Title: [Roadtrip] - Gyruss and Ronnie chasing Ghosts
Post by: Ronald Reagan on March 12, 2010, 02:26:22 PM
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/miss-ronald-gyruss2.jpg)

Most pictures in this topic were made by a camera phone, hence the low quality of the pictures. Nonetheless, we are so happy with our new cabinets, we still want to share our PacMan-roadtrip with you.

Saturday the 20th of February, I got a textmessage from Gyruss which said:
"There are 20 PacMan cabs and some Galaga's for sale, SICK!"
It was DarthNuno who made a topic about it. The picture said it all:

After some dreaming, drooling, checking the bankaccounts, private messaging with Ckong, fingerscrossing, etc. we heard the good news. Ckong was on it's way to Germany to negotiate with Paul, the seller, to make a nice bulkdeal in which we could join. Ofcourse we immediately said yes and gave Ckong our maximum price. I chose a Pacman and Gyruss went for the Ms. Pacman.

The next day Ckong informed us that the deal went through! I got a textmessage from Gyruss which said:
"PacMan gek!"

Ckong posted some nice pictures of the cabinets on the forum:
And luckily for us, Ckong was a good negotiator and made a nice price with the seller.
We agreed to pick up both the cabs the next day. The Roadtrip was on!

Statistics:
Date: 5 March 2010
Authors: Ronald Reagan & Gyruss
Target: Pac-man and Ms. Pacman
Trip: Holland
Total length: 220 kilometers
Duration: 18:00hrs - 22:00hrs

We rented a van across the track, at our 'friends' of Kuperus. The place we usually go if we go pick up a cabinet somewhere. Some awkward people work over there, but anyway, we drove off. In the mean time it started to rain 'cats and dogs'. Gyruss took the rural route to hit the highway.

We drove through a well known fishing area, where Gyruss' little brother used to go fish at night.

Once we hit the highway, we got caught up in a traffic jam. Slow traffic all the way.

So, it was time for some funky soul music along with the additional info of an arcadebook.

Because of the slow traffic, we talked a lot about our soon to own PacMan cab's and why the heck Level42 didn't bought one? Haha. Furthermore, we thought the marketingstory about the Atari SwordQuest was one of the best we have ever seen. More info on that here: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/angry-video-screwattack/61988

We passed the IKEA. "Doesn't that yellow K look like the mouth of a PacMan  :pac:" Gyruss said. I started to worry there, a little bit.

In the meanwhile, the weather got worse. Rain, Snow, more cats and dogs. Just see for yourself
(http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/8664/70215696.jpg)

We just drove on, and slowly the traffic jam disappeared.

Finally we could leave the highway. We could smell our cabinets already. (could have easily been something completely else ofcourse, but you know)

We drove several kilometres before we entered a small village.
After that, we were getting closer to the Ckong's Lair.
Unfortunately our TomTom send us the wrong way. So, Gyruss guided our PacVan straight into a small forrest road! We phoned Ckong and he told us we were close.
After that, the meeting was on. We were warmly welcomed by Ckong.
We talked, looked, gazed, drank coffee & tea, looked again, gazed again, smiled big time, and were happy to pay Ckong for his work and effort!

After we loaded in the cabinets we drove straight back to Hillywood.

We unloaded the cabs while it was still snowing a bit.

Here is Gyruss his cabinet

And this is Ronald's

Then, it was time to grab something to eat. We went for a DonerKebab close to the Gyruss Lair.
Pretty expensive and long awaiting DonerKebab that was, but hey, who gives a flying..WE GOT A PACMAN!

So, here are some more pics of both the cabinets:

Worst pics ever, are they drawings?  ;) Great story though. Nice to see that ms. pac-man is alive also. Strange because Paul claimed that all cabs had different technical issues. This gives good hope though for Michael and Ully.

;D

Well in this case I have to be extra careful because I already hurt RR pretty badly the very first time we met. It's not because I've always hated the real Ronald Reagan, but there was an accident when we moved in the Centipede. His thumb/hand got squashed between the doorpost and the cab and I STILL hear the terrible sound when that happened. Man I hope RR is better now, but as you understand, I have to be extra careful now ;D

Is that why you were wearing that bandage around your hand? I could see that it was already pretty old.  :D

I love the 'roots' pictures  :-*

It's really AWESOME too see so many 'Pac Man / Ms Pac Man' road trips ... especially for the Ms Pac Man... it's a game 'almost' impossible to find here. It's real cool to see many of you finally get that cab'  :-*

Thanks for the story... and of course, it deserves the homepage  :-*

I justed cleaned the connections on RR his pac man pcb, and what do you know, the pac man cabinet is also working! And I'm a bit jealous because his screen is almost perfect, no burn-in and very bright and sharp colors!

Don't thank me, I have to thank you guys. If you all wouldn't have participated (small ods, I know  :D), the deal would have been not so nice. And it is always fun to be helpful to other arcade collectors and friends. Like the Japan cab deal which I organized last Summer, that was also very fun to do.

Even better, the pac man joystick works perfect! Maybe they replaced the grommet.
Is it easy to convert the ms pac man pcb to a pac man? Will this involve soldering or is it just a Rom swap?

Yesterday a little package from the US arrived:

(http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/3348/p1020600.jpg) (http://img532.imageshack.us/i/p1020600.jpg/)

It’s Ronald Reagens Pac Man Marque.

(http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2542/p1020604.jpg) (http://img17.imageshack.us/i/p1020604.jpg/)

So the outside of his cabinet is now also in his original state again, looks beautiful:

(http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/7073/86481569.jpg) (http://img198.imageshack.us/i/86481569.jpg/)

I also did some shopping yesterday for mine ms pac man. A new lock:

(http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4946/p1020625.jpg) (http://img227.imageshack.us/i/p1020625.jpg/)

And also a new light for my coindoor:

(http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2795/p1020628u.jpg) (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/p1020628u.jpg/)

(http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7330/p1020629c.jpg) (http://img18.imageshack.us/i/p1020629c.jpg/)

I already installed the original eroms a while back, so my ms pac man is back in his original state.

Today another package from the US arrived. A new ms pac man cpo:

(http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/2664/imag2878.jpg) (http://img443.imageshack.us/i/imag2878.jpg/)

Looks great, much more accurate then the one 2bits is selling

(http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/1431/imag2884.jpg) (http://img149.imageshack.us/i/imag2884.jpg/)

Even the midway logo is there

(http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/9264/imag2882.jpg) (http://img25.imageshack.us/i/imag2882.jpg/)

Do you guys know what the best method is to make the holes for the screws? I got a hobby knife at home, will this do or do I need a scalpel?

Title: Re: [Roadtrip] - Gyruss and Ronnie chasing Ghosts
Post by: Ronald Reagan on June 30, 2010, 11:38:50 AM
nice to see the Midway logo is there. Is the coloring much different?

Title: Re: [Roadtrip] - Gyruss and Ronnie chasing Ghosts

No, there is no difference. The colors of the old one are a bit faded.

looks as if it's the one from darin@phoenixarcade

Yes, I got it from him.
Still the question remains, what's the best way to make the holes for the screws?
Could I also use a small drill?
Title: Re: [Roadtrip] - Gyruss and Ronnie chasing Ghosts

I'm not saying this is the best way, but I do CPO's this way:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=62784.msg671270#msg671270

Shame we didn't share the shipping costs on this....but my mistake !
Anyway, I'm going to order some more stuff from Phoenix though for my Ms.Pac, not just the marquee CPO.......I have made my decision......  ;D

Great, thanks for the info.  ;D

So I guess you will use stickers? It's really tempting, I have been thinking about it also.
I'm too lazy and inexperienced for the stencils and the pic's on klov do look nice.

Or are you talking about the Mario bros to Donkey Kong conversion?

+1 I think I know myself too well to have the patience to do the stenciling like that nor the time....

My main point was the shininess of the decals, I expected them to be pretty shiny, but those pics convinced me. There is only a tiny issue that the copyright says Namco but the CP says Midway....I think I can live with it....

The wrong copyright kinda sucks, expecially since he got the CPO right. But hey, you can't have everything.

Why are you going to order a new maque?

Uh, I thought I'd read that on the KLOV forum....but I'm actually not that sure....I asked a question there about it now....

Gyruss: You're right I'm not going to order a marquee (why would I :) ) but I meant the CPO......corrected in that posting :)

Yesterday my brother visited me and we decided to replace the ms pac man cpo with a brand new one.  :D

We detached the control panel from the cabinet, as you can see the cpo has some minor damage.

After cleaning the buttons and removing the glue from the control panel it was time to put on the new CPO.

It looks beautiful.  :D :D

Next up: replace the monitor (with severe burn-in) with a brand new one.
