Once upon a time, I got an email from a member who told me he was looking for a good home for his boy. He didn't have time anymore for that one...and knew that the Nuno's Lair is one the best 'arcade orphanage' around!
Well, you can guess I can certainly help him on this... my arms are still wide open for a big boy like that!
So in no time, I prepare my horse and usual things for a such adventure...
Oh well...yes... the pictures... well, sorry... this road trip has been done long time ago, and the they faded with time/sun, sorry about this!
Well, I'm on schedule this morning... but at the last minute, I discovered the result of the 'Navigation Car System' last use by Darth Nunette
No time to find back the iron soldier, and other tools to repair the cable... let's try to leave anyway...
Damn it! It doesn't charge anymore! :-X
Ok, let's charge the map / road instruction in my beloved iPad...a premiere to have it in my car, because I only use it in Wifi (no 3G in this one) :
Guess what? I also don't have the adapter to charge the Ipad in my car! Ok, like the good fashion time, let's take a good old school paper map, just in case! ;D
As you can see, it's not gonna be a long road trip this time...only 134km to go :
To add in my all time 'Road Tripper' km/time counter ;D
Let's Cow...
...In my country... Yeah, I'm a cow boy after all today :D
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/sheriff/Sheriff_Nintendo_RT9.jpg)
I'm very happy! Who say no? Well, let's say I'm hyper focused!
What? Rain in far west? Oh wait, I'm just in the far South of Heaven Belgium!
Ah OK, a cow! I'm back on track in this Western story ;D
Head to Esneux... a special town for me...
...a lot of childhood memories here...
I hate this : My Nav' Car says 'straight away', while there is a no entry sign!
And here we are. The seller owns few cabinets... but I'm here for this ... Nintendo Sheriff :-* :-* :-*
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/sheriff/Sheriff_Nintendo_RT16.jpg)
He shows me the inside...
100% complete, not unfortunately not working...
After a nice welcome from him and his wife (also nice chat and nice coffee), it's time to load the beast in the car...
You can see the additional wheels on its back ... useful on a such beast, believe me!
Bye bye, and thanks again to give me the care of this beautiful cabinet :-*
For the way-back, I've to drive into the down town of Esneux... As I said, a special town for me...
...we went here, one of my first excursion with school ... I was about 10-12 years... I clearly remember walking here with school friends...

I'm not the only one to play with old toys :P OK, my toys are not so expensive than things like (Wait! What if we add up the price of all our 'toys ::)')

Back at home...it's still the morning in the country :
Trip : Belgium only!
Total length : 4h02min - 270 km on the road
No time to unload the cabinet right now...'till then, nobody pass here!

Wow very very very nice !!! I LOVE that cabinet !!! Once upon a time in the West....no actually very far south....I saw one of these for sale in Austria. I had just started in this hobby and decided it was WAY too far to pick it up. The last thing I saw of that one was that it was on a porch somewhere in Italy on a picture made by Ully.
I sooooooo love that side art that make it looks like it's made out of planks (ding-ding-ding....Etienne, I hear a bell ringing for a next project ;) ;))
The good thing about that is that any damage on the top or bottom just make it look more authentic ;)
Really hope it's an easy fix !!
Great pics (as always !)
-
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
Very cool 8)!
-
Nice one dude !
I like the style of the cab too, and indeed, maybe the next project can be this ;D
Luckily your Tomtom is just a USB cable, thats an easy fix / replacement ;)
-
WOW Very nice cab ! :P
-
So there are still some nintendos hidden in Belgium!
I knew it ;D
Excellent roadtrip/catch/shot: Hyyyyhaaa!
-
Cool cab !!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
excellent catch, nice pics in style, one word: awesome
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Nice catch! Someone find me one :spaceace:
-
such a beautiful cabinet!
Is this the one that one in the for sale section a year ago?
-
Thanks guys. I'm still surprised to find some gems like that nowadays, hidden in Belgium ;)
Is this the one that one in the for sale section a year ago?
Nope, the seller never advertised it.
I don't remember having see a Nintendo's Sheriff for sale here or even somewhere else? Maybe you confuse with the exidy's Bandido cabinet, recently advertised here? (After Sheriff's release by Nintendo, it was licensed to Exidy for re-release as Bandido)
-
The good thing about that is that any damage on the top or bottom just make it look more authentic ;)
Yes! It's maybe the only cabinet, if damaged, who still look great ;D
Ok, let's unload the beast now. Good news, the pictures are not faded this time ;D
My usual method to unload cabinet alone :

Love every inch of it ! :)
-
Love it! :spaceace:
Are the nail heads silkscreened on the side panels?
-
Somebody has to scan this artwork for future generations. AFAIK it's all simply printed and thus fake.....although I really couldn't tell by any of the pics I have seen so far...
-
Wow!!! Congrats Bruno, very nice! :-* :-* :-*

I seem to recall an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto that they came across that paneling somewhere and thought it would be great for the game's theme. I'll see if I can't dig that back up.
EDIT:
Miyamoto:
When we made Sheriff, I drew pixel images with another designer and we started searching for materials for the machine’s housing. We would talk about wanting to make a new unit that was like no other one in the world. So we even went to a company that did the interior of airplanes.
Iwata:
The interior of airplanes?
Miyamoto:
This company could make wood grain prints that looked like natural wood. So we bought these stickers and attached them to the cabinet and made it look like an old American saloon. At any rate, back then, I was doing all of the design from the content of the game to the housing.

See.....that's what brilliance is about....going that extra mile :)
Isn't it great to have some of the very first things Miyamoto worked on Bruno ?
Apart from it being a fabulous looking cab, this makes the machine extra special IMHO.
Thanks for digging that up Ataritoobin !
-
What a beautiful beautiful looking machine, really like the sideart!!!!!!
Great roadtrip, great pictures, awesome arcade game = über-cool!!! :spaceace: :spaceace:

Totally agree, it's a real museum piece.
-
You certainly find some rare and very nice machines dude :)
Luke has the last one I saw in the UK, very very different style cab though
-
Yes, very happy to catch that one! Mostly the one missing in all Nintendo cabinets rows I've seen in pictures ;D
I didn't check that cabinet since the road trip. Obviously there will be some work on the control panel... :?

I think i have 'rotary button' for you ;)
Wow, yes that may work! Very interested of course! :-*

PM me your adres and i send it to you for free

PM sent :-* :-* :-*
I got that button from the seller, not really accurate but it was better than nothing...

Hope the one from Robinholland will be better! 8)

Unfortunately it doesn't fit at all! :'( Too small :?

Damn :'(

Too bad but I wonder if that switch inside the panel is the original at all, it is so freaking huge ....

Saw this pic on a Japanese auction site for a coin changer. Nice shelf :'( :-\

...and back on this. That one is still waiting its turn in my 'half repair area"
It's time to plug that cabinet and see what's wrong, but first, a rapid visual inspection. First, the identity of that cow boy!
Inside...wow... the boards are really clean :-*
The 'double board' game pcb :
The sound board :
The monitor on its back, behind the metal plate :
And finally the power supply :
Ok, let's plug the cow boy for the first time
As expected, not working! :-\
At power on, there is the typical Nintendo sound/cry, almost the same than what you can hear when powering a DK or DK jr for example! Presuming the board is still alive somehow?
But not activity on the screen. Tried to credit the game, start a game... but there's absolutely no reaction on screen and not even a single sound?! As I said, the only sign of life is the 'screaming' sound at power on.
Next step, check all the voltage from the power supply, and check all the wirings...
There no test mode apparently?
-
Yes, i would start by measuring the volages to the board first
-
Ok, let's measure ALL the voltages in there!
Well, everything looks good to me. I don't think a 4,8V instead 5V should really be a problem?
Also checked all the cables, they are all connected.
So the problem should be on the PCB side? Possibly the monitor too? Because I see no activity, absolutely nothing.
The only 'sign of life' is the typical 'scream/sound' during the power on
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/sheriff/sherifftube.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9n9fexW0eE)
(at approx 24 seconds in this video)
Any suggestion would be much appreciated :?
-
Voltages are good: 4.8V instead of 5.0 MAY make a diference, but you should at least see something on the screen (garbage or a resetting screen).
Check that your video signal cables have continuity to the monitor connector.
The monitor works, even if you can see some raster problem (probably "screen", generally modified by the lower pot on the flyback, is set too high).
-
Well, I tried to plug to game, without the monitor connector, and basically it gives the same result on screen but with a lost of syncro.
So still hard to say if the board is trying to output something! :? It would be also good to know if the monitor here works the same like other Nintendo games, I means if it handles an inverted picture coming from the board?
-
Any idea what type of monitor is in there? I had a Toei GM-20 chassis the had the same symptoms (synced retrace lines when plugged in, unsynced when unplugged, regardless of the signal coming in). Unfortunately I sold it before I figured out the issue ::)
Also if it's black and white, it should be a regular composite video signal which you could hook the PCB output into an RCA port of a TV to test, or likewise, plug a composite video source into the monitor to test it.
-
I have been following your thread with envy as I would love to own this machine .
But I would like to help you get this going if I can as I have some rare Nintendo machines also .
The sound board and game board are the same as my space launcher and space fever .
They all use the same hard ware and it is possible to play sherrif on my sf & sl just by a simple rom swap
I also have a spare sound board if yours is broken
-
Same game/sound board than space fever? Wow, that's a very interesting information! I'll try to catch one and compare what could be wrong on mine.
I suspect my sheriff sound board to be working, because I can hear the 'scream sound' at power on. Do you have a spare SF game board for me to test maybe?
-
If you have no luck then yes but there is one on eBay for sale a working one
-
Got some stuff last friday.. parts coming from a Sheriff cabinet, probably coming from the "bell fruit version" as mentioned by Chuckie egg?
Anyway, among the parts, an 'untested' pcb, but the also the dedicated '8 ways rotary-like / push pull joystick' which *I hope* should be the same used in my original Nintendo cabinet 8) Note that the board is also an Nintendo original one!
Stay Tuned...and fingers crossed!
-
Looking at the monitor, its brightness is turned way up, or you have a blanking problem..
Always nice to have spare parts ;D
-
Let's put that 'untested' board...
Power on... nothing?
Power off/on .... YEAH! :-* :-* :-*
Working! Maybe sounds problem (some sounds seems missing when I play the game, but I'm not sure..)
Regarding the monitor, I have to set the focus and contrast potentiometers located somewhere behind that huge monitor 'box'. 'will figure out how to reach them...But for now, the news of the day is... that damn it board seems to work! :-*
-
Dang!!! What where the chances!! :spaceace: :spaceace:
Thats great news!! If this game is on MAME, maby you can check the "missing" sounds.. :)
-
Dang!!! What where the chances!! :spaceace: :spaceace:
Thats great news!! If this game is on MAME, maby you can check the "missing" sounds.. :)
I'm usually not lucky regarding the 'untested' board, but I had the opportunity to get this kit (boards + joysticks + others parts) for a very fair price (thanks Rémi :-*)
...and it's finally a working board. What else?
Regarding the sounds, yes, I'll do that. 8)
-
if i remember correctly, the sounds on Sheriff were so annoying, it might be a good thing that some of them are missing ;) ;D
-
Nice result, +1 for Etienne, turn down the brightness a bit and those vertical lines will disappear. ;)
-
if i remember correctly, the sounds on Sheriff were so annoying, it might be a good thing that some of them are missing ;) ;D
It dosent seem that bad...: http://youtu.be/DUPaB0zizoI
-
This is fantastic news,
I am so glad you got it going :)
Such a great game and beautiful art
You must be proud
Nice one dude
I wish I had one too
-
I forgot to ask you
Can you tell me the code number on the game pcb and sound pcb please ?
-
Nice! :spaceace:
Interesting, so it's got a full-color monitor in there then? Is there a backdrop or is the image just reflected into a mirror?
-
Can you tell me the code number on the game pcb and sound pcb please ?
Will check that for you, no problem :)
Interesting, so it's got a full-color monitor in there then? Is there a backdrop or is the image just reflected into a mirror?
Yes, full color monitor, picture reflected into a mirror. No backdrop.
-
Can you tell me the code number on the game pcb and sound pcb please ?
Here's the boards view.
Game PCB :
Remember the 'missing sounds' problem? Let's try my *spare* PCB, in a temporary setup as you can guess...
HELL YEAH! This sound PCB ...'part of an untested set' ... is perfectly working! :-* :-* :-*
OK, Sounds PCB close up :
Replacing the capacitors would probably help to repair the original one, or these sound boards are victim of an other 'specific' failure syndrome ?
-
That's awesome mate
They are original sheriff pcbs, amazing !
I thought it might say SFS which are space fever pcbs but I've never seen TWG.
I would love to see a video of it working
Thanks for sharing mate that's really something special.
-
Now, let's try to fix the 'contrast/focus' problem on the monitor.
Dawn, there's absolutely no direct access to the monitor electronic parts. All is locked inside an heavy box! I finally found how to remove it!
I didn't completely removed that monitor box (a pain to move)... but just enough to see if I can find the usual 'Focus / Contrast' potentiometers located on the monitor chassis.
Arghhh... only focus here :-\
OK, at least this 'focus' potentiometer solves me one of the two problems... so there is a contrast/brightness problem on this monitor. I hope a capkit will solve this... but it would be also nice to name that monitor. Any idea about the model of this monitor?
-
didn't the older nintendo games use sharp monitors? i know that radar scope and space firebird did ...
-
Awesome Bruno, love the game and the machine !
My RS had a Sanyo monitor, it's just an earlier model than the common 20 EZ.
-
I can't really see from the pictures Bruno,But it's in ametal box like the cocktail machines .
It must be a Sanyo like the cocktails have.
Can you see the make of it ?
-
OK, I think it'll be more easy to identify that monitor with more pictures. Will do soon.
Meanwhile, let's examine the control panel... yes... cracks in the cpo... but also the famous 3in1 'joystick/spinner/push button', and its missing knob :-\
It's the first time I examine the back of the panel... what the hell these fours screws are 'empty' (green arrows)??
Damn it! ...the current 'joystick/spiner...' mechanism couldn't be the original one after all? If so, not sure if a such 'custom' hardware could be used in other games? So why an other company would built a such specific hardware? Or maybe that one would fit on the bandido panel version?
Anyway... call me mister lucky guy today ... 'coz among the parts I've received in my last package... there is ... drum roll... THE ORIGINAL NINTENDO 3in1 'joystick/spinner/push button' hardware!!!
As you can see, it perfectly fits the 4 'built in' screws from this panel. Note in red the holes done to attach the one I've just removed (laying on the right from the picture).
While I'm working on the panel, I got from the previous owner a 'Nintendo Control Panel' bolt set, in order the replace them... but ... I prefer to keep the original ones... yes... even those slightly and even strongly rusted!
Same idea with the cracks on the panel... It's sooo authentic and so matching the good old fashion 'cow boy' style! :-* Broken & damaged naturally! I love this more & more! :P
Oh, of course some cleaning here & there... it's dirty as hell inside...
Except to fix the brightness problem on the monitor, there's nothing more to do on this cabinet... except playing it of course! :)
:spaceace:
-
Cool artwork on the cpo and bezel, great job on the controls. ;)
-
That's really interesting I can't believe you managed to find another control nob mechanism
The buttons and monitor look so similar to what they used on the early cocktail machines .
-
Same idea with the cracks on the panel... It's sooo authentic and so matching the good old fashion 'cow boy' style! :-* Broken & damaged naturally! I love this more & more! :P
i hope i'm not offending you, bruno, but a few years ago you would have fixed those damages in a heartbeat. rusted screws were a no-go, damaged control panel - let's fix it. and now: broken and damaged  bruno loves it! face it, you're getting lazy with age, bruno :P
-
Well, I wouldn't say 'lazy' 'coz I'm still putting a lot of energy & as much time as possible in various projects.
I'm more & more fan of antiques objects... When you show them, they gives you instantly a story. Example :
...these items wouldn't have the same charm if they were looking brand new after a full repaint... especially when you know they are old!
I wouldn't care too much if that lamp uses a 'modern' bulb for example ;)
Have a look at this show tv : SALVAGE HUNTERS (http://www.discovery.ca/showpage.aspx?sid=43536) ... I more & more choosing that way to restore cabinets 8)
For the sheriff, I *may* replace the broken CPO, but there's absolutely nothing else to do on it.
In this case, the rusted screws perfectly match the 'cow boy' style of the cabinet. But I wouldn't left rusted screws on every cabinets of course... ;)
In addition, that cabinet is so rare... let's preserve it as original as possible.
I use to think 'restoring' is a balance to find for each object : what will be fixed/replaced and what will be left 'as is'... and because we have all our point of view, we probably do the things differently...
Enough blabla... let me demonstrate you how great this cabinet looks now :-*
...what??? the neighbor put a new garden fencing?
Naaaa... it's just I wanted to picture my oriental flowering cherry. I only have few days per year to take pictures of it! :P

The more picture I see from your Nintendo cabintes, the more I fall in love with them. :D
I have to resist, Zaccs only. :D
This one looks beautiful, especially with the cherry blossom surrounding. :spaceace:
-
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
got to agree with bruno, the rusty screws fit the theme of the cab perfectly.. i love it!
-
I've mentioned it plenty of times before but I L-O-V-E that machine. The artwork is so brilliant, the fake wood looks so realisitc and you can already see Miyamoto's hand in the art.
I regret SO much missing the one for sale in Austria when I just started the hobby..... :'(
Fantastic pictures !
I use to think 'restoring' is a balance to find for each object : what will be fixed/replaced and what will be left 'as is'... and because we have all our point of view, we probably do the things differently...
Amen. Sometimes you (need to) go for a full restore, sometimes not. I love both, it is indeed a case-by-case decision and I think most of us go through the "phases" of first wanting to restore everything to new and then accepting more original parts that may not look perfect but add character.
-
Fantastic pics
It's a balance restoring
It's all about preservation, save as much of the original as you can.
But I don't like rust and I don't like rot
Because that can eat away at a rare cab
I think you've done the right thing with this cab
But maybe the screws need cleaning up
Great job and I am extremely envious
Thank you so much for sharing
-
i've said it before as well: this cabinet is a piece of art - hopefully i'll be able to find one myself one day ...
you got really REALLY lucky on finding the missing (and working) parts, bruno, congratulations. this cabinet needs to be displayed with its original components!

Hi Bruno, I am going to help that guy with is sheriff tomorrow night ,I think it's a power supply issue.
I will take some spares along with me which he can have .
I am very excited about seeing one even tho it's just a cocktail version.
Hope I can get it working
