There's a big nasty hurricane (Irene) coming our way in the eastern USA:

If it stays a category 2, it will be the largest such hurricane to hit the NYC area in decades.
The potential for disaster here is quite big. I pray for all of us.
-
Damn....I don't believe in praying....but hope the best for all of you !!!
(And my beloved Funspot !)
-
hmm.. its Hurricane-Season .. like every year .. so what do you expect ?
I hope that my ordered spare-parts will not be affected by this damn wind ..
-
Hmmm, I guess you don't realize that a category 2 Hurricane has not struck around here in over 25 years...
-
I wish you all the best.
Hurricanes always -1 !
-
What a sweet name for such a bitch! My first love carried it!
Maybe they should call it "Wreck it Ralph"!
Good luck!
-
Good luck, hang in there !
-
I read category 3 now? :o
Hope this gonna not be too bad :-\
-
Yup, category 3, may go up to a 4 or drop to a 1 no one knows yet.
(Love the Wreck it Ralph name!)
I must say it is quite scary preparing for this. I don't know how people in the Caribbean deal with this all the time.
Up here in NY it is quite rare to get this strong of a storm. Having to cover windows with plywood and tie down anything loose outside is weird. Knowing that some huge trees may fall on my house and that my family may get hurt is real scary!
As far as arcade stuff goes (since this is, after all, an arcade based forum!) I have all my machines in the garage. With 100mph winds it may blow the doors right off and carry those machines everywhere! (picture the poor Dragon's Lair II machine on the roof of someone else's house!)
I guess it is what it is. If I don't lose power I'll post up some pics and maybe video while the storm is raging.

Whenever I'm in the US I'm surprised by the simple and not very sturdy way of building houses.
Even though we rarely have wind speeds like that, I'm sure my house would survive easily because its of concrete inside and brick as cladding. Maybe some roof tiles will fly off (actually that already happened some years ago....)
-
you have to decide .. house of stone ... or a dedicated cab ... house of stone .... dedicated cab ...
Damn ...

Guess your house is a "tunnelkist"
Always wondered why this type is not more popular abroad. If you build 100 houses in similar shape at the same time (maybe that is the problem it's not popular abroad, but it should work for Katerina affected counties), the basic structure (labour on steel moulds+ factual building, excl. raw concrete) is just 1000€ per house! I still wonder why be pay 200000€ excluding land for a basic house here.
-
It's called market and capitalism.
But also, the basic stuff is never expensive, finishing up is. That plus the very expensive ground here in the Randstad...
And indeed, I think most countries don't build large number of similar houses like we have here.
Yes my home is tunnel-build, indeed a smart process....I think I mentioned it in my gameroom construction thread on BYOAC forum.
However, I didn't pay the price _by far_ you mention for it about 14 years ago......it IS worth more than it now though ;)
-
All trains and buses shut down around the NYC area. Evacuations for some areas started earlier today. Rain has just started but still no wind...
-
Just saw that the expected traject is right over where my aunt & uncle live....I bet they will at least be out of power but they're used to that (happens once ever winter).Hope the best for all...
-
Hope you avoid any trouble, It was bad in our area during Ike...

For those who don't know or remember the story, check this post (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=487.0).
Barry (Sonic 1992) showed us the result of the Ike disaster when we were in Texas two years ago... really bad :-X

Hurricanes are no joke...
Hi everyone, back online after just getting power back!
Don't think the local destruction was as bad as hurricane Ike (awesome pics btw Barry)!

Glad to read you again Amadama :)

Yes, just looked that old thread over.... what a nightmare/experience that was. :-[
I hope everything went ok for you and all's well! :)

All is good now, thanks Barry and Bruno!
I had no power for five days. I did take the opportunity to FINALLY set up all my arcade machines up once again since my basement flooded a couple of years ago. Now I have an arcade in my garage! 16 machines at the moment!
Barry,
How are you making out in Texas now?
-
Wow, no power for 5 days....unthinkable here....
We in Holland are lucky to have soft soil . We dig all lines underground. No poles (Except for the major power lines) in the streets here...
Glad it wasn't as bad as expected...but still scary !
