...... why I enjoy this magazine very much:
http://www.retrogamer.net/back_issues.php
A special on Gradius. Get it, it's worth every penny. :) :) :)
-
Never played Gradius, but there's a "The making of FRENZY !!!" Not Berzerk but Frenzy !
Wow...I need a subscription. The magazine is awesome. The only thing I'm not too keen on is the (UK) focus on Spectrum, Amstrad, BBC and other rubbish hardware they produced there ;) ;) ;)

i agree! too much uk videogame and computer stuff for me. but the arcade articles are an interesting read!

I always ignore those UK computer articles... ;D

Ully, what was that German retro game magazine we saw at the Daddelparty ? That looked very interesting too....
-
@ André, Ully and Michael: Alan McNeil is not only talking about the making of Frenzy, but also about Berzerk, according someone from Jamma+ (I didn't get the magazine yet as I am overseas for them).

Shame on you :P
I'm very happy with almost 100% of the content (I'm not a big fan of the 'homebrew' section for example :P)
Long time ago, in a galaxy not far away.... I had a Sinclair ZX81, and also a ZX Spectrum...and my best 8bit computer : Amstrad (well, I had a Schneider model... german powâââ ;D) and of course, they are big fan too... ::) UK Powâââ ;D
Of course I would like to see more arcade stuff, but there is a good balance of everything... and that's the reason why it's a successful mag' IMO :-*
This is the first and only mag I've subscribed in my life... and no regret at all!
-
I really like the arcade parts but it wasn't enough to make it worth it for me so, after some debating, I let my subscription expire this year.
Too much later post-Spectrum/C64 period home computer games and console stuff that didn't really affect me back in the day. I dropped out around the time the NES came along and only played in arcades. And computer-wise, I was too busy running up my parents phone bill with early modems and calls to Bulletin Board Systems :)
-
how come no one mentioned that our bruno is in this issue?? ???
-
er.... there's a lot of talk about computers that were popular in UK cos it's a UK mag?! :-*
i don't actually buy the mag but i flick through it in WHSmiths since i'm tight. actually, sometimes the articles don't go far enough for me, but some of the back stories on development are interesting.
-
how come no one mentioned that our bruno is in this issue?? ???
Equites mentioned it, right here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1208.msg12014#msg12014) ;)
I'm waiting to get the mag in my hands for discovering the article... on real paper :P

But why did it take you so long? ;)

do you want older issues, too?

No thanks, I read most of them at the Daddelparty already. But I am very keen on issue 14.

Never played Gradius, ....
I only played it in Mame, but I scored an original game board yesterday on jamma+. :) So the game will soon shine in my New Astro City.

just wanted to let our two dutch guys know that the order for the magazine has been placed!

Pure luck. I missed the game in two previous occasions only for being a few minutes too late. This time I was hoovering jamma+ at the right moment. The first guy who responded in the sales topic just mentioned 'option' (?). I learned my lesson in the past and immediately made a solid offer. It worked.

I've seen it too, some people were even wondering what 'option' meant . Of course, that was a good thing for you ckong! Congrats with the buy!
-
those who didn't know what "option" meant 'need some practice' on the game.

I have the mag' of course, but cannot scan it and publish here (copyright issue of course, the mag is too recent ;))
-
Cool bruno !
I listen him say "we need to do a bigger interview", and "we will do something very soon with him"
did they already contact you about the interview and when will this take place ?
-
I might be in this magazine soon :)

Ok Bruno ... you're right, sorry for the request
-
And here's the video preview of the Retro Gamer Issue 81 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imfDrdew8l8&feature=sub)
The making of Ms Pac Man :-*
The making of 'Day Of The Tentacle'
...
Can't wait to read that :)
-
Heh, I remember when Day of the Tenticle was released I was at a computer fair and they were handing out demo CD's of the game (smart, I think it was a new idea then) that smelled like hell (deliberately).
I think I did play the beginning of the game, it was fun but I never seriously went through it.
The Ms.Pac article has too much MAME screenshots and NO cabinet pictures ? WTF ?
Cool that they have some original "designs" though, although it's a bit hard to see what they actually are.
-
i just got 1 retrogamer mag for my bday form my stef family(?) And loving it. maybe go for a subscription but depends on how long i read this one.
-
Day of the Tenticle is GREAT! I love that game, the animation, character design and voice acting are top notch, like most lucasart adventures.
This magazine also seems to be great, too bad it isn't available over here. I guess i will have to subscribe.

Get a subscription. I have one since isuue 2, best magazine I ever ha a subscription on, even better than the Donald Duck. :D
-
OK, I watched the video again on full screen and there are some interesting screenshots in there of Crazy Otto.
I'm not keeping up with MAME, but I'm pretty sure no-one has the original Crazy Otto ROMs ?
I may have to order this copy because I've got a Ms.Pac.
You can order separate issues as well it's not that expensive.
-
Day of the Tentacle :-* :-*
The best graphic adventure after Monkey Island 1 & 2 IMO ... :spaceace:
-
Damn, look at this thread on BYOAC. I completely missed it ! They had Crazy Otto running on a show on the US east-coast !
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=101193.0
WOW !
I hope someone dumped the ROMS ! ;) ;)
Pretty cool picture of the GCC people in front of a few of their products: Quantum,Ms.Pac,Food Fight. Not sure if they had anything to do with Jr.Pac though ?
-
I'm pretty sure they dumped the roms, I read it somewhere but don't know where. :-[

This magazine seems really cool, but shipping costs to Belgium are equal to the cost of the magazine, damned postal services, around 14€ per issue is really too much, and they do not even decrease the shipping costs when I buy one issue or 5 (5 times the shipping costs, wow).
-

Very interesting, but it looks like it didn't become available in the end....

Again, get a subscription. I pay something like GBP 70 for 13 issues, delivered to Holland.

Are you sure about the shipping cost? Well, I'm a subscriber since few years and I don't remember paying so much expensive shipping cost? So I think it a lot cheaper each time I renewal it every year... that would explains
Anyway I do not regret! This mag is awesome! Not enough arcade stuff, but so many other things :-*
-
It's 5 pound for the magazine and 3,50 pound for shipping, so totally 8,5 UKP which is a little over 10 Euro's, not 14.
I think that's pretty reasonable for such a professional looking magazine which has a rather small target audience.
You can also get an electronic version IIRC AND there's a compilation DVD available of past issues.
-
I have tried to order 4 issues for a total of 20£:
Shipping Method
* Standard £ 18.75
A little trip to Google, typing in french: "38.75£ en €" which gives me 38.75 £ RU = 46.3712744 € so around 12€/piece, sorry for the wrong estimate
I think it should be more interesting to subscribe for one year.

I don't know where you live in Belgium, but it's sold at IMS (http://www.imstijdschriften.be/) if you have one close to you.

:-* :-* :-*
-
I've got mine today, and YES :-*.
edit : Bruno, you don't have a Missile Command cab yet, right ? Or perhaps, you dislike the game ??? ?
-
Well, I really like MC, but obviously not enough to be in my 'must have' list... but wait, of course it's on my 'nice to have list' ;D
So much cabs' to collect :? ;)
-
Hey fellows,
after I saw this thread here and recognized, that I slowly run out of reading material, I thought I'll give the Retro Gamer a try and ordered two issues. They arrived today and I can't wait to read them. After taking a first look into the mags I must say: I like it! Thanks for the tip!
Btw. Shipping wasn't that much money. I paid about 20 Euros for two issues shipping included. I think it's totally worth that money.
-
you will enjoy them, great mags. :)
-
In the Missile Command issue, MC world champion said there are maximum 10 MC upright cabs left in the UK... ???
-
Well, could be of course. Do you think it's more ?
I have that issue too, great stuff about MC. What struck me that while they (correctly of course) say that the A8 conversion is the best, they fail to mention that it is also one of the few (only ?) that supports a trackball like it is supposed to be (so _not_ emulating joystick commands).
This makes it stand out even further above all the others ;)
I also read that he had had Dave Theurer sign the marquee. I was thinking about wether I would actually like that or not....what do you guys think, would you have your favorite game's marquee signed by (one of) the people behind the game ? While it's of course very cool on one side, it's also a bit "in the face" to choose that location...
-
I think they are not THAT rare... there was one on Jamma+ 2 months ago for 550£ which is a really nice price if there are really only 10 available in the whole country.
Regarding the marquee signing, I had the same thought as level42 and I think I'd like it better on the sideart...but then it's much more difficult to send by mail ;)
Anyway, it has to be on a part of the cab, much more interesting than on a piece of paper imho.
In this case I was thinking that maybe if you're trying to break a world record, it must be great to have a little word of your "mentor" just above your head so you can easily read it before each try to encourage you.
Tony's version of MC is slightly customised too (tainted glass, glass marquee, special writing on the coin stickers) so I guess, he doesn't really care for sticking as close as possible to the original cab as we do. He just want a nice looking and effective machine.
-

i'm no fan of that signing stuff at all, especially when it's in an extremely visible area. there are guys who worship their signed control panels - that would be a no go for me!
-
I'm a huge fan of signing stuff :P It gives your games or whatever a little bit 'more special' than the other :P
Two years ago I missed the opportunity to have my Star Wars cockpit signed by ...Dave Prowse himself
Fortunately I got a lof of stuff signed by Don Bluth and the DL Team :-*
-
l got this Voucher from chrischris the other night (THANKS!!!!)

-
That's great, please tell me they did NOT use MAME (=RASTER) pictures for a change...yeah yeah, I know it's hard and stuff, but if they're doing a special....
-
Wow, see what's coming in the next issue... COMPUTER SPACE in cover, wooow :-*
...also a celebration of the 30th Galaga anniversary, stuff about Jack Tramiel, Rastan Saga... see the video preview right here (http://www.youtube.com/user/RetroGamerDaz#p/a/u/0/RSKIIdQS1x4).
Can't wait to receive that issue! :P
-
Hey muerto, have you used the offer code? if not i'd like it please???
-
Is it still valid? How much is the shipping from IM's shop to the EU? They don't state it unless you make an account. Guess I'll pick up the Computer Space issue in my favourite magazine store as soon as I'm in one of my favourite shopping cities. They all have it in stock I see :)
-
hope they do a digital version soon (like edge did) for people with tablets :)

Hi, I've ordered there several times and the Mags were shipped to Germany. Payed 17.50 Pounds (~ 20 Eur) for two Mags from the shop. Shipping is 7.50 Pounds.
-
Any Bubble Bobble fans? I'm sure they are plenty here ;)
25th anniversary celebration this month

-
Gotta say I like the mag more and more. The last two editions had a great article about Atari's history. Although it focussed a bit too much on the computers and consoles and not on the "real" Atari, it was a great read. (Thanks CKONG for you extra copy !)
Bubble Bobble....meeehhh, who likes Bubble Bobble ? I DO !!!!
One of the best games ever made and in my top ten !
Think I'll get the iPad version of the magazine. I like to have it right away and always with me...
-
I love this magazine and renewed my subscription. The only things i dislike is the long wait for it to arrive. My local book store has it more then 1 week earlier. And two the fact that the send me a voucher whit a amazing discount. witch happens to be 2 pound :?
-
I was very pleased to get this issue ;D
-
page 8 is the best page!
-
I really love this mag! Would love to get a subscription. But what is this all about with this vouchers and stuff? On the website, it seems to me like I can only get this 70 Pounds subscription for 13 issues, because I am in Germany. They have other offers for less magazines and they are cheaper, but it seems they are not available for Germans.
And also: do you get it somewhere at your local bookstore not in the UK? I tried to get it here, but no success..
Anyway, I will order the Bubble Bobble issue! It was the first videogame I ever played. My brother started it on the C64 for me and went away (I was a small kid back then) and I played it the whole day! Amazing game!!
-
I have an iPad, and i just bought it on that, very handy!!
Havent got the chance to read the intire mag yet, but i LOVED the BB section!!!!
-
Retro Gamer Issue 97
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pliSYNfcofs&feature=uploademail
with a 'Frogger' special ....
this number is for you Ully ... just in time for your resto
-
do you get it somewhere at your local bookstore not in the UK?
In Düsseldorf the magazine is available at the book store/ newspaper stand at the central station.
If you'd like to get an issue which has just been released, I could buy it for you (as I'm working in Düsseldorf (and not that far away from the central station), it's no problem to drive by).
-
I have an iPad, and i just bought it on that, very handy!!
Yes it's OK on the iPad but I'm not really happy with the App they use for it. This can be greatly improved IMHO.
For me it's pure bliss though. I always have the magazines with me, I can stores hundreds of them, it's cheaper and quicker of course.
Yes there is something lost in not having a physical magazine, but for me the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages.

That's always my point too....

What ;D : there is a part about Lynx too :-*.
-
Ah ! That makes it worth getting a lot more. I am actually pretty interested in the Frogger article because I know about nothing about the history of that game.
-
Ah ! That makes it worth getting a lot more. I am actually pretty interested in the Frogger article because I know about nothing about the history of that game.
Right ! And after reading the piece of junk they called "the history of Frogger" I STILL know ZERO about the history of the game.
They BARELY touch the original arcade version. There is not even a NAME of the guy(s) behind this game !!
NOTHING is told about the process of designing the original, no interviews with the programmer/developper. For Christs sake, there isnt even a picture of the arcade machine !!!!!!
After about 2 colums reading we get a souped up list of raunchy follow up games which are either totally uninteresting or plain trash. Frogger is Frogger and he shouldnt be walking straight up or in fact do anything else than crossing that road and pont !!!
DEEPLY disappointed by this article, it seems like it was written bij a 20 year old who thinks a Playstation2 is a classic system.....
Definitly not on par like articles about Asteroids. :( >:( >:( >:(
-
Glad to see the Lynx article IS a great article....
-
New issue feautures Metal Slug and "The history of Space Harrier".
Judging from the preview, they managed again to do the SH article without a picture of the arcade cab....
no, not even the full sit down version that should of course be there....
Instead they waste about 3/4 of two pages with 3 times the same figure from the game.....
-
Mhhh, don't be so negative to fast. Most of their arcade coverage are usually well done, sure not perfect and always 'not enough' for 'die hard arcade experts' like us ::)
Let's wait 'till reading the article before comments...Yoda says ;)
-
How can there ever be an article about a certain game without a picture of the very first original version ?
Its like, hey I am writing an magazine article about the history of Volkswagen and not putting in a picture of the first Beetle.....
-
...In a general way, I prefer to wait and see the final 'thing' before judging it, that's all simple ;)
-
As mentioned by André right here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3706.0), it's the Atari 40th anniversary today!

I still love the mag but the last 2 are still in the foil because i dident have the time to read them.
Is there a legal way to get the digital version of the mag when you are subscribed for the paper one? Then i could read it on the go.
-
i'm curious: what are the 20 nintendo games you've never played?
-
The latest issue is just awesome!
8 pages for the 30th Robotron anniversary!
4 pages for the Major Havor 'the making of'!
8 pages regarding the AppleII computer.
The making of "Battle Squadron", one of the best Amiga game ever :-*
History of Pitfall, to celebrate its 30th anniversary
Dennis Koble interview (arcade programmer at Atari : Sprint 2 for example) ;)

just sorry to see the price issue , ~13€ shipped, last one i got.
__
about Robotron.. do they comment about the "Terminators" because it's the exact word on the game !!?!. it's more than coincidence that James Cameron got inspiration for his movie.. it's the same purpose !!!!! teleported warrior that protects wifes/kids from nearly unstoppable Terminators !!!
-
...Maybe this is an alternative .....

Why not get a subscription, then you pay about € 80 for 13 issues, about € 6 per issue, including postage. Not bad after all. And the good thing is that they seem to have covered all ancient micro´s and they are moving on to the NES/SNES era, and they are also covering more and more arcade stuff.

I'm out.

Looks pretty nice.
They score with the 2 pages about Pong. That score is there for a reason..... ;)

Haha....Well I tried to zoom in on the video but it was so blurry I couldn't actually see what it was but the cab shape reminded me of MK or SF, at least a late 80s game....
I'd say turtles is even less classic then MK :)
