Title: Donkey Kong Cabinet Colors
Post by: Superully on December 12, 2010, 09:31:08 AM
no, this is not the usual "which game originally came in which cabinet thread", this is a thread about something i've been wondering for quite a while!

have a look at those donkey kong and the dk junior cabinets

(http://www.arcadeshop.com/pics/new-dk.jpg) (http://www.arcadeshop.com/gamepic/restoreddkjr-rs.jpg)

i guess these are the color combinations seen most often - donkey kong in light blue and junior in orange. however, since the donkey kong artwork's color scheme is clearly orange and the color scheme of junior is obviously light blue, i'm wondering why NOONE (and please correct me if i'm wrong) has tried switching those colors around.

imho DK would look much nicer in orange and JUNIOR so much better in light blue!

after all, DK 3 in a red cab looks absolutely KICKASS because the artwork's color scheme is uniform

i will definitely be trying that approach on my DK restos and i give a sh** about being original or not - a game has to look good!!!

c'mon guys, your turn, bring it on

no, this is not the usual "which game originally came in which cabinet thread"

I saw pictures of a dedicated Japanese Donkey Kong Junior (still on location!) on a Japanese website and the cabinet was indeed blue (and had alternate artwork, just like the flyer).  So it looks like the artwork was designed with the blue in mind.  A collector friend of mine actually restored a DK Jr. to the light blue and it looks great!

It could be argued that the original DK artwork was designed with the red Radarscope cabinets in mind as that was what they were initially intended to convert for the U.S. market.  I imagine since Sky Skipper was released around the same time, they may have already had the blue cabinets built/in production in Japan.

The original DK game & watch was the first Dk game afaik, it was orange and I'm totally agree with you Ully, the arcade cabinet would look much nicer in that colour or that red one, that looks absolutely kickass indeed! ;)

Looks like the Japanese version was indeed blue, but i guess they designed the art to be compatible with all three colors.

If you look at the official flyer's you can see they mixed them around themselves.

I also like the baby blue jr and red dk3 a lot, now i want more nintendo's.  ;)

I used to have the same thoughts about the coloring combination, the first time I encountered the Nintendo cabinets. The colors doesnt seem to match at all. But now I am used to it, and I understand why they made this color decision ( I guess). Because if they chose for only one color, f.i. the baby blue, you''ll end up with a blue cabinet where the side art, marquee and cpo are drawn into the back of the cab, because the whole cab is dominated by only ONE color, blue. But, if you use 2 different main colors for a cab, your vision gets broken and you'll see more different things. In other words there is contrast. Hope you understand what I mean.

(same story goes for the white Marqee on the yellow PacMan cab).

I absolutely hate the DK3 in a red cab. What a waste of a nice red cab that is ! DK should be in there !!!

That machine looks like one big red blob !

I prefer contrasting colors.

Red on red= too red

Blue on blue = too blue

Oran......well you know.

The best looking DK is a red one IMHO. The colors on the marquee and bezel really compliment the red cab.
I really think they designed the DK with the 3000 unsold Radar Scope cabs in mind...

i agree with you that this looks indeed lovely, but since my DK3 is going to be RED (yes andré - RED ON RED :P), i want to have my DK (if i ever get an original one) in a different color scheme. and the light blue version from the japanese flyer looks just great!!!

Bruno explained the because of the red color.
If you don't know yet, early DK model were red because they were simply radar scope conversions.

Sorry if this point is already obvious for everyone...

@Funky: duh....my MB still has a (very light) Radar Scope burn in on the CRT :)

@Ully: Gluhwein....mmmmmmmmm ! :)

Wait a minute, what are you getting DK3 ? That would be my "least desired" Nintendo game I guess. I'd convert that red cab to DK.
Then what's next ? I must admit that the blue Jr. on the flyer doesn't look too bad.... :)

How about going with D2K blue ;) ;) ;)  ;D ;D

Wait a minute, what are you getting DK3 ? That would be my "least desired" Nintendo game I guess. I'd convert that red cab to DK.

believe it or not, i actually LIKE DK3 - it's almost a shooter! and i already have the german DK cabinet, although i will sell it if i get the chance of having an original nintendo DK cabinet (anyone wanna trade? ;)).

so my lineup would be like this: DK in orange, JUNIOR in light blue and THREE in red. not sure about having a dedicated TWO cabinet yet, I might simply throw in the add-on board in in the original DK cab. but that's all pretty far from where i stand right now, i'm waiting for the delivery of JUNIOR and THREE this week :)!

Bruno, love those pics, pure Nintendo porn :P

One question: did you leave away the "Insert 25c" arrow sticker deliberately ?
It is my intention to leave it away too because my machine was never in the US and so it simply shouldn't be there....

Ully: It should be DK in red, Popeye in light-Blue, DKjr. in orange. Where's your historic conscience ?  ;D

If you really must play DK3 (it IS a shooter), there still is MAME. ;D

Just MHO of course ;D

I used to dislike DK3 too, but when I saw the DK3 at Paul's50's I really liked it. It looked very nice, especially the CPO.

Ully: It should be DK in red, Popeye in light-Blue, DKjr. in orange. Where's your historic conscience ?  ;D

non-existent 8)! seriously, i like making slight changes when it improves (in my opinion) upon the original. for example the position of the instruction sticker on most dk cabinets is AWEFUL!!! it just looks off - as if it had been put there by someone who drank too much glühwein :P

i have to agree with you guys: DK in red looks awesome, but with my DK3 going red, DK will be orange - enough said!

nice to have this discussion going on here, that's what i intended. and interesting to see how opinions / taste differs!

Ully.....SLIGHT changes ?? Changing an entire cab color ? That's not a slight change....

But hey, they're your (future) cabs :P

i'm not such a huge fan of radarscope, although i wouldn't mind having one, but it's not at the top of my nintendo list!

Ully.....SLIGHT changes ?? Changing an entire cab color ? That's not a slight change....

i'm simply moving a kit from one cab to the other, basically i'm not changing anything at all. didn't they move the original in radarscope cabs as well?
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Cabinet Colors
Post by: Superully on September 23, 2012, 07:24:06 PM

time to dig up an old thread (of mine)! why? because i've secretly begun working on my nintendo games. currently i have six of them: donkey kong, donkey kong jr, donkey kong 3, mario bros conversion cab (which is going to become a popeye eventually), mario bros widebody and space firebird. i'll be working on them in pairs of two, starting with donkey kong and donkey kong jr.

we've had the discussion about the cabinet colors before (and i've a-l-m-o-s-t made up my mind), but i wanted to bring this topic up again, because an arcade friend of mine (thx dennis :-*) has created some pretty cool models of the nintendo models and i've asked him whether he could make two donkey kong models with a revised color scheme for me - which he did. let me present you the results!

first up, the two donkey kongs with their original color scheme

here are the two donkey kongs with their revised color scheme

i love how the colors of the marquee, the bezel and the control panel blend in with the colors of the cabs AND i also love how the sideart suddenly seem to pop out much more! what do you think?

up next, donkey kong 3! we all know that dk3 only came as a conversion kit, so operators could either put it in an orange, a blue or a red cabinet. basically the same goes for mario bros as a conversion kit, i don't know whether the widebody version of the game also came in three different colors or not. no matter what, here's a picture of dk3 and mario bros (conversion) in all three variations!

i'm pretty sure i'll be doing dk and jr with the revised color scheme, therefore dk3 HAS TO BE in the red cabinet - and how cool those three look next to each other 8)

but what do you think about mario bros - blue, orange or red? and what do you think about the donkey kongs now that you've seen the model pictures?

Donkey Kong in orange is FAIL !

I agree with andre, Orange is for Junior

Stick to the originals, so blue or red for DK (i preffer red) not only for the looks but the first DK's where made from red cabinets
DK3 looks good in red, but the game sucks so i would loose thatone
Popeye in blue, and space firebird needs to be in the original red too

oh mario brothers looks good in red bit i think the original is orange like the junior

Yep, but that's only for the wide-body. Nintendo also released a "conversion" kit for the regular sized cabs so "everything" is allowed with MB in a narrow-body cab, although I think red looks best, not just because I've got that right now...

I always found that the blue DK cabinet looked strange and bleak. Although I prefer the red original, your orange looks nice!
I keep looking at your test picture with the three cabs side by side, and I'm beginning to feel like this is how they should have been in the first place. So.. in a way I agree to what you are saying. But you are brave for saying it out loud!

thx guys, nice to know that someone understands me :). one more thing regarding the choice of colors: a JUNIOR has to "wear" LIGHT BLUE, doesn't he? if donkey kong had had a daughter, the cabinet would have been pink of course :P

btw, why should i not be brave enough to say something like that out loud? after all, i live in a free country where everyone's entitled to his or her opinion. fortunately, i'm self-confident enough that i can live with every kind of bashing - i can take the heat! 8)

As an aside ully, up until the 1940's the colour for a boy was pink and blue for a girl, in the uk anyway, it is only a recent thing but seems so definite to us.

Regarding the cabs, I think when you look at the matched colour pictures it makes the originals look like a mistake, ultimately it's your game room and now you've seen the renderings I bet your mind is set, mine would be.  ;)
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Cabinet Colors
Post by: ckong on September 23, 2012, 11:35:32 PM
I'm always for keeping the classic cabs as original as possible, as they were back in the old days. And DK only comes in two flavours, blue and red, as far as I know at least. Yes, it may not be the best choice of colours, but that is how it is (although I like the blue color very much, I guess I am a minority). I mean, there are many, many more not that good looking cabs, take for instance most cabs with woodgrain panels like Frogger, Phoenix etc., but that is no reason to give them another color.

On the other hand, if you are talking of repro cabs, then I can understand that one chooces other colors, and this orange DK will look like a repro, so I guess it then is OK, IMHO.

One final note, Ully, think of the resale value!! Must be important.  ;)  :) Which arcade collector would ever want an orange DK? Oh, he could convert it of course to a DK Jr.

Yes, im sure  ;D. Ok, I was looking through the web searching for the baby blue nintendo color code and found this thread. To be honest, I already read it about 3x, spent a lot of time watching Ullys examples. As you may know, im in the middle of my DK Jr restauration.
Since I started with body filling today, my next step will be painting the cab. And im totally on Ullys side, I think I will repaint it from orange to that baby blue ( sorry dutch guys  ;D ). So im going the japanese, dedicated way.  Ok, now looking for the RAL color code...  Thx for these pictures, Ully!!
