sorry for going a little bit off-topic, but would it be a good idea to stock up on color tvs now? if so, which criteria are important to look out for (besides sizes of 19 or 20 inch)? will any model be good enough, e.g. what about this one: http://cgi.ebay.de/Samsung-TV-CB-5073T-51cm-SCART-Composite_W0QQitemZ150408239780QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDE_TV_Martin?hash=item2305079aa4 (http://cgi.ebay.de/Samsung-TV-CB-5073T-51cm-SCART-Composite_W0QQitemZ150408239780QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDE_TV_Martin?hash=item2305079aa4)

As long as the SCART accepts RGB input, which almost all do.

Honestly, I'd much rather stock up on true arcade monitors.

Title: Re: BURGERTIME BALLY/MIDWAY CAB - Scratch Built Replica PRELIMINARY

OK, here's the values :

1. 176 CM
2. 83.5 CM
3. 14 CM
4. 30.4 CM
5. 12.8CM
6. 4 CM
7. 6.2 CM
8. 8 CM -> But not accurate because the bezel is not totally vertical! *BEWARE HERE* + the part of the hat is NOT a perfect circle here!
9. 8.9 CM
10. 13 MM
11. 11 MM -> Beware here... complicate area ! It would requires more details/values to be accurate!
12. 7 MM
13. 22 MM
14. 79.8 CM
15. Same value than 14 ...I mean the line 'under the Burger'...why asking this one?
16. 15MM

Well, some values are very hard to take... especially the smallest one (10, 11 or 16 for example) ... but I hope it can help 8)

very accurate as always  :spaceace: :spaceace:

For the smallest values no problem ... I checked my Galaga cab (midway cab and very similar ), compared the measurements, and are equal .... so I can start doing the project on paper.

Thanks again !!!  :-* :-*

this is coming together nicely. any leads on the bezel yet?

regarding the cab dimensions / shape: wouldn't it be easiest (for you ;)) if bruno put his cab on the side and traced the shape of it on a huge piece of paper?

sorry bruno for suggesting that ...  ;D

what about the bezel?

Probably I'll use this method (used in Galaga and Pacman projects with great results  :-*):

Galaga: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=402.60

Pac-Man: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=536.90

In this post the Burgertime bezel file :

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=98344.0

Unfortunately I've not found bezel reproductions  :'( and bezels for sale are in bad conditions (faded and discolored).

YES!!! you're good to go. great job on the preparations, with all your experience building the cab should be a piece of cake.

don't want to rush things, but you should build something even more complicated the next time, like an R-360 or an afterburner cockpit  ;)

if i were you, i wouldn't go with those measures, because they vary from cab to cab. remember, back in the days those cabinets were put together quickly to get them out into the arcades as soon as possible, so it didn't matter whether the sideart was put on perfectly. from my (minimal) stencilling experience, the stencils should be applied so that they look perfect and NOT to match the original. both my pac and my joust stencils as well as my centipede sideart are a couple of centimeters off from which their original position - and it looks much better!

i'd position the stencils so that they are in equidistance to the hat! but that's just my two cents  8)

Yes yes absolutely, is very important to use sandpaper between coats !!!

Would it not be better to use a darker primer paint where you are going to overpaint in a dark colour?

yes i suppose there are light and dark bits on this cab, and 1 primer is easier than 2.
its looking lovely in the mustard colour

are you a member of BYOAC?  i have a thread there about paint codes and would like to add any information you have on the colour you chose to the thread, and wiki (eventually). if you can take a pic of the paint codes if you have them on the tin and post it if you are ok with me using the information. :-*

Hey screen, when you've done those cabs (and when you've found more space for your game room) :

-Moon Patrol
-Q*Bert
-Ghosts'n Goblins
-Ghouls'n Ghosts
-Kung-Fu Master
-Karate Champ
-Marble Madness
-Dig Dug
-Out Run

I'll come to your house on holidays with wife and children for one week of intense geek retro gaming.

Hey guys, after some testing I decided that it is not possible to paint the stencils with spray cans inside the house, the stencils are big as the risk of messing up everything, do you remember this

(http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/2852/43761858263df45f8a61b.jpg) (http://img2.imageshack.us/i/43761858263df45f8a61b.jpg/)

  :? :ghost:

So .... i'm blocked  :-\ ... Do you have any suggestions? It's possible to make stencils with foam rollers? This is my alternative ...

I've found this link:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=125930&highlight=stencils+foam+rollers

... but there were no suggestions on how to  ???

for me stencils are a totally new thing and I wouldn't damage everything  :P

Thanks ...

it could be done, only put also plastic on the floor, and create a "door"

oh, and take your shoes of before you step out of the "paintbooth"  ;D

have you tested the spray cans yet? because not all of them are as bad as my blue color, some of them produce almost no overspray - it depends on the type of spray can paint you are using.

if i were you, i'd build some kind of spraying booth with foil and do the paint job inside of it - if the paint is ok, it should work fine. but if it is the same type as my blue, it will be tricky  ;)

You can use this tool

It has a really low pressure and really good precision !

( In some graffiti art shops you can also found low pressure  cans.

(sorry for my english ;) )

I'm no expert but wouldn't it be _very_ hard to get an even coat with a paint-brush like that ?
Apart from it taking probably ages to do the relative large areas...

That's the BIG problem for me too, I have no place to stencil stuff.... :(

Do you have a hallway in your flat? If so, you can make it into a spray booth. If you decide to use foam rollers make sure you peel off the stencil BEFORE it dries all the way or else the paint will peel off with the stencil like an onion.

i didn't cover the floor because the paint i used came out almost dry and it wasn't too difficult to clean up later. however, i'm still finding residues of that blue paint in room faaaaar away and on objects way out of sight, that's why i haven't had the energy to do the red  ;)

You also have seal of the back with plastic.  ;D the floor, the walls, the sealing and the back. Create a small room covered with plastic. And the cabinet have to stand on something that lift it up from the floor. The paint on the floor gonna be a mess. When you are finish painting for one day it is nice if the sealed of plastic room has a window (fresh air) behind one of the walls.

Thanks guys ...  :-*

I've another problem ...

I should use synthetic-based paints, very difficult to find in cans, what do you think about a spray painter?

http://www.valex.it/webvalex/prodotti.nsf/WebScheda/I1554561001?OpenDocument&I|001|10|10|40.0|CASA|SISTEMI%20DI%20VERNICIATURA|1554561|VERNICIATORE%20A%20BASSA%20PRESSIONE%20SUPER%20PAINTER%20BX2000|img|VERNICIATURA%20E%20PITTURA

It's ok the HVLP tenchnology?

So ....

Spray painter or foam rollers? This is the question  ???

I should use synthetic-based paints, very difficult to find in cans.

why synthetic-based paints? can you find the colors you need for the spray job in "normal" paint cans or are they produced especially for you?

Spray painter or foam rollers? This is the question  ???

hmmm, difficult choice you have to make. i haven't had the best experience with those spray painters on my Joust 2. IF i had to do it all over again (which i eventually will with another cab), i'd get a professinal system with a compressor, although i have NO IDEA which one to get. as always, the market is gigantic and you have to look thoroughly.

perhaps someone else around here is better versed in this subject.

of course you could always ask at klov, but the suggestions those guys make are american-based and you will have a hard time finding those items over here, therefore a european suggestion would be better. i'd be interested in this as well!

btw, don't rush it, scr33n. you've spent so much time (and money) into this already, don't ruin your job with a poor choice of "weapons"  ;)

Do you used the spray painter for the stencils on your Joust 2?

Great result IMO

It's your spray painter HVLP? High volume low pressure?

 ??? ??? ??? ::)
Title: Re: BURGERTIME BALLY/MIDWAY CAB - Scratch Built Replica WIP

this is what i used  http://www.wagner-group.de/portal/color_w_660_de_wag,781,360.html (http://www.wagner-group.de/portal/color_w_660_de_wag,781,360.html) no HPLV

one side of my joust 2 turned out fabulous, on the other side parts of the yellow peeled off when i removed the stencils, although i did both sides at the same time with the same type of paint and the same ratio.

because my spray painter doesn't have that much power, i had to use a lot of thinner to get the colors right. not as easy to work with as the promos make you believe, but i'm sure it's easier with water-based paint.

difficult decision for you, i haven't looked into HPLV stuff at all.

btw, i will finally be getting my replacement stencil for the yellow some time next week, so that i can finish the paint job on my joust 2!

Not much a choice scr33n. Go with the micro-rollers and a thin the paint. Do many fine coats, after all stencils are applied, knock down the paint ridges with a fine sand paper then clear coat to make a even finish.

Ok guys finally I can start the thrilling part of this project .... STENCILS  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :pac:

Remove the protective film and stick very well the stencil:

(http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/2415/stencils1.jpg) (http://img718.imageshack.us/i/stencils1.jpg/)

(http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/9707/stencils2.jpg) (http://img641.imageshack.us/i/stencils2.jpg/)

and now the first coat of white (foam roller method):

(http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/9307/stencils3.jpg) (http://img224.imageshack.us/i/stencils3.jpg/)

(http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/7834/stencils4.jpg) (http://img580.imageshack.us/i/stencils4.jpg/)

second coat:

(http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/3339/stencils5.jpg) (http://img404.imageshack.us/i/stencils5.jpg/)

(http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/7936/stencils6.jpg) (http://img685.imageshack.us/i/stencils6.jpg/)

fingers crossed  :?:

(http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/4773/stencils7.jpg) (http://img687.imageshack.us/i/stencils7.jpg/)

(http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/2189/stencils8.jpg) (http://img685.imageshack.us/i/stencils8.jpg/)

(http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/8974/stencils9.jpg) (http://img686.imageshack.us/i/stencils9.jpg/)

(http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/7595/stencils10.jpg) (http://img686.imageshack.us/i/stencils10.jpg/)

(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/8903/stencils11.jpg) (http://img202.imageshack.us/i/stencils11.jpg/)

YESSS!!!  White is DONE !!!!  :-* :-*

Remember, always use the same type of paint (synthetic one, in my case) for better adherence between the colors.

Next: Red color

YES!!! well done, scr33n. i'm happy that it worked out. i didn't roll on the paint because it isn't recommended with stencils, but you proved otherwise. let's hope the second colors sticks to the first. how thick is your white color? are you planning on evening out the edges with steel wool or something?

Thanks guys for your support !!!  :-*

how thick is your white color?

I can say the white color is pretty thick (1Kg of paint - 10-15% thin) - I rolled down the white paint several times to smooth the coat.

Are you planning on evening out the edges with steel wool or something?

I don't think ... because the edges are very smooth  :-* :-* :-* fortunately

nice work! - what´s with the PAC MAN´s???

so you're saying you can't see / feel that there is a second layer of paint? it evens out with the background?

No, no... I can see/feel about 0.5 mm of paint thickness ... but I can live with this and especially I don't want ruin the paint underneath (mustard)

And you Ully? What's your method?

Another thing ...

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=129642

it recommended? risk of yellowing?  ??? ???
Title: Re: BURGERTIME BALLY/MIDWAY CAB - Scratch Built Replica WIP
Post by: Superully on April 17, 2010, 01:39:58 PM
that's what i'm looking into right now as well. i will DEFINITELY clearcoat both my pac-man and the joust 2, but finding the right type of clearcoat won't be an easy choice. as you've said: danger of yellowing. i thought about getting clearcoat in spraycans, but this has to be top notch quality, because i'm afraid the usual cheap stuff from the home depots might yellow over the years. have you looked into this?

regarding the thickness of the top paint layer. i too have those rims of around 0.5 millimeters. phet on the klov forum always uses steel wool to take down the edges and then clearcoats the entire thing afterwards. this way, the whole paint job gets an even finish. however, i'm afraid that using steel wool might ruin the paint job. i might have to try this with some spare stencils!

I really don't see the need for a clear-coat. Often it will turn out too shiny. Also, the cabs will be in your home, no sun to hurt the paint.

i think the clearcoat is more a thing of protection than to make the paint job look more even! i will definitely put clearcoat on my pac-man because of the paint quality, not sure about joust 2 yet!

that is incredible - and all that in your living room! congratulation on another outstanding scratch-built, stencils with a roller obviously work. although i have to admit, the quality of that stencil material seemed to be outstanding as well.

a couple of questions:

- which games are you running on your burgertime now?
- how many more games can you squeeze into your gameroom?
- and - of course - the obvious question: what's next? i'm missing a driving game, q*bert would be a blast or what about berzerk / frenzy now that the repro control panels are almost done?

Totally awesome... once again!   :-*

Regarding the T-molding, on most cabinet pictures I've seen (including my Burger Time cab'), it looks more 'orange/yellow' than red.
The flyer shows a red T-molding, so I presume most of the original 'red' T-molding are now faded...

I'm waiting the video now  :-*

Yes on old Burgertime cabs tmolding is faded away ... (as sidearts, marquee and bezel  )

right Tmolding is orange ... as Pacman.

why not running "peter pepper's icecream factory" as well?

puh, i wouldn't build a centipede, because those are probably the easiest cabs to find of all the dedicated cabs in europe. building a williams cab might be not the worst of all ideas, because you could run more williams games on it. what's your take on berzerk / frenzy? incredible games imho!

OK heres the deal i just bought a burertime arcade game and will be doing the same exact thing you did...but i  have the OG cabinet to get the demension off of.  My question to you is 2 things one how did you get the slit into the panels to fit the orange trim and i cant seem to find the CPO anywhere anymore.  i found everything else but not that...any leads??  I only paid $200.00 for it total and a pawn store and traded in a bass guitar i paid $20.00 for at a yard sale and got $100.00 for them and it was a cheap squire not even a good one...guess they wanted the game gone...they originally was asking $699.99 for it.  so i only paid $100.00 for a perfect playin game with all the parts i need and now to buid a new cabinet to transfer everything and your amazing pot will be my bible on how to do everything!!  i jut wanted to thank you!  its amazing.  Rob

You'll need a router with a slot cutting bit, something like this:

thanks everyone...i think i will start my own burgertime thread this week!  two more quick questions.  I just got a bezel off of ebay as mine was shattered at some point in its life.  now at the moment i have a piece of plastic covering where the glass should be....can someone measure the glass of a original cabinet so i can get one cut?  and how do i mount this bezel??  its not a sticker like i thought it would be.  The centers not even cut out so ill have to use my exacto knife and cut carefully the center out but need to know how to actually mount it to the glass....for the life of me i cant figure it out.  Help guys! ???
