Friday, 22nd of October 2010... a new adventure to come... for a very special game  :)

Here's the stuff for this journey :

A brand new T-Shirt of one the oldest video game on earth, GPS, batteries for my camera, wallet full of €€€, cans of diet coke , and a music CD especially made for this road trip, that includes :

- Slash 'Slash'
- Jimmy Hendrix 'Valley Of Neptune'
- Rihanna 'Rated R'
- Slayer 'World Painted Blood'
- Guns N' Roses 'Chinese Democracy' (live)
- Marty Friedman 'Tokyo Jukebox'
- Avenged Sevenfold 'Nightmare'

 8) :P

Very very cold these days : -4° C !

Ok, let's set the hyperspace to the Paul50s system... inside a country called Germany...

All systems clear... 5:52am... ready to go!

Caution on these small village roads...

First thing to do... put gas... I usually do that the day before the road trip, but fortunately, Luxembourg is on my way... so here's already a first stop :

WipeOut picture style...

After the Luxembourg border, here's the German one...

Are you sure we are in Germany? Yes Sir  ::)

Further evidence? See that BK sign...

...and, as always, I HAVE to stop here!

Mhhh....  :-\ ... 8h31am ... too early of course... closed! B plan ...croissants!

now crossing (der-die-das)? Rhein

...close to an other super structure?

Almost there...

...and the very first one (or one of the very fist ones) ... a kind of 'Graal' for pinball collectors

...talking about 'Graal', I'm here for this one 8)

PONG  :-* No need to say anything else... one word : PONG!  :-*

...and because I'm a real fan (who's wearing a Pong T-Shirt in 2010?) ...

...I can bring it back and add it to my ... well... *never ending* collection  ::) :P  8)

Loading time

...and after a nice moment -as always- with Paul (thanks again for bring that cabinet from US for me  :-*), it's time to bring back at home this Panini card number #2, who was missing in my Arcade Collection Book  ;D

16:42 ... 676 KM !!! I HATE TRAFFIC JAM

Ok, finally out of there...

Things are getting better... and even better when I realize I have an original PONG in my car  8)

Not so far from my home now...

Bye Bye Germany... welcome to Luxembourg...

Argh! Traffic Jam?! Not again...not here... so near from my home  :(

After so many KM, it's time to refuel the car ... Luxembourg is the best place for that in Europe  :-*
Hey see...an other collector ... nice car  8)

...and two months later... hey...It's Christmas! The perfect time to release that -unpublished & exclusive- road trip and show you how to substitute a Christmas Tree by a cool Christmas Pong  :-*

I'll details later all about this cabinet, but in short : the game is working fine  :-* :-* :-* , except the potentiometer from the second player who need to been cleaned or replaced ... so nothing hard  ;D

Just for your eyes... no need to comment these pictures  :-*

i've been waiting for this for a long time - knew this roadtrip was coming ;). what a giganto-fabulous addition to your collection, bruno! now you've got what i'm still longing for: computer space AND pong. don't you think it would look totally kickass if your computer space were yellow? what a sight that would be!

nevertheless, well done - must have cost you some serious bucks though, but totally worth it, especially since the game is working. i'll have to do some practice on my rally and then we can head off face to face: two old dudes, two white lines, one white block - PONG :spaceace:

Respect!
Great neighbour for that Computer Space.

I think it is good with the blue Computer Space. Yellow is the original indeed, but yellow and blue is a nice match too. I would love to have the white one some day...
Happy Christmas with the three of you!

Maybe you can make a Christmas barn setup with your cabs.

PONG as baby Jesus.
You and miss as Jozeph and Mary.
Computer Space, Star Wars and Dragons Lair as the three wise men.
Angels Mr and Ms PacMan
The rest of the cabs as sheep around it.

Thanks to all of you for your nice comments  :-*

especially since the game is working. i'll have to do some practice on my rally and then we can head off face to face: two old dudes, two white lines, one white block - PONG :spaceace:
I've exactly same problem than your Rally regarding one potentiometer... should be an easy fix... just have to check what is the potentiometer model.
Yes, you can practice on your Rally... because I'll challenge you on Pong when we'll meet together  ;)

Is there anything you haven't got??

Yes... a Sega R360, Kung Fu Master, EDOT, Starhawk ... and ... well ... some other 'relatively more easy' games to catch (I mean more easy than Computer Space or Pong for example  8)) I still don't have like Asteroids, Assault, ...I would like also to add one or two mechanical games also... and why not more pinballs... without talking about dozens of 'nice to have' games to add  ::)
So I'm afraid I still have the virus  ;D

Awesome! Lovin' the Dragon's Lair Animation Cel too. Is that yours? Superb shot of Dirk!

Yes, I've used that Dragon's Lair Cel in order to hide the box of diet coke -used to maintain the garlands on the PonG-  ;D
Once my new game room finished, I'll frame & display all these Dragon's Lair / Space Ace Cels 'proudly' on the walls  :P

Great neighbour for that Computer Space.

Yeps Blanka, next time you'll be able to make great pictures of the two games  ;)

Original hardware inside ? :)

Yeps, original board.
Note that the two knobs are not the same... very similar but not the same.
I'll take a lot of picture of this baby.  :)

It's funny... I remember 4 years ago... in the GAME ON UK exhibition (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=192.0), both games were there... flashback  ;)

Of course, I was hoping to own both of them one day... but didn't really expected to have them so 'quickly' at the end (does 4 years is quick?). So everything happens... hey, it's the magic of Xmas after all  ::) ;D :P

but please get rid of the xmas decoration on it, it doesn't look good, in fact it's a sacrilege.  ;)

How time flies... more than 1 year later, and no more update on this? Shame on me !

Ok, that Pong is since a long time 'cleaned' of course... I didn't repeated the XMAS Pong tree this year  :) :

Found this in the 'coin reject'... yes! It's made in USA  ;D

Now let's find its identity... Damn it! No serial number sticker  :-X ... it was supposed to be here

Thanks to Etienne, it will be possible to reproduce it, but I would like to use its real serial number, so let's check inside the cabinet if I can find it somewhere...

Mhhh nothing so far...

...maybe the value printed on the board "0920" ?

Let's check the rest of the cabinet... Well, the PONG is almost an empty box as you can see ...

Love to find old 'things' hidden on the cab  :P This time, it's this

I presume it's the box from the current potentiometers used to replace the original ones... to check!

Hey, I didn't notice... I have the original backdoor sheet  :)

Closer...

OK, I need some help now regarding the *missing* serial number. Is there some PONG owners here (Alpha1, Atarimania, ?) who have the SN on their Pong ?
I need the exact size of this sticker

I didn't find any value inside the cabinet, expect the value printed on the board. Does the SN would match that value for you ? Thx for help guys  8)

Gotta love that Hitachi TV in there ! It still has the areal, with some modding you can watch TV too ;););) (unless you guys dont have analogue terrestial TV transmitters
anymore like we....)

Something I never noticed, the operator always had to empty the coin "scale" through the backdoor !!! Not very handy...

And funny they say "PONG Computer" in that backdoor sheet....it doesnt have a processor, but technically I think you can say that it has inputs, outputs and some processing going on so yes, it's a computer allright ;););)

It looks like a "cutoff version of the : "Old Atari Serial sticker"

would you like to cut it off yourself, or do you want me to cut it off ?  ;D

And another question, do you want to use a typewriter, or do you want the serial printed like in the pic, and if you want it printed, do you want "regular" (VPI)  or "Bold" AA-0920 ? as the font properties ?

Let me know please, i am finishing the files to take to the printers soon

Thanks !

Interesting read about the SN used for PONG :

The machines were numbered at the manufacturing plant and a lot of people say erratic things about the serial numbers of their machines. Nolan Buschnell (who designed Atari PONG) explained that the serials were encoded to avoid guessing how many machines were manufactured. Serials start with two same letters followed by three or four digits. The first machines to roll off the assembly line were numbered ZZ-001 through ZZ-999, then AA-001 through AA-999, then YY-001 through YY-999 and then back to BB-001 through BB-999 and so on. Thus, the very first machine had serial ZZ-001 (see it at the Atari Historical Society) and those with serials starting with AA have machine between #1000 and #1999. Those with YY have a machine between #2000 and #2999. [source : http://www.pong-story.com/arcade.htm (http://www.pong-story.com/arcade.htm) ]

So if my game is the number 920 on the production line, the correct value for its SN would be : ZZ-920

Although my Pong doesn't have the initial metal/silver knobs, it has the first generation of coin slot (and not the Midway one that came on next generation models), and so I can suppose it was in the first 'production' run.

So can you print two models :

- the first one with the serial :  ZZ-920
- the second one witn no serial at all (...so I'll be able to print an other value myself if further investigations lead me to an other SN...)

Please cut them off for me  ;) Thx.

I would say regular, like the sample.

...and back on this!  8)

I didn't plugged that lady since ...Xmas 2010! ( ).
So let's plug it for the very first time inside the Nuno's Lair V3

Ok, still in the same condition, yes  :-*

Still to do : to replace the potentiometers, and capkit the monitor for a bright picture because some numbers in the score display can't be clearly read.

Now the 'test' video
