Title: Visit to Funspot Laconia (picture heavy)
Post by: ckong on May 29, 2012, 04:11:16 AM
Today was a great day, I finally had a chance to visit the Arcade Museum at Mekka, I mean Funspot in Laconia. My wife and I are making a little tour through a few states of the USA, and by pure luck we came very nearby Laconia.  ;D

Of course I had to grap this golden opportunity, so on this beautiful day (weather wise) I dropped my beloved wife with a good book at Weirs Beach and I headed for the centre of Classic Arcade history.

I had a coupon (a real American thing, a coupon), which gave me 70 free tokens after purchasing tokens for $ 20. And that is a lot of tokens:

I first wanted to explore the area, before I would play the classic games. And there is a lot to see. Funspot has 3 floors. The basement only has modern games and the cafetaria. I won´t bother you to show photo´s of the modern games, but in the cafetaria there are some nice wall signs and photo´s telling the history of funspot:

By now I started to feel hungry, so I went for a chilli dog and fries. I never had one before, so I didn´t know what to expect.

Is this eatable?  :o ???

Yep, it is, and it tastes not that bad  :)

This bag is a nice souvenir, so I got another few of them, fresh ones.

The founder and owner of funspot, Bob Lawton, has a love for old amusement games and kiddy rides, and on the first floor there are some nice examples of them.

And great thing is that all thiss stuff is still playable.

Furthermore there are more modern games to be played, mainly ticket games (no fun at all), a bowling alley and this beauty

This sitdown game is in great condition and I had a lot of fun with it.

But hey, what I really came for, can be found on the second floor.

No, not the indoor golf center, the 225 classic games of course ....

Before showing you the classic games, randomly, I first want to let you know what great people are behind Funspot and the classic arcade section.

André already told me that Gary is a great guy and that I should defintely meet him, so last week I e-mailed Gary that I would visit Funspot and I said that I would very much like to meet him (oeps, now you guys know that the visit was no cheer luck  :o  ;)  8) ) and he replied saying that he would be glad to meet me, I just had to ask for him while being there.

So I did, I asked a Funspot employee if Gary was in and if he would have the time to see me. The guy was not sure, Gary would probably be to busy for the upcoming annual tournament (end of this week), but he would do his best. So I went back to play some games ....  and after a few minutes not only Gary came towards me, but also a few of his team members (Mike and a very nice lady). This was great, we had a very nice chat together, Gary was really interested in what I had to say and he even asked if it was OK to make a picture with him for their Facebook page!!!  ;D  Sure, I said, so the lady took some photo´s and in return  :D she also made a photo with my camera of Gary and me.

We talked another few minutes, but I knew that they were very busy. So we all shook hands and said goodbye, and I went on playing the games.

About half an hour later though, I was taking a brake downstairs near the bowling alley, Gary came again towards me, this time with the founder and owner Bob Lawton and a nephew of Bob. Gary had told Bob about the visitor from Europe, and Bob wanted to meet me and say hi!!  :o  How cool is that?

Of course I did say thanks to him, as I already had done to Gary, for creating this great place and how much I love it. Bob is a really nice guy, as all of them at Funspot and we had some good laughs (I ´blamed´ him for not founding a Funspot in Europe    ) It´s amazing that Bob founded Funspot 60 years ago and is still working there for four days a week. Fortunately his nephew is now also operating the business.

After a while we went our own way again. Have fun, they told me, and I sure will. Great guys.

This all was really amazing, and today has been a great day. I got a chance to play a lot of games that I never had seen or played before, some of them are very good, like Space Zap and Road Blasters (both great games), some are a little bit less interesting, like Road Runner or Hard Drivin´ (I will not mention the Laserdisc games here). Almost all games were in great working order, but I think that I didn´t play half of them, and I didn´t ´waste´ time playing games like Pac-Man, DK, Galaxian, etc. because I can play then whenever I want. Playing video games is hard work!   .

The game that got the most coins? That has to be Tempest, with Space Zapper and Juno First in second and third place. But when I´m back from holiday, I just have to reconsider some games that I have, because I really need Tempest.  ;D

I left Funspot at 5.30 PM, after a loooooong time of playing a lot of games, but I will be back tuesday evening, for a second and final round.

Enough with the words, here are ´some´ photo´s. I made the last  few especially for André. He has a Video Pinball, which needs just a bit TLC, but hé, once you´re finished, it will be looking great. I played the game a couple of times today, and it is amazing how well this ´pinball game´ playes. Extraordinary techniques have been used. Would be nice to learn a bit more about it.  ;)

That's a great collection of arcade machines - thanks for your pictures. Owning an Atari Lynx, it's especially nice to see all those Atari arcade machines, which were converted for the Lynx.

Keep on having fun in the US.

Absolutely fantastic pics, bet you had a great time!

I would love to go there myself one day but as i can't fly it looks very doubtful, i could spend all day on the Buck Rogers machine  ;D

Hah, great report Erik ! :) Glad you got to meet Gary _and_ Bob ! (He wasn't around when I was there IIRC). Gary is a very nice guy, not one word of bragging about his work or the place, but full of passion for it and the machines. He actually asked which games I had and what condition they were in etc.
When I asked him how in heaven's name they managed to keep them all running he said that it was indeed a gigantic job, taking long days and that they had about the same number in cabs in storage still to be restored as there were on the floor (!!!!!!).

Looks like they rearranged a number of games for the tournament. I don't remember seeing Omega Race, at least not at that spot, and I don't think I ever saw SW cockpit there (maybe it was there but not working at that time). Space Zap was indeed a "discovery' for me too. It's brilliant in it's simplicity and makes you want to "give it one more go" every time. Did you look if my hi score is still on the Gravitar.

Yes....the Video Pinball deserves more love ! I guess I'm just a little but "scared" about it because of the stat it is in and the woodwork required....

I don't remember on seeing a single one of them...

Yeah it's great Erik made pics of the cafeteria area ...I was blinded by all the cabs ;) I did watch a lot of those items though, very cool !

No, I didn´t see any Zacc´s, but I will check it tonight again.

As I said, almost every game was working, I only noticed 4 or 5 non-working games, one of them was the SW cockpit  :(  But fortunately there was an upright one. And I have the same feeling with Space Zap, you just have to put coins in the game over and over again.  :D  At first the game is pretty difficult, at least for me, because the way you have to a-synchronize your left and right hand. But once you get the hang of it .....  just wonderful. I sure will play it tonight again.

About the tournament, Gary told me that there will be a seperated section of the floor where the tournament will take place. There will be 20 games to play on and these games were already taken away from the floor to be prepaired for the tournament. Gary keeps the gamelist a secret until the event starts, so people attending it can´t practice upfront. It´s a fair decision I guess.

I played Omega Race a few times, it´s a nice game, but the way the game is presented ´on screen´ is nicer.

thx for the fabulous report und the gazillion pictures, erik! I especially love the picture of you right before entering arcade heaven!!!

regarding space zap: i had the change of buying one almost two years ago, but it was in pretty rough shape, the wiring had been hacked, the original boardsets were not present AND the monitor had been necked, so i decided against it. still thinking about it from time to time as the game really is a lot of fun!!!

Great great report Erik!, with superb pictures!!!!
I just noticed something... Heaven forbid!!!! - but if there was going to be a fire, water would be poring out of the sprinklers and totally ruin all these great machines.... wouldent it be better if they had a Halon or a CO2???
Title: Re: Visit to Funspot Laconia (picture heavy)
Post by: level42 on May 30, 2012, 01:11:54 AM
I feel pretty safe to answer this one because it's my job:

Firemen do not care for ancient videogames. They care for people's lives. And that's what the goal is of any fire protection system. First people, then animals and waaaaay later environmental things.

Fire regulations differ from country to country, but usually it is what is demanded in those regulations what is installed in a building. Sprinkler systems are very expensive and regular companies rather don't have them. They require bi-weekly maintenance and checks which is also very costly. In Holland it depends on how big a building is if you need to install one or not.

If you would like to save the games and kill all the visitors and personall in Funspot when there's a serious fire, your idea is great. CO2 is poisenes and Halon "takes away the air" and although not poisenes by itself, it will kill you if you stay in the room.
Halon is by the way forbidden to be produced or used in the EU (of course not in the US.....) because it is one of the causes of the hole in the ozone layer.

But you DO have a point. And we could help them :)
We sell high pressure water fog systems. Imagine a system like Sprinkler, but instead of spraying loads of water like a shower onto everything (and indeed damaging everything inside) it releases a mist or fog. It uses normal water but the nozzle holes are so tiny and the pressure so high (way over 100 bar) that a fog will be created that much more effectively stops a fire. The biggest advantage however is that this fog is NOT harmful to electronic machines in the area where it is released. As a matter of fact we sell lots of these systems in huge datacenters where keeping the machines as much undamaged as possible is crucial.

Here's a nice video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_NsBZ7oXok&feature=youtube_gdata_player

WOW! Just WOW! If you are still there and have the chance PLEASE take a close up pic of the WHeels II bezel. I am desperately looking for that one. Mine is missing and it's essential for the game. A guy on klov made pics for me but they were way to bad to even try to vector them. Might be to late ... I have to check this forum more often ;) lesson learned.

Well, yesterday I took a photo of EACH AND EVERY SINGLE CAB on the floor, and WHeels 2 should be in it. Not a real closeup of the bezel though, but of the whole cab. I will check it later.

If anyone is interested, I could post a picture of some more particular games, or al of them when I find the time.

@André, Gravitar is not in the tournament this year, so I suppose that your High Score will be save for at least another year.  :-)

I hope so, but even though it's not in the tournament, there will be a lot of good players around and I do think they can/will play other machines as well.....

I guess Mrs.CKONG has discovered the beach and the outlet stores ?? ;););)

I feel homesick when reading about your story, which is a bit weird right, but I feel completely comfortable there and I'd love to be there again !!! Indeed it is not just Funspot...

My tip is the White Mountains, drive up Mount Washington if you dare :):)

You pictured each and every cab ?? That is a huge task ! Say hi from us to Gary should you see him again ! And take pictures of every famous hi score player ;);););)

Will do, more than one. And taking a photo of each game took me an hour. Fortunately I had the whole floor alost for myself, there were maybe 10 people playing games, so I could 'work' pretty fast. I also captured the pinballs and made some extra overview photos. Oh, and I bumped into Gary again and had another little chat. Photo's will follow.

André is right, New Hampsbire is a great place to spend a holiday, we already did a trail walk in the White mountains and because tomorrow the weather will be even better, we will drive all the way up to mount Washington. One downpoint about that is that the landlady told my wife that there are also a lot outlet malls in that area. Bummer  :-(   ;-)  :-)

And today we went to Vermont and saw how maple sirop is being made.
In the evenings I get to visif Funspot, even the two coming tournament nights. I hope to see some well known players.

Here are some more pictures that I made yesterday evening when it was very quiet, including one of Pong and Wheels 2 (will make some detailed pictures of these two tomorrow) and the pinballs that are on the floor. You will see a dude starring in some pictures, just ignore him.  ;D

If there is any other special request for a certain cab, let me know and I will see what I can do. I will visit FS at least two more times.  :P :P :P

By the way, I posted a few photo´s at Nozomi of the more modern games and ticket games present at Funspot: http://www.nozomi.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3995&p=45174#p45174

And finally, for the moment anyway, a link to the album with a picture of each and every game that is shining in the classic arcade department of Funspot, May 2012.

There are 280 of them, which means that together with the 20 that are hold back for the tournament, Gary and his fantastic team have at least 300 unique classic games up and running!!!!!!  :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:  CHAPEAU

Not to mention all the games that are stored in the back, or in repair etc. This is really awesome.

So, check out these stars from the past (http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Funspot%20Laconia%20-%20May%202012/Funspot%20-%20Games%20op%20de%20vloer/)

If you are there again and have the opporunity and the time I will go mad, if you could do detailed photos of the bezel and the "surroundings" and the kind of painted marquee with the green things on it in the back. I already owe you one !!!!

Yeah!! Thanx a lot!! Sme day I will visit Funspot. For sure. I will have to find someone first who needs a new liver, because I will have to sell mine for the price of the holiday  :D

... Just kidding. I'm already planing to go there in a few years. I hope they will be there then. Looks like there is not a big party during the week.

Lol. That would be my arcade budget for an entire year.

And for a once -in-a-lifetime experience!  :)

It´s like Muslims and Mekka, you have to go to Funspot once in your life.  ;)

By the way, I made a lot of pictures of the bezel and surroundings of Wheels 2, most will probably be double. I will drop them somewhere on the internet when I´m back home. I will let you know.

Ok enough offtopic, thanks buddy !

Today was the first tournament day and I had the opportunity to go there for a few hours. Although it was still pretty quiet, about 80 contestants today, there were some well-known players and world record holders playing their games.

Right after I entered Funspot I ran into Mark Alpiger and Donald Hayes.

Both pretty well known for their skills. We chatted for a few minutes and Mark mentioned that he knew Aart van Vliet and how nice Aart is. Aart, if you are reading this, you get the warm-hearted greetings from both Mark and Don.

As I already mentioned, it was still pretty quiet today, although a referee told me that there were already about 30 contestants more on this first day than last year. But Friday and Saturday are the more crowded days.

And the ACAM team must have been pretty glad with the European attention that they even baked this for me:

LOL, I wish that would be true. No, I suppose it was someone´s birthday today.

Before I actually could watch the players in the tournament area, I was approached by a reporter of the NY Times for an interview (on request of the ACAM team). The reporter is doing a piece about the tournament and he wanted to ask me some questions about how we in Europe experience the classic games etc. I took of course this opportunity to briefly mention DLF, but I also got a chance to say quite a bit about Eurocade, what it is all about, what makes it so great and where it is located. The reporter seemed really interested. I made certain that he spelled Eurocade (and my name) correct, so let´s hope that we are in the Monday edition of the NY Times. The reporter couldn´t guarantee that he would use my input, but he promised to e-mail me the piece that will be published. Let´s wait and see.  :D

After the interview I finally went to the tournament area and I watched Dwayne Richard putting up a Funspot High Score on Space Fury, which by the way is an awesome game. It´s vector, colourful and it has great gameplay.

All the registered scores (the contestors have to play each one of the 20 tournament games, but they decide themselves which score of a certain game will be registered. So a player can play multiple times on a certain game until he is satisfied with a reached score) are inputted right away in the scoring system, like the HS of Dwayne:

The Hall of Fame ´wall´ shows pictures and facts of a lot of players, and guess who is number one on the first page:

Here are some random Funspot fact sheets of a few players, guess which one doesn´t belong there:

Here is anoverview of the scores until today, the left column is the total of registred scores per player. As you see only about 50 of the 80 contestans have registered one or more scores.

I will be there tomorrow evening also for a few hours until closing at 10 PM, like today   , so maybe I can speak to some more great players. Should be fun.

At one time I felt a bit foolish of myself. Outside the tournament area there was a guy playing at Super Sprint and taping his game. I watched it for a few minutes and I thought that he was pretty good. So I told him that he was pretty good. ´Yeah´, he said, ´I am indeed pretty good at this game´. Then I asked him why he recorded it. ´For when I get a world record score´, he said. I was like ´Oh´. A few seconds later it struke me and I asked him if he was by any chance the world record holder of this game. `Yes´, he said, `I am`. Oeps

So after a few more minutes I wished him good luck and went along.  ;D

Allright, this will be it, no more Funspot coverage for you guys, or something special must happen tomorrow.

I will close this report with some artistic shots of the Classic Games, thanks to a nice Camera App on my phone.

IF Eurocade will be mentioned in the New York Times, I'm buying you a whole crate of beer instead of just one ;)

Last series of pictures. Yesterday in the late afternoon I visited Funspot for the last time. And there I met Hank Chien. Awesome nice guy. He was playing a game and I stopped and watched him playing for about an hour, until he died at the score of 640,000. It was great to see how he went through the levels, and believe me, it was sometimes amazing how he survived.

I introduced myself after the game and we had a nice chat. He told me that he will do a world record attempt  this weekend, although he already has a taped game of breaking it just two weeks ago. But he likes to try it again during the tournament, also because he is on a role with the game lately.  ;D

And of course the obligatory picture

And one of a few other awesome players who were hanging out there:

The Funspot hall of fame of Steve Wagner:

Here is Hank being interviewed by the same NYT reporter who interviewed me

I hope that I can get a copy of the Monday NY Times, I don´t know if it is available where I am that day (not near NYC).  ???

By now I unfortunately had to leave, and on the way out I passed Donald Hayes who was showing another gamer some tricks on how to play Pac-Man. He made it look so easy.

So guys, if you still have doubts about visiting Funspot, I hope by now that you realize that Funspot NH is a must-visit place for the true arcade gamer!  :) Especially during a tournament. So if possible, visit Funspot.  ;D

So long ......

WOW Funspot is NOW on the frontage of the NYT site:

http://www.nytimes.com/

And here's the full article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/04/arts/video-games/14th-annual-international-classic-video-game-tournament.html?_r=1&hp

Regretfully neither Erik nor DLF nor Eurocade made it in there, but I'm happy to see Scott (who donated almost all of his cabs to Funspot because he's suffering from cancer, see KLOV) is mentioned.

It says this at the bottom:
A version of this article appeared in print on June 4, 2012, on page C1 of the New York edition with the headline: When Defending Earth Cost 25 Cents.

I would still like a hard-copy maybe the article is longer on paper ?

OK guys, I know I promissed not to make fun of DL anymore but I couldn't help giggling a bit when I read DL mentioned in the "rows of obscure titles". Mind you, Gun Fight, Tapper and even Qix made it in that list too !! so maybe it says more about the writer ;)

Awesome, well spotted André. I didn´t know about Scott, sad story. Great though that he donated his games to the arcade museum. I have to read up at KLOV.

Too bad that I´m not in it, must have been because of my accent.

But that doesn´t make the feeling of fun that I had less, Funspot has been quite an experience.

So, it´s in the NY edition of today´s paper? Well, we are going to Philadelphia today, to visit the Independence National Historical Park, and I will look around a bit there for hardcopies. Mind you, I´m not gooing to search for it, but I will keep my eyes open.
