Title: Sega Aero City - yes, it's a candy
Post by: ckong on April 11, 2010, 03:08:38 PM
OK Guys, I know that most of you don’t have warm feelings for Japanese arcade cabs, but some do.

That’s why I wanted to post a few photo’s of my latest purchase, last week. Yes, that is correct, I bought another candy cab. But this one is special. First of all it is a Sega Aero City, which you don’t see that often.

But what makes it truly special is that it is in new condition. And I don’t mean that it looks like new, which it does, but it is new. This cab has been imported from Japan way back in 1988, together with others, but it never went in operation, commercially or otherwise.  Another special thing about it is that  it was specially fitted by Sega for the German market (See the 220V  sticker at the back, with the Sega logo on it). A friend of mine bought a whole bunch of Aero City cabs, and this one, together with two other ones, have always been in storage, since 1988! Some parts, like the marquee and control panel, were still covered in protective adhesive vinyl.

And that is great, because technically the cab of course has no issues at all, the 22 year old monitor is brand new, as are the controls, etc. The only ‘cosmetic damage’ is a little spot on the sideart (see photo). That’s it, really amazing, for me anyway. I was happy that I could buy this game from my friend.

Oh, there is no road trip report, that is ‘not done’ in the candy cab scene.  ;) And no, it is not a plastic box, the cab is made from metal.  :D  Here are some photo’s:

Fantastic condition Erik, but, as Ully, I'm not fan of candy cabs  ;D.

I can understand. Fortunately I like both types of cabs, the classic ones and the candy cabs. My love for candy cabs grew when I got passionated about frantic bullethell SHMUP's and there only is one way to do them justice, on a sitdown japanese cab. And Ully is right, the candy cabs are not exactly pieces of art (although I like them), but the games you play on them are.  :)

And later this year, in my gameroom, I will have both types of cabs, separated from each other of course. I feel that japanese cabs deserve a place in it, especially if you consider that it was Japan where the games came from which kickstarted people to play arcade games. And nowadays Japan is the only country with a vivid arcade gaming society (which is not age bound) and where new arcade games are still being produced.

I don´t like the look of the cabs either, but i think it´s cool you will make a section for those aswell in your gameroom :)
If i should ever own a SHUMP it should be Ketsui (http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=12723) but in a oldsch00l style cab...

And I thought we had cured you. I thought we had rescued you from the evil, and saved you from the dark side.

But I guess this princess of darkness was too fresh and too beautiful for you and you fell for her....

Candy......indeed.

Way too much monitor for way too little cab. And those controls.....those BUTTONS ........

I'm not sure if I can allow a brilliant piece of art like a Gravitar to be in the same room as this I'm afraid......

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I pre-ordered Ketsui for my Asian XBOX 360, it will look great in this cab, of course with the help of this great converter:  http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28069

@André, this 26" monitor is awesome for vertical SHMUP's. But I know you need to see it before you believe it, and one day you will, my friend.

Just kidding my friend, I'm sure the higher-res games of the later generations need this sized monitor.

As we say in Holland: Onbekend maakt onbemind.

I'm a child of the late 70's early 80's. The golden years of arcade games were the golden years for video games for me too. I never lost interest in video games, but I did loose interest in arcade games around 1985/6 because of all the Streetfighters etc.
I'm sure I missed some very good games because of this.

And it must be great to find a NIB machine like that.

Still, there's no emotion for me. Yet ;)

I'm not a big fan for playing classics on it (pixels are just... too big  ::)), but I played vertical DREAMCAST games on New Astro in pure 'TATE' mode...games like Under Defeat, Zero Gunner or Ikaruga... and it rocks!  :-* :-* :-*

PS: I'm looking for one... 'New Astro' only please  ::) ;)

I also sometimes hook up my Dreamcast, Gamecube or PS2 (and older consoles) to my New Astro City (I have two of them Bruno  ;) )and that rocks.
