Title: [flea market find] - What did you find today?
Post by: Valsimot on March 23, 2011, 08:22:07 PM
I usually lurk (mostly because I have nothing good or interesting to write), but not today  :D

A few weeks ago I went to the local flea market looking for the usual: old games and old audio gear (including records). Most of the time I don't find anything interesting, but I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw these two just sitting there! A near mint DK? No way...
I picked up the DK and asked the lady how much? 2€ (15kn local currency)? I'll take the Mickey and Donald too!!!

At first I figured I'd sell them, but the DK grew on me real fast (Mickey and Donald not so much) it's a lot more fun then I expected (I usually suck at LCD games).
So anyway, now I'm looking for a case to put them in so they don't get any more scuffs =]

I haven't played any of those handhelds lately, but the one's I remember were DK and DKjr.

Back then I thought LCD games were toys. But those games were very good indeed...

Sorry Belike, the Hungarian built TV's never made it to Western Europe in those days ;) ;)

Damn....Videopac.....probably the only game console that has WORSE graphics then the 2600. Every game looked the same because of the internal characters being used....still some fun games (Happelaar !)

I've got the perfect monitor for your C64 though:

However, this will probably displaying my Atari 8 bit machines too :)

It is rumored that this monitor is the ONLY Commodore product to have ever entered Level42's house. The reason is that it really is a Toshiba inside, and it's a great partner for the A8 machines :)

Nice handhelds, the DK is also one of my all time nintendo favourite along with Green House.
I found a Mario Bros a few years ago for 2€, fully working but without battery covers.
Pretty fun (and confusing) if you try to play it simultaneously with a friend (each one controls a player).

What I've been looking for for years at flea market is a nice Milton Bradley's Simon.

But today, I'm happy ... got these two games :

Nice one's ! About that, that's a really cool feeling...I keep pretending that the SW cockpit I own now, was the one that I used to play in Scheveningen in the 80's :) There's nothing indicating that it is, it's just fun to even think it _could_ be (I _AM_ sure about that the machine has spent it's entire life in The Netherlands so there is at least some chance ;)

This weekend we organized (as every year) a flea-market at our marching band clubhouse. One guy said there was a complete NES set somewhere (I always man the "electronics" section of course) so we checked it out. Had to connect it to a really old TV so I could manually dial-in the right channel (most others needed electronic programming, which often requires going through menu's AND the correct remote which is not always included).

We almost NEVER have old game consoles or classic computers on our flea market (people put them on Marktplaats usually) so I was pretty exited to find the NES.

And it worked. There was SM2, SM3, Tetris, Boulderdash, and 2 other games I don't remember, a Game Genie and a 4 player adapter included. Also a box to store the cartridges and the manuals of the games. Also the original box was there and in excellent shape.

Good that I was there as most of the people would have sold that off for a couple of Euro's. Being there I didn't exactly know what the value's on Marktplaats are those days but we put up a price of 35 Euro on it. (We never put prices on stuff, but this was a good exception ;) ). Maybe not enough but I didn't want to go TOO high....

It was getting later and later and I was already determined to either buy it myself or sell it on Marktplaats if there wouldn't be a buyer. But suddenly a guy who had been buying some other stuff (for the prices we asked, no bargaining as usual) said, OK I want that Nintendo. I was a bit disappointed in one way, but on the other hand, we earned some good money for the club. Also, I really don't need yet ANOTHER gaming device, I'm actually thinking of selling some stuff already...(non-arcade I mean).

We also sold an incredible lot of CRT TV's this year. It's so strange, the last couple of years, the "market" for those TV's was getting worse and worse (lower prices, less demand ;)) but this was a VERY good year, and we actually had LOADS of them. One guy (they usually are immigrants who most likely export them to their home country) bought 12 of them for a fixed price per unit....nice guy to deal with compared to some of his "colleagues".....

Next year, I'm going to talk to the guys at our club who organize it and say I will pay a little if I can "operate" on all the remaining TV's for a while. I plan on removing all the rubber wedges, convergence strips and convergence rings. Normally all stuff remaining (except for books and cloths) always end up in this:

but the electronics are not longer allowed to go in there, we have to put those in a separate container for environmentally friendly handling.

Sooooo, what did I buy myself ? Well, a number of very nice 80's 12" vinyl and this:

Yep....another type-writer. Am I starting a new hobby ? No. I've been working on the IBM selectric and I can't get it to print reliably with an even spacing. Also, the IBM's are DAMN heavy and HUGE. Although I now have the perfect letter ball, the spacing of the letters would completely ruin any serial tag repro.
There were of course a number of typewriters at the flea-market, most were the standard mechanical "suitcase" typewriters, and one was actually one with a small CRT and floppy drives, so more a complete text machine from Olivetti. I tried two mechanical machines to see the font. They were very close to what we need. Only the numbers are a bit different. Then I found this electronic one and thought that could be ideal for our job. Checked the font, and while it is NOT 100% perfect, the letters do look identical but again the numbers are slightly different.

I figured that it would be better to have a slightly different font then an unreliable spacing which would ruin stickers.

And I bought it for a pretty good price at 1 Euro  ;D ;D ;D ;D

It's also very portable and light-weight. Some interesting trivia: it's a former DDR product by a company called.....ROBOTRON (http://robotrontechnik.de/) ! :P

Post by: Superully on May 15, 2011, 11:46:52 AM
nice story, andré, thx for sharing!

regarding the typewrite: what do you mean by saying that you can't get the ibm machine print with an even spacing? why not? how about some pics in the appropriate topic?
Title: Re: [flea market find] - What did you find today?
Post by: level42 on May 15, 2011, 11:59:27 AM
The distance between the letters are not even. Usually some letters even partly are OVER each other. We really do not want that. I've lubed the machine the best I could but it doesn't help.

I've been Googling on info about this problem and the only solution I found was: "bring it in for service". Now.....I don't think there's still (m)any people who could fix this, and I don't want to think about the costs of fixing it. The issue has something to do with the wires that are used to position the head....very mechanical stuff, and I'm allergic to mechanical stuff ;)

I will put some scanned print-outs (also of the new one) on the proper thread....

thx andré! so basically this means that your machine is broken?
Title: Re: [flea market find] - What did you find today?
Post by: level42 on May 18, 2011, 10:59:24 AM
Yup. I tried to do a compare 2 days ago and now I only get junk from the IBM....it's getting worse....

So, there's no real way back, I'll scan and upload how it looks with the new typewriter, I really think everyone will be able to live with that, and if not peole can always order the blank labels and try to emboss the letters in their own way.

I forgot to mention that on the flea market I also found a poster from an old computer magazine, I think it was called [cough-cough] Commodore User [graghaghgggghaaaghggggh-cough] and has some Barbarian styled artwork on it. Didn't have a close look yet. Will make a pic and post tonight.

Also I found a four-way Gameboy thing (http://www.quickerbuy.com/assets/photo/avatar/157750/big_nintendo-game-boy-four-player-adapter-dmg-07.jpg) If anyone is interested in those, let me know.

Very nice !! That'll run a cab or 5 at least :)

Robin is great at scanning flea-markets.

We have one every year at our music club and Robin scored a totally fantastic record player last year for a great price, mainly because I was not there on the friday evening (because I would have picked it out and bought it myself OR would have priced it correctly ) ;)

Forgot the brand, but it was a totally high quality one. Funny story, Robin told all the other people were "fighting" about the lousy quality all-in-1 sets and old TV's (mainly immigrant people, our best customers...) and they were amazed that he picked out that "worthless" vinyl player.... ;D ;D

Remind me of the brand please Robin. It has a _massive_ platter...and beautiful tone arm...

Well, not tested so far... but I'm confident, these 8bit systems are strong as a rock! :P

What are the 'must have' games on Master System?

Personally I think consoles can be emulated so perfectly that they don't deserve it to be bought in real any longer. With arcade games and VFD handhelds it is a total different story. But some consoles are exceptions, so I bought them anyway. I mean, a NES with an old CRT and orange gun is the only way to play Duckhunt. A Vectrex can't be emulated accurately too, and I have the best looking console just for looks, the Videopac G7200. But, the Master System has a special thing too. It is the 3D glasses. We all think 3D is a thing from this era, but go find yourself a Zaxxon for Master System with a set of 3D goggles. It rocks, and can't be emulated properly. A SMS with 3D glasses and Zaxxon 3D is somewhere on my wishlist. Problem: the Zaxxon is easy to find, but the glasses in good condition aren't.

Last weekend it was the yearly flea-market (Rommelmarkt) at our music club again. This time I was there on the friday too. Last year I wasn't and some smart guy on this forum scored a very nice Linn record player for close to nothing.... ;)

However, this time I had to go through the stuff we had.....I noticed a Nintendo 64 and an XBOX. I decided no more game stuff so they sold (pretty quickly and I have no idea about how much they earned).

Between the loads of 80's and 90's audio "sets" which are worth very little in audio quality sense, there were a nice Onkyo and Yamaha receiver, both in classy woodgrain  ;D

Something I scored for myself was an old electrical heater. I'm not going to use it to heat something though...it has one of those tangential fans inside it. These cost a lot when bought new and they produce a lot of air flow over a wide area compared to relatively low noise.
I am looking if it may be a good idea to use it in my SW cockpit.

Also, when the market was almost at it's end I opened a couple of the left over CRT TVs to get some of these out of them:

I need some for Franck's WG6100 since it has none (!) and I got three for spare. Regretfully none of these TVs had convergence strips.

I must say we sold a lot of CRT TVs, most to immigrants who are traders. Not sure if they send them to their original country or something...but we are happy with them :)

However, the biggest find for me was a very nice receiver I had been looking for for some time. A Marantz 2226B.
This one is from the era that Marantz was still designed in the US and built in Japan and is seen as one of the best quality audio equipment ever built. The sound is reported to be very good and warm....here is an internet picture of one:

I love the blue scale lighting. The one I've got is missing a foot (easy fix) and most of the lamps are defective. Already found them on the internet though. The volume and balance pots will require a very thorough cleaning too, Robin already gave me some tips about that...

The front of mine is almost mint. I see no scratches, all buttons etc. are there. Maybe a bit of cleaning required but that's it. Found a date saying it was built in 1977.

I hope to install this in the game room to have some really fitting music equipment there :) Can't wait to give it a test run on my B&W 600's though :P

Great find André.
My brother had a Marantz tape player. I remember we used it to repair... tapes for computers! Let me explain that  ;D
I had tapes full of *cough cough* copied games for my Schneider CPC464 (Amstrad is the UK/French name). Some tapes I got were 'unreadable' by the computer ... result of copy of a copy of a copy of the original games  :P
With the help of that magical Marantz, we saved some of these tapes... by increasing the level during the copy on the target tape!
It sounds stupid and so simple by now, but at the time... I saw that Marantz like ...the savior of my games!  ;D
By the way, my brother wasn't happy I was using its 'high end' audio equipment for a such purpose  ;D

Anyway, I love the idea to use vintage hardware in a vintage game room of course.... sounds so logical after all :) Your 'high end' Marantz will rock in your game room!

@Bruno: Hah, great story !! I bet some of those tapes had been copied with tape-decks that could do hi-speed dubbing. I remember a guy at school used about 8 or so of these to run production runs of bootleg "hit parade" tapes. He earned some nice money with it ! Of course I was to scared to do stuff like that...didn't want to get busted ! He used cheap-ass tape decks though, as usual with compact cassette there were speed differences and head-alignment differences not to mention the Dolby noise reduction problems...

You know what the first Basic program was that I wrote for my Atari 600XL ? A tape copy program ! :)
I "stole" some code from a program that wrote bytes to (and read from) tape. What it basically did was simply opening a channel for reading from tape, reading the "file" byte by byte into a string array (RAM) and once it was complete it could do it the other way around. To my utter surprise it actually worked ! The main reason for needing this was that (unlike the C64 f.i.) the Atari could boot from tape. This prevented normal copying of those files, but it worked fine with my Basic program. The great advantage of this was that it produced fresh copies :)

Man....those were the days....waiting 20 minutes to get Pitfall II loaded....the + about that was that you didn't just put it down and quickly loaded up another game.... ;)

I have plans to build the Marantz in the middle wall of the game room (where the power switches are). That way I will only have the front and controls there and the "rest" in the storage ;) The edge of the front plate is perfect for this :P

@Robin, yeah I remember having seen it, I didn't sell it though. I do think there was yet another Marantz tape deck but in less condition...congrats !!! :) (By the way, clever to send your friend to "fool" me  ;) ;)  ;D ;D ;D LOL !)

I was throwing out an old TV in the recycling centre, when I went into the container to place the TV inside, I saw these neatly by the door.

so, I took them home.  I know this isn't a flea market exactly, but ok..

Combat was complete, box manual and game.
Warlords, box only - I'm looking for the cart cheap on ebay, no rush.
Slot Racers, Box only - just got the cart on order from ebay for £0.99
Another space invaders - this makes 4 in the collection
Super Breakout - I didn't have this one.

In recent weeks/months I have had these from flea markets.

Planet Zeon - Tomy Tronic
Thundering Turbo - Tomy Tronic
Packri Monster - Bandai Electronics
Missile Invader - Bandai Electronics
Pocket Simon - MB Electronics

I don't recall exactly what I paid, I think something stupid like £0.20 for the Bandai's, maybe £1 for Simon, and I did pay £10 each for the Tomy, but that's still very good.

All work.

Yihaaaaaa !

I guess everybody knows about my Suzo leaf joystick fetish. I've owned one since I bought it new in 1984 and it never failed me.
It even made me DK WR holder on the A8 :)

I've been looking for a 2nd exact same one for a couple of years because these beasts are RARE.
They were the very first home-sticks that Suzo made. Not much later, they switched to micro-switches. Although they are still great sticks I don't like the clickety sound and feel of them as much as the all-leaf version.

So....last tuesday I was at the music club (familiar for the early Eurocade crew) for the weekly rehearsal. Every year, our club organizes a flea-market to raise money for the club. Goods are already piling up in the center room of the clubhouse and of course I look if there are some interesting things there. Usually it's not much...with few exceptions (like my awesome stools).

This time though I noticed that there was a boxed Amiga 500. There was a nice note on the outside saying it was not functioning anymore  but that it was probably something simple. There was also a 1541 floppy drive in a box ('untested" it said) and a C64 datasette.

I'm having a look at that stuff, maybe to get some myself (if I can get the Amiga running) for a good price for both me and the club, but maybe also to raise the value for sale a bit. What I found next made me jump from excitement though:
I recognized it immediately because the all -eaf stick has a BLACK handle. The micro-switch version has a red handle.

Picked it up and moved the stick....YESSSSSS this is leafsssssss :)

I noticed that the connector is a bit different and has "AMP" on it. Maybe it has been replaced at one time.

When I turned it over I saw this....now this is funny AND interesting.
There is a black label that says "Made in the UK" but it is EASY to see that under that there is "Competition Pro" and "Made in the US" under it, probably it was in the mold of the base because it feels structured.

Now, I KNOW that these were built in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I even sent Suzo a mail a couple of months ago to ask about this and they confirmed. There are also several ads from the UK and the US saying "Made in....their country".

Looks like Suzo was "twisting the truth" a bit for the sake of business....

Anyway.....I bought this pre-flea-market for a nice price for both sides and I'm HAPPYYYYYY :D

Yep, that's the most common micro-switch version. Definitely a great stick too and most people prefer that one but usually because they never encountered the leaf version.

Does anybody want a tested working Commodore 1541 floppy disk drive ? We've got one on our yearly flea market and nobody seems interested in any of the Commodore stuff. We also have a defective C64 with all big chips on socket and a defective Amiga 500 which looks really nice, absolutely no discoloring on that one, maybe nice for a transplant. Has a memory expansion card with RAMS on sockets but they are too large size for classic arcade games (maybe some late 80s boards will like them ?)

Also found one of those portable radios with a tiny 4" B/W CRT TV inside. Awesome for making a small pong model ;);) but I'm not going to do it. Regretfully it doesn't have a video input on the outside, but that can always be hacked in :)

Let me know if anyone wants any of this for a very low price, money goes to the marching band I am member of.

Ask your customers what they want and then give it to them.

I did that, and they had some good ideas, and they're actually looking pretty hard for some stuff.

Now it's about providing it to them.

But what if I don't have what customer's want Michael? What is the secret to your success - is it spamming arcade forums?

I've just won a B&O 25" tv that's destined for my Death race.  £1.04 on ebay, but *it suddenly stopped working*, so hopefully it's just a fuse!

I hope it comes with the remote, bitch to set up without one, if not impossible, if its a BEO4 it's worth more than the TV, but good find.

If for some reason you are stuck, and need to tune it, or open up the scart sockets, (yes sometimes they are turned off), give me a PM and I'll loan you my BEO4 remote.

Scored three arcade monitors TV, perfect size & well curved!  :)

...grab them when it's still time... and even now, they are not so easy to find... grab them as max as possible!

True, they are getting more rare !

I still prefer to pick up real arcade monitors though and I find some once in a while (mostly Hantarex) but for sure TVs with SCART are a GREAT alternative to have on storage.....that is also the problem.....SPACE ! :)

14" Sony Trinitron for free, not from a flea market, from a freebie post on Gumtree.co.uk

Cleaned up nice, will go in a Galaxian cocktail hopefully via the Scart method. Seems to work great so far.

You just can't leave a Sony Trinitron go to the recycle centre.

O yes I can. Never been a Trinitron fan plus everything Sony I have had failed in one point of time.....looks like you're lucky.

Apart from my personal preferences trinitrons were never used in classic arcade machines and you will see the difference, especially in vertical games like Galaxian. If you're not an "original addict" like me it will work just fine of course. And free is always good ;)

Never had such bad luck with Sony, only good things to report luckily.   It's a great way to get this machine running, and not with a crap LCD like many do.  Not easy to find a working monitor for a cocktail where I am unfortunately.

Guess I was unlucky with my Sony devices but it happened so often to me that I'll never buy the brand again....only Sony I got now is a PS3 for my son.

Can't you find any Commodore 1084 or Philips CM8833 monitors in your area ? They regularly show up here for low prices:

They are ideal for cocktails. But yes indeed, anything CRT is way better than crappy LCD :)

I might just try that....guess what, the wonderful free Sony TV I got, and I was so happy with......does not have a way to force the scart on via a powered scart lead.

So placing this in a cocktail and having a remote handy to switch to AUX....I don't think so.  So the quest continues., but for this free sony, it goes to the grave.  Thanks for the tips on the monitors, could be perfect,  will check this.

Do you have any consoles ?  the sony would be a nice set to use for that instead of sending it to the graveyard IYAM.

I have a few B&O's to take care of consoles. :spaceace:
It's not gone yet, but I can't see any use here.    I've placed it on freeads, that way I'll sleep better. Looking for commodore monitor now, I like that idea.

Actually it game from a cellar box under my office in the Hague where I put it myself.  ;D I got it for free when I picked up a Galaxian about two years ago. I was strongly encouraged to take the box with old pcb's. The guy wanted to clean up his storage.  :)
