leisure did get back to me with this answer:

Hi John,

Thanks for your email.

Currently there are no plans to re-master the proto-type footage as most
felt it was to degraded for a capable restore. However, I will certainly
pass along your request to those that make the final decisions.

So they have the footage but who gave it to them??????

Digital Liesure are Partners of Dragon's lair LCC, Company owners are... Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, Rick Dyer, and David Foster Owner of Digital Liesure, I am sure your reply did not come from David.

Gary and Don had the prototype footage at the Bluth Studios, Man that place was awesome, Don and Gary Invited me to thier Studio in Arizona, which I accepted of course, I was like a kid in a candy store, I went through every background that was made for Dragons lair, there were boxes upon boxes, I even found a few collectibles that I have never seen, There was rows of storage racks, each row maybe 50 feet long and 15 feet high full of Cels and BG's for each film, even the Original Film reels, truly awesome, I literally had a pick of any Cel and BG (Background) I wanted!!
Unfortunatly some time after all the stuff went to the "Savanah Art college" I was shown the story boards for the Planned Dragons Lair Movie, I just wish I had taken more pictures!!
I dont know if Don and Gary had the Prototype footage back? My guess is that Digital Liesure have them in their hands, I am certain the Footage will be used again.

Gary Goldman told me today that Don Bluth wanted to Animate the Deleted Pirate scene from Dragons lair 2, now this would be great, especially if the DL2 annivesary comes off that I have planned, The Partnership has already gave me a Licence agreement. so fingers crossed.

Hi Finny!

You are a very lucky man to have seen all of that original material! There is also that gargoyles scene in Dragons Lair proto-type that could be finally animated too! All the sketches exist for the scene but it was never colored of filmed!

The question came up because I have Dragons lair HD......and it looks so good that I started to wonder weather Digital leisure were going to re-master the Proto-type footage, which I love!

I see you actually own a cell of Dirk getting speared in the Giddygoons scene from the Proto-type footage

Come on Digital Leisure re-master the Proto-type footage!

It is the Genesis of a huge legacy that is Dragons lair

It must be saved!!!

This is for you Giddygoon, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330236083701&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D330236083701%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1
it's not just an Original Cel, it also includes the original Background, Backgrounds are where the money is, they normally cost at least $1000, so $450 for the cel set-up and BG it a givaway, I think it works out about £230.

Nice One Finny,

I didn't know that the gargoyles scene was actually painted, I wonder weather it was actually shot??? I still dream that this scene and the Proto-type footage scenes will be put back together and re-masted

maybe a special Edition 2008 laser disc or even blu-ray

As for the Cell way out of price range........Are you gonna go for it Finn?

Hmmm is this EBay seller, mycelspace, another alias for Van Eaton Galleries?

They have this cel up for sale
http://cgi.ebay.com/SPACE-ACE-DON-BLUTH-CEL-KEY-MASTER-B-G-ACE-VIDEO-GUARDS_W0QQitemZ330239652062QQihZ014QQcategoryZ1371QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.com/SPACE-ACE-DON-BLUTH-CEL-KEY-MASTER-B-G-ACE-VIDEO-GUARDS_W0QQitemZ330239652062QQihZ014QQcategoryZ1371QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Which is also on VE website
http://vegalleries.com/bluth4.html#spa (http://vegalleries.com/bluth4.html#spa)
http://vegalleries.com/bluthspecial/spaceace/096.jpg (http://vegalleries.com/bluthspecial/spaceace/096.jpg)

So are they the same person, 'cause the EBay verison is nearly half the price, or did VE Galleries off load lots of their cels?

Cheers

As far as I know, the so called "prototype footage" which is present on the 2002 reprinted 3M laserdisc cannot be remastered in HD or even another format just because the original master is long gone. The footage comes from a VHS tape of the Starcade TV show which hosted the Dragon's lair prototype machine back in 1983. Don Bluth & C only preserved the original master film of the official production disc.
The story is too long to tell here and I don't know all the details. Basically three different laserdisc were created for three prototyping machines and, after some field tests, the final decision was taken and only 1 disc made it to production.

Giddygoon,

I have a Cel similar from the gargoyle Scene, so decided not to go for it, however I have purchased 6 pieces of art from them this week, the price is cheap, most of my Cels with Backgrounds were over $1000, some of my Pan Backgrounds cost over $2500!! so to buy the standard size for $450 was cheap as chips!! Bluth/Goldman would have paid their artist double that to paint the backgrounds back in the day.

Dazza,

I dont think "my Cel Space" (Jessica&Alan) is Van Eaten, its like Personalised Number plates...there are half a dozen companies advertising the same plates, I think this is the same case? I tell you what guys, if you are interested in cels and BG's, get them now, there are only a few floating about, because as you know the remaining artwork has been donated to the "savanah art college" so when the surplas has gone...they are gone for good.

Definately not many "good" cels left.

I got my eye on one of those Space Ace cels, I take it they ship to the UK even though it's not listed on EBay. Which ones did you get Finny?

Dazza,

Great cels mate, your have to bring them to the Euromeet.

Normally cel's come up with Laser Copy backgrounds, so it is easy to pick the best cels, however, these cels for sale have the original BG's, now thats where it is more difficult to decide, the BG's are way more expensive than the Cels, so it a matter of buying one with a lot of detail in the BG, like your Space Ace Cel Dazza, not actually going for the best could be the best bet with these ones, personal preference though of course.

I'll definately bring them along to EuroMeet to show them off  ;D

I was taking special care with the choice based on background (The Space Ace one is a gem!). However, all the dragon's lair ones left for sale are a bit plain, so I just went for the exciting scene.

I am still really pi$$ed off I never got that lair scene with Dirk inserting the key and that reaper scene.....grrrrr

Daz,

They made a mistake by listing them, I have purchased all 51 pieces they have left from Dragons lair, I am a true Dragons Lair Fan at the end of the day, there are a few Space Ace images I like, they will just have to wait, Space Ace has to play second fiddle to Dragons lair I am afraid.

Well I may not have got 51 pieces but my 2 arrived through the other day and I am WELL pleased! I'll stick a few piccies up when I get a chance. There is definately something magical about viewing the original cells... Part of history!

Jas, I look forward to seeing your new batch  ;D

Hey everyone.

I thought I would step in and just correct some the information on the "lost footage" on the DLE discs since I was the one who made them.

There are a number of different versions of prototype discs that were produced in the early days of Dragon's Lair.  All of the discs are accounted for except the first one that was produced for an amusement show which I believe was held in Chicago.  The footage on the disc was important as it contained footage and scenes that were later cut or changed when the game was reworked.  The original intention was to have multiple choices withing some rooms, but due to slow laserdisc seek times, the game was too choppy to watch and it was revised to only one right path per scene.  There was speculation that this disc may be sitting in Rick Dyer's prototype DL game in storage, but not likely (unfortunately).

There was a game show in the 80's called Starcade where kids would compete on video games and the winner would have a chance at winning a brand new arcade game.  Dragon's Lair was brand new and to hype the show, a 1" copy of the 1st generation prototype disc was sent to the show's producers for promotional purposes.  This footage sat in the archives of the producer's for years.  In 2001, someone from one of the gaming magazines or blogs was interviewing the producer of Starcade when he happen, by chance, to show the footage to the interviewer.  Having the thought that this may be interesting footage, he requested a VHS copy.  This footage made its way to Jeff Kinder who posted the information on his DLP site in 2001.

In 2002 when I was making the DLE discs, I paid the producers of the show for a copy of this footage so it could be added to the end of the standard disc information.  Don Bluth and Gary Goldman didn't have any of these discs or footage from them.  The footage contained scene boards and color bars as well as the colorful running Dirks which I ended up having edited out due to space constraints (the DLE disc is almost 31mins of info on a 30min disc).  In addition, the order of scenes was altered to ensure the "lost scenes" would all fit on the disc.  The ropes scene was not changed from the original prototype and I had it edited to the end of the disc in case the players couldn't read that far.  I also added the title narative to the audio as it was not on the footage.  So the copy I had was a 1" copy of a 1" tape which was likely a copy of a laserdisc which is a copy of the master (so at least 4th generation.)

I sent 6 beta copies to Rick Dyer for review.  Rick was watching the video one evening when he realized that the cut scenes were now added to my discs and called me immediately.  Rick requested that I send my 1" copy to them for archival purposes which I then did.

I hope this clears up some of your questions regarding the footage.

Mike

Before I start everyone, Mike knows everything about Dragons lair, and is one of only a few people I consider to be a big part of keeping DL alive!!

Mike,

How have you been my friend, your name is still down in my will for Serial #1 if I should peg-it!!

Its great to hear from you, hope everything is going well for you, the community is not the same as it was almost 10 years ago when it was booming with new collectors and interest in our hobby!!

Mike another question about the DLE discs....what happened to all the discs that 1 guy pre-ordered to make the project work, its seem's criminal now how cheap you sold the Disc's, I remember one that fetched over $400, I use mine in my Cinematronics machine with Daves Roms.

Hope to see a lot more of you.
