Title: [Roadtrip] The Raiders of the lost Zacc
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on January 14, 2011, 10:20:11 AM
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/raiders_zaccaria.jpg)

This is the story of the 2 guy's that teamed up to save a part that was lost during transport (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1768.msg19130#msg19130).
This is a real story, and is based on true events that occurred   ::)

An early attempt to save the artwork (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1996.msg22863#msg22863) by scanning, vectorising and reproducting was done, but we had a lucky break when Ronald pointed (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1647.msg27489#msg27489) us to a Zacc with the original Bezel!

I saw in the marktplaats pics that the coindoor decal was uncracked and that the door seems to be unscratched.(mine is cracked and has scratches.. :-\)

Now what to do  ??? As you know i don't have space for a second cab, but some spare parts are always welcome.
I decided to send the seller an email with some information questions about the cab ::)

Later i checked my mail, and i received a request from Bela if i could contact the seller, wich i already did at that time..
i had a feeling he would ask me that..  8)

So Bela and me made a deal, he pays the cab, i pick it up, strip the parts he need, and keep the rest.

from now on we like to call ourselfs "the raiders of the lost zacc"  ;D

I made the offer to the seller with the amount of cash that bela told me, and the seller agreed.

ROADTRIP TIME !  8)

I work in Zoetermeer and in Den haag, so i decided to leave my job early on the day of the pickup and drive to the seller after work.

Here is the route that i took last week when i picked up the cab.

Starting at Point F is my home.
I travelled to point B wich is my job in Zoetermeer.
After work i drove to point C wich is where the cab was located.
and from the sellers place i took some detours to avoid traffic jams back home.

6.46 a.m. Usual time to leave for work, only this time i will bring my little trailer.
The last pickup (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2005.0) i did in Bela36 style (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1518.0), but that was close to my place, and it was good weather..

Let me see, Toolbox; check, Tarp; check, Straps; check, Lots of other junk  :D, check

Ladies and gentleman, Start your engines !  :D

Hmmm rain and traffic jam..  does not look good  :-\

Arrived at work in the parking, i disengaged the trailer and put it next to my car in a "deadspot"

I stopped working around 3 p.m. and its time to head for Zaandam.

No roadtrips without snacks & coffee ;)

Passing Schiphol Airport..

And another traffic jam at Amsterdam...
18 minutes delay through the "coentunnel"   >:(

First glance of the Zacc at the sellers location.

Time to load this one.
I removed the monitor, Bezel and Marquee because i don't want them in the trailer with a change of possible damages..

The rest goes in the trailer   :P

It was a bit rainy this day, so i wrapped the tarp around it to protect it.
There is still some plaster leftovers on from the rebuilding of my house.

5 p.m. Time to start the trip home!

A little break at the gasstation, just to check if everything was still strapped and safe.
i dont want to loose the cab on the highway  ;)

Breda north, thats my Exit, almost home  :)

7:38 p.m. Safely arrived at home  8)

Time to unload the cab, my friend helped me to unload it and bring the stuff into the house.

Time for a little inspection and put the parts back inside again.
you may ask why, but if you have children, then you know why  :D
The locks where drilled already, so it was easy to open

I noticed that the T-moulding and wood surfaces on this cab are in better conditions than mine, so i decided to transplant all my CK stuff in this cab, that gives me 2 advantages; 1. better looking 2. the cab can go to my mother where i can transplant the stuff and then ditch the old CK so there is only one again in my mothers place....  or not.. and leave it there, its upstairs already then, and she will not bring it down  :D
We will see what happens.....

this label indicates that it was a Comidar before they converted it to Timepilot84
I think i will leave it there, this gives some soul to the cab   :P

Back of the cab is never looking nice with the zacc's if you ask me
poorly painted and looks dirty..

It looks like this machine made his money  ;)

Time Pilot 84 Original Konami PCB inside..
Anyone interested ? i don't need it...

After putting it back together, i fired it up.
Looks like there is a problem with the monitor..

this was also in the sellers place, so it was not due to my transporting
Looks like the blue is missing, although i see some purple wich comes from blue.
Or is that a matter of degaussing...
don't know, will test it on my CK, and see what it does.

In the coinbox i found some guilders, and i tried one to see if the coinmech is working.
i could not get the guilder in, something seems to have jammed the coinslot...
lets find out...

only 9 guilders where stuck in there  :D
Now its working !

My wife asked me what i am going to do with this cab in the kitchen..

I said, well, the dog will guard it for the time beeing ..
After that i started to sing a great 80's song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JChE5WpZFLU) ;D

I will post again when there are developments  ;)

Statistics:
Breda - zoetermeer 72Km - 2 hours
Zoetermeer - zaandam 68 Km - 1 hour 15 minutes
Zaandam - Breda 145 Km - 2 hour 39 Minutes due to traffic jams..

Total time 6 hours 32 minutes
Total Km. 285

Maybe the monitor just needs to be degaussed, did you try that red button on the back of the cab?

I'm really dancing around in joy and sending my mega thanks for Etienne for picking it up. ;)
Great roadtrip, I didn't know you have a trailer btw., I thought it was the "kamikaze" style transport. 8)

Thanks for the headline bruno !
cool banner !  :spaceace:

@bela; Yes, i picked up that trailer without the "white" part, so basicly it was just a chassis with wheels  ::)
Long live Marktplaats ! , i got hold of that trailer for 10,- €  :D

And this was too far away and rainy to do a trip with the cab hanging half out of the back  ;D

Best roadtrip name (and soundtrack) of the year so far  ;D

I'm just wondering the possible history of this cab, originally it was Comidar (Amidar clone), now it has a Time Pilot pcb, Crazy Kong bezel and the cpo was disappeard. This baby didn't have an easeful life, but she is in the best hands by now. ;)

well it was not totally selfless, i have profit of this too
the cab will be again transformed to crazy kong  ;D

So, the story continues here;

Time to slaughter this cab out

My son discovered that it was not working anymore, and tried to put in a guilder and see if it works then  :P

Its not working dad !

Also its so dark inside..., hmm let me see what i can do about that...

Yes ! a flashlight will work dad !

I tried to explane to hime that i need to take it apart, and later he can play again with "the monkey" when we visit grandma.
he looked at me with a face like "dad you cannot do that!, its not good to destroy things"
but i already took my boxes for bits and pieces and this zacc needs to go under surgery..
(i did not call doctor MAD (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1815.msg27847#msg27847) for this, but i think i can also perform the operation ;D)

First i removed carefully the precious bezel and marquee.

Both glass so i packed them straight into styrofoam bags and secure them.

Next Item, The board.

Halfway there  8)

When i was doing shopping last week in my local Aldi, i found that there was a gas solder tool in offer.
I could ofcourse not resist to put it in my shopping wagon  ::)

Lets try my new tool to remove the wires from the coindoor.
That works like a charm !

Anybody in need for some wires  ;D

Marquee light fixture and board documentation.

Look dad, i found another coin !

Control panel..

Found some label in the bottom of the cab.
does anybody recognise it  ???

Cab empty, and parts in boxes..

Ready to transport this and donate it to my Crazy kong so he will have a nice cosy home  :D

delivery pictures soon  ;)

Very interesting to follow, you have a cute assistant! ;D
Title: Re: [Roadtrip] The Raiders of the lost Zacc
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on January 15, 2011, 10:42:18 PM
Thanks, he wants to help me, and like this things as far as i can judge from his behaviour  ;D

After i slaughtered the cab out, its time to bring the empty shell to my mothers attic.

The neighbour was so friendly to help me carry the cab upstairs and in and out of the trailer.

Very short roadtrip this time  ;)
1,8 Km one way  :D

Already i put a little table for repairing works at my mothers, and the monitor that came with the cab is now on the table, ready to check it out.

The two zacc's upstairs, it was again two stories up through narrow stairs, but no damages..

The two brothers look cool together  8)

Yes crazy kong, that is your donor  ;D

This damaged T-moulding will soon not be yours anymore..

For now you two need to guard the entrance to the room  8)

and another shot of the two guards  :D

After the transplantation, i will decide what to do with the leftover cab that now houses my Crazy Kong.

don't know it yet, its tempting to keep it too  :)

we will see what the future brings..

Title: Re: [Roadtrip] The Raiders of the lost Zacc
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on January 16, 2011, 02:50:38 PM
Now that the cab is slaughtered out, its time to test some things.

Brry71 was interested in the PCB, and i wanted to make sure the "red" issue is not caused by the board, because i dont like selling rubbish.

So i digged up the testpanel (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=787.0) that i made in the past.
the old wireharness is still intact, so i only need to connect the wires to the test controlpanel and we are good to go  ;)

I also had a spare cp cable with plug so i solderd that in place.
in this way i dont need to cut off the connector and can keep the cable unmodified.

At my mothers, i "borrowed" some power from my CK  ;D

The red was not there on my CK monitor, so the board looks fine.
After looking at the monitor i found a loose wire..

Hmm no wonder that the use of the degauss button did not make any difference, this is the cable to the coil  ::)

After i degaussed the monitor manual with my degaussing coil, the colors came back  :P

A video of my "helper" testing the board can be found here.

(http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/A_ipLAA0u5g/default.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_ipLAA0u5g) click the pic..

As for the degaussing, i did a little video too:

(http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/tsBlmlT2Hes/default.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsBlmlT2Hes) click the pic..

It looks like both the board and the monitor are fine, exept for the loose connector wich came out of the board.
but thats a easy fix.

do you want to solder that yourself bela?, or do you want me to take care of that ?

Time for mission number 2;

I dont want that the bezel that needs to be shipped to hungary breaks, so i have decided to go with the "dartnuno ultra protection packaging method" (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=542.msg17966#msg17966)  ;D

all dressed up like a waiter, i am ready for some woodworking  ;)

Little helper, can you bring the delicate bezel here please ?

Thank you Xander, i'll take it from here  :D

Some spare pieces of wood i had lying around

One part cut, one more to go.

Some screws will hold it together  ;)

After making the two borders, im checking if it fits and that i did not make any measure mistakes..

4 borders ready, and it fits good.

used some bubble wrap, to give it maximum protection.

An old handle makes a nice suitcase of this sandwich  ;D

To test the durability i dropped the suitcase from 1 meter to the ground....

Noooo   just kidding ofcourse !  ;D

Ready for transport, although i thought something was missing, so i put on a label  :D

Everything ready for now, lets see what the delivery options are.
already speaking with chris and thwocker..

Etienne, you are the Master! ;D :-*
That wooden box looks awesome, now we have a generic suitcase for transporting Zaccaria style bezels, it will also come in handy to exchange Erik's Scramble bezel! ;)
Your tutorial movies are also great, nice to see your Mom and Son playing arcade games and I've never seen a degaussing coil in action before. :D
Please solder that wire to it's correct place, unless you don't want an electronic noob to nuke that beautiful monitor. ;D
Sending my huge thanks for spending your time with my Ck projects in the past few months! :-*

I just saw this excellent piece of work of Etiènne and I thought exactly the same.  :D :D  Once you get the bezel you could send the scramble bezel to me and I will send this bezel to you.  :)

my wife complained that i was going to do woodworking in my "good" jeans instead of my "worker" jeans, and i was not in the mood to change clothes, so she "dressed" me

and sometimes i just like to look silly

Let's all indicate on the case how many kilometers it travelled and put your signature behind it. :D
Lol, great idea! ;D
+1! and maybe a sticker from each countries it travelled too  ;D

Make it a logbook: Date sent and place sent from-date received and place of arrival then the km's behind it ;)

I made a little excel File:

(http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/zaccraiders/packing/logbook.jpg) (http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/zaccraiders/packing/logbook.zip)

Click on the picture to get the file.

I printed 5 pieces, and put them in protective foil, so if the logbook is full, print some more  ;D

:spaceace: :spaceace: Let's make bets how long it takes to fill up the first page. I would say one year. The one who wins gets a free (postage) delivery for his next bezel transport, to be paid by the sender of that bezel.  ;D ;D

Please solder that wire to it's correct place, unless you don't want an electronic noob to nuke that beautiful monitor. ;D

Time to come back to this, because chris is picking this up soon ;)

I pulled the chassis from the monitor and grabbed a brush to take out the most of the dust and dirt

Ofcourse i cannot do the job without the help from my "little Helper"

Hmm, this looks very good, i need to do a capkit in the near future on a simular monitor..
i can leave most of the boards in place.. wonderful !

with the help of my little helper i took out the powerboard... ready to fix  :D

Also here a wire was loose in the solderjoint  :-\
reflowed that too ofcourse...

After fixing, the connector back in place.

To check if the monitor still works after putting it back together, i shot a little video;

click the pic to play.

I tried the degauss button, and saw a little "bounce" in the screen, but its hardly visible in the video..

But since i already degaussed it manual, i think it will be fine..

I was thinking about everyone putting some typical local product in there, but that's probably not a good idea for the bezels and transport companies (in case of food-stuff ;) )
Maybe a postcard from your town ;)

If Erik -or anyone else- wants to restore the missing chips of paint, I've got some nice dvd's from Marvin.
On one these dvd's they show how to restore a pinball's backglass (pro-tip: use a shade of paint that's slightly lighter because the paint darkens when it dries)

Nice flight-case btw, love the loging info sheet !

Oeps.  ::)

I didn't notice those damages on the bezel we were talking about here: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2127.0, and I still don't. And I noticed that the bottom 'stickers' are missing on the bezel above. Are you sure that it is the same one?  ;)  Anyway, it just shows how pictures can make stuff look beautiful and mint.

However, the bezel is a bit too much damaged for my taste. If you don't mind Bela, please keep the bezel in your wonderful collection, I will keep my bezel. I know that it is not original, but it still looks beautiful.

OOOps Erik, sorry for the misunderstanding, I didn't mean that one in that Scramble cabinet, I just dropped that cabinet at my old friends place with the monitor I received from Etienne, he will make a fully working machine from it in a week and I will convert my other Scramble to a Super Cobra.;)
I read once more I wrote in that topic, maybe it was not 100% clear, sorry:
I have a very nice spare Scramble bezel, I think the best place will be in your cab for it, I'm up for the swap!
That was meant another bezel from my Zaccaria bezel collection, I didn't plan to take that Scramble apart.
If you would like a really nice one, this guy have tons of NOS Zaccaria glasses, I just received some from him, they are in mint condition.
https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2363.0
Sorry for the misunderstanding again.
