Post by: DarthNuno on March 20, 2007, 08:19:30 PM
Not so far from my place... A Daytona USA Twincab was waiting for me

Too bad... I've no time for the roadtrip, so I ask to ... my wife  :o  to bring the cab for me

Here's my wife's roadtrip  :P  :

This is the cab to get :

Fortunately, peoples overthere help my wife ...

...and Freddy to load the first cab

...heavy stuff isn't it

Ok, the first cab is now at my place :

Ops  :?  There is nobody to help my wife & Freddy to unload the cab

...and it starts to rain  :x

...and back to home :

What to do ?! And of course... it's start to rain... once again

Well Freddy has to go... so before to leave... he protects the cab like this :

OK... I know that the twin cabs are not working... it was the deal with the seller   .

Let's examine the cab#1 :

The cab #2 is already in the Nuno's Lair... I'll examine it later...

Back on cab #1 :

The sideart is in good condition  :)

A lot of dust... and some cigarette burns  :?

...original SEGA's wheel :

Oppss... Somebody played with his lighter on the gear box.    :

OK, let's check the board :

I can't resist to plug the game... the result is :

:?  I'm getting the board from the cab#2, plug it in the cab#1    Same result  :?

OK... first there so many dust on that cab... I can't even seat in it    Quick clean of it :

Ok, let's see closer that SEGA Model 2 board :

...features :

rom boards :

communication board :

CPU board :

VIDEO board :

Let's remove the chips...

...and clean all the 4 pcb :

...let's wait ... drying time...

Ok, now let's plug everything and

Same graphic garbages on screen  :?

Now have a look a this VIDEO (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/dayto/board1.avi) to see what happens when the cab is booting.

The seller (an arcade professional) said to me that the power supply are perfecly working on both cab... the problem should be in the boards  :?:  :?

Hint:

Try swapping the small board ;)

second hint:
-remove or move the fan to another position
(http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/5522/bull1ui6.jpg)

where the cable from the small board to the filter board are there are 2 holes where you can put the fan

Have fun

I don't know exactly why, but this an official Sega bulletin.
In the orginal position the fan throw a LOT of dust beetwen the cpu and video board, where I live (200 meters from sea) we have a LOT of humidity and over the year i've got some custom chip losing pins, since i've moved the fan the problem disappear...

It's time to check the power supply.

In order to access the power supply, I'm removing a metal plate... and I
discover others boards :

...and as you can see, it's written 'model -1' ... this is the sound board of the game. Daytona works with a 'model-1' soundboard,... same than Virtua Racing for exemple.

This one is the 'drive board' ( manages the force feedback ), thanks BP  8)

This one is the sound amp board :

mhhhh... I need to clean it  :? ...and check if all wires were not cut by mouses  :?

I can now access the power supply... Let's check :

All values are fine... It won't be a power supply problem... but what it cab be
 :x  :x  :x    :?:

OK back from hell!!!!

So here we go ;)

before i forget i'll tell you another one tips...
Check voltage on the board, not on the PS,  connector cause voltage drop so your 5.30 can be 5.0  or less on the board...
For the boot problem I've tested one of my game without the I/O pcb and got the same image so you can have problem in that board, is the cable from I/O pcb to the main PCB good?
have you tested the second main pcb?
Let me know

See ya

Big update on this  :)

Well...    ... not really regarding the boards -still dead- ... but ... I can't see that empty cab without any live in it... So, while I'm looking to repair or have others Daytona boards, or even a perfect emulation of the game via Nebula Model 2 Emulator,  I'll enjoy that cab with a fantastic *modern* game on Xbox360     Forza II Motorsport   :P

The idea is simple... just remove original Daytona racing wheel, pedals & monitor (because it's a 24khz) and put an Xbox360, with an Xbox360 racing wheel in order to use all the functions of the game (force feedback, all the buttons, ... ).

After some check, I prefere not to adapt the electronic parts of the Xbox360 racing wheel on the original Daytona wheel... to many work, and I would not be able to have the force feedback ...

I don't want to spend 220$ to buy a 15 -> 24 khz monitor frequence adapter... because I suspect the quality would not be so good (because of the conversion), and also because I would prefere to have a real scart connector to plug the Xbox360 in true RGB, so I'm using a beautill Sony Trinitron with the same size... and it's cheaper  8)

On the left the original 24khz Dayto monitor, on the right the Sony TV :

After many hours of work, here's the result :

Here's the actual status of the cab#1 :

...As you can see, I'm not using the original Daytona pedals (I'm using the white pedals from the Xbox360 Racing Wheel kit , but I think I wouln't not be too difficult to adapt. I'll do it later, but for now... I can enjoy that great game  :P

Now, check all that stuff running on this YOUTUBE VIDEO, right here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYfmBdA-ygI)

The cool thing is Sega Rally will be available very soon for XBox360 & Daytona USA also  8)  Hope they will include the classic version of these games, and a local network link option ... who knows ?

Bruno, you bring me to tears.

After enjoying Forza 2 and Colin Mcrae Dirt on the 360 for so many hours, I decided to built a simple sit down next winter.

Not that I'm aiming for a real arcade look (just the feel of a force feed back wheel will do for me) but this is simply awsome. Nice job.

Nice to see a 360 opening screen in a cab, and that the Daytona is back in business.

Bonne chance in finding Daytona pcb's, if I see some I'll drop you a mail.

...and now, because the Great OUT RUN 2SP in now available for XBOX360, you can't go wrong if you choose to put an XBOX360 into your racing cab  :o

Check this out :

Wowww... it's been a while on this project  ...   UP !  ;D

Ok, few weeks ago I got a brand new Panel for my Daytona Cab #1 (thanks JofJof27  :-*)

After visiting the Jof's Gameroom (see this post (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=325.0)), I went to "DCE", an another collector who have a Daytona Twin up & running. I'll talk about him l8ter because he also owns an incredible arcade machine that really deserves an article. He is restoring a Galaxy Force Super Deluxe

The idea was to test my two Daytona boards on his 'up & running' machines 8) :

Ok, so let's plug my boards and see what happens...

:-\ Still the same graphic garbages  :( ... let's swap the different sub-boards between my two boards ... still not working  :-[

Hey... DCE discovers a bended pin

But it wasn't the problem  :-[ Still the same shit on the screen

Well, it's now clear : both Daytoa boards are down  :'( Maybe an expert in the Sega model II boards would be able to fix them... but I'm not able to go further on this  :-[ :-[ :-[

I'm looking now my Daytona Cab #1 who is in my living room... and I'm not happy with it  :? Here's the reasons :

1) Except "Forza II MotorSport" & "Out Run 2", most of the XBox 360 looks very bad on an CRT (low resolution) TV. And this is not a matter of the connectivity (I'm using the RGB connector). Let me show you for example the latest SEGA RALLY for Xbox360

As you can see, during fast motion, there is a gap between the even & odd lines  ??? >:( Of course, it's so ugly than you can't play the game like that  >:(

The problem don't occurs with Forza II because it's a 60hz game, and also for all Xbox (the first generation) games (like Out Run 2) because it seems that the Xbox360 - when playing an game from the first Xbox - switches to a low resolution mode, and it corrects that gap lines problem.

The conclusion is clear : The Xbox360 is not made for our old CRT low resolution TV ! So bye bye the new Sega Rally, the last PGR, ... and all the new racing games to come on XBox360...

2) OK, I still can play the fabulous Out Run 2 ... it really looks *arcade perfect* on my setup ... but because I'm using an Xbox360 to play it (the XBOX360 is able to emulates most of the Xbox first generation games), there are some graphical bugs  time to time :o Sometime the music stops ... well ... and I can't accept that ...  :-\

3) The integration of the Xbox360 wheel and pedals is not a good job  :-[ Sure, it works... but it looks bad ... and if a strong man push too hard on the wheel, I'm sure he'll break it  ...

Well, for all these reasons... I'm very disappointed  :(  I've no more time for this one ... and I have A LOT of other project to do ... this cab #1 take a lot of space, and I also have the cab #2 inside my gameroom... not working  >:(

OK... I give it up ... I'm selling that Daytona Twin cab -as is- !!!

I put it on ebay...

...but...

...few hours after publishing the advert on ebay...

... I stumble over a box ...

...and my head hit the ground (ouch)...

...and suddenly...

...I have an idea .... I have a vision

... I test *something* ...

...I immediately remove the advert on ebay...

Stay Tuned  ::) :wink:

 :P

And here's the *famous* box

I had this Xbox racing wheel since one year, and I never try to do something with it

So, now the Daytona Twin is on ebay... but I'm thinking about this wheel... Maybe it'll be the perfect candidate for an 'hack' ? I Mean using the real Dayton racing wheel (and others controls like the pedals, shift, buttons...) for playing the Xbox *arcade perfect* Out Run 2 or Out Run 2006 Coast to Coast in the real Daytona Cabinet, without any artifices such extra buttons or damaging the panel like I did with the XBox360 'integration'  ::)

I have to try this !!! Let's open that logitech wheel and see if it's possible to hack it  8)

Well, there's no value written on the Logitech wheel pot...

So I'm connecting wires from the original Daytona Wheel pot to the Logitech board...

Let's try this now...

JESUS CHRIST ... F[CENSORED] JESUS CHRIST !!!

It's working !!! My god..  :D

Have a look at this video now  ;)

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/dayto/wheel-youtube.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PussxGR5oQ)

As you can see... I'm not driving too good   :D I'm not playing, I'm 'stress testing' the wheel  :D

...and I can tell you : It rock !!! (note : and at that precise moment, the ad on ebay has been removed !!! )

Stay tuned for the part II  ;D
Title: Re: ##RoadTrip + WIP## DAYTONA USA Twin cab' !

So... After testing the wheel... I have to agree... it rocks  8) The arcade feeling is perfect... the calibration of it is perfect ... but ...
what about the pedals ? Let's check that  :P

Inside the Logitech pedals

Ok, in the same manner than I did for the wheel, I'm linking the original Daytona potentiometers from the pedals to the Logitech pedals board. In other words, I'm hacking the logitech pedals board  8)

Everything is ready...

...for the 'live' test  ::)

Now see the result in this video :

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/dayto/part2youtube.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72SzuCDBY94)
(LOL I know, it's a little bit dark...  :P)

Wooww... thanks my Lord... it works GREAT  ;D

I can't believe it... in order to be sure, I plug a second XBOX and I compare the maximum speed for a car :

- When I'm using the real Daytona pedals to the max
- When I'm using a Joystick during a game
- When I'm using the second Logitech pedals (non hacked)

The result : It's the same value for all  :) :) :) It works  :-* :-* :-*

To continue of course  :)

OK, Back in time on this  ;)

So in short :

The driving wheel & the gas/brake pedals are working 100% fine  8)

One more step : the hack of the buttons.... easy stuff (the hard work is far behind me now  :P)  :-*

Here's the boards from the Logitech Racing wheel :

See there three boards... this is where the buttons are connected

In the same manner than a usual Dreamcast pad by example, I'm scratching the contacts...

...in order to solder the wires...

I do that for all the buttons... even If I won't use all of them on the Daytona cab (this last has only 6 push buttons)... but It'll allow me the select the right ones, because they are all ready to be used  8)

The hack is complete :

Now, let's prepare the 6 buttons for the Sega racing cab #1 :

Ok, time to fix this 'Driving Wheel hack' inside the cab. It's also time for a good cleaning inside the cab :

I'm using an absolute *brand new* panel (thanks again JofJof  :-*)... and what a great pleasure when you can remove yourself the adhesive protection  ;D :

Let's fix the buttons panel :

Power on...

It's a dream come true.... Everything is perfect  :-* :-* :-* Let me prepare a video of this running, so you'll see by yourself  ;)

So stay tuned my friends  ::) :-*

...a mini road trip  ::)

20th of March 2008 - 19h06 :

Let's measure it... as usual  ::) :

Daylight but rain   :ghost: ...

Back at home  21:16

Ok so why driving 2 hours/176km ? What is this ?

...

For this  :P

Remember, this project is about a TWIN cab, not a single ! I wanna play Out Run 2 in versus mode  :) !

I'm very happy with the first cab, and especially the quality of the display (Sony Trinitron TV in ... RGB mode of course), and I want for the other cab EXACTLY the same one  8) I've finally found one ... but of course I've to pick it up (no shipping)... so here's why this mini road trip  ;D (Please call this an 'ArcadeLifeStyle' story  ::) :P ;D)

Here's the details of that 'display device'  :)

The work on the 'empty' cab #2 can start  :-*

OK, it's time to prepare the panel #2  ;) There it is

Of course, I'll do the same job than previously : hacking the hardware of this Logitech Racing Wheel

..alll the details of it, if you plan to do the same  ;)

Ok, I'm connecting the original Daytona wheel pot on the Logitech board, instead the original Logitech one. Same value...so ... it works  :P :-*

For the buttons (up/down, start, change view, and A,B,X,Y), I'm looking for each track on the boards...

...and I hack them like this. Don't forget to use your hot glue gun to protect the soldering, like this

Ok, all the buttons are now 'hacked'  8)

Title: Re: ::RoadTrip + Project:: DAYTONA USA -> OutRun2 *Da Conversion*

OK, the *bad* thing regarding the panel #2 is ... the condition of some buttons   :(

Some of them are impossible to push... someone used a lighter or something, and use it on the buttons  :ghost:

Hopefully, I've founded two buttons *brand new* (and very expensive by the way  :() : the blue and the green.

The yellow one, on the previous picture is useless : it doesn't match with this button panel... it's a button for other SEGA games, like Space Harrier for example.

So I'm still looking for others buttons : the big rounded yellow, and the yellow square + red square. If you know where to buy them, please let me know  ;)  :-*

i found these at arcadeshop.de but i feel sure you must know the site, so i fear they arent the correct ones. anyway

Thanks for the link Polaris  ;) I'll check if the size/shape is the same.
I'll also check the price again at http://www.namusco.be. I've got theses two buttons (red+green square)

..from them. I'm sure they still have new ones, but I know it's expensive  :? :? :? That's the reason why I'm looking for other place to buy them

OK, back to work  8)

Before to hack the gear shifter, let's clean the 'gear box'. I remove the shifter and ... hey?!... 2€ ... I'm rich  :P

Let's remove all the panel now

Ouch... dust (cough cough)  :o

After cleaning the stuff... let's put a *BRAND* new panel

Great Work Bruno, as always!

May I ask what you paied for the Daytona (only about, not the exact price :))?? THX  :-* :-*

Expect to pay at least 500€ for a *working* Daytona USA twin. Don't go for more than 700€ ... but of course, if this game it on your 'must have' list and the condition of the game is very good, it's up to you  ;D

...but once again, there's no real quotation on arcade games... so the price is between 0€ (something we can be very lucky)  to .... hum ... a lot of money  :-\ So many factors  :?
Title: Re: ::RoadTrip + Project:: DAYTONA USA -> OutRun2 *Da Conversion*
Post by: DarthNuno on January 30, 2009, 07:14:26 PM
you'll be able to hack to shift gear this time ?

Well, I'm already able the hack the shit gear up/down electronic signals from the XBOX hardware, but the original Daytona panel has a 4 gears box (with 3 switches), with no middle position  :?. It would require to change it into a 'UP/DOWN' gear box (the one from an original OutRun2 panel for example).

So I'm doing the same thing than the cab #1. It'll use the shift gear for the usual up/down controls, inside the game menu for example.
Check this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hivVxzl7Mxw&feature=channel_page), at approx 30 seconds from the start  ;)

Done   8) No more surprise so far ... Working perfectly, like the first cab'  ;D

Of course the pedals need to be cleaned  :P

Xbox connect cable? That has to be the most overpriced thing I've ever seen. It's exactly the same as a normal crossover LAN cable. OK, yours glows in the dark, but other then that there is no difference. I can't believe how much some of those things cost.

Here's a new video to show you :

- attract mode
- test game play of the second cabinet
- versus footage

I'll do a better video regarding the versus footage.

This system is now working since few months, and I'm really happy about the result. Everything is accurate : video display (RGB), controls (using the real Daytona USA pedals/driving wheel). The only negative point is : no force feed back.

Now check this out

i recently took the plunge and bought an empty crazy taxi cab with the intention of maming it into an all purpose racing cab.

i didnt take the console hack route, instead, i bought an apac.

of course, the first game to get going on it is daytona...

with it being a naomi cab, it takes the video from the laptop at 640x480 no problems.

after some messing about, playing out run, chase hq, virtua racing, etc etc... it was all fun. takes a bit of fiddling on the menus to get things to feel remotely like the original.

i also started looking at adding some extra buttons... which would involve cutting into the cab's plastics. for now, they just sit here like this...  :-\
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3526/3721496430_6aea0e2406.jpg)

4 speed shifter is a bit too big though... looking into the smaller ones and perhaps, as advised, just get a pcb that allows the shifter to register gears 1,2,3,4, etc on a up/ down shifter.

i also bought out run 2 on the pc... the game looks great on the cab, but the controls are very difficult to calibrate... right now, you need a lot of movement on the wheel to get the smallest amount of movement on the car...  :'(

is the xbox version like that too??

Woow... Daytona :P When I started this project, Daytona wasn't emulated  :'( that's the reason why I went for one of the best racing game for me : Out Run 2 ... and because the XBOX is arcade perfect  :-* I spent so much time in that project ... It would be a lot of time & energy to roll back everything and go with a computer... but ... woowww .... Daytona into a Daytona cab would be .... Wow  ::) :-* :-* :-*

is the xbox version like that too??

Well, I would say ' a little bit', but it's perfectly playable for me (and other players who tried it).
I have one rule : if it's naturally playable, than it's good... If you start to ask you questions, than something is wrong...
As far as I remember, setting the Out Run 2 for PC version was a nightmare, and I wasn't really pleased with the result.
I strongly suggest you the XBOX version  8)

the game (out run2) plays brilliantly on the keyboard, but the moment i put it onto the wheel, like you say, i start questioning it.

everything is going through a very cheap laptop at the moment, bought especially for MAME.

i dont even have an xbox.  ;D

i'll keep trying when i can stop playing daytona and virtua racing.

How do you output the laptop 31KHz output to the egret II 15KHz (24KHz too, but it's the same problem) ?
Universal converter ?

Great pics guys. I'm jealous. I've always wanted to own a Daytona USA twin. I'd technically like to own one with all 8 players (is that the max?) linked up, but I don't have that many people to play with.

it's still a problem i'm trying to overcome. but what you see in this picture is the laptop outputting 320x240, and that's not a problem for the monitor. however, anything higher and it will give you that wonky split screen picture. i was told that if the picture is interlaced at 640x480 it shouldnt be a problem, but going through all the advanced setups on the graphics card, i still haven't managed to get a stable picture at 640x480. i have ordered a cheap vga to tv/ rgb converter, lets see if i can have any joy with that.

by the way, out run 2 is now playing brilliantly on the naomi. needed tweaking, but once the sensitivity was put onto maximum from within the game, everything came together.

Hi Kevin and welcome  ;)

Well, I didn't documented my work... because it was a kind of 'experience'  :P But I'm more than happy with this setup who works 100% and gives a lot of fun  :-*
If you have a Daytona Twin, I suggest you to emulate Daytona USA with Nebula Emulator. And yes, this emulator can manage link games  :-*
At the time, when I've started this project, Daytona wasn't emulated... that's the reason why I went on Out Run 2, but because now the Daytona USA emulation is very accurate, I would like to go to back to Daytona  :P But I've too many projects to finish first before going back on this twin  :-\
Just set up Nebula Emulator for Daytona, buy an APAC (available here (http://www.ultimarc.com/a-pac.html)) to connect the pedals, wheels and buttons...very easy. Do you still have the original Daytona monitors by the way?

thanks for the reply, yes i still have the monitors, do i still need them or shall i move over to the sony tv's because the tvs are real cheap nowadays nobody wnats them.
will the apac board allow me to connect all the steering wheel pedals etc or do i do it the way you did?

Hi,

I am new on this forum. I know vib_ribbon as he sold me an Egret 3 Marquee a while back. Glad to see you finally got the Crazy Taxi you were after :D I am currently working on a conversion of an old Sega Rally cab. I have installed a Logitech G25 Steering Wheel that is compatible with both the PC and PS3. I was going to use the G25's pedals, but then saw the Pedal mod done by Darth Nuno 8) So I have been busy cleaning up and restoring the original pedals. The problem I have is that the Sega pedals use 5k pots, but the Logitech G25 apparently uses 10k pots. Is it possible to get 10k pots to replace the Sega ones i.e. of similar spec / quality only 10k or is it possible to get the 5k pots working correctly with the Logitech G25. I would be grateful for any advice.

This is the cab before the steering wheel and monitor surround went on.

Hello Andypc pc and welcome here.

I only have experienced that racing wheel

...and I'm very lucky with this one, because the value of the POT was just fine for the conversion. It's probably possible to hack the hardware of your G25, but it would require an interface that convert the 5K from the original SEGA pot into the 10K on your G25 pot'...

Because you plan to use a computer, just keep the original SEGA racing wheel/pedal and use the A-PAC (http://www.ultimarc.com/a-pac.html). You'll be able to play Out Run2 like I did here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9GqQiI-MQc&feature=PlayList&p=3CE5C5AC2E5D4183&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=2) but also Daytona or Sega Rally via Nebula emulator  ;)

The G25 wheel is already in the cab and working  :D It works really well and I get force feedback with PC & PS3 games that support it i.e. Outrun 2, GTI Club, Sega Rallt Revo. The Nebula Model 2 emulator also supports force feedback with the G25. The only real thing left to sort out is the pedals.

I managed to find some 10k potentiometers to modify my original Sega pedals ;D They work perfectly and I get full throttle and braking with out any problems. The full details of my cab conversion can be seen at "jammaplus.co.uk" or "arcadeotaku.com"

Back on this  8)

Playing Out Run 2 vs in a twin racing cab' is still great, but I had always mixed feelings about a cabinet supposed to play a certain game -in that case DAYTONA USA- but for X reasons, it's not case
More than 4 years ago when I decided to convert that completely dead twin cab into Out Run 2 powered by XBox, there was no other option than tying to repair with expensive and fragile Daytona boards. I of course tried that way but I didn't want to spend €€€ and fight against all these curses around these model 2 boards from hell
No accuracy emulation at the time... but things changed since the release of the fabulous Model 2 emulator 1.0 (http://nebula.emulatronia.com/).
Ok... it's nice to play Daytona via Model 2 emulator but what about the its integration into the original Twin Racing cab? About about the steering wheel, the link mode,...
To be honest I spent XX hours working on my Daytona to Out Run 2 project, and I don't want to roll back all that work done... I have no time for all this anyway.
So what? I want this Daytona cab plays Daytona USA!
The major problem is the current steering wheel interface used : an XBOX version (hacked in order to match the real Daytona controls), and I don't want to remove it because I still want to play Out Run 2. I got the information (thanks to BigPanik) that an XBOX peripheral like this steering wheel can be used ... also on a computer. I just have to use a simple passive adapter to plug the XBOX cable into... a simple USB cable, and download a specific drivers.

OK, let's try if I can really use the hardware supposed to be for XBOX only, on a PC computer. First let's setup model2 emulator on my laptop :

Cool, the game play very well on that laptop  :)

Here's the specs :

Sony VAIO
Intel Core Duo Processor T2400 1,83 Ghz
NVidia Geforce Go 7400

Now let's use the XBOX to PC USB adapter in order to use the steering wheel with this emulator :

Good point, Wndows XP detects a bew peripheral, but of course it cannot recognise it  ::) After downloading a special 'modified' drivers... yessss!!!! The wheel is perfectly detected  :-* :-* :-*

Let's calibrate it, setup the emulator controls .... and test the result..... check all of that in that video  8)

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/dayto/daytona_mod2_0.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ-x4Vu6_XQ)

...to continue...

Next step is to use the original steering wheel. We have developed a board (named L2M2) allowing you to retrieve original Force feedback with a PC.

Cool!

Just a simple connector switch in the end and you can play both "hardware"  :spaceace:

Perhaps integrate a switch so you dont need to swap connectors anymore, and intergrate bot the xbox and pc in the cabinet ?

looks like enough space under the seat  :P

Hmmm, thats a very good start indeed! I thought about maming (though it's not mame ;)) my Daytona too. I was lucky enough to get a working boardset recently though (thank good for that one!). The controls itself are not that difficult to adapt to other "platforms" as pc or xbox .. even the new consoles are possible to adapt. BUT the force feedback is really hard to bring to life, also the 4-way-shifter of the Daytona isn't applicable for every game and Daytona without manual shifting is bad. You see it in the video ... brunos lap times are no good  :P (sorry, no offence here, it's just a technical comment on your turn technique ;))

That's sounds good! But I'll have to check if I still have all the FF parts behind the panel however... I hope so  8)

Yeps, the only manual operations to do for switching between the XBOX and the PC will be the USB cable for controls, and the audio cable. A manual switch box will handle this I presume.
You're right, the first objective is of course to play Daytona USA, but as you can see on the video, It will play other model 2 games such Sega Touring Car, Sega Rally, Indianapolis 500,... and why not ... MODEL 3 games like Scud Race , Le Mans 24 or even Daytona 2, but I'll have to get more powerful computers to do that  :P

Thanks to the L2M2, the force feedback should be back. Regarding the 4 way shifter, not sure to be able to use it. Anyway, I've never selected 'manual shit' in any racing game, so it would not be a major problem for me.
LOL, I really suck in that video I know, but I did not really play to be honest... it was just the first run with a playable setup  ;) Wait for the final video  8)

Hey, I still had three pictures on the server...nothing new, but just for the fun...

Does the model 3 emulator can work in 'link mode' too?
What would be the correct PC specification to emulate Scud Race in full frame speed?

unfortunately their's no link mode for the moment and for the specs i would say either the amd 1055t six core cpu or a core i5 cpu with a geforce gts 450 (i have that gpu and daytona usa 2 and scud race works on my pc without any problem)

I must confess I'm completely 'out' regarding the PC hardware/specification nowadays . I never went further than Windows XP, and always used MOBO with AGP board (which is not used anymore I guess?). I'm fine with my knowledge level because it's enough to setup advance mame config for old games, but I'm a little bit 'out' for new emulator like model 2 / 3   ::) I don't play on computer anymore, and I'm a iMac user since few years so...  :P

I am a big fan of Outrun 2, and I have been considering to import one from Asia since many years ago.
However, I am also thinking about going the same route as you, and convert a cheaper cabinet with the Xbox version.
I have recently been offered a double Sega Le Mans 24. The cabinet looks correct (except the colours), and it even has the up down gear shift. Do you think it would be more or less like converting your Daytona? I would want to follow your method. :spaceace:

How accurate is the XBOX version, compared to the original?  I remember people were upset with the Dreamcast version when it came out.

If I'm not mistaken, Daytona USA is the best selling arcade game of all time.  It shouldn't be that difficult to find locally.

I don't want Daytona USA, I want Outrun 2. :D
DarthNuno transformed a Daytona USA into Outrun 2. I am thinking about converting a Le Mans 24 into Outrun 2.

Yes, Daytona has been released for next gen (360&PS3). It looks accurate, but I'm not a Daytona USA expert tbh.
I wouldn't use that version inside a dedicated cabinet because I don't think you can select the original arcade screen ration (4/3). It displays in 'widescreen or 16/9' ration only.
I'm not sure if that version can handle 'local network' games, and the hack/integration is probably more difficult than using a computer...

...and you won't regret it! The XBOX version of OR2, and even OR2 'coat to coast' is simply amazing to play inside a twin cabinet! Except the dedicated arcade related things (like 'insert coin', 'waiting for second player...'), It's all good! it's also  possible to have force feed back working (but require an specific interface I don't use here).

Can you say more about that interface? I feel like Outrun 2 SP has less force feedback than the regular Outrun 2, but there is still some, so I would also want that. :)
So, do you think that Le Mans 24 could be converted like you did with your cabinet?

The interface is called 'L2M2', here's a tutorial by Aganyte (in french) right here (http://www.gamoover.net/Forums/index.php?topic=20417.0).
Well, Le Mans 24 is a model 3, my Datona is a model 2... I think they are differences regarding the racing wheel/force feed back stuff, but the 'hack' principle -if you go that way-  should be the same.

The motor of the "Le Mans" cab was not compatible whis the L2M2.

Thanks.  :) Now I'm wondering if I should take the chance and go for it.

I build that device recently ... and gave it away to someone who will test it soon. I gave both non-working Daytona boardsets to Ken Westerfield instead. Won't go for emulation on that one anymore (or any other cab I think :D). Will post results if any ;)

I'm seriously considering to buy the "real deal" instead, but I am very interested to hear about conversion projects.  :)
Nice device you have there!  :spaceace:

You can sell the yellow pushbutton to me...I restore a SEGA Hang-On

If the yellow button is not for sale anymore maybe someone can tell me where to buy it.
I restore a SEGA Hang-On and would need that button. I even found the button but the company want 28USD for it....
