Title: Play Dragon's Lair Blind
Post by: Meliw on August 06, 2011, 03:49:50 PM
Hello.
I did this video where I play Dragon's Lair without looking at the screen at all, only using the sounds, it's pretty fun.

Hello Meliw and welcome here.
Impressive indeed!
Since I'm not a big fan of blind dates I think you should now introduce yourself properly and let us know who locked you in that room with no windows until you managed to do this  ;) ;)

Hello Guillaume from Belgium (which part of Belgium?)  :)

With a such video, I offer you a wild card here... you prove you're a real Dragon's Lair Fan, so of course welcome here  ;)

I think I can guess the story : you seems a little bit young for playing Dragon's Lair in the arcade in the 80s, but ... you fortunately had the game on Sega CD back in the 90s so you played it like a mad man, and now you're still able to play it very well. You don't have a MEGA CD anymore, so that explain the 'mega cross over' config used : original Mega CD version of the game, running on a PC computer that run a Sega MEGA CD emulator... and finally use ... a PlayStation pad  :)

Your video is very impressive, because some scenes are really hard to recognize only with sounds... and you have almost no time to react and make the first move. In addition, some scenes are randomly reversed... and in that case, it's IMPOSSIBLE to guess the first move!
I remember doing something similar in the arcade, back in the 80s... but I had to see what was the stage first with me eyes, and then I continued to play that level without watching the monitor, and I can tell you the crowd behind me was very impressed  :D I must confess I was able to do that only on the easiest stages of the games :P

Now you really should try the real thing (the real arcade cabinet), or at last the 'authentic' gameplay, on Daphne emulator, or even on Playstation 3, the game has been released on the Playstation store, that version is very accurate.

I presume you're also fan of DL2 & Space Ace by the way?

Pleased to meet you both  :)
I had no idea there was such a forum about Dragon's Lair till this morning, you guys are huge fans.

Ok, for a small presentation : I'm 20, I live in Mons, Belgium (french side - 20km to France) and I'm a future teacher. I love video games in general but I'm kind of an oldschool guy (oh really ?).

You almost guested right about my story with the game, DarthNuno. I never played it on arcade. My dad and my uncle did. I indeed got the mega-cd version but I was already playing for some time on one of my dad's apple computer. He was tired of me getting in his legs so he got me that version I guess, I don't remember clearly since I was like 5 or 6 years old. Anyway most of the time I still played on the maccintosh  :D

My true generation is really the PS1. One day someone really mean decided to sell my megadrive as I didn't play with it anymore. And old macs disappear with the time. So I couldn't play Dragon's Lair for more than 10 years. A week ago, I got that old Imac G4 you can see in the background of the video (as I tried to say). It brings back old memories. In about 2 hours I was able to finish the game, 2 hours more and I managed to do it without loosing any life. I don't remember how much I played this game younger but clearly a lot, most levels came back to my memory in a second. So I said to myself (what a beautiful world) : let's do this without looking.
Then started the interesting part and I've had to play 8-10 hours to be able to do this video. I got an emulator to play it on my PC for the recording because the max resolution on mac is pretty tiny, however it's nicer.

I may surprise you but I have never played DL2 neither Space Ace but since I got this mac back (and all those memories), I surely plan to try them both.

The best DL experience is with the Daphne emulator (http://www.daphne-emu.com). I recommend checking it out if you want to play some serious Dragon's Lair

Unfortunately no, you never gave me a copy of that movie we shot in my garage some years ago.
Bye,

Matteo

Congrats, that's impressive!  :spaceace:
So every morning, first you brush your teeth, then you complete a blind DL's game or is it the other way around?  ;)

Wife & daughter went to the market, I stayed at home due to my knee-injury (a broken meniscus ! In fact the hardest part for me was goin' down from the stairs to reach my little arcade room  :'()... so why do not blindplayin' even BEFORE toothbrushing ?
 ;D

Hehe, maybe, Chris :) !

The next step is playin' BOTH Dragon's Lair and Space Ace TOGETHER, keepin' the first on my right (its cabinet) and the second on my left (the "Monolith").
Wanna see if I could even finish one of them  :-\ , maybe before I'll have to come back to my job ;) :D !
