Title: Sympathy For The Devil: The DLF Candy Cab Topic
Post by: gyruss on October 04, 2012, 08:55:43 PM
I know lot's of people on this great board hate them but they are a part of the arcade lifestyle, so let's talk about them..  :D

Two years since visiting Japan i finally got myself a candy cab. It's a Taito Egret2 with a tri sync monitor that was owned by Ckong (thanks mate) and the cab is in excellent condition. I'm very happy with the machine, it's the perfect way for me to experience newer (Jamma) games and Mame. Also a big plus is that i can connect a dreamcast to it.  ;D

Erik was so nice to lend me one of his boards, the game is called ESP. Ra. De. it's a cave shooter and pretty hectic but once you get the hang of the game mechanics it's totally brilliant. I love the music, gameplay and spectacular effects! Here are some photo's (some made by Erik) of the cabinet:

Very nice Pieter, and welcome to the Candy cab world, you will love it.  :)
It was difficult for me to let this cab  go, it really is in great shape with a perfect monitor. But as you could see yesterday, I´m out of space. Fortunately I still have a few other Candy´s to play on

And yes, Esp.Ra.De is a great game, difficult, but great, I hope that you enjoy it and there is no rush in getting it back. .

I hope that we soon can visit the NGC in Zoetermeer, more Candy to play with over there. And great guys to talk with.

And just out of curiosity, which DLF members do actually own one or more Japanese Candy cabs?

Gyruss does (duh).
I do, 3x.
Psykick does, more then one (of course)  :)
Elpancho has a whole row of them.
Punkrockcaveman?
.....

Anyone more? Don´t be embarrassed, come out of the closet.  ;D

Post by: Dazza on October 05, 2012, 11:48:57 AM
what games do you play on it?

Everything...

Currently have it horizontal with Green Beret loaded (Jamma+ competition). Lots of Final Fight, Bubble Bobble 2, TumplePop and The Simpsons recently, mainly because the kids love those ones.

Had a long stint vertically with Twin Cobra in it (until I managed to loop it).

Get the boys round and shove Tekken 2 and SF2T in there. It is the perfect machine for 2 player fighters.

What I really need to do is finally get off my ass and put my rotary sticks on my spare CP and get some Ikari Warriors going on.

They are indeed the official LS-30 rotary sticks. I got a pair of NOS ones from a member on Jamma+ a couple of years ago.

These ones (not actually the ones I own):

By the way, why are all the P1 buttons and joystick blue, the P2 buttons purple but joystick blue ? I mean either everything should be blue (which would be much nicer IMHO) or the P2 joystick should also be

Candies are not my taste aesthetically but they are the one and only way to experience cave shooters + they are really convenient low maintenance machines compared to my other "old guys".
For all these reasons, I'm sure I'll get one one of these days, congrats Gyruss!

Coincidentally, my girlfriend offered me this morning a japanese candy!
It's a japanese Kit Kat with a light green tea flavour and it's delicious.
Guys, I think this is a sign from The Arcade GodsTM....

Small update: Erik was so nice to lend me another game, it's called Ibara and its pretty spectacular. The art/ graphics are awesome and the music rocks, the only bad thing is the insane difficulty but maybe that's just my lack of cave shooter skills.

Here's a clip so you guys can see why they call it a bullet hell shooter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kSHBTGJvWk&sns=em

I also got holder with a sf4 marque from Erik, thanks mate!

This is getting out of hand.....we need some REAL arcade machines, those you need to restore with wood filler, have to sand and paint, need to put nice artwork on, need to fix the monitor and PCB off and not those lazy plastic machines without any real artwork that the worst work you have to do on is running a damp cloth over....sigh.....Where is Ully when you need him for another magical "restore from the ashes" ??

Ok.....Im guilty and need to get on with some projects too......now what do I need ?  Hmmmmm TIME !

Had to work today and just arrived home.....There goes half the weekend again.....tonight a birthday party, tomorrow another one.....sigh sigh sigh.....

No. You can get them at ebay. They come withh a chain because they are supposed to hang. Just remove the chain, place the acryl sign the other way round in the light unit and voila, you have a 'topper'. They are great for in a gameroom.

But you kinda must like the crazy taxi marquee, don't you? That's still a naomi candy cab, so i have good hopes we can welcome you to our special club in the future.  ;D ;)

But that Crazy Taxi isn't a candy right ? It's metal, it's upright (not sit-down, OK, there is a "butt-support" on the racers sometimes but it's a full-height machine), it doesn't have gay colored buttons and joysticks....

O well whatever, I probably am going to try some candies soon.....let me go there open minded, well as open minded as I can be. Ad you're right, they are arcade machines, I didn't meant that that way....:)

Oh and I love that fat bass speaker...been thinking about mounting something like that inside mynSW cockpit seat....:)

Just posting something so my avatar shows up.

Just finished a run on Ibara (baby blue side ;-) ) Perfect 20 minute adrenaline rush, which I find very comfortable to blend in with my busy real life madness.
Why is it prefect....because Cave hits the nail hard when it comes to the core property *every* game should have: a perfect risk/reward balance.

Pieter, enjoy mastering those Cave games for the rest of your life. You'll still love your 80's cabs, it's just you'll be playing them less and less and .... ;-)

lol,

Woodies and candies can co-exist :)  As mentioned above they are just neon sega signs bought off ebay and hot glued to the back, i like them, just about the one thing im not keen on candys is the plastic official type marquees.

I like the candys for sf3 4 etc and a vert candy with a cave shmup is just pure joy! These days i find myself playing cave on the vert more then anything.

dedicateds, generic woody jammas, candies, are all welcome in my house!

Naahhh, I don't think that one is actually mounted. These ashtrays "float around" in Japanese arcades, I actually got a nice Namco one here....thanks to a fellow forum member :)

It's a good thing to hold screw and stuff :)

That machine has no style and way to busy "artwork" that screams all over the place....I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Chinese fake candy...but apparently it isn't ?

I definitely like the looks of a standard candy much better..

It is nice to see guys talking about Candy stuff here, with pro and cons opinions. The pro opinions seem to be more present though.

I must say that I don't like the Otomedius cab that much either, not because of the cartoon boobies, which are just as fake as most 'real' ones of that size, but it's just too busy. I like the plain white candy's with a bit of side art much better.

I've played the cab in Japan, the gameplay is pretty old school and it has a touchscreen, which was sort of cool 2.5 years ago..

Kinda like the weirdness of it but i wouldn't call it beautiful..... although the lights next to the screen are nice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olhGaqFpINk

A few weeks ago Erik was so nice to lend me another game, this time it's a horizontal side scrolling shoot 'em up by Japanese developer Cave, with the name Deathsmiles!

Again, it's a pretty crazy Japanese game and i totally love it, especially the bosses! Here's a review of the xbox port: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zrhtSrcTyc

Got to say the Egret is getting a lot of play, i'm definitively not regretting buying it...  ;D

Fantastic game. You'll have a brilliant time once the scoring mechanism "clicks" with you. Even the sequence of the paths (stages) you select is important. For a good score that is ...

If it wasn't for both Espgaludas this would be my favorite Cave title.

Enjoy!

guess the system hasn't clicked with me yet because my score is terrible ;)

I'll plug in Erik's neo geo motherboard with multi card this weekend and will start practicing my Metal Slug skills...

Thanks again for lending me all those great games Erik!
