Title: Eurocade Jukebox
Post by: level42 on April 16, 2011, 08:50:05 AM
Hey guys and girls.

Please post your requests for music that should be in the "jukebox" at Eurocade 2011 !

Remember, late 70's, 80's and maybe some early 90's only !!!!

Gotta be a bit mainstream (reasonable "hits"), so no death-metal (sorry Bruno) or classical or techno well you get it....

Also just ripped my ABC Alphabet City CD, man that was long ago that I listened to it. Some great hits on there and some excellent 12" versions of famous songs.

Remember that most of my iTunes library is 80's stuff anyway so I may have your suggestion already, else I'll try to "get" them ;)

And uhm....the cheesier, the better ! :P

Songs added:

ABC: When Smokey sings, The Night You Murdered Love,Minneapolis (not famous but it's SOOOO 80's), When Smokey Sings (The Miami Mix), The Night You Murdered Love (The Whole Story), Chicago (Abridged)

ZZ top: La Grange, Gimme Al Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, TV Dinners, Dirty Dog, If I Could Only Flag Her Down.

Ahhh, I found a sweet collection of 12"es from the 80's at our "own" flea market last weekend.

And also a couple of albums, one of them Past Present & Future from the RAH band, with the brilliant "Clouds across the moon".

Some searching on youtube and I found this brilliant B-side of the 12"....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCCL8BwcsD0&feature=related

Gotta find that 12" on vinyl !! (Already bidding....please don't shill bid ;))

A recent comment of Etienne (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2583.msg35159#msg35159) reminded me of Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SPogGqCgeM)" from the album "Look Sharp".
(Warning: scary TV host at the beginning of this video)

By the way, Codo totally made me think of another German space themed hit:
http://youtu.be/KoidJVAMAVE

Clearly remember hearing this in our local "arcade" (the one with the foosball table, pool billiard and 1 Ms.Pac :D :D)

Pretty large sum of German songs BTW....where did they all go, where are is the German pop music today ??

Did I already mention Sandra ?

Damn was I in love with her then... ;D ;D

@Chris: EXCELLENT choice.

You guys scare me ... you really do ... I was a punk back then. I liked everything that was fast, mean and hostile against society. Don't worry I will not bother you with any music whishes or stories about my moved past but I can still hardly imagine how the hell somebody could listen to that pop crap anyway. You have to explain that to me in detail, when we meet at Eurocade.  ;D
Title: Re: Eurocade Jukebox
Post by: level42 on June 09, 2011, 04:27:31 PM
I won't, discussing music it'ss a waste of time.

You can't explain lack of (our) taste, or maybe different taste.  ;D ;D ;D ;D
It's just that these songs completely bring me back....and I never liked Punk, or Rock, or Metal....

I always never was against anything. I was an 80's kid, we were going to make it big: money, fast cars, women, your own arcade at home....you know Thatcherism, Reagenomics, take care of yourself (! (oops...failed...except on one thing :D)

Don't worry you can hook up with Nuno...he's into hard and heavy  ;D ;D

Oh, allright then, I'll trow in some KISS for ya !  ;D ;D ;D

simple answer: someone who moves quickly!

BTW....where did they all go, where are is the German pop music today ??

stronger than ever. german music started getting back into the charts a couple of years ago with bands like "wir sind helden" or "juli", today there's a lot of german music on the radio - and it's really really good!

I'm a son of NWOBHM  ;)

So during the 80's, in addition with all the variety songs here and there, and thanks to my bro', I've discovered metal, punk (yes! thinks like Pistols, Exploited, GBH...), heavy metal (Maiden, Priest, Anthrax),...
And all that kind of music drove me into real instrument : drums first, than electric guitar... Hail to my first God : Kirk Hammett, my second God : Nuno Bettencourt ( ;)), and finally the third one : John Petrucci (Hail to Prog Metal)  ;D

Okkkkkeyyyy I don't expect all that stuff at the 'cade 2011... just bring me 'easy stuff' like Kim Wild, Paula Abdoul, Madonna, OST movies from Top Gun, Electric Dreams... well, all that songs I used to hear (not listened because I was playing games :P ) in the arcades, back in the 80's  ;)

I'm open to everything... except maybe German spoken songs (except Rammstein  ;D)

So....we had the Neue Deutsche Welle....now it's time for DUTCH power. We kick of with a happy little tune, I'm sure Captain Caveman is going to love this, Vitesse, with Rosalyn:

Mmmm, best song of Het Goede Doel (=The Good Cause):

http://youtu.be/ZMLHyC8B6mI

Excellent lyrics by Henk Westbroek, Holland's best lyricist in pop music !!! Simple, but brilliant words !

Notice the fake cab in the beginning of the clip, had totally forgotten they used that at Count Down !!!

This is a better sounding version...: http://youtu.be/Z5btqdEtjok

Best song by Toontje Lager: http://youtu.be/CmnZ-17sknI
The instrumental part was used in the TV program about cars "De Heilige Koe" (the holy cow) for YEARS later !

Frank Boeijen....I'm a fan of most of his music. Been to several gigs. He's brilliant, but in the end it got TOO small IMHO (almost one guy with one guitar)...

The next is one of the best Dutch songs ever IMHO... (with harmonica GOD Jean-Toots-Thielmans !!!):
http://youtu.be/T2fV_xAH5xU

....and some lovely slap-bass that is totally missed on this clip ....:S

Better audio:

Damn, how could I forget about this one.

Imagine. It is the summer of 1985. I've got my very first holiday job working at....the Burger King in Rotterdam (Lijnbaan,  they only had 1 then AFAIR).
It's morning, around 10-ish and I enter the restaurant, go down to the clothing rooms to put on my (dreaded) uniform.
In that basement area, there was a club (which I would later frequent) or disco if you want to call it like that right next to where the clothing rooms were.

When I enter the clothing room I hear this song at WHACK full level....they were playing it at the club, which was obviously closed at the time. They did have a really powerful and GREAT sounding system though...
It was the first time I heard it and I was TOTALLY sold, loved it to pieces...and still do. It was sounding SO new in those days...you can't imagine now, but it was definitely "something else" then.... I staid to listen to the entire song.

http://youtu.be/yLhYxLE8uCA

The last part of the instrumental was used in an early Atari ST shooting game....that was also pretty new, sampled music. AFAIR that was the only goo part of that game... :D

Tell me, is it just me or did Journey TOTALLY pass through here in Holland in the 80's ? I know that I don't know a single song by them.... Did they ever score a hit here ?
I think I only heard about the band until I got into this hobby and read about the cab....

Holy crap, almost had forgotten this song, but I think I will officially declare it the Eurocade song !

http://youtu.be/b9xBAtCsCTQ

I mean, Living on video....traveling through Hyperspace....and the whole song SOUNDS like an 80's game :P
It's SO wrong that it is GREAT !

First time I saw this video and it's totally CRAP of course. I mean, only 1 computer and it's a C64 without SID and VIC-2 ;) That one was already old then !

Highly suggested to close your eyes, the sound of this clip is great.

Or simply read along with the lyrics, couldn't fit better with classic arcade video games ! :

Give me light
give me action
at the touch of a button.
Flying through hyper-space
in a computer interface.
Stop - living on video
stop - integrated circuits.
Stop - sur un faisceau de lumieres
stop - is this reality?

Traveling in a light beam
laser rays and purple skies.
In a computer fairyland
it is a dream you bring to life.
Stop - living on video
stop - integrated circuits. . . .
Living on video - sur un faisceau de lumieres

I see your glitterring blue eyes
you look at me with a smile.
It's a computer fantasy
it is waiting for you and me.
Living - living on video
living - living on video

Living - living on video
living - living on video - stop. . . .

HAH, see, I am right !!!

nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_(band) (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_(band))

They never scored a hit in Holland !!! Look under Singles and Hoogste Positie (Highest Position), They never came further then the Tip list....

NOT to say it's a bad band, but it does explain why I had never heard of them BITD.

Regretfully it didn't work out to put the "Eurocade Jukebox" on at Eurocade 2011, but we must keep "collecting" for next time ;)

Here's another addition. I chose this version because I actually remember that I had videotaped this on my brothers' Sony Betamax VCR BITD:

And then...on the other hand....you have songs that you know SO well.....I bought this single BITD. I was smashed by the sampled singing (that was NEW then) but I NEVER saw the video until 2 minutes ago:

This is a different version then the single I have though, the "sampled" break near the end of the song is much shorter and far less impressive.

But that video....ghettoblasters, break-dancing, BMX-es......can't get more 80s than that :)

When we were in NYC last summer, some guys entered the subway train (we accidentally reached Harlem :P) who had a Ghetto blaster and started to Break dance like crazy while the train was running. One guy lifted himself on one hand SLOWLY up and down....totally amazing, totally muscles.
Didn't dare to video them...but gave them a buck when they went around with their hat...enjoyed the show and I love those things about NYC...

Still I'll avoid the too obvious rock-steady crew for now ;)

Another new things in the 80s was rap. I actually liked it then. First one I ever heard was Kurtis Blow with Christmas Rappin':

This was about a year before the obvious Sugarhill Gang Rappers' Delight.

Yeah yeah ! Our very own "Brit-funk" band :P Lilian is one of the best singers I've ever heard. Saw the band a couple of years ago live, still FUNKY :P

Glad you didn't chose "You and me" though....don't think I can hear that one again ;)

It's amazing how many Dutch artists performed on German TV program Musik Laden !! So many clips I find on Youtube.
This one is the first though where the artist are lip-syncing. At least al the 70's songs are performed live.

F.I. another great Dutch band: Earth & Fire:

(This one actually proves that Jerney COULD sing....besides looking totally gorgeous....)

Compare to the lip-synced version: http://youtu.be/yL6rMomAA40
(OK Jerney looks even better there :P)

You meant:

(Youtube URL's don't work between IMG tags my friend  ;D)

But I know the answer even without watching the video because it's Lucifer with House For Sale and Henny Huisman on drums...
