In december last year i had the chance to get my hands on a very rare and hard to find galaga´88 original cab. the asking price for it was 600 EUR incl. a 60 in 1 PCB. the cab was converted to a universal jamma machine, marquee is from pacmania, the cp is very hacked and also the wiring harness.
here are the sale annonce.

in detail:

arrived by me, i had first remove the red plexi from the cp. unfortunately the cpo are in poor condition, but fortunately the sidearts are present.

3x original serialnumber labels inside

In the last days i partially restored the galaga 88.
as you can seen on the last picture, the control panel is very hard hacked, it has 11!!! extra holes they must be filled.
A nice cpo repro from usa arrived in the last days.

Ok, first thing to do: removing the old cpo

and done...
taping up the original holes.
ok, and now the big question, how to close these many holes. the professional way is welding in a metal factory. The first viewed factory located in my neighboorhood, the asking price 70 EUR for make it. i´m pissed off and says good bye. >:(
today i came in another factory and these people are very incredible. they took directly the panel and after 15 minutes it was finished, and the price: 10 EUR for filling 11 holes incl. grinding and bending. I gave him 20 EUR, very nice job!!! :spaceace:
here pics from work on my panel.
ok, arrived home i sand the panel and makes it clean and smooth. Next step: paint job.
After these i take the new cpo from the usa and fixed it on the panel.
Ok, and now the final act: tape the cpo. fortunately an easy step, the quality was very good and the material easy to handle.
After installation of 2 cone button i built the cp in my galaga 88.
I think i´ts looking very good, or isn´t?

and the entire view

and...
asking bruno kindly again for his galaga´88 marquee... ;)

nice toralf! i like the job those metal guys did on the control panel. 10 (20) bucks is a great price for their work.

yes ully, you are absolutely right. and if i have further problems like this, i know where i find the right guys.
-
Fantastic! Nice find and well worth it.
For the harness, could you not just copy the Pacmania one?
I may have a Galaga '88 PCB for sale if you need one.

Wow, many thanks for offering me your PCB. yes, i need a original one and if you are selling it, then please let me know.
the "harness-copy" is a good point, but the plugs between the cp/main wiring are not the original ones and the pcb-connector with sw button and more are not present. to bring simply this cab back to life it´s ok, but the 100% orig. condition came only with the original wiring. i must be see...
-
the restoration continues...
Here is the disassembled unit, completely converted, absolutely nothing original here. :'(
(http://www.electromance.de/galres13.JPG)
next step: find the missing parts and reassembly the cp in 100% original state.
helpful is the flyer from TAFA, good to see that the leaf switches are yellow colored and a atari logo stick in the middle...
mmmh, I've seen this button before a while in my storage, and this logo sticks too... so take your time and look... :P
...and yeessss, i had find an rusty panel from atari a.p.b. and the leafswitches are present in the exact color: yellow!
the condition of these buttons are really good and that was why i start to clean and install these original leafswitsches into my galaga88 cp.
done! looking good so far, or isn´t?
and now the atari logo stick... find this also mounted in a gauntlet cp.
also disassembly and cleaning these rare piece, condition is not perfect, but good enough so far.

ok, lets built it in the galaga´88...

smaller cosmetic repairs and more,
cleaning job

Stunning work :spaceace: !
-
Yes! The marquee looks far better displayed on your cabinet than stored in my drawer ;)
Great job! :)
-
Looking very good !

cool to see those rusty apb and gauntlet parts from "you know where" being put to use - either you are a clairvoyant or it was simply pure luck that you decided to grab exactly those parts from "you know where"!
btw, i'm no fan of the galaga 88 art at all, it looks like a child designed / drew this (or i did :P). for me this is one mof the ugliest artworks out there, especially when compared to the fabulous pac-mania stuff which rests in the same cabinet, but that's not your fault ;). nevertheless, you've done a great job so far bringing this baby back to life!
oh, the galaga 88 pcb on the british forum has been sold to someone else :'(
-
Nice job !!! :spaceace: :spaceace: I love the atari logo stick

I wonder how much time it took the guy to fix those holes ? 10 euro is nothing to save yourself the headache of fixing it yourself (can be done but a lot of work !)
I like Galaga '88 better than Galaga. Great work !
Glass company huh ? Were you the guy who did the non-glare pinball glass sheets ??
My dream would be finding non-glare tinted glass bezels for some videogames...... ;)

I like the artwork, the game anyway. There are of course cabs with much better artworks, but galaga88 is not ugly. my opinion.

Unfortunately not these asking guy, sorry i can´t help yet...
I work in a great glass coater company, we work with large areas of glass and coat this under vacuum to make glass with sun protection and thermal protection.

glad that you kept it - it was too rusty for me and a saw no use in taking it. but obviously you already knew it would come in handy one day - and it did!!! please keep the rest of the parts, i might need them for my apb resto in 2024! :P

Oh come on guys, let's get that story out.....it's been a couple of years ago now.....you still think you'll get arrested ?? It would be a nice story as "follow up" to "The Ship" (TM) (C) 2012

probably not arrested, but who knows how far that information would travel, i'd rather keep it disclosed for now. i wonder what toralf is thinking though ...
It would be a nice story as "follow up" to "The Ship" (TM) (C) 2012
definitely!!! not as huge on a scale as The Ship, but nevertheless an exotic location and everything arcade lifestyle needs. the best three days of my life!!! btw, i haven't given up on going back there again ...

It is difficult ... The trip was great, indeed the best (arcade)-trip of my life. but unfortunately not exactly legal. and despite the attempt to interview the owner, we had no official permission to be there. I don´t know if we can post here publicly ... :-\

Sure you can :D ;D  hahahahaha
