Title: [Roadtrip] Pole Position Upright - prepare to qualify
Post by: Superully on December 02, 2011, 05:06:23 PM
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/poleposition_ully.jpg)

here's one of those roadtrips i did quite a while ago but haven't found the time to let you guys in - until now!!!

as always, let's have a look at what's coming up first

as you can see, not a huge distance to cover this time (also confirmed by the stats on my steering wheel)

prepare to qualify

i'm off to a good start, passing one vehicle after the other (not caring about speed limits 8))

putting the pedal to the metal

damn it, not fast enough! but the second place is good enough to qualify for the rest of the roadtrip :P

i need to slow down in the city, although the wide empty roads are very tempting

the seller's location is in an industrial area of nuremberg

one last obstacle before the pit stop

with my car (!) i'm entering an underground complex

a view through the side windows: old machinery and metal parts everywhere!

then i finally reach the object of my affection: a working pole position :) (well, actually it's a pp2 pcb in a pp1 cab)

time to grab the steering wheel ...

... and play a round!

before loading the game, let's have quick look inside

as you can see, the battery which often leaks and destroys the board is still on the pcb, ...

... so i remove it immediately!

time to head out again

be careful, sharp right turn ahead

i'm passing an area called "zeppelinfeld"

during the time of the nazi regime, this aread was used as a military parade ground

the streets are almost too narrow for my formula 1 car :D

but then it's finally time to speed up to the max again

here's something i spotted during a short stop :spaceace:

the final (pit) stop!!!

one country, two counties, 307 kilometers, 4 hours 15 minutes on the road - this roadtrip is OFFICIALLY OVER!

Nice catch Ully! Finding one of those PCB's working is even rarer than finding out the cabinet!!!

Nice roadtrip to my home town!

On the first picture you are really on a race track: the Norisring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norisring), you can see the double and triple "Leitplanken" (i dont know the english word) from the race track.

And on the second picture you are on the Zeppelinstraße, not the Zeppelinfeld. A Nürnberger would call this area "Steintribüne". You stand on the back side of the Steintribüne, the Zeppelinfeld is the green place in front of the Steintribüne: google maps link (http://maps.google.de/maps/myplaces?ll=49.429932,11.124306&spn=0.002983,0.008256&vpsrc=6&ctz=-60&t=k&z=18).

Greeting from Nürnberg/Fürth

thx for the explanations, hugo! however, i never said that i was driving on the zeppelinfeld, i just wrote that i was passing the zeppelinfeld :P. i wished i would have had the time to stop there and take a look, but i was on a tight schedule. is it closed for the public or open for everyone?
Title: Re: [Roadtrip] Pole Position Upright - prepare to qualify
Post by: hugo_ausdemwald on December 03, 2011, 10:48:08 AM
It's not open for everyone. But there is nothing special to see, look at this picture:
http://maps.google.de/maps/myplaces?ll=49.430494,11.121157&spn=0.000007,0.008256&vpsrc=0&ctz=-60&t=k&z=18&layer=c&cbll=49.430494,11.121157&cbp=12,0,,0,0&photoid=po-40164767

It's a big lawn with some buildings surrounding it. And it's used as a place for big open air concerts, I have seen the U2 Pop Market Tour on the Zeppelinfeld. Anybody knows "Rock im Park (http://www.rock-im-park.com/)"?

If you wanna see the typical tourist sightseeing stuff you have to visit the Kaiserburg (castle), the Albrecht-Dürer-Haus, Hauptmarkt with Schöner Brunnen and Frauenkirche (currently also with "Christkindlesmarkt" (http://www.christkindlesmarkt.de/)) and Lorenzkirche. And Nürnberg has some amazing beer-cellars (http://www.felsengaenge-nuernberg.de/en/home.html) from the Middle Ages, it's a real underground maze.

Nice one Ully !

Sign of the times:

Grundig....once a proud brand of all kinds of equipment. Now, nothing more than a brand stuck to Chinese built products....

Lucky man ...  A *working* Pole Position :) Mine is waiting inside a friend's garage since years to be restored  :-\

Do you what it the purpose of this building now?

I've seen many second war documentaries that showed such impressive constructions build during that crazy period  :-\! Amazing

Thanks for the trip  8)

Don't know what you mean by that Michael, since that's exactly how I see the real world  ;)
VERY cool report Ully, I like the gloomy mood inside that warehouse, seeing a working game with bright colors in there is almost surrealistic.
You're definitely qualified for the coolest cabs catcher tournament.

It's a tribune, and that's the purpose. At the Norisring DTM Race it's the main tribune:

Is it just me or would other people too have expected that that stuff would have been torn down ages ago ?

Pretty freaky to still use it. Just MHO of course...

Was thinking the same. Strange such place is now used for pleasure .. what's next? Auswitch as a playground for children?  :-\

Nice catch Ully and a very funny entertaining roadtrip, thanks a lot! :)

but let us keeping easy with the builings. the ww2 is 65 years ago and the bulidings are present. what do you mean is the best solution with it? rotten or museum? i think none of this both options.
i live in the near of berlin, and there was many similar buildings like this. especially the airport tempelhof. and what is the problem with it? in our generation is nothing the same like in 1940s... and we have nothing to do with it...

I think you would have to tear down half of Germany then (or half the world, if you think of any building that was built during a megalomaniac regime - the People's Palace in Bucarest is a perfect example, or the Arc de Triomphe in Paris). A lot of buildings that were built during the Nazi regime still stand and have public uses today (Berlin's Olympia Stadium or the former Tempelhof Airport, for instance).
Why waste a perfectly good building only because it has a tainted history? It's not that it's the building's fault...

edit: what TimePilot said   :)

The main building actually dates from before the Nazi regime, they just took over the area and expanded it.

Following that logic, you'd have to tear down half the great buildings in Europe :)

Ully,

We have family in Nurmberg! I love that city. Gorgeous place... a bit like Edinburgh. I guess it's the castle on the hill surrounded by the old town.

I think I need a trip back soon. Miss the kartoffelnkloss and dunkelbier (dark beer?).

All's good!

My friend, your attitude is very dangerous.  You sound like you want to forget what has happened. I have a bit other view, but that's probably has to do with this:
http://www.google.nl/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=bombardement+rotterdam+1940&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=nl&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=tHvnTvO3O46f-wbOj6ntCg&biw=1607&bih=1033&sei=xHvnTofNO4e6-AbVvezuCg

and my father-in-law who's brother was shot by the Nazi's, my mother who had to live in the south of the country, away from her own family, my dad who walked for days to Friesland to find some food...and they were the lucky one's.

The heart of my city was wiped-out by the Nazi's and the most stupid thing we can do is pretend it never happened.

Mind you, through this hobby I found some of my best friends in Germany. (You guys know who you are :))  And it's nothing to do with "blaming" anyone today...

Yes this is a thing of the past, thank God, but by keeping remembering what happened maybe we can prevent mad men driving us into insane wars like this.

That Zeppelin place I know well from the war films and IMHO yes it should have either been torn down or made a place of remembrance...not to keep on partying.

But let's not cloud this thread with a discussion like this...if you want, "All the rest" is probably the best place..

My friend, you have completely misunderstood. my grandparents have been displaced because of war. I grew up in socialism, in contrast to West Germany where the ww2 was everywhere and always a big topic. All memorials etc we have always visited and honored. and that's a good thing. I am politically left!!
and I hate it that our german generation is set to always and everywhere in connection with the Nazis. and this buildings too! so remember is a good thing, but not with any old built! like liquidx and McVenco said.

Hi Guys. This is a little deep for this forum, and I do not want to offend anyone by this tone. We're all here for our love of all things arcade(y). This has brought us together and that's a good thing. It's a multicultural, multinational forum! Love it! Some have more and better arcade cabs than others... but we can't have everything can we?

Anyway, great upddate Ully. Love the images.

One last comment... it is always good to remember so we can learn and move on, "Lest we forget".
