Title: [Roadtrip] The BIG One Part II - Return to the Island
Post by: Superully on November 04, 2011, 07:46:26 PM

those of you who followed my annual school's out for summer thread (http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2806.0) this year might have noticed that i didn't "complete my mission" in summer.

i'm talking about this one

it's been over a year since i had been to the island for The BIG One (http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1652.0) and although i promised myself lately to limit my "cab income", there were still a couple of cabs waiting for me which i had bought quite a while ago, so i thought it was time to return for one more round of arcade fun. and because i have to wait for additional pictures to arrive from my first-time travel companion, i might as well tease you a little bit before getting this report "on the road" ...

enough teasing - here we go! as always, let's start with a map of what's coming up

DAY 1: GERMANY - BELGIUM

some nice statistics to begin with

once again i had rented a van from my favorite local car rental company AUGE, but this time i wasn't travelling light, because i was going to transport three games across the border: rav had bought an adam's family pinball in germany (which i had picked up for him), on another roadtrip (still unpublished) i had picked up a berzerk for chris and the pole position ii comes from this for sale thread (http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3021.0) (it goes to another forum member)!

the roadtrip started out to nice, calm autumn weather, ...

... but it soon got extremely foggy (be careful, bigtrak on the right ;))

after some hours on the road, things cleared up again in the evening ...

... to some dramatic skies!

upon entering belgium i enjoyed the luxury of illuminated highways all the way through ...

... until i finally reached my destination town

perhaps you already know that gameroom by now, it has been nicknamed The Base by its owner

inside, someone's already waiting for me: chris "chrischris" :P

over the last few months, chris has managed to gather a nice collection of games!

and now, one more has joined the ranks!

after a delightful delicious meal with "the chris family" it was time to go to bed - doesn't this look comfortable?

chris had prepared a nice collection of reading stuff for me - under the watchful eyes of mr godzilla himself!

to be continued ...

Now that I see my gameroom from someone else's point of view, I cannot believe that I dared to say that the eurocade needed some background decoration improvement  :P
To my defense it's still under construction and as you can see many of the giant robots are waiting patiently to be restored.
Watch out 2012!  ;D

@ Ully: yes, I forgot to mention it but Godzillas are very common in Belgium, for instance here's another one spotted in the area of Mons (Belgium).

...and also you uploaded the wrong picture for my gameroom, here's one from the party when I plugged in the Berzerk, too bad you weren't there anymore 'cause you had to leave to bring back that van to Germany... ::)

found some time to continue with the roadtrip report for a little while ...

DAY 2: BELGIUM - ENGLAND

an early wake-up call

chris is taking forever in the bathroom (like a lady), so i'm falling asleep again in the kitchen (sorry for the shaky picture, it isn't easy to take a good photo while sleeping :P)

this one is for charlotte (and all the other bachelor fans out there): i had waffels in belgium (sorry, that's a total insider)

after a short night, the van is still waiting for us right behind the tunnel

one hour after getting up, we're ready to leave for england (note that the "onboard clock" is still set on summer time)

here's what's coming up today

on the road, chris immediately pulls his camera and starts shooting

tunnel s/s la manche - that's our exit

arrival at the french eurotunnel port

we are a little bit early (letter K still waiting for call) ...

... which gives us time to take some more photos (of each other taking photos)

still life

inside, chris spots this wonderful teletubbies kiddie ride ...

... and because his son is the biggest teletubbies fan in the world, he can't resist to have a little chat with tinky-winky. unfortunately, i couldn't convince chris to actually ride this thing :(

the terminal offers some surprises for myself as well :)

the moment we are called, it's starting to rain

boarding procedures

because this is chris' first time on the shuttle, i have to explain to him what he is not allowed to do

chris seems to be a quick learner and he immediately passes the demonstration procedure himself

after passing the exam, i'm calling the train captain to signal our OK for departure ...

... but my french is so bad that i just don't understand what he is trying to tell me! 8)

time to take a short nap

chris uses the time on the shuttle to empty is mailbox

after a pleasant journey, we arrive on the island

chichester is where we have to go

who needs traffic signs when you have the lovebus leading the way?

after receiving so much love, we're extremely hungry, so we're taking a break to grab some great burgers (i love the following series of photos)

enough love and food, let's head out again

the public footpath ...

... leading to rav's home ;)

dominic (aka rav / ravage) almost manages to steal the adam's family pinball from right underneath our nose, but chris manages to snap a picture of him just in time! ;D

over at the unit, rav has installed a brand-new parking sign for his guests ;)

here we are, let the retrokade fun begin!!!

to be continued ...

DAY 2: @RETROKADE

upon entering the premises, the first thing dominic shows us is one of his latest acquisitions: a half-life 2 dual player shooter

that thing is huuuge and although it was not that expensive (for a game of that size and rarity), dom tells us it cost almost four times that much to have it shipped over from japan to germany

it takes quite a while for the game to boot

most of the on-screen texts are in japanese, so chris needs some help here ... 8)

... but then he's right into the center of the action!

it's kill or be killed

but we're not here to play games ;), we're here to get games!!! ;D

game number one is a xybots in nice condition (albeit very dirty). it comes with a spare pcb and control panel (because the one on the machine right now has only one original joystick installed). this one is going to look great next to my vindicators. this makes xybots #3 in germany (as far as i know): one has andreas, one has toralf and now i have one as well. :)

game number two is a crystal castles - one of my personal grails. i think the cab itself is a piece of art and YES, i do like the gameplay as well!

let's get this heavy atari beast in

the game also comes with a whole new set of replacement artwork: control panel overlay, speaker art and marquee art nice!

the games so far have been bought from various sellers across the uk and transported to dom's place, time to grab a game from his personal collection. speaking of which, this one is for MY personal taito collection (also comes with a spare board set). game number three is an elevator action

the next game is no arcade classic in the common sense (although it has a long history as well), but it's one i've bought for my best friend martin and me to bring back some childhood memories. we both are huuuge golf fans (we even play from time to time) and many many years ago we played a game called links for countless hours. and if you want to play golf on an arcade machine, there's really just one good option: golden tee. this one is the golden tee fore complete uk midi version with all available tracks installed (27 in total). let's see if we can re-capture the magic :)

dominic throws in a complete popeye kit (for picking up and delivering the adam's family to his place) which includes sideart, a control panel overlay, a marquee, a boardset, a nos joystick and some nintendo buttons

additionally, i also get a sanyo monitor because one of my nintendo cabs is missing one

right after the loading procedure, oliver aka alpha1 arrives at the unit and together we inspect the extremely rare and unique exterminator cabinet

you want to see games? now you get games :P. although his lineup of video games has shrunk drastically since the last time i was there, dominic still has an impressive collection

he basically has three "keeper rows" - here's the first one

same row from the other side, gotta love that american amidar :-*

"keeper row" #2, as far as i know the house of the dead in the back has been sold to a forum member

"keeper row" #3 (sorry, i cut off the r-type on the left)

also in "keeper row" #3 are these rare beauties :o :o :o

already sold is the omega race, but the reactor is still up for grabs. man, this is one i really really want badly. i'm currently in talks with dom about it ...

still available as well is the juno first (with a partially-working joystick). many people love that game, but i'm not into it at all (fortunately ;))

from oll's personal collection comes this uber-rare game

the food fight in almost immaculate condition is also oliver's - what a beauty!

but what is that? ???

a large part of rav's retrokade has been taken over by pinballs! :-\

and a new one has just arrived (along with oliver): fish tales

the fish on the top of the pinball is an omen of things to come: water, water, everywhere ...

to be continued ...

that thing is huuuge and although it was not that expensive (for a game of that size and rarity), dom tells us it cost almost four times that much to have it shipped over from japan to germany

Nice catches guys !!

Also always impressive to see that barn. Was the MH sold ?

Talking about Halflife, halflife 1 is one of my favorite PC shooters, halflife 2 is cool, but i preffer 1
cant wait untill they finish blackmesa source.. (http://www.blackmesasource.com/) which is basicly halflife 1 in the halflife 2 engine..

Anyway, great collection there!, and you take some cool games there !

Funny, Xander love this in Mame:

You should have real fun there, Rav has a very unique collection of games. :D
My favourite was Tutankham from that row, I've never seen a dedicated one in Europe yet.

'damn it! Rav still has that lovely JUNO FIRST  :-* I must resist... I must resist ... too expensive for a game in my 'nice to have' list anyway  :-\

Another great adventures guys!

MH?

My favourite was Tutankham from that row, I've never seen a dedicated one in Europe yet.

unfortunately, dominic couldn't turn on most of the games because it had been too cold in the unit over the last few days :'(
but i played tutankham two years ago at his place and thought it was quite cool.

I discovered Juno First at Fun Spot last summer and think it's a great game !

wasn't any fun at all with a partially-working stick. but as i've said, a lot of people love it, so there has to be some magic behind it!

Even if stored in a "generic" TAITO cab, the Elevator Action is a machine i would own  :pac:

What is that black "box" on the back of the cabinet (the box with the TAITO logo in it) used for?

i will most likely repaint the cabinet with the "elevator action color scheme"

What is that black "box" on the back of the cabinet (the box with the TAITO logo in it) used for?

that's the monitor "bubble" which protects the neck!

Really? I would bet those cabinets where sufficiently deep to keep the monitor largely inside... interesting, thanks!

honestly i thought / think so too, because the monitor orientation is the same as in jungle king - and this one doesn't have the bubble. my idea is that someone "transplanted" the EA parts into this cabinet which originally had a vertical monitor orientation and therefore needed the bubble. make sense?

i will check though once i've re-arranged the storage over the next few days ...

DAY 3: BELGIUM - GERMANY

once again an early wake-up because i have to drop off the van before 1pm

everyone else is still asleep, so it's my time to take care of the cat

first: some food

then: some love :-*

let's jump into the van ...

... and head home!

enjoying a well-balanced breakfast on the road :D

slowly but surely, the sun's coming up

while taking a short break, i'm sending a text message to patrik telling him that i'll be at the storage at around noon so that he can come over to help me. he'd better be there ...

12 o'clock at the storage, guess who's NOT here! this means i'll have to unload everything A-L-O-N-E, noone else around at this time of day!

suddenly his daughter ronja shows up telling me that patrik should be here shortly, but since i'm an a very tight schedule i can't afford to wait for his arrival, so i'll have to continue alone - for now. well, at least someone's here to take some pictures of "an old dude working his butt off" :P

i love making stressed exaggerated faces (although those machines really are heavy)

number two is out ...

... and parked at a temporary location. i'm already done, patrik where are you?

the story so far

let's get out that taito cab

very dirty underneath

if only HE could help me - would be a piece of cake then!

Ully, do you have an unlimited extensible storage space, or do you have a magic spell for a storage in another dimension, with a single door between our two worlds?  ;) Indeed, collecting stamps would have been a great idea... but I bet you would have recreated a printer workshop to make a new serie of your favorites old stamps  ;D

unfortunately NO (although there is a second level in the storage and both patrik and his dad want to install a pulley so that we can get games up there. however, having tons of games in storage is NOT my ultimate collecting goal, having tons of games in a gameroom is what i long for! fortunately, there are not so many games still out there which i really long for (and those are either rare or expensive), so it will slow down eventually! first priority though is to find a new place for myself to live in, then i'll take it from there ...

PLUS i still need to publish three more roadtips which happened quite a while ago 8)
