Title: Hello from Norway!
Post by: Arch on March 09, 2012, 11:35:39 AM
Hi people!

My name is Håkon, I'm 36 and I live in Oslo, Norway. I've been into arcade machines for a couple of years now, and I have a very modest but slowly growing collection. I have one dedicated Namco Rally-X, one universal Compu-Game Luxus I, one Flexigame/Model Racing Mini Cabinet and one BAS that has been MAME'd.

I have mostly been hanging out at jammaplus.co.uk, but recently I have been lurking about here a bit as well. The main reason for this is that I am about to get my hands on a Zaccaria Star Splash cab, and there seems to be a lot of Zacc love going on here.  :)

I quite like the restoration aspect of this hobby. I am a novice on most of the hands on-work, but I enjoy it even so. Where I feel most confident, however, is with the artwork restoration. I'm a graphic designer by profession, so I've put a lot of effort in getting the repro graphics right. Here is the gem in my collection. This cab was a total wreck when I got it, but now it looks rather flashy if I might say so myself:

I look forward to hanging with you guys and to share some love for the euro cabs!

Cheers,
Håkon/Arch

Hi and welcome! :)

That's a very nice cab with amazing artwork. So you designed the graphics for the marquee and the controlpanel? Or did I get you wrong?

Hi, and thanks for the warm welcome!

Luigi: No, the marquee is original and the control panel looks as it did when the cab came out of the factory in Denmark sometime between 1982 and 1985. No design on my part. What I had was two original cp's that were both badly torn and burnt by cigarettes, but luckily they overlapped so that I managed to puzzle it together into a whole image. I then went on to vectorize it and had it printed on gameongraphix. Much like the process described by Etienne here on the forum, although my skills doesn't even come close to his. He is a master!  :o

Belike: Ai, 1 euro! Damn! I must say I that for a universal cab, I think the Starsplash is close to perfect. I love the graphics on it, and the shape is strangely enough the same as my Compu-Game. They will look good together! It is a long way to go before it is restored though. Will keep you posted.

Mastaaah Etienne: hehe, I see the similarity. :)
Level42: lol, unless he was of Japanese origin. Then he would surely be a wii-king... ok, I'll get my coat.
Ataritoobin: nice to see you too mate! :)
Muerto: wow, compared to where the rest of the guys who are into woodies are located, we are practically neighbours! Judging from your signature you have quite the collection. Where in Denmark are you, btw? :)

Thanks again! Happy to be here! :)
Superully: Are there any more Norwegians in here?
About the requested photos of the Rally-X: It is not mint, to say the least, so it will have to undergo a bit of restoration work. Here are some photos of how it looked when I first got it.

Since these photos were taken, I've recapped it and given the cp/screen overlay a good clean with the Novus kit. I've sourced some t-molding which is exactly the same colour and a new button. But, as you can tell, there is a lot of hard work and elbow grease left. As such, this is my spring project. After it's restored, I might sell it off to clear space for something else. Space is my biggest problem really, as I live in a small flat with gf and two kids.

The side art is in a pretty bad state, so I have been working on that as well. I spent quite a bit of time on the net looking for vector files and such, but to no avail. The Namco version is nowhere to be found. What I finally managed to come up with was a decent picture of the Midway version. The Midway side art is quite a heavily touched up version of the Namco one, where all the spots where it says Namco erased and replaced by cruder brush strokes, smiling mouths in the headlights, erasing and overcoating. Of course I couldn't live with the poorer Midway version, so I went to work. So, here is the Namco art as it once was, ready for the printers.

Top left: my cab with original messed up artwork. Bottom left: the Midway version. Right: my new version. Se if you can spot all the differences!

Thanks, I guess. :) You say that as if it is a real rarity. I know I haven't been able to locate any pictures of my version online, but I haven't really got much else to go by to figure out its value or rarity other than a J+ member telling me it's "rare". Am I sitting on something special here? What would be the decent price to sell this for to a fellow collector you think?

That's always difficult. Even though original Namco cabs are indeed very rare in Europe, one will have to like the game of Rally-X. Would it have been a Puckman I'd say it would be very valuable indeed, but even then you will have to find someone willing to pay it. Sadly, Rally-X is really a lot less desired by collectors in general.

ill give you 10€ for it  ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Etienne: I might take you up on that. ;)
Level42: Yes, its the eternal "whatever people are willing to pay"-question, isn't it. Tough nut to crack, that one.  :? Perhaps one way to go is to do a 1:1 swap for another game?
Oh well, either way, I'll do the refurbishing, and after that I will probably be in the situation (again) where I say to myself: I've put so much work into this, now I can't sell it. :)

Arch,

If it were a Puckman or a Galaxian then easy over 1000E. I picked up a Tank Batallion last year for 475E. I would say a RallyX is somewhere between 475E and maybe 800E for a really nice one.

Anyhow I need you to sell that to me to put next to my Tank Batallion - i'd even be interested in it in the current condition and I can also do trades  :spaceace:  :spaceace:  :spaceace:  :spaceace:

thx for the pics, Håkon, never seen a Namco version of Rally-X before. control panel art and bezel are completely different from the midway version, i like the namco bezel so much more, doesn't look that generic!

would it be possible to get a full frontal (nudity) photo of the control panel and the bezel?

about the sideart: i really love the comparison shot of the namco and midway stuff, interesting to see what they did to get rid of "anything namco". thx for sharing

p.s.: at least one forum member is from norway, his nickname is slowcade. guys, we need that user map!!! ;)

Superully: here are some pronshots as requested. I can't really understand why Midway decided to drop all the cool cartoons on the bezel.  :D

Olly: Hi! Thanks for the heads up about the price. Not sitting on a huge gold mine it seems.  :-\ That amount doesn't really allow me to buy and import another cab, which would be the point of selling. I might eventually consider a swap though, although I'm not sure how one should go about the practicalities. But I won't be hogging it from a collector who really wants it just to be a sad bastard, so if anything interesting comes up in terms of other cabs within the same range I will of course consider it.

Alpha has plenty of interesting stuff for trade ;)

Lovely pics, I always find the combined bezel/cp to look so beautiful on original Namcos.
Must have been a nightmare for maintenance though...

Arch,

If it were a Puckman or a Galaxian then easy over 1000€.....

When I found my square-buttoned Galaxian and posted it on my thread I have got offers well over 2000€ untestet but complete right away.....there was a big demand on this japanese version while the the round player-buttoned version seems to be far from rare.

I see them them in warehouse finds all over Europe.

I personally would prefer the Rally-X as it seems to be more rare to me and the I dont like the yellow Pacman cabinets so much, I hate the sideart. This is why I digged a Namco-licensed NSM Puckman from my barn raid as it is a lot more beautiful.

The friend who always borrows out his van to me to pick the games is the son of a former vendor. I meet the father yesterday and told him to tell me about the golden time of video-gaming and he told me that he still got an old Rally-X in the storage fully stacked with stuff....but I can have it as it got to go sometime anyways.

Lets see if I have luck and find my second square-buttoned Namco or just a generic cabinet.
